Newcastle United reportedly have the "financial resources" at their disposal to complete the signing of a "great player" this summer, with the individual in question a wanted man.

The Magpies will want to enjoy a significant summer in the transfer market, having gone backwards this season after their superb 2022/23 campaign. Granted, Eddie Howe still has an excellent squad when everyone is fit and firing, but too many players are injury-prone, and bringing some new blood will add a freshness to the group.

Sven Botman's long-term ACL injury means centre-back targets could be at the forefront of PIF's thinking at the end of the campaign, with Sporting CP duo Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande both once again linked with moves to St James' Park in a recent report.

Hugely exciting young RB Leipzig and Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko has also been seen as an option for the Magpies this summer, possibly coming in as Callum Wilson's replacement should he depart in the coming months. The Englishman's current deal expires next year, meaning 2024 is Newcastle's last chance to realistically receive a fair amount of money for his services.

Elsewhere, Shakhtar Donetsk maestro Georgiy Sudakov is another target for the Premier League giants, having already registered 29 goal contributions (15 goals and 14 assists) in 91 appearances for his current side at the age of just 21.

Newcastle want to sign "great player"

Now, a fresh transfer rumour has emerged, with Tutto Juve [via Sport Witness] reporting that Newcastle are still interested in signing Dean Huijsen this summer, and have the "financial resources" to snap up the highly rated Juventus centre-back.

However, the report does stress that the 18-year-old has "many admirers abroad", so there could be a big battle to acquire his signature when the summer arrives; and in any case, Juve see him as a prized asset they are reluctant to let leave at any point in the near future.

Huijsen is a player with a frightening amount of potential, so the idea of Newcastle signing him over others this summer is a mouthwatering prospect for the supporters.

Assuming Botman makes a full recovery from his huge ACL setback, the Magpies need to look at signing a young long-term partner for the Dutchman at the back; with Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles both in their 30s, the Juve ace would represent a great option. Manager Massimiliano Allegri is under no illusions as to how impressive Huijsen is as a player, praising him after his debut earlier in the season and comparing him to a former defensive great at the club:

"Huijsen entered the game serene and calm, he never played complicated passes and never put his teammate in difficulty. He reads the game like a great player. He does things like Ciro Ferrara.

“Dean worked with the tranquility and serenity of a thirty-year-old."

Whether Juve allow Huijsen to move on this summer is certainly up for debate, but the fact that Newcastle are in the race to sign him says so much about the progress made by the club, even if this season has been a disappointment.

O segundo tempo começou em um rimo bem diferente. Pior para o Santos.

Com menos de um minuto, Pará foi tirar a bola para o ataque e espirrou o taco. Rossi aproveitou na direita e cruzou para a área, Thaciano pegou de primeira e abriu o placar.

Dois minutos depois, o time da casa ampliou. Rossi recebeu na direita, passou como quis pelo zagueiro Luan Peres e cruzou, Thaciano pegou de primeira e fez o segundo.

Não demorou e saiu o terceiro. Após escanteio da esquerda, Rane Guedes cruzou, a defesa do Santos tentou fazer linha de impedimento, mas Felipe Jonatan deu condição e Juninho cabeceou para o gol. O VAR chegou a analisar o lance, mas depois de poucos minutos confirmou o gol.

Nottingham Forest failed to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League after falling to a 3-1 defeat away at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.

The Reds fell behind after an own goal from Brazilian centre-back Murillo before Chris Wood made it four goals in as many games with a brilliant instinctive finish after great work from Anthony Elanga and Neco Williams down the right-hand side.

However, crushing strikes from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro secured three points for Ange Postecoglou's side, with Forest still lingering dangerously close to the relegation zone – the club only above Luton Town on goal difference with six games to go.

The game in north London was a good opportunity for Nuno Espírito Santo's side to re-establish their gap above the drop zone, but they failed to do so, with one player in particular having a disappointing game.

Ryan Yates' stats against Tottenham

After an unchanged side from the victory over Fulham last Tuesday, midfielder Ryan Yates took the armband and led the Reds out looking to claim all three points.

Undoubtedly, the midfielder plays with his heart on his sleeve and is committed to succeeding for his boyhood club, but today was another example that the 26-year-old isn't technically up to the demands of the Premier League.

