Derby now plotting move to sign "phenomenal" left-footed player for Warne

Derby County are believed to be plotting a move to sign a "phenomenal" player for Paul Warne, according to a fresh transfer update.

Derby eyeing January signings

The Rams have made a promising start to the 2023/24 season, currently sitting seventh in the League One table ahead of the festive action in the coming weeks. Granted, Derby could be in a better position towards the automatic promotion positions where Portsmouth and Oxford United currently are, but they are nicely poised to finish in the playoff places, hopefully making their way back into the Championship next year.

The January transfer window will allow Warne the chance to add to his squad, should the money and right targets be available, and the Rams have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks. Young Irish midfielder Adam Murphy is one player who has been backed to move to Derby, being seen as a long-term acquisition, while AFC Wimbledon's Ali Al-Hamadi is also seen as an option for the Rams. It looks as though another player has now joined the list of potential additions at Pride Park in January, with a fellow League One ace tipped to head there.

Derby want to sign CJ Hamilton

According to Football Insider, Derby are one of the clubs interested in signing Blackpool winger CJ Hamilton, with the Rams "plotting a move" for him.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

Huddersfield Town and Queens Park Rangers are also seen as potential suitors for the 28-year-old wide man, who is out of contract at his current club at the end of this season. That means Blackpool could jump at the chance to earn a fee for him in January, rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

It is claimed that "Derby are keen to strengthen in the new year to boost their promotion bid", with numerous clubs "ready to test Blackpool's resolve". Derby may not find it easy to bring in Hamilton in January, considering there is interest from clubs higher up in the Football League currently, but he could be such a shrewd addition if they get a deal over the line.

This season, the Rams transfer target has four assists in League One so far this season, highlighting the creativity he can provide from out wide and at 28 years of age, he is someone with lots of experience, not to mention being a left-footed player who can play on either flank, which could appeal to Warne.

Hamilton has even earned huge praise from former Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft in the past during their time at the club together, saying of him:

"I can play him anywhere and he is phenomenal. He's had another match-winning day today. Winning goals are the ones you remember."

Derby may need an extra injection of attacking quality in their squad to further enhance their hopes of going up to the Championship this season, and in Hamilton, they could have a perfect option to bring in. An overall tally of 24 goals and 34 assists combined in the Championship, League One and League Two combined further outlines why he could be a smart signing.

Mark Wood admits time is running out to make England's World Cup cut

Fast bowler believes he is one of five bowlers vying for a single spot in squad, as countdown continues to showpiece tournament

