The confidence boost Sri Lanka gained from their T20 series victory did not carry over into the start of the one-day internationals as they were trounced by eight wickets in Port Elizabeth

The confidence boost Sri Lanka gained from their T20 series victory did not carry over into the start of the one-day internationals as they were trounced by eight wickets in Port Elizabeth. A masterclass of limited-overs legspin by Imran Tahir snuffed out the middle order as they limped to 181, which proved a scant challenge for South Africa’s full-strength top order.Tahir finished with 3 for 26, including the scalp of top-scorer Kusal Mendis for 62, and did not concede a boundary in his 10 overs to ensure South Africa always held control after choosing to bowl first. Wayne Parnell had made swift work of the openers, before a stand of 72 for the third wicket between Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal steadied the innings, although it was laborious progress against probing bowling from South Africa’s quartet of seamers. It meant that when Tahir made his inroads, with three wickets in 15 balls, Sri Lanka had little to show for the consolidation and the innings frittered away.An opening stand of 71 in 13 overs between Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla, two of the senior South Africa players rested from the T20 series, broke the back of the chase and the target was knocked off with more than 15 overs to spare. For the eight teams taking part, all one-day internationals at the moment lead towards the Champions Trophy in June. While Sri Lanka appear to have many questions to answer, South Africa’s squad for this series is probably not far from what they will take to the tournament, but some players are still in need of performances to cement their positions.Smart Stats
94 Balls remaining in South Africa’s victory. This is their fifth quickest win against Sri Lanka. Four of these wins have come at home.
2 Number of lower scores for Sri Lanka against South Africa in South Africa while batting first than the 181 they scored. Previously they scored 128 at the Wanderers in 2002 and 105 at Bloemfontein in 1998.
8 Number of half-centuries for Kusal Mendis from 17 innings. He is yet to convert these scores to a century. He has scored more than fifty in his last three ODI innings.
Chief among those is Parnell, and he made the perfect start when he trapped Niroshan Dickwella lbw first ball. He soon followed that with the wicket of debutant Sandun Weerakkody, who had only arrived in the country yesterday after a delayed flight, when he had a waft outside off which smacked of jetlag.Sri Lanka knew they had to avoid further early losses, so caution was the watch-word for Chandimal, although Mendis showed greater inclination to attack, twice taking two boundaries in an over off Parnell and Andile Phehlukwayo. Mendis was given lbw on 48, but the decision by Richard Kettleborough was overturned when replays showed an edge off his sweep, and he reached his fifty from 74 balls. But it wasn’t long before Tahir started to unpick the innings. Chandimal, who had taken 47 balls to find the boundary, was beautifully set up by a series of leg-breaks, before Tahir tossed a googly wide which spun back between bat and pad. Two overs later, he removed Mendis, lbw, playing back to a delivery that spun enough to beat the outside edge, and this time the review brought no reprieve.Upul Tharanga, captaining this side in Angelo Mathews’ absence, continued in the middle-order role he had in last year’s tri-series in Zimbabwe despite his 13 hundreds coming as an opener. He could not lift his side, however, when he drove limply to cover, although Tahir deserved credit for switching his line to around the wicket.Sri Lanka’s problems were compounded by a mix-up between Dhananjaya de Silva and Asela Gunaratne, which saw the latter run out after a relay throw from the deep via Quinton de Kock to Parnell at the bowling end.Nuwan Kulasekara clubbed a couple of lusty shots, including the one six of the innings, before edging Kagiso Rabada. With nine overs remaining, there was little choice but to try and see out the innings. They failed by nine deliveries as Parnell and Chris Morris removed the final three wickets. From the start of the 43rd over, they had not scored more than one run off a delivery.South Africa’s top order is daunting with all the big-guns back, and it would have taken a remarkable effort from Sri Lanka to defend the total. Suranga Lakmal’s first ball took de Kock’s outside edge, but the ball fell short of the slips. De Kock could have been run-out from mid-off on 21. However, the way the openers imposed themselves on Sri Lanka’s wrist spinners – Jeffrey Vandersay and Lakshan Sandakan – showed their intent for a ruthless performance.Sandakan, who had claimed 4 for 23 in the second T20, was taken for 10 in his first over, and Vandersay, a late call-up to the one-day squad, 14 off his first. Although Sandakan struck against the run of play, when de Kock drove to cover, boundaries came regularly. Amla barely broke sweat in bringing up his fifty off 56 deliveries, and Faf du Plessis was able to enjoy an extended net after his brief down time following the Test series. While Amla’s slightly soft dismissal, as he lobbed a return catch to Gunaratne, was a disappointment for him, it gave the crowd what they wanted – AB de Villiers at the crease. To chants of “AB, AB”, he played within himself but did loft one over the boundary. Back as captain, in his first one-day international since last June, the day could not really have gone any better.
