Patel heroics can't deny Durham

Samit Patel scored a brilliant 114 and took three wickets, but Durham squeaked home by one wicket against Nottinghamshire

“The boy stood on the burning deck…” There is something about the youthful, diminutive Samit Patel that brought that quotation to mind today, but in fact the Nottinghamshire batsman, in no way a mere boy, did far more than merely stand on the deck; he was at the guns, firing one broadside after another at the enemy, while the corpses of his team-mates littered the ground around him. This may well turn out to be the one-day innings of the season. Add to that the three vital wickets he took when Durham’s middle order collapsed chasing what appeared to be a certain victory. And the match itself – in the last hour a walk in the park for Durham turned into a thrilling one-wicket victory as they almost succeeded in self-destructing. The final honours belonged to Gareth Breese, who kept his head and hit a four through extra cover and a straight six to win the match with six balls to spare.Nottinghamshire won the toss and decided to bat under a generally sunny sky. The decision had an element of risk in it, as the previous day had been one of light rain, which could not have left the pitch unaffected. The Durham seamers found a little swing, a little movement, nothing extravagant, but it proved too much for the hapless Nottinghamshire batsmen. With one exception.Nottinghamshire’s trials began with the sixth ball when Callum Thorp trapped the opener Will Jefferson lbw. Wickets continued to fall at irregular intervals, the most spectacular being the run-out of Adam Voges for 13. He made the error of trying to steal a single to Neil McKenzie at mid-on, only for the fielder to swoop on the ball and throw down the stumps brilliantly. The match appeared to be no contest at 102 for 8. But Patel was still there, and now he took over, helping by two virtual sleeping partners. Darren Pattinson scored seven out of 48 for the ninth wicket; Charlie Shreck two while they added 38 for the last. However, they did a vital job as Patel played the innings of his life. Once or twice he enjoyed slices of luck, swinging and missing, with twinges of desperation, but he knuckled down again and continued with his Mission Impossible. Runs came all around the wicket, but his powerful driving was most impressive. He brought up his century with a six off Breese, just to the off side of straight, and then put the next ball into the stand beyond long-on. It was his first one-day century. He was the last-man out, deceived by a quicker yorker from Ben Harmison as he moved across his stumps and tried to sweep. His 114 came off 113 balls, contained 17 fours and two sixes, and was more than 60 per cent of the innings total of 188.There were two wickets each for Thorp, the Harmison brothers and Breese, and the Durham bowlers generally did a good job. Steve Harmison bowled with considerable accuracy, but without real venom.

If Nottinghamshire thought they had put themselves – or rather, that Patel had put them – back in the match, Durham soon set out to disillusion them with dominant early batting. Phil Mustard, despite poor form this season, did his best to play in the attacking fashion that served him well in the past, but was caught at slip for 14. Will Smith settled in with Michael Di Venuto, who built a very firm foundation before starting to open out, and at 127 for one it looked all plain sailing for the home side. Then the wheels began to come off – and it was their own fault. Perhaps complacency set in, but the balance of the match swung startlingly. It was that man Patel who started it, but he had unwitting help from Smith (41), who unaccountably patted back a simple return catch. Next over, Di Venuto (70) drove Pattinson to short extra cover, another soft dismissal, and the slide was under way.Dale Benkenstein was distinctly unimpressed to be given out caught at the wicket off Patel for 3, but his fellow South African, McKenzie, played a woeful shot to be caught at midwicket for the same score. Panic seemed to set in, as Nottinghamshire came to life again with new vibrancy and Durham fought to overcome a situation they had never anticipated.Patel finished his spell with 3 for 27, recording the best bowling as well as the highest score in a match his team ultimately lost. Apart from the result, it was a story from schoolboy fiction. In real life, the ultimate individual match-winner, Breese – the man who had snatched a similar victory against the same opponents at the same venue last year – was still at the crease. He did it again. Steve Harmison failed to overcome the pressure, holing out easily to mid-off, and last-man Mark Davies, who had left the field during the first innings feeling unwell, had to come in and do his part. Once or twice Breese seemed to forget his responsibilities in retaining the strike, but Davies kept his wicket intact and made it all possible.Twelve were needed off the last two overs. Breese began with a single, very dubious in the situation, but Davies scrambled one to restore him the strike. There was to be no more fooling around. The four and the six that followed and, despite the heroics of Patel, it was the holders of the Friends Provident Trophy who were celebrating their success in reaching the semi-finals again.

