Arteta must drop 6/10 Arsenal star who had fewer passes than Raya

Arsenal have now had two opportunities to close the gap to league leaders Liverpool and failed.

A week ago Arne Slot’s side had no fixture due to the adverse weather which meant the Gunners could have narrowed the bridge between the two teams to four points.

Sadly for Mikel Arteta’s men, they ruined that opportunity, drawing 1-1 with an impressive Fulham side at Craven Cottage.

Having then beaten Monaco in the Champions League they welcomed Everton to the Emirates Stadium but once again struggled to create goalscoring opportunities from open play.

In fact, Arsenal were so underwhelming that they only created two big chances during the course of the match.

Believe it or not, there were some positives…

Arsenal’s best players against Everton

It won’t come as a surprise to many to learn that despite drawing 0-0 on Saturday, it was the effervescent Bukayo Saka who stood out the most in red and white.

The England international has taken himself to the next level this season, notably scoring five goals and assisting ten in the league thus far.

Despite not finding a goal involvement against the Toffees he was without a doubt the best player on the pitch and was unfortunate not to find the net.

Perhaps Arsenal’s biggest chance in the second half fell to Saka who hammered a volley towards the front post only for international colleague Jordan Pickford to sprawl to his left-hand side to make a fine save.

A constant livewire on the right, it was a shame he didn’t get much help from his colleagues in the final third.

Still, at least assistance was forthcoming from a stern defence with the likes of Gabriel and William Saliba shining at the back. To sum up their influence and Arsenal’s dominance, no two players had more touches on the field than their 118 and 117 respectively.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

That trio aside, not too many covered themselves in glory.

Arsenal’s big underperformers against Everton

One of Arsenal’s biggest underperformers at the Emirates was skipper Martin Odegaard, something that was summed up by his withdrawal in the 62nd minute.

It is unusual for the Norwegian not to create much but that was exactly what happened on Saturday as he left the field with 0 key passes to his name.

Once again, Gabriel Martinelli also faltered on the left-hand side, with his performance against 39-year-old Ashley Young really unconvincing.

The Brazilian won just one of eight duels during the game while Young walked away from north London having completed more tackles (7) than any player on the pitch.

Martinelli’s afternoon wasn’t helped by Mikel Merino, a player who was brought in to improve the club’s dynamics on the left-hand side of the pitch. Sadly, the Spaniard has been inconsistent since signing from Real Sociedad over the summer.

He didn’t offer much at all during his 69 minute outing against Sean Dyche’s side with his performance summed up by the fact that his pass count of 19 was fewer than even goalkeeper David Raya (22) managed.

Truth be told, Merino offered so little in possession that it was alarming with just two key passes and a single shot. He also lost the ball nine times in a game where he looked restricted in his ability to evade the press and keep the team ticking over. It was hardly a surprise, therefore, to see him earn a rather average 6/10 match rating from Football.London come full-time.

A look at his heat map also tells you that he needed to do more. The Spain international wasn’t required much inside his own half but also didn’t show a great deal on the edge of his own area, failing to offer the much-desired qualities Arsenal have been after since Granit Xhaka’s departure.

As a result, it would not be a surprise if Arteta dropped his summer signing back to the bench for their clash with Crystal Palace next week.

While on paper a trio of Declan Rice, Merino and Odegaard should work, a more tried and tested configuration that involves Jorginho or Thomas Partey might be wiser.

