Fast bowler has all the attributes for English conditions, but lessons learnt from previous trips may stand him in good stead

Jackson Bird celebrates a wicket•Getty Images
Watch Jackson Bird bowl in Australia and most swiftly reach a similar conclusion: perfect for England. Tall, accurate and generating bounce and movement both ways, he has long been among the most consistent performers down under, as demonstrated by his recurring presence around the fringes of the Test team in a decidedly strong era for pacemen.Take Bird some 20 hours’ flying time to the other side of the world, however, and his seemingly well-grooved skills have tended to desert him. He struggled for impact in his one Test here, at Durham in 2013, and two county stints in 2015 and 2016 at Hampshire and Nottinghamshire tallied 34 wickets in 11 games at an average near enough to 40, while also giving up more than 3.5 runs per over.Nevertheless, Bird has continued to front up, earning a berth on the Australia A tour and thus a chance at Ashes selection by hoarding 50 wickets at 22.22 for Tasmania in 2018-19, after 37 at 21.81 the previous summer. Ahead of the internal trial match between two Australian sides that will provide the selectors with the final information they need to cut 25 players down to 16, Bird knows he is duelling for, at best, one remaining bowling spot with the likes of Peter Siddle, Chris Tremain and Michael Neser. When he takes the Dukes ball in Southampton, he will do so with the words of no less a Dukes exponent than Stuart Broad in his mind – they are worth recounting for all of Australia’s Ashes aspirants. “I’m probably not trying to swing the ball as much as I used to,” Bird said. “I’ve fallen into the trap over here a couple of times when I’ve come and played county cricket as well, to just focusing on swinging the ball rather than bowling the right length and I think that’s what’s cost me really.”I’ve spoken to a lot of guys that have played cricket over here, in either Ashes or guys I’ve played with, guys like Stuart Broad and stuff like that, and they just say you’ve got to bowl the right length that’s going to hit the top of the stumps or hit the knee roll [on the pad] and if the conditions suit it will swing anyway.”That’s all I’m trying to focus on doing and I think in the spells where I’ve bowled a bit full or been too expensive it is probably for that reason, so the spells that I’ve bowled well in I’ve been hitting the wicket and hitting the top of the stumps – it’s a good blueprint going forward.”The memories Bird has accumulated from numerous England trips should give him a decent chance of squeezing into the Ashes squad, although he was realistic about the fact that while many of the group assembling in Southampton on Thursday were already nailed on, he was very much in the group on the edge of things.”I assume there’s probably only one spot available, if that, for the fast bowlers, so I’m enjoying my time over here,” Bird said. “We’ve got a good bunch of guys that have had a good couple of weeks in this Aussie A stuff and we’re all looking forward to getting down to Hampshire.”I felt pretty good, I think I’ve improved from Arundel last week, so made a couple of good strides over the last week. I probably went for a couple of runs in my first spell but I thought I brought that back nicely and bowled a good spell in the middle of the day and, yeah, was pretty happy with the hit-out.”Anytime you come up against a Lions team, it’s a good hit-out, and this game was no different. There were a couple of guys in their Test squad against Ireland that were playing, so it’s good to bowl to a few of their batters who are on the fringe as well, in case they do get picked in the Test squad and you do play against them, at least you’ve got a bit of experience against them. You can never take that too lightly.”Frustration at Cricket Australia over the quality of county opposition rolled out for warm-up games on previous Ashes tours has manifested itself in the pitting of the two Australian sides against one another in Southampton next week. While the selection of the teams is a mystery, Bird revealed that the groups will be training separately, a likely necessity due to the sheer size of the group otherwise.”We don’t really know what the teams are going to be and how they’re going to pick the teams so that’ll be interesting to see what happens there in the next couple of days,” Bird said. “I think we’ve got a bit of an idea of what’s going to happen, I think were training separately and stuff like that, so we’ll at least try and make this game as competitive as possible.”It’s the only red ball hit-out for a couple of the guys that have been playing in the World Cup. I think those games can drag on a bit if they’re not taken too seriously so hopefully it’s 100% the whole time.”And with all players and staff crammed into the one hotel, that could make for some intriguing dynamics at the breakfast bar, among other places. “It might be a team rule, can’t fraternise with the opposition!” Bird joked. “It’ll be pretty funny I reckon, especially after a couple of weeks on tour, there’s going to be a few blokes who’ll cop it from other blokes I reckon, airing a bit of their grievances over the tour. It’ll be good fun.”