Nash gives NSW upper hand against Tasmania

HOBART, Nov 23 AAP – A fine all round performance by fast bowler Don Nash gave New South Wales the upper hand in the Pura Cup match against Tasmania in Hobart today.

AAP23-Nov-2002HOBART, Nov 23 AAP – A fine all round performance by fast bowler Don Nash gave New South Wales the upper hand in the Pura Cup match against Tasmania in Hobart today.Nash hit a lusty 50 to help boost the Blues first innings to 393 and then took three wickets to leave the Tigers a precarious 5-183 at stumps on the second day.Tasmania suffered from the problem that’s plagued it all season – its batsmen got starts, but couldn’t convert them into a big innings. This was particularly true of Michael Dighton, who briefly illuminated Bellerive Oval with a lovely 54, which included 10 imperious boundaries.Captain Jamie Cox batted for almost two hours for a dogged 25 and Dan Marsh stayed 71 minutes for 22.Scott Mason, the former opener who was recalled to add some barnacle to the middle order, did his job admirably for 124 minutes. He batted with great concentration and occasional pugnacity for 39 before being given lbw to Stuart Clark for 39 just before stumps.Allrounders Shane Watson (19) and Scott Kremerskothen (7) will resume the battle tomorrow, their first target being the 60 more needed to avoid the follow-on.Nash bowled with aggression and accuracy and two of his wickets came when he extracted extra lift that caught an edge.Plenty of other deliveries beat the edge as he gave the batsmen almost nothing they could hit with safety and finished with 3-39 from 19 overs, nine of them maidens. The Blues were hampered by Stuart MacGill being hit on the hand while batting in the morning. The leg spinner didn’t take the field until after tea, when he bowled four relatively expensive overs and left again.NSW resumed in the morning at 6-280 and Tasmania did a poor job of wrapping up the innings, bowling waywardly and dropping two difficult catches.Nash, Nathan Bracken (38 no) and Stuart Clark (24) made them pay with some big but never outrageous hitting.A 56-run eighth wicket stand between Nash and Bracken in 43 minutes was particularly damaging and Clark added insult to injury when he helped Bracken put on a further 41 for the last wicket. It was finally ended when Kremerskothen had Clark caught off the first ball after lunch. The wickets were shared, Damien Wright finishing with three and debutant Adam Griffith, Watson and Kremerskothen taking two each.

Aston Villa: Fans react to fixture changes

Aston Villa have seen their September meetings against Chelsea and Everton changed for TV broadcast.

The club shared the news on their official Twitter page, and a number of Villa supporters were quick to react to the update on social media.

Villa’s trip to take on Thomas Tuchel’s side at Stamford Bridge will still take place on Saturday, September 11, however, the kick-off time is now 5:30pm.

Their clash at Villa Park against Rafa Benitez’s side will also take place at the same time seven days later. Both of the changed fixtures will now be shown on Sky Sports.

Villa welcomed back their squad for pre-season training on Monday and the club’s first pre-season friendly is just over two weeks away.

They currently have four friendlies scheduled, with the final of the four coming against Sevilla a week before the new season begins.

Fulham and Birmingham eye Windass

News has emerged about Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass, regarding interest from Championship clubs.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sheffield Star, Championship sides Fulham and Birmingham are both interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass. Both sides are said to believe that they can strike a bargain deal for Windass due to Wednesday’s off-field issues in regards to their finances.

The report claims that Wednesday manager Darren Moore is a big fan of Windass and would like him to stay at the club next season. However, it does not state Wednesday’s official position on whether or not the club are open to selling Windass this summer, nor does it say what Wednesday believe Windass is worth.

Sky Sports pundit and former England international Sue Smith praised the forward earlier this year, labelling Windass as a constant “threat”. She told Sky Sports, as transcribed by Yorkshire Live:

“He’s just a constant runner and a constant threat.”

Chansiri must avoid mistake

Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri must avoid a grave mistake this summer with Windass. Amongst all the upheaval on and off the pitch, Wednesday should not be looking to sell their top goalscorer from the season just gone.

A number of first-team players will be leaving the club at the end of the month, including Joost van Aken, Elias Kachunga, Tom Lees, Joey Pelupessy, Adam Reach, Jordan Rhodes and Keiren Westwood.

