Tom Abell shines amid gloom as Kent strive for decisive advantage

Mitchell Claydon took his tally of wickets to eight in the match but Somerset still harboured hopes of setting a testing target

Taunton folk have warm hearts. “Hello, my lovely!” says Lucy, joint-owner of Wickets, the finest café on the circuit, as she greets each customer. And next door is The World of Bears, which is not an outlet for merchandise linked to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy but an altogether fluffier enterprise offering visitors “18,000 cuddles”. So let us hope both establishments have a hug ready for Somerset’s skipper, Tom Abell, should he drop in on Monday morning.Abell’s contributions to this game may seem modest but it is not so. By the game’s end he will probably have batted longer (four hours) and made more runs (79) than anyone else. Until Mitch Claydon took three wickets in 19 balls deep in Sunday’s final session, it seemed possible Abell’s 58-run partnership with Steve Davies – their second half-century stand of the match – would ensure Somerset set a formidable target. And even now, all is not settled. George Bartlett and Craig Overton’s unbroken 60-run alliance for the eighth wicket has given the hosts a lead of 133 and Bartlett’s confident cover-drive to Harry Podmore’s last ball of the day symbolised the game’s shifting balance. One doubts Kent will find it easy to chase anything above 150 on the final afternoon.Abell is a lovely bloke and a fine batsman who is young enough to become a much better one if he just concentrates a little more. He captains his team well and scampers after the ball with the enthusiasm of a spaniel in the bracken. His 49 was the highest score in Somerset’s first innings, a feat which hardly ranks with slaying the Stymphalian birds but revealed more application than anyone else displayed. On Sunday morning, Abell watched as his seamers bowled their side back into the match. He took a catch to get rid of the palpably dangerous Matt Renshaw and then early in the afternoon session took the last wicket himself after Kent had chiselled out a modest 38-run lead on first innings.Yet for a few absurd moments in the afternoon session it seemed that 38 might be just about enough to see Kent to victory in their first top division game in nine years. Operating from the River End, Darren Stevens brought one back off the seam to have Marcus Trescothick lbw and next over moved one away enough to take the edge of James Hildreth’s bat. Stevens possesses the craft of the ages but Trescothick’s bat was far from the ball and few home supporters wondered if they heard the sound of the boatman’s oar. Either way, it was the first time a bowler aged over 42 had dismissed a batsman over 43 in a County Championship since John Childs accounted for John Emburey at Chelmsford in 1996.Things got worse for Somerset before their deficit was cleared. Azhar Ali edged a good ball from Podmore to Zak Crawley at third slip and Eddie Byrom fenced fatally at the fourth ball of Matt Milnes’ first over to give a catch behind. Abell was on 8 when that wicket fell and Somerset were -6 for 4. Joined by Davies, a batsman whose totals have not always matched his ability, the captain remained as vigilant as a barn owl in daylight. This will be a low-scoring game, one in which every over has represented a tiny triumph to someone. The pair took their side to tea without further disaster and played a little more expansively on the resumption. The lead grew and some called the situation promising. The temperature rose, too, though it could hardly do otherwise. Encouragements to the Kent bowlers from their colleagues rang out across the County Ground but Davies cover-drove Podmore for two fours and hit him straight for three runs in the 31st over. Riches, indeed. Then five overs later Abell played a mimsy cut to a ball from Claydon he could well have left alone and Ollie Robinson took the catch. Davies and Lewis Gregory soon joined him in the pavilion. We thought Kent might be batting again at a time when some people are attending evensong but Bartlett and Overton resisted and there will be vital decisions for Abell to make tomorrow.Sunday’s late sunlight and balmy air contrasted sharply with the conditions that greeted the players when they had arrived at the ground some nine hours earlier. Yet the morning’s play showed how gloriously absorbing this championship can be. Kent scored 88 runs but lost five prime wickets and the cricket was so well contested it took one’s mind off the cheerless conditions. Late October, you might have said, and a bleak one, had you been standing outside and not glanced at the trees. The session was neatly bookended by Hildreth’s straightforward snare to get rid of Sean Dickson off Josh Davey for 43 and then by Trescothick’s brilliant two-handed reflex effort high above his head which accounted for Daniel Bell-Drummond 15 minutes before the interval.Bell-Drummond’s 84-ball 33 was an essay in restraint and his 47-run fifth-wicket stand with Heino Kuhn took up almost an hour of the session. The partnership ended when Overton nipped one between Kuhn’s bat and pad, then Alex Blake played a dreadful stroke somewhere between a cut and a drive but only edged the ball on to his off stump. That seemed a vital dismissal at the time and still does. Every wicket has mattered in this game and Mother Cricket is not done with it yet.