Mark Wood admits he is battling “against the clock” if he is to win a spot in England’s World Cup side.Wood returns to the England side for the final ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Tuesday but, having not played a game in the series to date, fears he may have fallen behind several others in the race for selection. Now, with only one more ODI series to come (the five-match series in the Caribbean in February and March) before England pick their World Cup squad, he feels he is one of five men competing to complete the 15-man party.”In my mind, there’s one spot in the squad for five of us,” Wood said. “Liam Plunkett is going to play: he’s been our best bowler for a while. Chris Woakes has been so consistent. He is a great bowler and he is going to take the new ball. And Ben Stokes balances the team.”So you’ve got one spot between me, Tom Curran, who feels he has got his slower ball back, Olly Stone, who bowls rockets and is ahead of me at the moment, Sam Curran, who can bat, and David Willey, who had a good summer. We’re all probably vying for that one spot.”It’s hard to disagree with Wood’s assessment. With England’s tactic of playing two spinners in most circumstances working well for them, and the management understandably keen to have some left-arm variation – provided by either Sam Curran or Willey – in their attack, it may well prove that Wood is now an outside bet for that final place. With the World Cup having been a focal point of England’s cricket for the last four years – and Wood having been a regular part of the ODI side in that period – it would heart-breaking to miss out at this stage. As a result he is hoping to improve his game in the final months before the tournament, both by lengthening his run-up in order to avoid some of the stress he puts on his body and by developing a new slower ball.”It can be frustrating when you are just on the outside with a World Cup around the corner,” he said. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have one eye on that. I know that, if I don’t do well here, I am one tour away from not making that World Cup squad. And that’s something we’ve been building up to for over four years. Ever since the last one. So I’ve got to do the business.””I’ve managed to swing the new ball out here so that has been a plus. And I have been trying to work on a few new slower balls. I feel I can get better with a few slower balls.”But I’m against the clock a little bit. Everyone is fighting for that one spot so it is not like I can keep working on a slower ball for the next three years.”While such competition for place could disturb the equilibrium in the squad, Wood insists it will not be allowed to do so in this England camp. With Eoin Morgan having confirmed he would drop himself from the team if his form was not up to scratch – he may rest himself on Tuesday to provide opportunity elsewhere – the mood in the camp is, Wood says, selfless and positive.”We’re one team,” he said. “We’re all together. I want my friends to do well. I’m an England fan and I want England to win.”You don’t win nine series on the bounce [a statistic that excludes the one-off defeat against Scotland]. It’s good to have healthy competition without being all bitter or sour. That doesn’t help anyone. And I don’t think Eoin Morgan would have you around if you weren’t behind the team.”Some of the net sessions have been pretty hairy as all the bowlers have been charging in trying to get a spot in the side. I’ve just got to prove myself and get better. And if I can do that, hopefully I should get my spot back.”Meanwhile Chris Jordan, who has recently arrived in Sri Lanka, trained with the squad on Tuesday. Jordan has been added to the squad with a view to playing in the one-off T20I match that follows the ODI series. But while Jordan took part in the warm-up football, there was no sign at training of Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow’s ankle injury remains a concern and it is doubtful that he will be fit to play in the first Test.England may well call up Ben Foakes, the uncapped Surrey keeper, within the next day or two. Olly Stone and Joe Denly, who could make his first ODI appearance this decade on Tuesday, also sat out the football section of training.

Spurs could replace Bentancur with £55k-p/w ace who’s better than Hojbjerg

Tottenham Hotspur face the unenviable task of traveling away to The Etihad to take on reigning Premier League champions Manchester City this evening.

Ange Postecoglou's side do not come into the match in the best of form as they have lost each of their last three top-flight games in recent weeks.

Spurs have been beaten 4-1 by Chelsea, 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers, and 2-1 by Aston Villa, and this run came after they won eight and lost none of their opening ten league outings.

The loss to Villa was the most recent defeat for Tottenham as goals from Pau Torres and Ollie Watkins either side of half time cancelled out the opening strike from Gio Lo Celso, who had given the hosts the lead in the match.

Postecoglou could look to make alterations to his starting XI from that clash with the Villans and his hand will be forced with one as Rodrigo Bentancur is set to miss out, as one of a number of players missing through injury.

Latest Spurs injury news

The Spurs head coach has a plethora of injury issues to contend with ahead of this match against Pep Guardiola's side, which makes the task of picking up all three points all the more difficult.

James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Ryan Sessegnon are all confirmed long-term absentees.

destiny-udogie-james-maddison-tottenham-opinion

Pape Matar Sarr, who missed out on the loss to Villa, was a doubt for today's game and he will not be available due to a slight hamstring strain, which does not suggest that it will be a long-term issue for the central midfielder.

And, of course, Bentancur will not be in the matchday squad this evening as the Uruguay international was forced off injured in the first half of last weekend's match.

The former Juventus man was brought down by a very late challenge by Matty Cash and is now set to be out for ten weeks with ankle ligament damage, which is due to rule him out until the new year.

This means that Postecoglou will be forced into a change in midfield as Bentancur had started alongside Lo Celso in the middle of the park against Villa.

Thankfully, Mali international Yves Bissouma is set to be available for selection against Manchester City after serving a one-match suspension against Villa.

The Australian tactician must now unleash the former Brighton & Hove Albion star in midfield to replace Bentancur ahead of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who came off the bench in his place against Villa.

Bissouma is a better option than the Denmark international and should be brought straight back into the starting XI against the champions.

Hojbjerg's season in numbers

The former Southampton enforcer has struggled to make a positive impression on the pitch when he has been given an opportunity to make an impact this season.

He has made 12 Premier League appearances throughout the 2023/24 campaign to date and left a lot to be desired with his contributions both in and out of possession.

Hojbjerg currently ranks 15th within the squad for tackles (0.8), 14th for interceptions (0.4), and 12th for clearances (0.8) per game in the top-flight.

