Leeds could still sign Hwang Hee-chan

Leeds United could still sign Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan on deadline day, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Lowdown: Approach made

The Whites are desperate to bring in a new forward before tonight’s deadline after Rodrigo dislocated his shoulder against Everton on Tuesday.

Phil Hay shared news of an approach for Hwang on Wednesday, with Leeds keen to bring the 68-goal forward to Elland Road. Wolves turned down a £17m move, which resulted in the Whites moving on to pursuing Cody Gakpo.

They had Victor Orta in the Netherlands on Wednesday evening, but Gakpo is set to stay with PSV Eindhoven in another blow for Leeds.

The Latest: Sheth’s claim

In a story shared by GiveMeSport on Thursday morning, when Orta was on the way back to Yorkshire alone from Holland, Sheth said that Leeds could still go back in for Hwang.

The Sky Sports reporter stated:

“The Wolves striker could be the one that they go for, in Hwang, simply because Sasa Kalajdzic of Stuttgart has completed his move to Wolves. I just wonder whether Wolves will now do business on Hwang.”

The Verdict: Desperate

It is turning into a disastrous final few days for Leeds in the transfer window, and it appears as if there is a real possibility that the club will fail to bring in a new attacker for Jesse Marsch.

That could prove costly as thee season goes on, especially with Rodrigo sidelined and Patrick Bamford last completing 90 minutes in the Premier League 12 months ago.

As a result, a lot of pressure could be put on youngster Joe Gelhardt, but there is still time for Leeds to get a dramatic forward addition over the line – potentially Hwang.

Liverpool will regret losing Tchouameni

Liverpool appeared to finish all their transfer activity fairly early in the summer window, with Jurgen Klopp bringing in Darwin Nunez, Calvin Ramsay, and Fabio Carvalho all before July had even started.

However, as time ticked on and more midfielders succumbed to injuries, Klopp’s attitude turned from “it doesn’t look like” while discussing further incomings to admitting he was “wrong” and the Anfield side were actively looking to add another midfielder to the squad as the last days of the window approached.

Ultimately, the club didn’t get any of their original targets through the door, with Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham high on Klopp’s list, but it looks like they might try again next summer for the youngster.

The one deal that the club may live to regret however is missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni, who joined Real Madrid in a €100m (£85.3m) deal.

The 22-year-old joined the La Liga giants from French side Monaco after impressing in his homeland, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists from 95 matches, a decent return from a player whose predominant position is defensive midfield.

With the injuries mounting at Anfield, the Frenchman would have been an ideal signing and someone who would command a starting XI spot straight away.

He has made an excellent start to life in Spain, holding an average SofaScore rating of 7.23 after his first three matches.

Tchouameni has registered one assist, made two key passes per match, and has had on average 76 touches in each game, showing his ability to constantly get on the ball and dictate the play.

It’s been an auspicious start for the midfielder at arguably the biggest club in the world. Klopp doesn’t make many mistakes in the transfer market but losing out on the player that Paul Pogba described as “extraordinary” following his debut for France in 2021 may be a slight erring on his part.

The German has had to settle for signing Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo on loan until the end of the season in order to alleviate his injury crisis and considering their earlier summer targets, it appears to be more a panic buy than one that can add genuine star quality to the side.

Tottenham: Djed Spence now being worked ‘hard in training’

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence is being worked ‘hard in training’ to try and meet Antonio Conte’s high demands, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Underwhelming start

The right-back made the £20m move to the Premier League from Middlesbrough over the summer after plenty of transfer speculation following his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

However, the 22-year-old hasn’t made the start to life in the capital he would have been hoping for having recorded just one substitute appearance.

Conte previously admitted that this was a signing made by Fabio Paratici rather than himself, and that’s been pretty evident given the limited chances he’s received since his arrival.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s belief in Spence

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that Spence will eventually get an opportunity to prove himself in the first team once he reaches the playing standard that the boss expects. He said:

“I don’t think his chance is too far away.