ZAGA SANTISTA SEGURA O TIME ANTES DO INTERVALO

Buscando o empate, Pintado colocou Yuri, Rogério e Everton.

John Percy: Villa chiefs adore Morgan Rogers alternative they’ve found

Unai Emery and Aston Villa have thus far been frustrated in their efforts to sign Morgan Rogers from Championship side Middlesbrough. Michael Carrick's side have rejected two offers for the forward, and they're adamant that they won't compromise on a fee.

Rogers himself is thought to be keen on making the move to the Premier League high-flyers this month, and Villa are pushing to make him their main signing of the window after an earlier buy-and-loan-back deal for Red Star Belgrade's Kosta Nedeljkovic. There was a feeling, though, that this could become a saga that runs until the deadline.

Aston Villa could sign Duran replacement who's "out of this world"

Unai Emery is keen to reinforce his attack this January.

ByTom Lever Jan 25, 2024

As it turns out, Villa may be taking matters into their own hands by running the rule over an alternative who's also been impressing in the second tier.

Villa send scouts to watch Rowe

According to The Telegraph's John Percy, Villa are showing a "strong interest" in Jonathan Rowe at Norwich City. Three of the club's scouts were in attendance to watch him at Elland Road as Leeds beat Norwich 1-0 in midweek.

Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.

Percy clarifies that "Villa are still hopeful" of landing Rogers, but Rowe is very much "on their radar" as a possible Plan B after catching the eye with his impressive performances so far this season. After all, they wouldn't be sending multiple members of their recruitment team if they weren't huge admirers.

Rowe edges Rogers for goal threat

Norwich manager David Wagner recently said there are "no indications" that Rowe would be moving on and expressed confidence that he would remain with the Canaries past the winter deadline, but an official bid from Villa would drastically alter the landscape.

A 20-year-old academy graduate, Rowe is one short of 50 appearances for the club, with 31 of those coming this season. He's capable of playing on both wings and has been immensely productive this season, scoring 12 goals without any penalties to rank third in the division. It's worth noting that the England Under-21 international has over-performed his xG by a whopping 6.9, and while this shows that he's been devastating in front of goal, Villa would have to expect an initial regression, especially in a stronger league.

Greg Crane, one of Rowe's former coaches at Carrow Road, says he's a player who's always possessed a certain "wow factor", and he's demonstrating that in the second tier this season. The table below shows how he compares with Rogers as a goalscorer, creator and one-on-one threat:

You can see that the only area where Rogers has a standout advantage is assists, and Rowe more than makes up for that by finding the net more often. Fouled 50 times already this season (the fifth-most in the league), he's a player defenders find difficult to stop by fair means.

It remains to be seen how much Norwich will demand for his signature, but if he's available for less than Rogers, then there's a strong case for Villa pivoting away from the Boro man in the final days of the window.

England team 'has grown up together' – Jos Buttler

Like a highly specialised fathers’ group, this squad, largely unchanged since the last World Cup, have been through a lot