Tim Seifert tests positive for Covid-19

Wednesday’s match got a go-ahead just over an hour before the scheduled start

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Apr-2022Tim Seifert has become the second overseas player, after Mitchell Marsh, in the Delhi Capitals camp to test positive for Covid-19. The update came shortly before the scheduled start of Capitals’ match against Punjab Kings at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday. The positive result emerged after a round of Rapid Antigen Tests conducted on Wednesday morning and it is learnt that Seifert, the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter, will be moved to a facility away from the team hotel to isolate. For a while, there appeared to be question marks around the match, but the Kings players first and then their opponents reached the venue, before 6.30pm local time. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the organisers had kept open the option of rescheduling the match, which on Tuesday was shifted from Pune to Mumbai. It is also learnt that the IPL had asked the Capitals team to conduct another round of tests on the franchise’s personnel before they left for the ground.”Things have been a little bit interrupted with Mitch Marsh down with Covid,” Ricky Ponting, the Capitals head coach, said on Star Sports before the game. “Our session yesterday was pushed back. The preparations haven’t been perfect and I addressed the group about the two options we have – we can drag our backsides around or we can take the positives around and realise that we are here for a big tournament with a great franchise. You need leaders to stand up and so far [David] Warner has been great, Rishabh [Pant] is good and Mustafizur [Rahman], apart from an over or two has been good.Related

Capitals allrounder Mitchell Marsh tests positive for Covid-19

Capitals-Royals clash moved from Pune to Wankhede

“The tournament for us so far has been stop-start. I think it’s all there. The players are very aware of the way I want them to play. There have been interruptions with player availability but we haven’t spoken much about that. Two wins in two games here and we should get used to playing on the side pitches.”Seifert is the sixth member of the Capitals contingent to test positive, after Marsh, physio Patrick Farhart, sports massage therapist Chetan Kumar, team doctor Abhijit Salvi, and social media content team member Akash Mane. While there had been doubts about the match taking place after the initial set of positive results, the prospects of it going ahead had brightened by late afternoon on Tuesday, when Capitals were given permission to conduct a training session. The IPL, though, laid down the condition that only the players and the coaches would be allowed to attend the session, which took place at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai. The decision to change the venue – from Pune to Mumbai – was taken at a meeting on Tuesday “to avoid any further incident due to any undetected case during a long-distance bus journey in a closed environment”, since the teams are based in Mumbai. It is understood that Marsh was moved to hospital as a precautionary measure after he felt unwell, including experiencing chills. The others who tested positive had been moved to a separate facility outside the team hotel because the hotel where the Capitals are staying had laid down the condition that anyone testing positive, including those that are asymptomatic, would need to move out of the premises. From the IPL 2022 playing conditions…What happens if a player or squad member tests positive for Covid-19 during the IPL?
The participant who tests positive will have to isolate for a minimum of seven days, and during that period, he will be tested on the sixth and seventh days. For him to re-enter the team’s bio-secure environment, he will have to provide two consecutive negative RT-PCR tests taken 24 hours apart, full resolution of symptoms, see that there are no fresh symptoms for more than 24 hours, and that there have been no use of medications for more than 24 hours. What happens if a team is affected by multiple Covid-19 infections and many of their players are unavailable?
A franchise can field a team if there are a minimum of 12 players available for them, including at least seven Indians and one substitute. If a team has fewer than 12, the BCCI will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If, for some reason, that is not possible, the matter will be referred to the technical committee of the IPL, and the decision of the committee will be “final and binding”.Earlier, when the rescheduling of a match was not possible, the franchise unable to field a team would lose the points to the opponent.

10 years of NXGN: Top 10 success stories among women's football wonderkids

After the launch of NXGN 2025, GOAL picks out 10 success stories from previous editions, from USWNT star Jaedyn Shaw to Lionesses winger Lauren James

It is five years since GOAL's women's NXGN list launched, taking stock of the best wonderkids in the women's game. In the time since, there have been a lot of success stories, players who have broken records, won the biggest titles and established themselves among the best club and international teams in the sport.

It's never easy for top prospects to live up to the expectations around them. Injuries can interfere, transfers can fail to work out and plenty of other factors have the potential to come into play as these talented young players bid to become stars of the game. Fortunately, though, many of them do live up to the billing and plenty of those names on the six NXGN lists to date, after this week's launch of the 2025 edition, have been lighting up the women's game in recent times.