Pundit Frank McAvennie has been reacting to a Celtic transfer claim regarding Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey.
Are Celtic signing Daniel Amartey?
The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers look set for a busy few months in the transfer market and have already made a start on their summer business, with a move for midfielder Odin Thiago Holm confirmed by the club.
Melbourne City attacker Marco Tilio looks like he could be the next through the door, and another player of interest appears to be Amartey, previously described as "outstanding" and “aggressive” by Rodgers.
Reports earlier this month suggested that the Hoops are prepared to contact Amartey’s agent ahead of a potential move to the Scottish Premiership.
The Foxes defender will officially become a free agent at the beginning of July, and McAvennie has been giving his thoughts on a possible free transfer.
Talking to Football Insider, McAvennie believes Amartey is the type of player Rodgers will want to bring to Parkhead and feels the Ghana international could be a “revelation” in Scotland, who go on to be sold for £20m if he impresses.
“That is the kind of player that Brendan is going to want. The Premier League is a fierce league, it is the best league in the world and it is a lot harder to make it down there than people think it is.
“He might not be getting in the Leicester team but he could come to Scotland and be a revelation.
“They can get him for nothing and if he does well they will sell him for £20m, that has been the blueprint of Celtic for years. He needs game time and he will get it at Celtic.”
Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey.
Who else could Celtic sign this summer?
Rodgers reportedly has a £30m transfer budget ahead of the 2023/24 season, and there has been no shortage of transfer rumours in recent days.
Former Celtic star Kieran Tierney, now with Arsenal, would consider a return to Parkhead this summer on a season-long loan, and the club could still bring in more players from Asia.
It is believed that a significant bid has been placed for winger Yang Hyun-jun from Gangwon FC, whereas Gwangju FC duo Eom Ji-sung and Jeong Ho-yeon have also been scouted ahead of possible Parkhead moves.
Amartey, who has made more appearances under Rodgers than any other manager during his career, would bring plenty of experience and versatility to Parkhead, should a deal go through, as he is capable of playing in defence or midfield, winning the Premier League and FA Cup while with the Foxes, and a move looks like it could be one to monitor.
Manchester United are reportedly ready to battle it out for the signing of a highly-coveted teenage starlet…
What are the latest Man United transfer rumours?
According to The Guardian's Ed Aarons, the Red Devils – as well as the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal – are believed to have made contact regarding a possible summer move for Red Bull Salzburg's Oscar Gloukh.
Writing on Twitter regarding that Premier League interest in the 19-year-old playmaker, Aarons stated: "Understand there is interest from around Europe in Israeli attacking midfielder Oscar Gloukh, who will face England in the semifinals of European Under 21s tomorrow. Arsenal, Man City, Man United and Spurs have all enquired about 19-year-old, who plays for Red Bull Salzburg."
In a further Tweet, the respected journalist also went on to add that the La Liga duo of Barcelona and Villarreal are also interested in the Israeli international, with the former Maccabi Tel Aviv ace having only made the move to Austria for a fee of around €7m (£6m) during the January transfer window.
Who is Oscar Gloukh?
Lauded as "another jewel in Salzburg's collection of talents" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 5 foot 7 ace is unsurprisingly catching the eye of clubs across the continent, having enjoyed a dazzling start to life at first team level.
Having previously netted nine goals and registered eight assists in only 33 games during his time in Tel Aviv, the six-cap menace has since contributed two goals and two assists in 17 outings for Salzburg, having made a strong adaptation to life in his new surroundings.
A player with a "huge future ahead" – according to Kulig – Gloukh may not be expected to make an immediate impact at Old Trafford if he is to join Erik ten Hag's side this summer due to his relative youth, although the diminutive whiz could help to offer further competition and cover to United in an advanced midfield role.
Chelsea's Mason Mount
It would no doubt be an exciting prospect to have the teen talent rivalling recent addition, Mason Mount for a role in the starting lineup in the years to come, with such a battle potentially set to help get the best out of both players.
There may also be a world in which Ten Hag would be able to squeeze both men into his side due to Mount's ability to feature on the flanks, with the pair potentially able to ease the reliance on Bruno Fernandes as the chief creative force in the centre of the park – the Portuguese ace having created the most 'big chances' in the top flight last term (32).