“I think Antonio Conte is working him hard in training and wants his new signings to be tactically aware of what he wants from them, so he’s maybe waiting for Spence to get up to speed and once that comes then hopefully he will get a role in the Spurs starting line-up.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Loan spell needed

Spence has been omitted from the matchday squad for four of the opening seven league games this season which shows just how far down the pecking order he is, so another loan might do him the world of good.

The England U21 star, dubbed the ‘real deal’ by former footballer Trevor Sinclair, provided five assists and netted three goals in all competitions for Forest last term (Transfermarkt), highlighting the potential he has.

Being given the chance to go out and earn game time would allow him to flourish again, and if it’s successful, there’s no reason why he wouldn’t be able to seriously fight for a first-team place upon his return.

Newcastle: Keith Downie shares Callum Wilson injury update

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is ‘doing everything’ he can to get himself fit and ready to play, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Lowdown: Wilson’s injury

After a strong start to the Premier League season saw the 30-year-old net twice in the Magpies’ opening three games, the Toon’s number nine picked up a hamstring injury in the 3-3 draw against Manchester City last month.

The striker was in contention to make Eddie Howe’s squad for their previous league game against Bournemouth but the manager decided against risking his fitness, instead opting to go with August arrival Alexander Isak as the team’s lone centre-forward.

As a result, the Englishman has missed Newcastle’s last four top-flight matches with his hamstring injury.

The Latest: Downie’s claim

Downie has now shared news of Wilson’s attempts to get back to full fitness at Darsley Park.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the Sky Sports reporter claimed: “By all accounts Wilson’s doing everything behind the scenes to get himself back involved as soon as he can.

“I mean he’ll probably be looking at the England squad last week and seeing Ivan Toney getting called up and thinking, you know, if I kept myself fit and maybe scored a couple of goals, that could have been me.

“So, a difficult situation for him but he’s been there and he’s done it before and I think he’s strong minded enough now that he’ll just kind of want to get back as soon as he can.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Could be a big boost for Newcastle

Wilson’s career has been plagued by injuries, meaning that he has been unable to reach his full potential in the Premier League.

For example, the attacker netted eight goals in 18 games last season, a tally which could easily have been much higher if various long-term injuries did not get in his way.

Having played just 49 games for the Magpies since his arrival in 2020, the former Cherries marksman has bagged an impressive 22 goals, illustrating his natural goalscoring ability in the final third.

Therefore, if Wilson can get a run of games behind him without succumbing to yet another injury, his return to fitness will surely come as a huge boost for Howe and Newcastle.

Sunderland injury news on Ellis Simms

The Northern Echo journalist Scott Wilson has now shared a fresh injury setback for Ellis Simms ahead of Sunderland’s upcoming clash at home to Blackpool.

The Lowdown: Backed for Preston return…

It was reported before the international break that the 21-year-old could make his return from injury in the 0-0 draw at home to Preston North End in the Championship at the weekend, but he was unable to feature.

The striker on loan from Everton has been struggling with an injury to his big toe, and he now seems to have suffered a further setback ahead of the game against Blackpool on Tuesday night.

The Latest: Another few weeks out

Speaking to the media in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Seasiders’ visit to Wearside, Tony Mowbray has confirmed (via The Northern Echo) that Simms could now be facing a further three weeks or more out on the sidelines, in what is another setback for the youngster.

Taking to Twitter on Monday morning in reaction to the manager’s update, Wilson labelled it as ‘not such positive news’ for Sunderland.

The Verdict: Big blow

Of course, it is a big blow for Mowbray and his team to potentially lose Simms for another few games on top of the Blackpool match tomorrow night.

The 21-year-old has started his Black Cats career well, with three goals in his first eight appearances in the Championship (Transfermarkt); and with fellow striker Ross Stewart continuing to be injury as well, it leaves the Wearsiders light in terms of centre-forward options.

Nonetheless, Simms needs to be given time to recover fully, as Mowbray will be wary of rushing him back too early.

Forest: Marinakis sacks recruitment staff

Nottingham Forest have sacked head of recruitment George Syrianos and head scout Andy Scott, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy.

The Lowdown: Summer signings

Having won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years, the Tricky Trees set about building a squad capable of retaining their status in the top-flight.