So, who are the biggest success stories from NXGN lists of years gone by? Here are 10 women's wonderkids who have gone on to become superstars…

Getty ImagesEsmee Brugts

Included on the NXGN 2022 list, Esmee Brugts established herself as a regular in the Eredivisie with PSV as a 16-year-old and showed enough quality in her first two senior seasons to be included in the Netherlands' squad for the 2022 European Championship. Capable of playing across the front line, as a No.10, a wing-back or a full-back, her performances for club and country put her on the radar of Europe's top clubs and, after starring in all five of her country's games at the 2023 Women's World Cup, she would sign for Barcelona.

Despite being just 20 years old at that point, Brugts quickly established herself in Catalunya and helped Barca win an historic first quadruple on the women's side in her debut season. Now in her second year there, the young forward continues to be a marvel.

AdvertisementGettyLinda Caicedo

When Linda Caicedo was first named to the women's NXGN list back in 2020, she had only just celebrated her 15th birthday and, as such, was the youngest player included. As a 14-year-old, she had won the Golden Boot in the Colombian top-flight and led America de Cali to a first league title, before signing for bitter rivals Deportivo Cali in a transfer that was supposed to lead to a Barcelona move further down the line.

As it transpired, after starring for Colombia at a flurry of Under-17, U20 and senior national-team tournaments, the flying winger would actually join Barca's historic rivals, Real Madrid, after celebrating her 18th birthday. Caicedo is a star player for Las Blancas and has done some remarkable things for her country, stealing the show as they reached the Copa America final in 2022 and enjoyed a best-ever Women's World Cup run in 2023.

Getty ImagesMelchie Dumornay

The NXGN 2022 winner, Melchie Dumornay was first included on a women's NXGN list back in 2020, having caught the eye in a number of CONCACAF youth tournaments. The versatile midfielder, who can also play in the front line, made her senior debut for Haiti in January 2020, aged 16, and would be on her way to Europe shortly after her 18th birthday.

Despite impressing Lyon, the eight-time Champions League winners, on a trial previously, and having dozens of suitors, it was Reims with whom Dumornay chose to take this next step of her career. A club with a fantastic reputation for developing young talent, the teenager would thrive under head coach Amandine Miquel and inevitably signed for Lyon, the team of her dreams, ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Now 21 years old, Dumornay is a key player for one of Europe's biggest clubs and has played in a Champions League final. More significant, though, have been her contributions for Haiti; the talented youngster helped her country qualify for a first Women's World Cup in 2023 and showcased her talents there to impress a whole new audience.

Getty ImagesMary Fowler

Named to the first women's NXGN list in 2020, Mary Fowler had already made her debut for Australia at that time, aged 15, and was included in the Matildas' squad for the 2019 Women's World Cup a year later. Following that tournament, she graced the domestic league for the first time, with Adelaide United, and impressed so quickly that she was on her way to Europe within just three months, signing for French club Montpellier.

Two years later, a switch to Manchester City beckoned, with her breaking through to become a first-team regular during the 2023-24 season. She remains key for the Cityzens today and holds perhaps an even greater status with her national team, whom she helped reach an Olympic semi-final in 2021 and, crucially, the last four of their home World Cup in 2023.

Chelsea want to sign £115m star who could make Palmer even more unplayable

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought Chelsea, they have invested heavily in the striker department, looking to find a consistent 15+ goal forward.

The Blues have signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Datro Fofana, Nicolas Jackson, Deivid Washington, Christopher Nkunku, João Félix, and Marc Guiu, all players who can play as a centre forward, and all players signed since the new ownership came in.

The best of the bunch turned out to be Jackson, who has netted 24 goals in 57 games since joining the club, also providing nine assists in that time. The former Villarreal ace has formed a lovely partnership with Cole Palmer, who is another investment exceeding all expectations of when he was signed in 2023.

Cole Palmer's incredible numbers at Chelsea

Palmer joined the club from Manchester City in 2023, for a fee of around £40m plus £2.5m add-ons. Since joining the Blues, the Englishman has made 59 appearances, scoring 32 goals and providing 20 assists in 4,708 minutes, being named Chelsea POTY for the 2023/24 season.