He was given a rating of 5.5/10 by Nottinghamshire Live Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson, with the midfielder failing to get a hold of the in the middle of the park.

Forest play again in less than seven days and Nuno should look to replace Yates with another member of the Reds squad who looked more suited to his system after coming off the bench during the weekend's defeat.

The Reds have some excellent options in the middle of midfield, with Nicolas Dominguez more than deserving of another run in the starting lineup.

The Argentinian came on in the 68th minute and completed all 15 of the passes he attempted, whilst winning 100% of the duels he contested after coming on.

Dominguez was also a threat as the Reds tried to claw back the two-goal deficit, the 25-year-old also managing to get a shot on target with the former Bologna man a nuisance at both ends after his introduction.

He was harshly dropped after the Brighton defeat, with the Argentinian coming off the bench in the last four games. Dominguez did have a solid partnership alongside Brazilian Danilo, meaning Nuno needs to play the duo together against Wolves at the City Ground on Saturday afternoon.

Europe's elite club competition attracts the biggest names and offers a chance to win the biggest prize, and should Spurs succeed in securing a place, they would take a big step in their pursuit of a new centre-forward.

While Tottenham have been linked with a wealth of names for the front of the ship following Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich last summer, the latest rumour might be the most exciting yet.

According to The Sun, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to go head-to-head with London rivals Arsenal for Newcastle United star Alexander Isak this summer, with the Swede touted at £100m by his outfit.

Isak is a treasure in Tyneside but the Magpies might be forced to give up their glinted silver to comply with financial fair play rules, especially if they fail to qualify for Europe – United are currently eighth, one point behind the Hammers.

Newcastle made Isak their club-record signing in August 2022 after making remarkable progress under Eddie Howe's stewardship, welcoming the striker from Real Sociedad for £63m.

The 24-year-old showed plenty of promise throughout his maiden campaign in England but found injuries inhibited him from hitting full bloom. Still, he scored ten goals and added two assists from just 17 starting appearances in the Premier League last season.

Standing at 6 foot 3, Isak is a rangy and athletic centre-forward with a fleet-footedness that sets him apart from the lion's share of strikers throughout Europe. He has been hailed for his "fearless" performances at St. James' Park by The Times' Henry Winter.

This season, as per Sofascore, Isak has posted 15 goals from just 19 starts in the English top flight, 13 of which have come with his deadly right foot.

If the Lilywhites crave a prolific new frontman to spearhead a promising new era, on the market (if rather expensive), then look no further. Isak is the man Tottenham must invest resources into signing, over the likes of Ivan Toney, brilliant as he may be.

How Isak compares to Ivan Toney

The gnawing inconsistency that has marred many interminable silverware-pursuing seasons really feels like it might come to an end under Postecoglou's leadership, with the recruitment thus far landing the right stars to flavour the brewing success.

Toney is a fine centre-forward, having scored 24 goals and provided five assists from 44 Premier League matches since the start of last season, even praised for his dynamic qualities by Three Lions teammate Declan Rice, who said he's "like Harry Kane."

Tottenham are said to be "lurking in the background" for the 28-year-old by transfer reporter Dean Jones, though Manchester United and West Ham United appear to be current frontrunners.

Toney is clinical and helps his teammates immensely through his creativity, sharp intelligence and positive movements, but Isak arguably offers a better skill set as a pure striker, a natural finisher.

As the table shows above, Isak is actually performing at the most clinical rate of any top goalscorer in the Premier League this season, bagging at a superior rate even to top dogs Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.

Moreover, when taking his seasonal tally across all competitions into consideration – 19 goals from 32 matches – it can be observed that Isak has even outscored Heung-min Son this term, having matched his 15 Premier League goals at a superior rate. Son has not scored outside the top flight in 2023/24.

It's for this reason, the matter of Isak's staggering prolificness, Tottenham have been credited with an interest in Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez in recent months, with a report from Caught Offside in March even going as far as to claim that the Mexican is Postecoglou's top target.

That's not to say that Isak isn't a high-class, complete centre-forward, with the one-time Borussia Dortmund youngster ranking among the top 13% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and progressive carries, the top 12% for progressive passes and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.