While Mount only created three big chances in the league in 2022/23, the Englishman was typically the man to deliver the goods for his teammates during his time at Stamford Bridge, registering 37 assists in 195 games for the Blues in total.
Although not at the same scale, Gloukh's impressive start to life at senior level has also showcased his creative brilliance, with the £5m-rated asset having racked up five big chances from just eight Bundesliga starts last term.
To then potentially have Mount, Gloukh – and also Fernandes – working in tandem in the years to come could prove to be a real dream scenario for Ten Hag, with it easy to see why the Dutchman is keeping tabs on this emerging, teenage superstar.

Vinod Rai, the chairman of the Committee of Administrators responsible for implementing the Lodha reforms in the BCCI, has said he doesn’t want to take a confrontational approach
ESPNcricinfo staff23-Mar-20175:50
Ugra: Balance sheet shows no shortage of funds in states
The BCCI’s Committee of Administrators will strive to consult with and persuade – and not confront – state associations into compliance of the Lodha Committee recommendations. The Supreme Court had ordered several changes to the functioning of the Indian board in July last year but none of them have been made yet. Staunch opposition from the state associations has been one of the major reasons for the delay and though the CoA said it did not want to use force, it did make clear the only option available was to comply.Having been appointed on January 30, the CoA finished 50 days in office on Wednesday and had invited a select group of journalists for an hour-long interaction. “For every objective to be achieved you need to do it in stages,” Chairman Vinod Rai said. “The thing is that at each stage, whatever persuasive power that we need, and I am saying persuasive in inverted commas, we will apply.”The CoA was set up to both supervise the BCCI – who are without a president or secretary – and help ensure the implementation of the Lodha recommendations. But so far, both the Indian board and its state associations have ignored the deadlines that had been set for them. Even various warnings from the Supreme Court could not spur them to action. So the most asked question to the CoA was how they were going the succeed in the face of such intransigence.Rai said he could understand the state associations’ reluctance to change, considering most of them have been governed by the same set of administrators for a long time and they were being asked to leave. “We will try to persuade them to see the writing on the wall. We know what is to be done at what point of time. They have been sitting for 25 years, you are asking them to go. At some point, they will see that that is the end of the road for them. And if they don’t understand it, they will be made to understand in a language they will understand. You cannot have defiance of the highest court of the land. Greater bodies, more authoritative people have tried to defy the Supreme Court and they have not succeeded.”The only thing is that they have difficulty accepting the practical aspects of it. Hopefully within the course of time they will be able to understand. We will talk to them. They may have some reasonable differences, clarifications etc.. We will try and help them out with it. We will try to bring them around.”The state associations have filed a fresh set of petitions in the court, on the basis of the argument that Article 19 (1)(c) of the Indian constitution protects their right to form societies and function autonomously. The argument has already been struck down in previous hearings of the case. Some state associations have also sought clarity on the nine-year cap imposed on a BCCI office bearer, a recommendation that the court had already approved. “If they have genuine problems about understanding it, we will explain. It is our job,” Rai said. “If they still refuse to understand, then of course we will have to make out a road map of how we ask them to implement it.”Rai, however, insisted the CoA wouldn’t resort to using force to complete their objectives. “There is no question of aggression at all. They [state associations] may not be generous. It is not a question of generosity. They are representing a particular group of people. We don’t have to rely on their generosity. The attempt is to collaborate, cooperate. Cricket has to be delivered to cricket lovers in the form in which they want it. You and I sitting in governance cannot be made into stumbling blocks or road blocks to it because it is not suiting us. Because it is not suiting the way we were accustomed to administer it in the past.”The two other members of the CoA who were present at the interaction – Ramachandra Guha and former Indian women’s captain Diana Edulji – also gave their full backing to the collaborative approach. “We want to do it in a consultative way,” Guha said. “We don’t want to do it in a confrontational way. We want to take everyone (on board).”Upon taking over as chairman of the CoA two months ago, Rai said he saw himself and his colleagues as nightwatchmen. On Wednesday, he was “reasonably confident” of being done with the job by the end of the year.