This shows how depleted Moore’s squad already is ahead of the club’s return for pre-season next month. Chansiri sanctioning an exit for Windass would be the icing on a cake that Moore doesn’t want to eat.

Windass scored nine and assisted five goals in the Championship last season, which made him the club’s top scorer and joint-most creative outlet in the second tier. The former Rangers man proved his quality at that level and showed enough to suggest that he could thrive in League One and play a key role in any potential promotion push for the club next term.

The £10k-per-week ace, therefore, needs to stay at the club next season if Wednesday and Chansiri harbour any ambitions of returning to the Championship at the first attempt.

Selling him now could be a major error by Chansiri and he needs to make sure that Windass is still in Moore’s squad next month and that he’s ready to play his part in the 2021/22 League One campaign.

Moore has already lost the aforementioned players due to their contract situations, but Windass still has another year on his deal and Wednesday should be looking to make the most out of him over the next 12 months.

Sri Lanka preparing for spin warfare

The crowds have been disappointing so far in the ICC Champions Trophy but on Friday afternoon even the streets outside Premadasa International Stadium will be overflowing

Charlie Austin26-Sep-2002The crowds have been disappointing so far in the ICC Champions Trophy but on Friday afternoon even the streets outside Premadasa International Stadium will be overflowing. Match tickets are already exchanging hands for five times their face value. No one wants to miss the Sri Lanka-Australia semi-final. In a country that adores one-day cricket, this is the biggest game since the Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup final.Sri Lanka felt an equal weight of expectation on their shoulders in thetournament curtain raiser against Pakistan, when defeat would have forced upon them the humiliation of an early exit. Instead of wilting under the pressure they drew inspiration from the occasion and skipper Sanath Jayasuriya hopes that his players will react similarly in tomorrow’s game."This is the biggest game we have had for a long time," says Jayasuriya, dripping with sweat after the team’s final practice session. "The whole of Sri Lanka is following this match, hoping that we will win. But we must not put ourselves under too much pressure – we have to treat it like any other game."Jayasuriya is under no illusions as to the enormity of the challenge posed by Australia, even if Sri Lanka has the advantage of home conditions. Ricky Ponting’s side have emerged from a winter’s break in scintillating form, brushing aside their opponents with contemptuous ease."We are playing the best team in the world tomorrow – it is going to be very tough," admits Jayasuriya. "The boys know that it’s not going to be easy but they are looking forward to the game. We are not going to roll over just because this is Australia – we are going to give them a hard time."He wants the players to concentrate on the basics: "We have to carry ondoing the things that we have been doing well and stick to the basics. But to win against such a good side as Australia we are going to have to perform in all three departments."But the key will be the front-end of both innings: "We have to keep ourwickets intact during the first 15 overs. They have three of the best fast bowlers in the world and we have to be more cautious. But if there is anything loose then we must play our natural game."Jayasuriya comes into the game still suffering considerable pain from adislocated shoulder – an injury that may now require surgery – with aformidable run of form having scored 36, 102*, 71, 46, 97, 49 and 36 in his last seven games. He is the single most important reason for the turnaround in Sri Lankan fortunes and there may be concerns that he is due a failure. He just wants to prepare in the same manner, focusing on the present rather than the past: "I am not putting myself under unnecessary pressure to perform again. The important thing is to prepare for the game as I have been before."Coach Dav Whatmore admits the captain’s contribution has been immense but believes that the other batsmen will stand up to be counted when heeventually fails. "His performances have been wonderful recently and the knock-on effect is self-evident," says Whatmore. "But there have been others that have also contributed and we are prepared for the eventuality of Sanath not getting runs. We feel confident enough with the batsmen that we have to do a repair job if he fails."But Whatmore is concerned about the Australian batting, particularly the openers: "If you look at the other end both openers are capable of scoring big hundreds. They have been the catalyst for recent victories."Thus, restraining Australia’s powerful batting line-up has become the focus of Sri Lanka’s strategic planning. The selectors and management are yet to agree on the best course of action but it is clear that they have identified spin as their trump card on the slow, turning Premadasa pitch – the only question is how many do they play.Sri Lanka last played Australia at the same venue during the AIWA Cupstraight after the 1999 World Cup. During the final of that tournament Sri Lanka played just two fast bowlers, opening the bowling with the part-time off-breaks of Russel Arnold and bowling 35 overs of spin in all. Australia were bowled out for 202 and the hosts cruised to a comfortable eight wicket win.And once again the management are considering dropping a fast bowler toprovide the luxury of three specialist spinners. With Australia having four left-handers in their top six and a perceived weakness against off-spin, Kumar Dharmasena is certain to play alongside Muttiah Muralitharan. The dilemma is then whether to play leg-spinner Upul Chandana as well. If they do then either Dilhara Fernando or Pulasthi Gunaratne must step down. The fact that Fernando, despite being Sri Lanka’s most penetrative pace bowler, struggles with the new ball means that he is the most likely to be discarded. The case is more compelling when one considers extra depth provided byhaving both Dharmasena and Chandana in the lower middle order. With Chaminda Vaas they would bat down to number nine.Sri Lanka:Sanath Jayasuriya (capt), Marvan Atapattu, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda de Silva, Russel Arnold, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Chandana, Kumar Dharmasena, Chaminda Vaas, Hasantha Fernando, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Pulasthi Gunaratne.