Despite playing a mixture of right-wing and attacking midfield last season, Enzo Maresca has looked to fully unleash Palmer centrally, allowing him to float in the pockets, drop deeper to receive the ball, and be involved in all phases.

So far this term, the 22-year-old has made 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in his 1,095 minutes played.

But, there is one signing Chelsea could make to get that little bit more out of their superstar, by forming a dynamic that allows him to further utilise his skillset.

The Chelsea target Cole Palmer will love

According to reports from CaughtOffside, Chelsea are keen on bringing Newcastle striker, Alexander Isak to Stamford Bridge. However, they will face competition from Arsenal, as the sides will look to get the deal done for a fee in the region of £80m, a lower fee than the Magpies’ current £115m asking price.

Kieran Trippier – Isak’s Newcastle teammate – has described Isak as “unbelievable”, and the Swedish striker has certainly been that on Tyneside.

He has made 79 appearances for the Magpies since joining the club, scoring 40 times, supplying seven assists and totalling 5,661 minutes played. So, why would the Toon sensation benefit Palmer and how does he compare to Jackson?

It’s evident that Isak and Jackson have similar playing styles. They look to be involved in the buildup, help their teams progress play via their passing and carrying qualities, have the ability to be an outlet by running the channels, and are capable of getting shots off.

Jackson ranks ahead of Isak in creative metrics, making more key passes and averaging more shot-creating actions per 90, showing his ability to supply for his teammates, as well as himself. This is also proven by the assists per 90 numbers, where the Senegal international is averaging more than Newcastle’s no.14 in this department.

The impressive Swede does possess more natural box threat though, standing at 6 foot 4, averaging more penalty area touches per 90 (5.89), and more aerial duels won (1.05), both key traits Chelsea are looking to add to the squad.

Thus, by adding more aerial presence in the box, it would allow creators such as Palmer to thrive.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Indeed, Isak’s arrival would give the former Man City ace the potential to fully utilise his excellent passing quality, finding clever crosses into the box, and having the ability to mix it up in their play, making Chelsea more unpredictable in their attacking movements.

Palmer has been an excellent goal scorer but this signing could be one that takes him to the next level in the way of assists too.

The list is massively dominated by players from the Saudi Pro League.

One of the greatest forwards to ever grace the sport, Cristiano Ronaldo sits at the top of the list as the top-earner in the sport across the world, playing for SPL side Al Nassr.

Following him on the list is his former Real Madrid team-mate in Karim Benzema who plays for Al Ittihad.