In January, Crystal Palace were extremely active in the transfer market, but they were still unable to fix the striker dilemma.
The lack of a true centre forward that brings reliability has haunted the Eagles over the years, and it has been one reason why the club has stayed midtable.
Christian Benteke, Odsonne Edouard, and Jean-Phillipe Mateta have all failed to nail down the spot on a full-time basis, with their lack of goals costing the team.
However, a player that Roy Hodgson let go of could have just been the fix if he had been given more time.
Edouard and Mateta's Palace record
The French duo both arrived at the club in the 2021/22 season for a combined fee of around £23m, but neither of them has impressed enough to become the main focal point of the team.
Edouard has played 88 games for Palace, scoring just 20 goals and contributing to five goals, whereas Mateta has played 91, scoring 16 and providing five assists, which is an even worse return.
Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta in action.
Usually, a side may put up with a striker’s lack of goals due to the influence they have on other aspects of the performance, but almost all of the positives in the Eagles' attack come from Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze.
This season, the former Mainz player has scored six goals across 24 matches, and he’s on course to have his best season yet. Edouard is actually Palace’s joint top scorer in the league this season with six goals, but four of those came in the first five games of the season.
Palace could then be left to rue the sale of a player who is outperforming both those two men of late…
Alexander Sorloth’s stats since leaving Palace
Alexander Sorloth’s time in London will not be remembered fondly by the individual himself, as he only started four of his 16 Premier League games and never scored in the top flight.
The 28-year-old joined Hodgson’s side for a fee of around £9m in 2018, and despite only scoring once in his 20 appearances for the club, the club were able to sell him to RB Leipzig in 2020 for double what they paid.
Since then, Sorloth has developed into a fairly reliable goal-scorer for all three of his next clubs: Leipzig, Real Sociedad, and now Villarreal, netting 40 goals since his departure from Selhurst Park.

The 6 foot 5 number nine has played 25 games across all competitions this season, scoring ten goals and picking up four assists, which proves he has the ability to bring others into the game as well as score. He’s also proved that he can do it on big occasions, as just two weeks ago he scored and set up two goals in Villarreal’s 5-3 win away to Barcelona.
Furthermore, having a striker who can score from nothing is key in the Premier League, and based on the clip above he can certainly provide that.
In truth, Sorloth was never really given a real chance at Palace, despite thriving on loan at Trabzonspor, where he netted 33 goals and provided 11 assists in 49 games, and he is exactly what the side could do with right now to progress.
Misbah-ul-Haq has resigned from the PCB cricket committee and applied for the position of head coach of the Pakistan national side
Umar Farooq26-Aug-2019
AFP
Misbah-ul-Haq’s interest in taking over as head coach of the Pakistan national side was made official after he resigned from the PCB’s cricket committee and followed it up by formally applying for the vacant position. Misbah, who is already working as camp commander for a 20-man squad ahead of the start of Pakistan’s domestic season, called it “everyone’s dream” to become coach of the Pakistan team.”It has been interesting to see my name being mentioned as a future head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, but the fact is I only made the decision today,” Misbah said on Monday. “I am applying for the head coach’s role fully aware that the competition will be tough. I envisage there will be a few more very competent and highly qualified people applying for one of the most challenging jobs in the game.”Misbah decided to step down from the cricket committee in the wake of reports that he was being considered for the position of head coach. The PCB needed to rebuild their coaching staff after having brought to an end the tenure of Mickey Arthur and his team earlier this month. The deadline for submitting applications concluded today, with the PCB seeking someone who was at least a Level 2 coach “with relevant experience for at least three years” with elite cricketers. It is notable that Misbah does not have three years of coaching experience – indeed, he retired less than three years ago – but with him being the only one to formally make his interest public, he is the undisputed favourite to win the role.Ironically, one of Misbah’s biggest contributions while part of the cricket committee was leading the call to bring down the curtain on Arthur’s time as head coach. With the contracts of Arthur, batting coach Grant Flower, bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, and fitness trainer Grant Luden all scheduled to end on August 15, the PCB considered whether to award them extensions. Arthur and Flower, at least, had expressed an eagerness to continue. Arthur was given a chance to present his report following the World Cup, which was widely seen as a chance for him to defend his record and make a case for an extension. However, the decision not to extend the contracts was arrived at following a five-hour PCB cricket committee meeting. ESPNcricinfo understands that Arthur wanted two more years on the job, but the recommendations of the cricket committee, on which Misbah was an influential voice, advised against a renewal. Now, mere weeks on, Misbah appears the frontrunner to succeed the man he played under as captain for a year.