With 20 players having left the club this summer, the Reds were forced into a spending spree in the transfer market. Consequently, Forest welcomed 22 new signings to the City Ground before the cut-off with more free agent additions since, with Steve Cooper’s side having spent a massive £146m.

However, subsequent results haven’t gone the way owner Evangelos Marinakis would have hoped for, with the club 19th in the Premier League table.

The Latest: Percy’s claim

Despite a vast transfer overhaul this summer, a surprising twist has now taken place behind-the-scenes at Wilford Lane.

Taking to Twitter, Telegraph journalist Percy revealed:

“NFFC have sacked head of recruitment George Syrianos & head scout Andy Scott. Review of summer transfer business and strategy conducted by owner Evangelos Marinakis & sporting director Filippo Giraldi. Process underway to appoint replacements.”

The Verdict: Too late?

With over 20 summer signings and nearly £150m spent, the rash sackings of Syrianos and Scott come a little too late in the grand scheme of Forest’s top-flight survival.

If Marinakis had concerns over his scouting department following their promotion from the Championship this summer, a decision as to their futures should have been made ahead of time – rather than in hindsight.

Despite this, two of the side’s top three best rated players thus far this season are new recruits. Neco Williams tops the list with a 6.89 average match rating, whilst record signing Morgan Gibbs-White stands in third (via SofaScore).

Whilst a number of signings weren’t entirely necessary, Marinakis’ decision to part ways with the recruitment pair appears somewhat scapegoating, given the squad were given very little time to gel with one another ahead of the new campaign.

West Ham: Paul Robinson baffled by Noa Lang transfer news

Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has been left baffled by some West Ham United transfer news involving Club Brugge star Noa Lang.

The Lowdown: West Ham make transfer plans…

The Hammers have been very active in the transfer market recently, with the summer window proving a hectic one.

West Ham bought Brazil international Lucas Paqueta from Lyon in a club-record deal, with the former Ligue 1 star following Alphonse Areola (loan made permanent), Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes, Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet, Thilo Kehrer and Emerson Palmieri into the London Stadium.

The Premier League side seemingly mean business off the field, with reports suggesting that they are already making further transfer plans ahead of 2023.

The Latest: Robinson baffled by Lang rumours…

It is reported by club insider ExWHUemployee (via Claret & Hugh) that West Ham are now eyeing a move for Lang as they seek to bolster David Moyes’ options.

The Irons apparently hold a concrete interest in the Netherlands international, with pundit Robinson explaining his surprise to Football Insider.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-5/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The former England goalkeeper said of Lang: “For me, they do not need him. Is he better than what David Moyes has currently got? I don’t think so.

“Look at the players West Ham have got in those positions, the likes of [Jarrod] Bowen, Pablo Fornals [Lucas] Paqueta and [Maxwel] Cornet. They have so much talent in that area.

“I cannot understand why they would go for Lang. He is not better than the players they currently have in their starting XI in my opinion.”

The Verdict: He may be right

As per WhoScored, the 23-year-old has started just three Jupiler Pro League games this season and doesn’t exactly stand out in terms of shots, key passes made or completed dribbles per 90.

This could be put down to a slow start to their campaign, but if West Ham are to remain among England’s best teams, head of recruitment Rob Newman cannot afford to make slip-ups when it comes to identifying transfer targets.

Indeed, Robinson may have a fairly solid point here.

Hay reveals what he saw in Leeds defeat

Journalist Phil Hay has revealed how negatively Leeds United’s supporters reacted to the Whites’ hugely disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Leicester City.

The Lowdown: Whites beaten at Leicester

Jesse Marsch’s side are desperate for a positive result in the Premier League, making the trip to a Foxes side sitting in the relegation zone before kickoff.

A limp performance with some brutal first-half mistakes saw Leeds deservedly beaten at the King Power Stadium, with nowhere near enough quality on show from the visitors.

It was a defeat that leaves the Whites 16th in the table after ten matches and there appears to be growing dissent from the supporters, something that will surely increase the pressure on the manager.