Shakib, Taskin and Mehidy put Bangladesh 1-0 up

Litton Das and Yasir Ali also contributed significantly to a comfortable victory

Mohammad Isam18-Mar-2022Bangladesh have now won ODIs in every country they have played in. They ticked South Africa off the list on Friday, registering their first win in 20 years of touring here. They beat the home side by 38 runs, following a team effort that included three fifties that set up a total of 314 for 7, and two bowlers taking three wickets or more.David Miller was Bangladesh’s last stumbling block but when the left-hander fell in the 46th over, it was all but over for the home side. Miller was stopped at 79 off 57 balls, at a time when he was striking a boundary almost every over. Rassie van der Dussen top-scored with 86, which helped South Africa get out of an early jam, but it wasn’t enough in a big chase.Shakib Al Hasan’s rapid 77 was the centerpiece of Bangladesh total, their highest in South Africa. He added 115 for the fourth wicket with Yasir Ali, who made his maiden ODI fifty. Bangladesh hit 11 sixes in their innings, equaling their record for an overseas ODI.Rassie van der Dussen top-scored for South Africa with 86•Getty ImagesMehidy Hasan Miraz, who gave Tamim Iqbal a bit of a headache after an expensive first spell, ended up taking four wickets including the one of Miller. But Taskin Ahmed was Bangladesh’s best bowler, with figures of 3 for 36.He struck twice in the first nine overs as Bangladesh struck three early blows. Shoriful Islam had Janneman Malan caught behind, before Taskin jammed one into Kyle Verreynne’s pads, plumb in front, and then had Aiden Markram caught at point for a three-ball duck.Temba Bavuma and van der Dussen took stock of the dire situation, and slowly rebuilt the chase with an 85-run stand. Bavuma found it difficult to pierce the gaps, but van der Dussen stroked the ball better, hitting three beautiful cover drives apart from two reverse-swept fours, two hits through midwicket and a top-edged six.Shoriful removed Bavuma in the 27th over but it brought more trouble to the crease for Bangladesh: Miller. He provided the thrust in a 70-run fifth wicket stand with van der Dussen, giving South Africa a sniff despite the steep required rate. Bangladesh could have broken the partnership in the 35th over when substitute Najmul Hossain Shanto scored a direct hit from mid-off. But third umpire Adrian Holdstock viewed just one replay even though TV commentator Pommie Mbagwa kept making the point that van der Dussen’s bat was in the air. It was, as replays showed a few balls later.Thankfully for Bangladesh, van der Dussen fell three overs later when Yasir took a superb diving catch at the deep square-leg boundary. Andile Phehlukwayo struggled through 12 balls, playing and missing frequently, before holing out to Litton Das at long-off.Miller struck a few more blows but Bangladesh were well on top now. Mehidy had Marco Jansen caught brilliantly by Tamim at deep midwicket, had Rabada caught and bowled, and then Miller stumped. This left South Africa 242 for 9 and well and truly beaten.Shakib Al Hasan scored a brisk fifty•AFP/Getty ImagesWhen Bangladesh were sent in, Tamim and Litton played out the toughest period, with the SuperSport Park pitch offering uneven pace and bounce at the start. They added 95 for the first wicket. Litton made his fourth 50-plus score in his last five international innings, striking the ball cleanly against the seamers, and attacking Keshav Maharaj early with three fours and a six over cover. Tamim was circumspect, understandably, having come off a lean ODI series against Afghanistan. But he struck the ball sweetly too, once he was set.It was not just Bangladesh’s first 50-plus opening stand in any format in South Africa, but the first time a Bangladesh opening pair had lasted for more than 11.1 overs in an ODI here. This was the perfect platform for Shakib and Yasir. The pair got together in the 29th over, at a time when Bangladesh had briefly lost their way. But Shakib counter-attacked, hitting Maharaj down the ground as soon as he had removed removed Mushfiqur Rahim. Yasir was getting set at the other end. By the time Shakib struck Andile Phehlukwayo and Marco Jansen for three sixes in a short span, Yasir too got into his groove, striking Ngidi over square leg and flicking Rabada beautifully over midwicket.Bangladesh didn’t lose their shape even though Shakib and Yasir got out in the space of three balls. Mahmudullah and Afif Hossain struck a six each, while Mehidy hit two sixes as the visitors added 91 runs in the last 10 overs.South Africa’s bowlers let themselves down on a wicket that had variable pace and bounce. Ngidi went for 75 in his ten overs, the most by a South Africa bowler at home against Bangladesh. Maharaj and Jansen took two wickets each while Ngidi, Rabada and Phehlukwayo took one each.

Ranji Trophy: Bihar's Sakibul Gani enters record books after hitting triple ton on debut

Sarfaraz smashed 275 off just 401 balls to guide Mumbai to a massive 544 for 7

Saurabh Somani18-Feb-2022Sakibul Gani, the 22-year-old right-hand batter from Bihar, made history by becoming the first man to hit a triple century on first-class debut, on the second day of the Ranji Trophy 2021-22. Bihar piled up 686 for 5 declared in 159.4 overs against Mizoram in a Plate Group match at the Jadavpur University Campus 2nd Ground in Kolkata. Gani hit 341 in just 405 balls with two sixes and 56 fours and shared in a gargantuan partnership of 538 runs for the fourth wicket alongside double-centurion Babul Kumar, who made 229 not out.Gani broke Ajay Rohera’s record for the highest score on first-class debut, set in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season. Rohera had made 267 not out for Madhya Pradesh against Hyderabad in Indore. Rohera himself had also broken the record of a fellow Indian, with Amol Muzumdar’s record of 260 on debut for Bombay (as it was called then) against Haryana standing since 1993-94.