Assim é a Libertadores.
– É a força do grupo.
There has been plenty of change at Celtic since the end of last season with a turnover of both coaching and playing staff over the past nine months.
Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou left to join Tottenham Hotspur and was replaced by Brendan Rodgers, who arrived for his second spell in Glasgow.
First-team stars Aaron Mooy, due to his retirement, Jota, and Carl Starfelt, who were both sold, all left and the club moved to bolster their squad in the transfer market with a host of new signings.
Celtic's former forward Jota.
The likes of Luis Palma, Maik Nawrocki, Hyun-jun Yang, and Paulo Bernardo, among others, were signed in the summer, and were later joined by Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah during the January transfer window.
It seems likely that there will be more incoming business in the summer later this year as one first-team star has already confirmed that he will be moving on. Joe Hart will retire at the end of the season when his current contract with Celtic comes to an end.
Celtic eyeing Joe Hart replacement
The Scottish giants are reportedly eyeing up a current Premier League number two to come in and replace the former England international for the 2024/25 campaign.
According to Football Insider, the Hoops 'would love' to sign Liverpool shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher to be their new number one moving forward.
The report claims that the Bhoys will be in the market to sign a goalkeeper to replace Hart, rather than relying on any of their current back-up options; Scott Bain and Benjamin Siegrist.
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
However, it will not be an easy deal for Celtic to do as the outlet states that it would take a 'big-money' offer to secure his services this summer.
Football Insider also claims that Rodgers may struggle to convince the Republic of Ireland international to make the switch to Glasgow as there may be Premier League interest in his signature, as they state that Nottingham Forest were keen on him in January.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was also linked with Celtic earlier this season but a move for the Ukraine international now seems unlikely as he is currently starring for the Spanish side in LaLiga and the Champions League.
If the Hoops can strike a deal to sign Kelleher at the end of the season then the Irish colossus could come in as an ideal replacement for Hart, given his age and quality.
Joe Hart's season in numbers
The veteran shot-stopper has enjoyed a solid campaign in the Scottish Premiership so far but did struggle in the Champions League earlier this term.
Hart, who turns 37 this year, conceded 15 goals in six group stage matches in Europe's premier cup competiton as Celtic finished bottom of the table.
He underperformed as a shot-stopper as the ex-Manchester City star conceded 1.7 more than the average goalkeeper would be expected to based on the post-shot xG of the shots against him.
Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.
The 36-year-old giant also ranked within the bottom 22% or lower for percentage of crosses stopped at 1.2% and defensive actions outside of the penalty area per 90 (0.17), which shows that he struggled to control his area and sweep behind his defence.
Meanwhile, Hart has saved 70% of the shots on his goal in the Premiership and kept ten clean sheets in 26 appearances for the Scottish giants.
He has not made a single error that has led to a shot or a goal for the opposition in the top-flight so far this season, which suggests that the English ace has been a solid and reliable performer.
Hart, who has made 139 appearances for the Hoops in all competitions to date, has actually improved in comparison to his form during the 2022/23 campaign.
The former Tottenham Hotspur back-up played 37 Premiership games for Celtic last season and saved 65% of the shots against him, to go along with four errors that led to shots for the opposition.
This suggests that the Bhoys number one is going out on a high this summer as his performance levels have actually increased over the last 18 months or so, rather than a natural drop-off with age.
Why Caoimhin Kelleher is an ideal Hart replacement
Rodgers could now land a dream replacement for Hart by signing Kelleher, who is 11 years younger than the current first-choice and could be a long-term option for the club.