Offer rejected for Gers target Abdulmalik

According to The Daily Mail, Millwall have rejected an approach for Glasgow Rangers target Abdul Abdulmalik.

The Lowdown: Rangers planning for the future

While the Gers have already added to their first-team squad this transfer window with the free signing of Fashion Sakala (rangers.co.uk), they have a history in recent years of signing youngsters.

James Graham and Tony Weston are just two of the teenagers they have added to their ranks over the last 12 to 18 months, and it seems they are interested in bringing in another.

The Latest: Abdulmalik offer rejected

As per this report, Millwall have rejected an approach from Swansea for 18-year-old Abdulmalik.

Along with Rangers, 13-time English league winners Arsenal have also been credited with an interest.

The Verdict: Plenty of potential

Abdulmalik may, as of yet, be relatively unknown, but he has shown promise so far at youth level. In particular, he managed four goals in four matches during the 2019/20 F.A Youth Cup (Transfermarkt), while he has also scored one goal in three caps for England’s U17 side.

The interest from the likes of Arsenal also suggest he is a top talent, but it is refreshing to see the Gers pursue quality prospects.

With Nathan Patterson already breaking into the first team and the likes of Leon King and Ciaran Dickson picking up playing time, it seems Steven Gerrard is ready to build for the future as well as the present.

If Rangers do wish to make a move for Abdulmalik, they may need to do so sooner rather than later as Swansea look like they are pushing to get a deal done.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid at this SPFL development.

Celtic: Fans slam Neil Lennon

Plenty of Celtic fans have slammed Neil Lennon on social media after he hit out at a section of Hoops supporters for ‘giving the club a bad name’.

Celtic’s season started off strongly under the 49-year-old, but their 2020/21 campaign quickly deteriorated before Christmas and ultimately ended with no trophies.

The former Hoops manager, who resigned back in February, was talking about protests from some Celtic fans following the club’s 2-0 defeat to Ross County last November. County ended the Bhoys’ run of 35 straight domestic cup wins, with ugly scenes from a section of supporters at Parkhead after the match.

Speaking to The Times, with quotes relayed by the Daily Record, Lennon said:

“Speaking to the players the next day (after the League Cup loss) they were really disturbed and upset by that.

“Literally upset by it. That was the first cup defeat in 35/36 games. It was the end of an unbelievable cycle of success and for them to be treated that way was bewildering. They should have been lauded for it rather than abused.

“They were getting pelted with missiles. It was very sad. There was a new breed of supporters that I had nothing in common with and who belie the values of the club.

“They are the ones that are giving the club a bad name.

“It was definitely a situation like no other. You’re going for the tenth title in a row and that was an obsession for the fans, an unhealthy obsession I felt. And we were in the midst of a pandemic where nothing was normal.

“You are in the game to enjoy it. It was all about the football but this season football took second place to a lot of things.”I wouldn’t say I was hurt, I was more bewildered by it and the lack of time and the lack of faith that people showed in me.”It’s basically fans I’m referring to more than anything else.”I can walk away with 21 medals as a player and a manager, the first guy to do the treble as both a player and a manager. If that doesn’t mean a lot to other people, it means a lot to me.”

Celtic fans react

The Daily Record shared Lennon’s comments on their Twitter page on Saturday morning, and their post unsurprisingly received plenty of interaction.

These Hoops fans were quick to vent their frustrations back at the club’s former manager, with a selection of responses available to view below.