Gani came in with Bihar looking for stability at 71 for 3 in the 23rd over, and dominated all bowlers. He was unbeaten on 136 overnight, and carried on to make more than 200 runs on the second day. He was eventually caught by Taruwar Kohli off Iqbal Abdulla’s bowling in the 149th over. Shortly after, Bihar declared, and by the end, they had reduced Mizoram to 40 for 3.Sarfaraz’s 275 takes Mumbai to 544In an Elite Group D match in Ahmedabad, Mumbai piled on 544 for 7 against defending champions Saurashtra. Both Ajinkya Rahane and Sarfaraz Khan were unbeaten on centuries after the first day, but while Rahane was out for 129, Sarfaraz carried on to smash 275, off just 401 balls. He had been in scintillating form in the last Ranji season, held in 2019-20, piling up 928 runs in just six matches to be the highest scorer in the Elite groups. Three of his nine innings were centuries, and each time he made it humongous, 301 not out, 226 not out and 177. Lalit had come in at No.7, with the score 217 for 5. That was to become 253 for 7, but Lalit helmed the lower order expertly as Delhi ended up with 452 all out. He made 24 to Simarjeet Singh’s 19 in a 48-run stand for the eighth wicket, then 82 in a 92-run stand for the ninth-wicket with Vikas Mishra, and finally 47 out of 59 in the last-wicket stand alongside Kuldip Yadav. Lalit was the last man out, becoming R Sai Kishore’s only wicket in the innings.”It feels good, in fact great,” Lalit, 25, told PTI. “If you would have asked me at the start of the day whether I would be close to double hundred batting with Nos 9, 10 and 11. I wouldn’t have believed it.”I never felt that I need to nudge and push to reach the three-figure mark, or for that matter, any milestone. What are the chances that the tail-ender wouldn’t be out? I had to take chances, and I did. When they spread the field, I had to back my abilities that I could clear the ground. I am happy that I could execute big shots properly.”Lalit, who was bought back by Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2022 auctions for 65 lakh after having spent the last two years at the franchise, said his game had improved under Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting.”I am thankful that I have got Ricky sir’s guidance in the last couple of seasons. I could feel my game has improved by leaps and bounds,” he said. “Obviously, IPL changes your outlook as a cricketer. It’s not about money, but you start thinking that if I have reached this level, then there is no looking back. You have to improve and get better every day.”Openers give Punjab strong startIn an Elite Group F match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh put the Himachal Pradesh attack to the sword while making runs for Punjab, with Prabhsimran hitting a century on first-class debut. Both men had attracted bids at the recent IPL 2022 auction, Abhishek going to Sunrisers Hyderabad for a hefty INR 6 crore while Prabhsimran was picked up by Punjab Kings for INR 60 lakh, and both batted in accelerated mode too. They put on 182 for the opening wicket in just 33.3 overs, when Abhishek, also the captain, fell just short of his century, out for 98 off 101 balls. Prabhsimran carried on a bit longer, eventually out for 123 off 138 balls. Punjab’s quick scoring continued, however, as Anmolpreet Singh hit 36 off 42 and Gurkeerat Singh Mann made 46 off 35. Mandeep Singh lent the steadying hand and was unbeaten on 62 off 123, with Punjab ending the day on 393 for 4, having already taken the first-innings lead after having bowled out Himachal for 354, taking only six overs to pick up four wickets in the morning. All four were taken by seamer Baltej Singh. Imagine him & Ndiaye: Everton can land ‘one of the best CF’s in the world’

Quite clearly, Everton need to improve in attack. Looking at their recent form from one side of the road, it could be surmised that Sean Dyche’s side aren’t doing all that badly, with just one defeat from eight Premier League matches.

But an alternative viewpoint reveals that the Toffees’ colourless performances have left plenty to be desired. On Saturday, Everton drew 0-0 against Brentford at Goodison Park, having stumbled to a goalless draw at West Ham United before the November international break.