The turnout was more modest than that which saw Middlesex take the title at Lord’s last September but their look of champions remained ingrained as Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins took control

County Championship Round-up: England hopefuls make their case
Seven months ago, 10,000 people crammed into Lord’s to see the dying embers of their title-clinching victory over Yorkshire – perhaps the most enthralling finish to a season in the County Championship’s 127-year history. Middlesex’s return here came in front of a quarter as many people, on an altogether less salubrious day that was truncated by bad light. Yet for all the contrasts, Middlesex retained the look of champions, as Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins combined to add 241 for the opening wicket.Robson made a pair against Yorkshire last September – no way to end a season in which he had been a crucial member of Middlesex’s side. He has begun 2017 rather better, and followed 84 in Middlesex’s attritional draw at the Ageas Bowl with a century of striking fluency and assurance.A reputation as a steadfast accumulator earned Robson seven Tests with England in the summer of 2014, but here he did not merely accumulate unobtrusively, but dominated.Three sumptuous shots in one over, from Aaron Beard, distilled this innings best: a straight drive slightly to the bowler’s left, a dreamy flick to midwicket and a straight drive slightly to the bowler’s right. This was an outstanding innings, the only semblance of a chance the edge through the slips off Ravi Bopara to bring up his century. The sight of Robson raising his best at Lord’s in early season is familiar indeed: his first match here in 2016 with 231 and 106 against Warwickshire, followed by a century in his next home game too.Robson has not figured in recent England speculation but, at 27, his career is still embryonic. The abiding impression here was of a player more rounded and assertive than when he was picked for England. One pull shot, off Ravi Bopara, was contemptuous, and Robson also used his feet breezily against Simon Harmer’s offspin yet with none of his defensive fortitude lost. Robson’s judgement outside offstump, sometimes an issue during his Test appearances, was impeccable.Sam Robson reached his hundred shortly before opening partner Nick Gubbins•Getty Images
Gubbins was almost as impressive. He enjoyed a bumper 1400-run season in 2016 – including 125 and 93 in that seminal victory over Yorkshire – to earn an England Lions touring berth, and he emits the sense of being one of English cricket’s coming men.He played like it here. Though he drove proficiently, Gubbins was less fluent than Robson; this was an innings defined by grit, chanceless until he nibbled Beard behind shortly after reaching his hundred. Gubbins is determined to improve his game against spin, essential if he is to make the elevation to Test cricket that so many expect. When Harmer came on in the tenth over of the day to bowl his offspin – surely not what Ryan ten Doeschate envisaged after opting to insert Middlesex without a toss – Gubbins greeted him with an exquisite cut through the covers. Adroit on his feet, he twice lofted Harmer for a pair of sixes over long on too, shots infused with nonchalant swagger.”You’re not looking at outcomes – you’re purely looking to face as many balls as you can in the early season,” said Gubbins. “It’s one of those days when you rock up and know that you’re going to be stuck in, and mentally attune yourself to that. It was a bit of a grind at times.”The counter-attack against the new ball – 40 came from the opening ten overs, leading to fielders being relocated from the slips to run-saving positions – left Essex looking bereft of inspiration. Their decision to bowl first is easily criticised, yet cloud cover was ever-present all day, the pitch retains a green tinge and Middlesex would also have inserted had they had the option.Essex’s frustration should be not with ten Doeschate’s choice but their lack of control; they bowled only eight maidens all day. Here was a reminder that most Division One batting line-ups will be far less lax in protecting their wickets than Somerset were during Essex’s victory at Taunton last week.”There wasn’t very much swing at all,” said Chris Silverwood, the Essex head coach. “You have to give credit to Sam Robson, who batted brilliantly, and also to Nick Gubbins for another great knock. Every day is going to be a tough challenge for us in Division One, but we are learning all the time.”As if the hundreds scored by Robson and Gubbins were not enough, Middlesex can draw further strength from Nick Compton’s recovery from a shoulder injury; he scored a century for the second eleven this week at Radlett. Yet whether he will return for the club’s next Championship game is unclear, given the fine impression being made by Stevie Eskinazi. It is a selection dilemma befitting the champions.
Everton are looking at their options in the transfer market to bolster their attacking threat ahead of next season and now a new update from a reliable source has suggested that the club may have reignited their interest in a former transfer target.
What's the latest on Everton's interest in Arnaut Danjuma?
According to former Everton communications director and transfer insider Alan Myers, Everton are interested in signing Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma this summer.
Myers revealed on Twitter:
"All options on the table with regards Anthony Elanga, Man Utd’s preference is a permanent deal or at least a loan with obligation. Everton have a number of targets including Gnonto and Danjuma in the forward positions."
It remains to be seen how much the former AFC Bournemouth star would command, though FootballTransfers currently value him in the region of £18m, which is likely a realistic fee for a club of Everton's calibre.
Will Everton sign Arnaut Danjuma?