He is currently the second-choice at Anfield behind Brazil international Alisson and has caught the eye when called upon over the past few years.
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
In ten Premier League appearances for Liverpool in his career, the Irish ace has conceded 0.2 more goals than expected based on the post-shot xG value of the shots against him.
This suggests that he has been a solid shot-stopper who has not drastically under or overperformed based on the quality of the efforts on his goal.
In seven outings in the Champions League and Europa League combined for the Reds, Kelleher has let in 0.1 fewer goals than expected based on post-shot xG.
Kelleher has also showcased his quality on the big stage with a phenomenal performance against Chelsea at Wembley in the League Cup final on Sunday.

Speaking after the match, Klopp heralded him as "the best no.2 in the world" and the statistics, in the table above, show why his manager was so quick to praise him.
The Ireland international was unbeatable between the sticks and played a crucial role in his side's win, with his stunning close-range save from Cole Palmer in the first-half a key moment in the game.
In two finals for Liverpool – interestingly both against Chelsea – Kelleher has saved 100% (12/12) of the shots against him and prevented 3.9 xG in total, which shows that he has the quality and mentality to perform on the biggest stage.
Therefore, the 25-year-old colossus could be the perfect player to replace Hart as he has all the tools to be a success in Glasgow, due to his age, quality, and ability to deliver top-class displays under pressure.
It is now down to Rodgers and the club to work hard to secure a deal to bring him to Parkhead for the 2024/25 campaign and beyond.

Manchester United have struggled for consistency this season, with only an FA Cup and a top-four spot up for grabs.
Although change has been occurring behind the scenes, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen for the squad to push for those goals, with some players and staff jobs under inspection.
However, there are new aims from an off-field perspective, with incoming CEO Omar Berrada being set the challenge of managing player wages.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at a player who’s cost the club millions despite barely stepping foot on the pitch.
Tom Heaton’s salary
Tom Heaton joined Man United from Aston Villa on a free transfer after the end of the 2020/21 season, with the experienced shot-stopper signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a backup to David De Gea and Dean Henderson.
The England keeper was third choice in between the sticks, and seeing as the position is hardly rotated, his involvement over the years has been far from frequent.
According to Capology, the "outstanding" Heaton, as per creator Liam canning," is currently earning 45k-per-week, which is £5k less than Alejandro Garnacho and just over four times more than young Kobbie Mainoo.
This means that the 37-year-old will have cost the club around £7m in wages over his three year contract, which is set to expire this summer.
Ten Hag must now ruthlessly bench McTominay for Man Utd's "monster"
Scott McTominay struggled at times against Nottingham Forest.
ByTom Lever Feb 29, 2024 What Heaton earns compared to other PL back-up goalkeepers
De Gea had been the number one keeper at Old Trafford for the past decade, but in the summer, United decided to let the Spaniard leave on a free, as Erik ten Hag looked to complete an overhaul of the department.
Due to the exit of De Gea and Henderson moving to Crystal Palace, Heaton enjoyed his best spell in a United shirt, playing four games in pre-season and even captaining the side against Athletic Club.
However, the Dutch boss brought in last season’s Champions League runner-up, Andre Onana, to be the new number one while also signing Altay Bayindir to be his backup, which has meant Heaton hasn't been seen on the pitch since.
The veteran's lack of involvement this season has kept his total competitive appearances to three since 2021, making only two starts, both in the EFL Cup last season. This equates to over £2m earned per appearance and approximately £3.5m per start.

As can be seen in the table above, when compared to other second-choice keepers in the Premier League – bearing in mind that Heaton is third-choice – he is far from the highest earner, but he’s also not exactly the lowest either.
Furthermore, the likes of Ortega, Kelleher, and Petrovic all play important roles for their team, with them featuring in nine, 17, and 17 games, respectively. Even Bayindir earns less than Heaton, which could be looked at as a positive due to the fact that United seem to be working on reducing player wages, which is certainly a step forward.
Wage Burners
Football FanCast's Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.
Overall, Heaton hasn’t really offered much to warrant a £45k-per-week contract, but in fairness, he’s not really been handed an opportunity to prove his worth.
