Arthur backs Lyon despite axe

Coach Mickey Arthur has said Australia’s axing of Nathan Lyon for another spinner for the first time in his Test career does not mean he has lost the confidence of the selectors.

Brydon Coverdale 03-Mar-2013Coach Mickey Arthur has said Australia’s axing of Nathan Lyon for another spinner for the first time in his Test career does not mean he has lost the confidence of the selectors.Lyon was left out of the Hyderabad Test after taking 4 for 244 in Chennai and instead the team relied on Xavier Doherty and Glenn Maxwell for its spin requirements, a plan that by the end of the second day had failed to bring a wicket as M Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara dominated proceedings. The only other time Lyon had been left out since making his debut in Sri Lanka in 2011 was against India at the WACA in January 2012, when four fast men were chosen on a bouncy pitch. Arthur said Lyon needed to work on some technical aspects of his game after the Chennai defeat and also had to regain his confidence after being battered by MS Dhoni during his remarkable double-century.”Nathan and I have spoken at length about the summer he’s had,” Arthur said. “Nathan is going to be a very good spin bowler bowler for Australia. It doesn’t mean we don’t back him anymore, we just think it was the right time after Chennai just to give him a little bit of a break. He had a couple of technical things that we wanted to work on a little bit away from the game but still being on tour, which we’ve done, and we are confident he will bounce back really strong.Mickey Arthur wanted Nathan Lyon to work on a couple of things away from the game•Getty Images

“We also felt he needed to come to terms with a couple of things and he’s done that. He was ill yesterday and didn’t come to the ground but he was here today and he’ll get his strength up. I don’t want to go into what we are working on. There are one or two technical things plus we want him to get a little bit of confidence back.”Arthur said the rationale behind choosing Doherty was that Australia wanted a spinner who could turn the ball away from India’s top six, all of whom are right-handers. Maxwell, he said, was chosen as a backup spinner who could also offer plenty with the bat and in the field. At stumps on the second day, Doherty had taken 0 for 85 and Maxwell had 0 for 55.”We thought the Indian middle-order played the offspin particularly well in Chennai,” Arthur said. “We wanted somebody who could turn it away as our primary resource, which gave Xavier an opportunity. I thought he went very well today, he toiled manfully. He went about three an over which was pretty decent. Xavier gave us what we know Xavier can.”Glenn was always going to be the other option. We felt that we would have another spinner and if we had another spinner, we wanted a guy who would bring more to the party. He was another allrounder, a guy that could bat eight and bat deep for us and give us something in the field. That’s what we want with Maxi primarily as the second spinner.”Arthur conceded that Maxwell had bowled “not very well today” but hoped he had learnt a lot from the experience of working against such good players of spin. Maxwell, Doherty, Lyon and the batting allrounder Steven Smith were the spin options in Australia’s squad, while the leading Sheffield Shield spinner this season, Steve O’Keefe, was overlooked. O’Keefe has 17 wickets at 26.76 this summer and took eight in a match just before the squad was picked.”Stephen O’Keefe has got a really good record,” Arthur said. “Xavier Doherty bowled outstandingly well for us in the one-day series against Sri Lanka. Michael Beer would have been here if he didn’t get injured. That caused us to reshuffle a little bit. We picked Xavier over Stephen primarily because we thought Xavier was bowling exceptionally well, which he was in the one-day series at that particular time.”Not that Australia’s dire situation after two days in Hyderabad was all down to the bowling. The batsmen let the team down severely on the first day by stumbling to 63 for 4 before Michael Clarke and Matthew Wade rescued them from embarrassment. Still, Australia’s 237 for 9 was already looking paltry a day later when India went to stumps at 311 for 1.”We had a pretty tough chat with our batsmen this morning because we thought they’d probably wasted a bit of an opportunity yesterday,” Arthur said. “I do think we should have got more in our first innings without a doubt.”