Despite ranking so lowly among his teammates in those key defensive actions, only five other players in the squad have been dribbled past more than his 0.8 times per match – the joint-most of any central midfielder.

This suggests that opposition players have found it far too easy to get the better of him as he has been dribbled past as many times as he has made successful tackles to cut out attacks and win possession for his team.

In possession, the 28-year-old battler ranks 17th within the group for key passes (0.1) and 15th for dribbles completed (0.3) per outing. He has also averaged 7.96 progressive carries and passes combined per 90 over the last 365 days in domestic and European action.

Hojbjerg, who has lost 54% of his duels and 83% of his aerial battles in the Premier League, has not offered much in the way of quality on or off the ball, as shown by the aforementioned statistics in comparison to his teammates.

Bissouma's season in numbers

On the other hand, Bissouma is better than the Danish dud and has been in sublime form since Postecoglou came through the door.

The Mali international struggled at times during his debut campaign at Spurs with an average Sofascore rating of 6.68 across 23 appearances, with 1.2 tackles and interceptions and 0.3 key passes per game.

He did not showcase his true qualities and the new Tottenham head coach has been able to get the best out of the central midfielder so far this season.

Yves Bissouma.

Bissouma has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.17 across 11 top-flight starts this term and caught the eye with his contributions in and out of possession.

The £55k-per-week whiz has averaged 9.67 progressive passes and carries combined per 90 this season, which ranks him within the top 16% of Premier League midfielders in each of those two statistics respectively. He is also in the top 2% of his peers for successful take-ons (2.14) per 90.

These statistics show that the 27-year-old ace is an excellent progressive midfielder who can get his team up the pitch through passes and carries.

The midfield "monster" – as he was once described by journalist Aaron Stokes – has not shirked away from his defensive responsibilities.

Bissouma currently ranks joint-first within the squad for tackles (3.3), first for interceptions (1.6), and eighth for clearances (1.7) per match in the Premier League.

The impressive whiz, who also ranks second for dribbles completed (1.9) and 12th for key passes (0.5) per outing, excels at winning possession back for his team by going out to make tackles and interceptions to stop opposition attacks.

Overall, his statistics show that he has far more to offer to the team than Hojbjerg, in terms of the defensive and offensive contributions that the ex-Brighton dynamo can make, and that is why Postecoglou must unleash him alongside Lo Celso.

Fakhar set to miss Boxing Day Test against SA with knee injury

The opener has aggravated the knee injury that he picked up in October during the T20s against Australia

Fakhar Zaman stretches forward to defend•AFP

Pakistan suffered a major blow ahead of their tour of South Africa in December with Fakhar Zaman aggravating a knee injury he sustained last month. According to the PCB, the 28-year old opener is expected to be out for “three to five” weeks, which means he will almost certainly miss the first of the three Tests that begins on Boxing Day in Centurion. It is learnt that Fakhar had complained about pain in his right knee after pulling off a spectacular run-out during the second T20I against Australia in October. He had rushed in from mid-on, tumbled to the ground while collecting the ball, and despite not having a clear view of the stumps, still hit them direct to dismiss Ben McDermott. The next morning, however, Fakhar told the physiotherapist that he had a problem and together they worked to try and manage it.Fakhar played a further five limited-overs games with the injury before it was decided that he needed to take time off for rehabilitation. That is why he was not picked in the squad for the ongoing Tests against New Zealand. He will join the PCB’s medical team at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore on Tuesday, where a plan for his recovery will be charted out.It is understood that the selectors have begun to shortlist players for the South Africa tour, where they play three Tests, five ODIs and three T20Is. The PCB has already obtained visas for 25 of them. The Test squad is likely to be similar to the one currently playing against New Zealand, although fast bowler Mohammad Amir is expected to return in place of offspinner Bilal Asif.Fakhar made his Test debut in October and was an instant hit, making 94 and 68 as Pakistan beat Australia by 373 runs. Pakistan have other options to use at the top of the order, such as Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez. Azhar Ali has also opened the batting in the past and Shan Masood, who made a hundred in each innings against New Zealand A recently, may also come into the mix.