Every single Toffees supporter will be familiar with the controversial Danjuma transfer saga that unfolded at Goodison Park in January, which might actually make the player an unpopular option for the Toffees despite their desperate need for attacking reinforcements.
It was reported by Sky Sports that Danjuma was set to join the Merseyside outfit in the winter transfer window, but just days later after the sacking of Frank Lampard, Danjuma was approached by Tottenham Hotspur to join them on a six-month loan instead and within days a deal was done for the Villarreal forward to join the north London club instead.
Now it is looking like the club's hierarchy remain interested in snapping up Danjuma's services and despite his initial snub at the turn of the year, he could still be a real asset to Sean Dyche next season.
The 26-year-old whiz failed to make his presence known in a disjointed Spurs squad during his time in the Premier League last season – tallying up just nine appearances, one start and averaging 19 minutes per game due to strong competition from the likes of Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Harry Kane across his favoured positions.
arnaut-danjuma-premier-league-transfers-everton
However, there is no doubt that Danjuma has the quality and experience to become an influential player for Everton next season as he has proven during his time in Spain that he is a force to be reckoned with in front of goal when consistently deployed.
The Netherlands international has scored 22 goals and registered four assists over 51 appearances for Villarreal, with a goal contribution every 126 minutes played, an output that would be incredibly valuable to Everton next season as they attempt to compete much more comfortably in the top-flight.
Not only that, Danjuma has a wealth of experience not only playing on the left flank but also in the centre-forward position with 17 goals scored from the striker role over 34 appearances, another attribute that would assist Dyche in solving some of the squad's biggest pain-points.
The £34k-per-week forward has earned high praise over his career so far, with former Premier League goal machine Kevin Phillips full of compliments for Danjuma during an interview with Football Insider earlier this year:
"On his day he is a nightmare for defenders. He can create and score goals. He can hurt any defence with his pace and directness.
"He’s shown that countless times. Players like him are a rarity in this day and age."
With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for Everton to secure a deal for Danjuma this summer, as his finishing skills and diversity in positioning could make him a huge asset to Dyche next season.

Everton confirmed their first signing of free agent Ashley Young earlier this week and now a new update has emerged on another Premier League player who could be the next to make a move to Goodison Park.
What's the latest on Everton's interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi?
According to 90min, Everton are one of the clubs interested in signing Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer.
As per the report, the west London club have given their young player the green light to leave Stamford Bridge and now he is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs including Nottingham Forest and Fulham, alongside Everton.
Hudson-Odoi is now in the last 12 months of his contract and Chelsea have made contact with clubs across the world to offer the opportunity to sign their academy graduate.
How good is Hudson-Odoi?
There is no doubt that strengthening the attacking threat will be the top priority for Sean Dyche this summer, as the Toffees' biggest problem last season was scoring goals and lacking creativity in the final third.
It seemed inevitable that Everton would suffer a struggle in front of goal following the departures of Richarlison and Anthony Gordon, as well as injury issues continuing to plague Dominic Calvert-Lewin's availability, and when the 38-game campaign finished last season they were the second-lowest scoring team (34) in the entire top flight.
As a result, the signing of Hudson-Odoi could be a great opportunity for Dyche to repeat the club's masterclass move the last time they acquired the services of another out of favour Chelsea player.
Romelu Lukaku memorably joined Everton on loan from the Blues in 2013, scoring 16 goals in his debut season and made his move away from the London outfit permanently the following summer signing a £28m five-year-deal, after playing just 15 times for Chelsea at the age of 21.
The Belgian striker went on to score 87 goals and register 29 assists over 166 appearances for the Merseysiders in total, before being sold three years later for £75m to Manchester United.
Now Hudson-Odoi could follow in his Chelsea teammate's footsteps, as the 22-year-old could finally earn the first-team football he seeks and prove his worth at Goodison Park in the forward line.
Over 126 Chelsea appearances so far, the Cobham graduate – hailed "amazingly talented" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – has scored 16 goals and registered 22 assists to date, an output that would be a valuable asset to Everton next season.
Not only that, Hudson-Odoi is extremely versatile with experience of playing on both the left and right wing, as well as in the attacking midfield role too, so a move could offer Dyche a player who can cover a number of positions to provide depth across the attacking threat.
With that being said, if the £15m price tag reported is accurate it would be a no-brainer to snap up the services of Hudson-Odoi this summer, as a real chance at first-team football in the Premier League next season could be the making of the Champions League winner, just like it was for Lukaku.