Alan Gardner21-May-2019There was a moment in England’s final ODI against Pakistan, on a clear, bright spring afternoon in Yorkshire, that spoke to the sense of possibility and excitement that surrounds the team right now, a matter of days from the start of a home World Cup. When Jos Buttler stuck out a boot to block Sarfaraz Ahmed’s back-foot glide, and then in the same movement swept up the rebound and ran out the Pakistan captain as he stood on the brink of a century, it suggested even Dame Fortune might have developed a soft spot for England. It was a moment of great skill, with a nod to that wiliest of stumpers MS Dhoni, as well as being, according to Buttler, “really lucky” – but then which successful team didn’t occasionally require the rub of the green? Australia may be the self-styled “lucky country”, while downbeat fatalism is more of an English vibe, but then the England of Buttler and captain Eoin Morgan is not quite the same as those that have gone before.”It’s certainly the first time it has got someone out,” Buttler said of his footwork at Headingley. “Obviously Dhoni was one of the first guys I saw doing that kind of thing – watching batsmen shape up to play certain shots, trying to use your leg to stop it. I was just really lucky that it dropped next to the stumps and he’d set off for a run.”That dismissal had been preceded by another run-out, in which Buttler’s role was to throw to the non-striker’s end, where Adil Rashid collected and swivelled to back-hand the ball unsighted on to the stumps. Far from showboating at the end of a series that England would win 4-0, this was just the sort of casual brilliance that occurs for a team when everything clicks – and a sign that their hopes of becoming the first from England to lift the World Cup will not be weighed down by doubt, expectation or a rather dismal history in the competition.”I’m really excited by the buzz,” Buttler said, speaking at the premiere of OPPO’s TV advert to launch their global partnership with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. “There’s pressure and expectation but I think that’s to be embraced, we can use that as a positive for the team. We’re playing in our own conditions, it allows us to get away from the tournament when the pressure gets ramped up, we can escape to friends and family as well. It’s an amazing opportunity to be around at the right time and play in a home World Cup.Jos Buttler•PR

“It’s a lot of fun [playing for England], that’s one of the main things. The brand of cricket we’re trying to play and the way we’ve been trying to really express ourselves and push the boundaries of what we’re capable of, it breeds a lot of fun.”The cricket we’re playing on the field has been really exciting to watch, and we’ve obviously had some success. The dressing room is a brilliant dressing room to be part of, a close bunch of guys, there’s a lot of fun, a lot of mickey-taking and it’s just a great environment to be in. It’s definitely the changing room I love being in the most, and I think that gets portrayed on the field.”While England appear to revel in their current status as world No. 1 and a side repeatedly pushing at the boundaries of the 50-over game, they do not get too hung up on success, either. Team spirit, as Steve Archibald once put it, may be an illusion for the winners’ podium but there are tighter bonds in the England dressing room, where a generation of players have come of age together – Buttler became a father a month ago, while several of his team-mates, including Joe Root, Jason Roy and Chris Woakes, also have young children.Like a highly specialised NCT group, this England squad, largely unchanged over the four years since the last World Cup, have been through a lot together. And while Buttler is a character who always seems to have been able to separate professional failure from personal fulfilment, the sight of him marking his audacious 50-ball hundred in the second ODI against Pakistan with a baby-rocking celebration for young Georgia Rose hinted at great freedom happily cohabiting with great responsibility; suggesting, perhaps, that England have brought balance to their undoubted force.”It definitely puts things in perspective, which is always something I’ve really enjoyed about my cricket – trying to keep perspective on it, remember to enjoy it, it’s not the be all and end all,” Buttler said. “She certainly does that, it’s great to come home after a good or bad day and realise it doesn’t really matter that much.”Another good thing about the side is there’s quite a few of us in the same boat at the minute, being new fathers, so it’s a topic of conversation around the dressing room … It’s been great fun, part of the journey of the side. A lot of us have spent a lot of time together and played a lot of cricket together as youngsters and now quite a few have young families, so it’s a nice feeling.”I think the team has grown up together in the last few years, it’s very genuine that the guys enjoy each other’s success, enjoy each other’s company. We really do see that in the cricket, it does transform those relationships in the dressing room and off the field, into the performances on it.”It will soon be time for England to be judged on those performances, and Buttler is confident that he and his team-mates can live up to the external hype and go on to lift that elusive trophy: “Yeah we can, we definitely can, but it’s down to us go and do it.” The World Cup is tantalisingly near but there is a week-long lacuna to fill with media obligations and squad announcements, warm-up fixtures and, probably, a few night-time nappy changes. Unsurprisingly, Buttler can’t wait to get going.”It’s almost a feeling of you just want the tournament to start proper. We had four games against Pakistan, one washed out, two more warm-up games to come… We just want the first game to start. I think everyone’s ready, there’s been a lot of talk around the World Cup and the build-up. The date everyone’s really looking to now is that one against South Africa.”Jos Buttler was speaking as Global Partner OPPO unveiled their ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 TV advert and launched the OPPO Reno Series. Poch must now drop Chelsea’s 4/10 problem and Caicedo vs Villa

It was another dreadful day at the office for Chelsea on Sunday, as they threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 4-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

The embarrassing result was made all the worse due to the fact that it was at Stamford Bridge, and it came just four days after the team fell to a 4-1 defeat away to Liverpool.