With such a daunting run of fixtures coming up over the next month, something needs to change. Attacking success starts from the front, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still letting his side down.

Why Everton need to ditch Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton need to get rid of Calvert-Lewin, and luckily, it’s not going to be too strenuous an ordeal, with the striker out of contract in the summer.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

There’s even a chance that TFG could be walking into the ownership and claiming some cash for the 27-year-old, with Fiorentina keen on strengthening their frontline, fronted by Moise Kean, this winter.

The drab draw against ten-man Brentford has done little to reduce the concerns around Dyche’s system and its long-term suitability. Calvert-Lewin perhaps had a more lively outing than usual this year, but it was still not enough to see him break duck.

As you can see above, tensions are beginning to boil over.

Writing in their post-match player ratings, The Liverpool Echo handed him a 6/10 score: ‘Was denied from close range on a couple of occasions before the break, firstly when he redirected an Idrissa Gueye drive and then when his near post effort was turned around the post by Mark Flekken, but for all his labours, he couldn’t find a breakthrough.’

What Everton need is a new striker.

Everton keen on new striker

As per a report from GIVEMESPORT earlier this month, Everton are among the clubs interested in signing LOSC Lille’s Jonathan David, though it’s understood that the Canadian striker might have reservations about moving to the Merseyside outfit.

His French employers are also reluctant to let him leave for a transfer fee this winter despite his contract expiring at the end of the season – like Calvert-Lewin.

He would relish the chance to move to the Premier League and given that Newcastle United might turn elsewhere, there could be a real opportunity to snap him up and finally restore some integrity to the attacking point of the Blues squad.

Why Jonathan David would be a significant signing

Only 24 years old, David has been hailed as “one of the best strikers in the world” by reporter Tony Marinaro, with his goalscoring performances over the past several years corroborating such a point.

As you can see above, he’s invariably produced noteworthy goalscoring numbers across his five campaigns in France, though his maturity is discernible through increased playmaking numbers that denote impressive technicality.

Indeed, as per FBref, David ranks among the top 1% of centre-forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored (0.90) per 90 and the top 2% for pass completion (82.2%), further emphasising that very point.

It’s quite the stark difference to the striking fortunes of Calvert-Lewin, who ranks among the bottom 14% of centre-forwards for goals scored (0.22) per 90.

Whether Everton would succeed in bringing David to the club is another question entirely, but as long as efforts are exhausted in attempting what would be a marquee deal, at least supporters would see a statement of intent from the prospective new owners.

Who knows, it might reinvigorate Everton’s entire frontline. Of course, not all of the Blues membership require an injection of impetus, with Iliman Ndiaye dazzling since joining from Marseille in a £15m transfer this summer.

Hailed by the earlier-mentioned Boyland as “Everton’s new hope,” the Senegalese winger proved once again to be his outfit’s shining light in the recent draw against Brentford, handed an 8/10 match rating by The Liverpool Echo as he starred as the club’s ‘most potent force.’

Completing all four of his attempted dribbles, as per Sofascore, it’s clear to see why he’s held in such a positive light by the Toffees supporters, and it could be the partnership-to-be that sees David take to the Premier League without seam – maybe even lifting Everton away from the bottom layer of the division for good.

Everton's Iliman Ndiaye

With David providing such crisp and accurate passing and boasting an elite-level scoring record besides, it could be the combination that Everton chiefs have craved for so long.

One thing’s for certain: Calvert-Lewin is not cutting it as he plods into the final months of his Everton career. The English forward has now gone eight top-flight fixtures without a paltry goal or assist, and TFG must surely move to secure a massive upgrade as soon as possible.

Chelsea set to unearth their own Yamal in "crazy" £100m star in the making

In the 2024/25 summer transfer window, Chelsea were active once more in the transfer window, bringing in ten players on permanent deals, and making one loan signing, that of English winger Jadon Sancho.

The most expensive move of the summer was Pedro Neto, who joined from Wolves for around £51.4m upfront, with £2.6m in add-ons.