Thomson, du Plessis keep Rocks alive with close win

Thomson struck a courageous 71 not out, and in the company of du Plessis, whose purple patch extended into a third fifty in four games, steered a tricky chase with three balls to spare

The Report by Akshay Gopalakrishnan09-Dec-2018

Getty Images

Having totaled 17 runs in three games until Sunday, Grant Thomson left behind his mark in the 2018-19 Mzansi Super League with a courageous 71 not out to keep Paarl Rocks alive in the competition, after a tight chase against Jozi Stars at the New Wanderers Stadium. Barring a reprieve owing to a missed stumping on the ball before he hit the winning runs – which arrived via a crunching extra cover drive – Thomson played a mature, and largely composed innings, giving the Rocks, facing a must-win, victory with three balls to spare.Contributing in equal measure to the win was Faf du Plessis, who continued to dominate bowling attacks with his third half-century in four matches. While Thomson crucially stayed until the end, it was du Plessis who provided Rocks with the impetus to their chase, launching a barrage of boundaries in a domineering display that gave them the security against a brief death-overs stutter and come out unscathed. As if the pressure of a must-win and a chase of 171 wasn’t enough, Rocks had lost two wickets halfway through the third over when the two joined hands. Duanne Olivier hit Rocks with wickets off successive deliveries in his first over, first getting Cameron Delport to top-edge a pull by generating extra bounce, and then harrying Aiden Markram with pace to draw an inside edge onto the stumps.Kagiso Rabada was even quicker in the next over, hitting upwards of 145-kmph consistently and beating the bat outside off. The downside of that sort of pace, however, is the ball flying off the bat even if the timing and connection are a little off, and once Thomson punched Rabada for a four through extra cover off the last ball of that over, Rocks quickly moved into the ascendancy.Olivier undid his good work in his previous over by losing his lengths against du Plessis, who cracked him for a brace of fours. Thomson and du Plessis then closed out the Powerplay by pillaging 19 runs off Dan Christian.Du Plessis was the aggressor through most of this passage. Pulling, driving and punching pristinely, he collected his first 20 runs at a strike rate of nearly 300. It meant Thomson could settle into neatly nudging the ball around into the gaps and turn the strike over, forming the ideal complement in such a situation.Thomson shifted gears in the second half of the chase, starting with a six over deep midwicket off Pongolo that took him into the 40s. Du Plessis survived a close lbw call that same over, and then again in the first ball of the next over, when Rabada believed he had found his outside edge, as Stars were left frustrated. With Thomson unfurling his own range of strokes, he eventually beat du Plessis to the fifty, getting there off 38 balls. The 100 of the stand came up off 64 balls in the next over, and in the over after that, du Plessis had his fifty, with a booming extra cover drive, as Rocks progressed clinically. It was only when du Plessis fell to Christian in the 16th over, attempting a paddle to a ball that wasn’t full enough and arrowed in straight to ping him in front of leg stump, that Stars found a way back in.Dwayne Bravo came out swinging big from ball one but wasn’t necessarily rewarded for it, as Stars tightened the screws, conceding just 12 runs between overs 16 and 18. The only blemish on Stars during that passage was Dane Vilas spilling a tough chance off Bravo’s outside edge in the 17th over. Bravo took toll of the reprieve, swinging Dwayne Pretorious for a pair of sixes in a 17-run 19th over to take out the last semblance of parity from the contest.Rocks also hit the right notes after electing to field, taking out the Stars openers inside the first four overs, Hendricks chopping one onto the stumps and Gayle falling to a blinder out of thin air from David Wiese at cover. That left Rassie van der Dussen to do the rebuilding, and he did a fine job of it, starting with a 73-run stand with Dane Vilas. Van der Dussen crawled to 4 off 13 balls before breaking the shackles by thumping Mungroo over mid-off for four.Van der Dussen manipulated the bowler’s lines and lengths by using his crease well, and by the end of the seventh over, the recovery was fully on, with 41 runs having come in four overs. Van der Dussen’s sequence of six, four and four off Bravo in the 11th over put Stars in sight of a big total. But unlike in the chase, he had no substantial support at the other end – barring a 17-ball 28 from Pretorius at No. 7 – and the difference was telling.