There were a number of players who put in some genuinely shocking displays against the Midlands outfit.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino

However, there were two who managed to stand out from the crowd for all the wrong reasons and must be dropped by Mauricio Pochettino for the FA Cup game against Aston Villa.

Moises Cacido's game vs Wolves in numbers

The Blues' £115m summer signing, Moises Caicedo, was easily one of the worst performers on the pitch, and that's taking into account the assist he provided for Cole Palmer's goal.

So poor was the Ecuadorian international's performance that he was given a 3/10 by the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, who claimed the midfielder was 'caught in possession multiple times, including for Cunha's equaliser.'

A good indication of how the 22-year-old's afternoon went was the fact that he was unceremoniously hooked just 63 minutes into the clash, primarily for his sloppy play and inability to keep hold of the ball.

In his 63 minutes of action, he lost possession eight times (once every 7.87 minutes), failed to complete his only dribble, lost four out of five ground duels, and was at fault for Cunha's goal.

In all, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man had a dreadful game, although one of the few Chelsea players to come out of Sunday looking just as bad is Raheem Sterling.

Raheem Sterling's game vs Wolves in numbers

Sterling managed to stay on the pitch nine minutes longer than his young teammate, but that extra time did very little to help his case. If anything, the longer he was on the pitch, the harder it was to deflect from his poor performance.

That said, Kinsella obviously thought his display was marginally better than Caicedo's, as he gave the former Manchester City ace a 4/10, with his main criticism being he 'missed an important chance to equalise.'

However, his performance had more problems than a missed chance, as players don't get booed off the pitch for that.

In his 72 minutes of football, the Englishman only managed to register an expected assists figure of 0.05, played one inaccurate cross, took two shots off target, won two of his six ground duels, lost possession eight times, committed two fouls, and only succeeded with one dribble.

Ultimately, fans know just how good both players can be, so their frustration is understandable, and with the FA Cup game against Villa being so crucial for their season, Pochettino would be wise to take them out of the team – and out of the firing line – at least for now.

Jason Roy avoids suspension after outburst against umpires

England opener fined 30% of his match fees in addition to being handed two demerit points

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jul-2019Jason Roy has avoided suspension, and only been slapped with a 30% fine of his match fees, for his animated outburst aimed at umpire Kumara Dharmasena after being given out – incorrectly – in the World Cup semi-final against Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday.Roy, leading England’s chase of Australia’s 223, was batting on 85 when he attempted to pull Pat Cummins’ short delivery and missed by a fair margin, as replays later confirmed. Alex Carey dived to his left behind the stumps and pulled off an excellent collection and went up in appeal along with the bowler and some of the Australian fielders. Umpire Dharmasena looked uncertain but raised his finger, and with Jonny Bairstow having wasted England’s review earlier in the innings, Roy had to go.He stood his ground at first and then walked off clearly unhappy, remonstrating with the umpires – Marais Erasmus was the other on-field official – on his way out and making his displeasure obvious. The stump mics even caught a furious Roy yelling “that’s f***ing embarrassing”.It seemed that he might draw the ire of the match officials for his show of dissent and cop a serious sanction, but was allowed to get away with the fine and two demerit points.Demerit Points stay for a period of two years on a player’s disciplinary record from the date of enforcement. If Roy is handed two more demerit points, he will run the risk of a suspension point, two of which will then lead to a ban of one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever is scheduled first.Roy’s performance with the bat – 85 off 65 balls with nine fours and five sixes – made a big difference to England’s cause as they crossed the line with eight wickets and 107 balls in hand, reaching their fourth World Cup final and first since 1992.Roy is a key member of their plans, his blazing starts, which have so far added up to 426 runs in six innings, a big part of their success in recent years. So the fact that he has been let off with a rap on the knuckles and not handed a more severe punishment, perhaps even a one-match suspension, will make the England camp happy.

Caxias segura o Juventude e permanece no G-4

Pressão do Ju

Jhon Cley soltou o pé, a bola ganhou altura e explodiu no travessão.