“A manager surely brings responsibility. Trying to deflect, deary me.”Credit: @kevinwalsh1964″I loved Neil Lennon as a player. The fight, desire, passion. As a manager he sat in the dugout with his feet up watching us get beat. Interviews like this, living on the success of previous managers while taking no ownership are insulting and disrespectful.”Credit: @AshleighMeikle”This is so utterly delusional and trying to support his mates on the board that it’s laughable. HE was the main problem- his outdated lack of tactics other than switching wingers was his downfall, not the fans’ fault. This is Pravda trying to be divisive via NL.”Credit: @howlinwhippet”Seriously???”Credit: @K5VVM”bewildered”Credit: @kieranwrigg”He’s at it”Credit: @ccww1967

Fresh twist emerges in Spurs’ manager saga

A new name has emerged in Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial search this week…

What’s the word?

According to Sunday Times and Daily Record journalist Duncan Castles, Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui is being considered for the vacant role.

Speaking on a recent episode of ‘The Transfer Window’ podcast, he said: “I hear that there is an additional candidate that they’re working on in the shape of Julen Lopetegui, who could be a solution for them if they can’t get one of their earlier choices.

“Lopetegui is liked by Tottenham and is likely to be recommended to them by Paratici, he certainly has a good track record of work at Sevilla, winning the Europa League in 2020, and finishing third and fourth, getting them into the Champions League two years running.”

Paulo Fonseca is widely believed to be the front-runner for the gig after Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed that the two parties were in ‘advanced talks’ over a potential three-year contract, but this news is certainly an intriguing twist.

Better than Fonseca?

Since this claim, reports in Spain have fueled the fire even further, with Estadio Deportivo likening the situation to that of Juande Ramos back in 2007, when he replaced Martin Jol in controversial circumstances. They claim that he is not their first option but he is among those being considered, and many around north London believe he could be a very good candidate.

For example, one supporter claimed the Spaniard was who they should be going for over the “Portuguese version of Roberto Martinez”, whilst another suggested that Lopetegui would be a great manager instead of the “defensively average” Fonseca.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-team-and-injury-updates-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, team and injury updates and more!”]

Those are merely a couple of responses in reaction to reports linking the club with the Sevilla boss, and even though it’s a small sample size, it highlights the overriding consensus that the former Roma man is probably not the right appointment.

During his time in Italy, the 48-year-old has failed to build on his previous success elsewhere, failing to steer Roma any higher than a fifth-place finish in the Serie A, whilst his side were embarrassed by Manchester United across two legs in the Europa League semi-finals in recent weeks. They leaked eight goals in total in that tie, which would reinforce the views of some in N17 right now.

Meanwhile, Lopetegui won that very competition at the end of the 2019/20 season, defeating Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan – another name heavily mooted with the Spurs job in recent weeks.

If the 54-year-old former Spain and Real Madrid manager is genuinely being considered, that should give plenty of fans a little more hope as Tottenham’s managerial saga rumbles on.

It’s not too late for Daniel Levy to gauge the reaction here and opt for Lopetegui instead of Fonseca.

AND in other news, Paratici could appoint Spurs’ own Unai Emery in “exceptional” 48 y/o who blew Pep away…

Everton fans react to Lucas Digne exit link

PSG are monitoring Everton left-back Lucas Digne, according to French outlet Le10 Sport.

The Parisians, who missed out to Lille on the Ligue 1 title recently, are said to be keen to strengthen their defence and have identified the 27-year-old as a possible option.

Could Digne really go back to PSG?

Digne has previously spent three years in the French capital, as PSG signed him from Lille back in 2013 for a fee of £13.5m. In 2016, having spent time on loan at Roma, Digne moved to Barcelona for £14.85m, and Everton then shelled out £18.2m to bring him to Goodison Park two years later.

He has gone to rack up a century of appearances for the Toffees, contributing 18 assists in that time. Among his team-mates, only Gylfi Sigurdsson (10) and James Rodriguez (eight) set up more goals than Digne (seven) in the 2020/21 season, despite him playing as a left-back.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side eyeing two Blues

This may not be the only business conducted between PSG and Everton. According to Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs remain in talks over a permanent deal for Toffees striker Moise Kean, who spent last season on loan at the Parc des Princes.

Twitter account Everton News Feed relayed the report on Digne, and here’s the pick of the reactions from Toffees supporters.