The 24-year-old has already made 15 appearances for Chelsea this season in all competitions, scoring three goals, providing three assists, and totalling 817 minutes played.

The Blues heavily invested in youth signings yet again, with the likes of Renato Veiga, Mike Penders, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley and Marc Guiu all joining the club.

But there is one more talented youngster Chelsea signed this summer, who will join the club next season, and he could become their very own Lamine Yamal.

Lamine Yamal's career so far

Yamal made his debut for the Barcelona senior team on the 29th April 2023, coming from the bench in the 83rd minute, at just 15 years old. Since then, the hotshot has made 67 appearances for the club, scoring an impressive 13 goals in his 4,274 minutes.

The 17-year-old is now already seen as one of the best wingers in the world, having earned a La Liga title in the 2022/23 season, playing a big part in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, and then going on to win the Golden Boy award in 2024, becoming the youngest winner of the award.

As it happens, Chelsea could already have their own 17-year-old sensation, who is breaking records and could have a similar impact for the Blues as Yamal has for Barcelona since emerging from La Masia.

Chelsea's very own Yamal

Brazilian winger Estevao has had a “crazy” start to his career, as stated by scout Jacek Kulig, already bettering the stats of both Vinícius Júnior and Neymar, in their first 28 Campionato Brasilero games.

In Vinícius Júnior’s first 28 games, he scored five goals and provided three assists. Meanwhile, Neymar netted four goals and provided six assists in his opening 28 match.

In contrast, Estevao has managed 12 goals and eight assists in his opening 28 Campionato Brasilero games, registering more goals and assists than Neymar and Vinicius combined. This saw the youngster become the most productive U17 player in Brazil.

Going from strength to strength, Estevao has already made two appearances for the Brazil senior national team, receiving his first call-up in August this year. His pure qualities on the ball have seen him nicknamed “Messinho” in Brazil, which means “Little Messi” in English.

Estevao is currently valued at £33m according to Transfermarkt, but when we compare his metrics to those of Yamal, who is valued at £125m, everything points towards the Brazilian wonderkid also becoming a £100m player in the near future.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

How Estevao compares to Yamal & Madueke

Yamal saw his value spike from £21m in August 2023, all the way to £125m in October 2024 according to Transfermarkt, showing how quickly this meteoric rise can happen.

With the praise and hype around Estevao already, if he manages to hit the ground running at Chelsea, his value will be set to soar, and this could see a similar rise into the £100m territory, with the Londoners only paying an initial £29m for the Brazilian.

When you compare the Brazilian teen with Yamal this season, and his eventual Chelsea competition for his right-wing spot, Noni Madueke, you can see he already comes out on top in four of the ten metrics analysed.

Now this is, of course, in the Brazilian top-flight, as opposed to the Premier League and LaLiga, but his talent is clearly shining through.

Madueke is currently the starting right-winger for Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, offering high levels of 1v1 threat out wide, the ability to carry the ball (shown by his 6.31 progressive carries per 90), and do his bit on the defensive end, something which is important for Maresca’s side.

That said, Estevao offers an even higher 1v1 threat, managing the most successful take-ons per 90 with 3.42, and also having a higher efficiency to create chances, shown by his shot-creating actions per 90, his key passes per 90, and his xAG (all of which are higher than Madueke), something the English winger is often ridiculed for.

The young Brazilian would have to increase his defensive work, averaging fewer tackles, blocks and interceptions per 90 than the former PSV ace, whilst also not having the same athletic and powerful frame as Madueke yet, with his body still developing at such a young age.

It will be interesting to see how Maresca and Chelsea handle the integration period for Estevao. They could look to slowly integrate him into the team, getting minutes from the bench and cup matches or they could throw him straight into the limelight, with this big expectation to deliver from the start.

His motivation is absolutely to take the league by storm, stating “I want to make history, I want to become the most successful Brazilian in Chelsea’s history”.

The £100m superstar in the making’s mission is clear, win titles, show his potential, and lead Chelsea to glory.