The Latest: Hay reveals away fans’ reaction

Taking to Twitter after the game, Hay shared the unhappiness of the travelling fans:

“You can read a lot from an away end and the dissent has been very audible tonight. They’re not having this at all.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-53/” title=”Latest Leeds United news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Marsch under pressure

Having made a fairly strong start to life at Elland Road after replacing Marcelo Bielsa, there is now undoubted pressure on Marsch after a poor start to the season.

The American doesn’t appear to be getting the most out of the squad and performances feel like they are getting worse rather than better, with three defeats in a row and the display at Leicester perhaps the worst of the lot.

For now, Marsch still seems to have the backing of the board, but the turning of the fans is always a significant moment in a manager’s future – just ask Steven Gerrard – so the clash with Fulham this weekend now feels like a must win.

Spurs: Levy had a nightmare on N’Jie

Tottenham Hotspur had something of a hit-and-miss record in the transfer market prior to Fabio Paratici’s arrival in north London in the summer of 2021, with Daniel Levy getting a number of signings right – such as Son Heung min, Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris – while also getting quite a few wrong – including Tanguy Ndombele, Serge Aurier and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.

And, one more player who undoubtedly falls into the latter category is Clinton N’Jie, the chairman’s £12m signing from Olympique Lyonnais back in August of 2015, with the forward reportedly brought in to help replace Roberto Soldado – who secured a move to LaLiga side Villarreal in the weeks preceding the Frenchman’s switch to Spurs.

However, after starting none of Tottenham’s first 14 Premier League fixtures in 2015/16, as well as being handed just two starts in the club’s first six Europa League outings that same season, it quickly became apparent that the then-22-year-old attacker was not exactly a favourite of Mauricio Pochettino – before N’Jie would suffer a season-ending knee injury in December of 2015.

The following campaign, the Cameroon international was shipped out on loan to Olympique de Marseille, where the £38k-per-week player would score €7m (£6m) option to buy clause in the winger’s contract.

However, things would once again fail to work out for N’Jie at Marseille, who sold the forward to Dynamo Moscow just two years later, who subsequently allowed the Cameroonian to join Turkish side Sivasspor on a free transfer this summer, where the now £1.08m-rated forward has scored one goal over his nine Super Lig appearances so far this season.

As such, considering that N’Jie’s career has fallen off a proverbial cliff since his 2015 move to north London, coupled with the fact that the 29-year-old currently boasts a market valuation that is an enormous 91% less than the £12m Spurs paid for his services, it is clear for all to see that Levy had a nightmare when bringing the forward to the club seven years ago.

Tottenham ‘refuse to confirm’ European Super League stance

Tottenham Hotspur now ‘refuse to confirm’ their current European Super League stance after pulling out of the competition last year, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Super League backlash…

The Premier League big-six’s attempts to sign on to the controversial Super League in 2021 was met with ferocious backlash from a wave of their passionate supporters.

Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City all originally agreed to join the proposed breakaway division which could have financially crippled the English football pyramid by stealing away real revenue.

One by one, each side pulled out of the movement following mass protests, but abroad, European heavyweights Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus all remain part of the Super League project.

Liverpool have already moved to confirm they will never be taking part again, yet according to reports, there has been an interesting response from Spurs.

The Latest: Spurs ‘refuse to confirm’ stance…

When contacted for comment on their stance of potentially re-joining the Super League for a new 2024/2025 launch, the Lilywhites remained tight-lipped.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham ‘refuse to confirm’ whether or not they’re considering the 24/25 plans and ‘refuse to comment’ when given an opportunity to state they’re not interested.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A22 Sports Management, after appointing new CEO Bern Reichart, are targeting 2024 for a Super League reintroduction but are apparently not so hopeful about the involvement of English clubs.

The Verdict: Keep it in the past…

Spurs’ denial of comment is no indication they’re considering the proposal, yet moving to swiftly confirm their lack of involvement could’ve done wonders to alleviate any fears from supporters.

Tottenham fans rightly made their feelings clear when chairman Daniel Levy and co attempted to join the Super League last year and surely there is no possible pathway to attempting the move again.