Burns earns draw to lighten Surrey gloom

Surrey awoke from the inexplicably ghastly nightmare of losing seven first-innings wickets for 12 runs in 11 overs to secure the draw that at least buys them a bit of breathing space

Surrey awoke from the inexplicably ghastly nightmare of losing seven first-innings wickets for 12 runs in 11 overs to secure the draw that at least buys them a bit of breathing space. But with only Derbyshire below them and the halfway stage of the Championship programme almost reached, it is hard to predict anything other than a fight against relegation.Signings continue to be made. Australia’s Glenn Maxwell will arrive for at least part of the T20 programme while Surrey expect to confirm the capture of South Africa’s JP Duminy for the last two months of the four-day campaign early next week. What they need above all else, though, is a Championship victory after seven matches without success. That spirit-lifting outcome was an impossibility here once Warwickshire ploughed on beyond 600. And but for a more disciplined second-innings effort, built around Rory Burns’ three-hour occupation, a desperately embarrassing defeat might have ensued. As it was, the pitch proved simply too bland for Warwickshire to pressurise Surrey into another implosion. The defending champions were further hampered by the absence of fast bowler Chris Wright, who sat out the final day with a flu-like illness, and they could also point to the potentially crucial loss of 37 overs to rain on the third morning. But unlike Surrey, who were left thanking the heavens for small mercies, the visitors can rightly claim to have taken a good step forward at Woodbridge Road. Their injury list is starting to shorten, with opener Ian Westwood and allrounder Keith Barker not only returning to action here but also making excellent contributions.Even better, Warwickshire have produced just the batting response coach Dougie Brown wanted after they were routed for 128 and 140, by Yorkshire, on their last outing. Retaining the title looks a tall order right now (they have only one victory from seven matches, compared to four at the same stage last season) but it is not an impossible task by any means. The Bears were growling all right this morning, having stunned Surrey through the previous evening’s Boyd Rankin-inspired burst. And it took them less than half an hour to claim the final three wickets, which left the hosts to follow-on an almighty 357 behind.Chris Tremlett, defending tentatively on the crease, edged Rankin before Ricky Ponting – deciding he might as well go on the offensive – and Jade Dernbach perished to Barker’s left-arm quicks. On a pitch which had yielded 863 runs for the first 11 wickets, Surrey’s last seven had gone down for an undistinguished dozen. No wonder their followers were less than happy and no doubt wishing that next month’s forum could be brought forward a few weeks. At least there was a bit of cheer for the faithful second time around. With nothing more than slow turn to encourage spinners Jeetan Patel and Ateeq Javid, Warwickshire could only prod and probe for weaknesses during lengthy spells. It was Rikki Clarke, though, who denied opener Burns what would have been a worthy century, finding the outside edge with a real ‘effort’ ball just before tea. And when Patel claimed a second victim during the early stages of the final session, via Zander de Bruyn’s bat-pad catch to silly point, the visitors rightly extended their victory bid well into the final hour. There was no shifting Ponting a second time, however, and he at least is earning his corn.As for that elusive first win, Surrey’s director of cricket, Chris Adams, insisted: “We’ve competed in every game without managing to pull it together with both bat and ball for an entire four days. But I don’t think we are far away. I feel we are really close to bringing it together and putting in that performance.”

Gustavo Scarpa mostra versatilidade e começa 2019 em alta no Palmeiras

MatériaMais Notícias

Apenas três jogadores começaram jogando as duas partidas do Palmeiras neste Paulista: Thiago Santos, Dudu e Gustavo Scarpa.

Bangladesh's chance to surprise new-look Sri Lanka

Preview of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Galle

Big PictureA Test match in Galle against Bangladesh might usually comprise a straightforward challenge for Sri Lanka, but with the contracts crisis less than a week behind them and a fresh-faced top order set to take guard, the potential for an upset has shot up. Sri Lanka’s selectors have approached the tour as an opportunity to blood young players, tilting the squad balance heavily towards raw talent, and if an improving Bangladesh side score a shock victory, Angelo Mathews’ Test captaincy will have had as poor a start as he could have imagined. On paper, Sri Lanka are by some distance the favourites in Galle – a venue from which they have customarily taken a 1-0 lead into the remainder of the series, having lost only three times in 21 matches there. The pitch, which usually takes turn from day one, shapes as a paradise for all spinners, but even men as gifted as Saeed Ajmal and Graeme Swann have not managed to imitate the success Sri Lanka’s slow bowlers achieve there as a matter of routine. It will help too for Sri Lanka that several batsmen in the likely top seven have scored heavily in first-class engagements since the tour of Australia. Angelo Mathews and Tillakaratne Dilshan both made big hundreds in their last match, while Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne have also strung together solid scores in the past few weeks. Either Jeevan Mendis or Kithuruwan Vithanage are likely to debut, and both men are also coming off big scores – in Vithanage’s case, against the very attack the visitors will probably field in the first Test.Bangladesh are also with several key players, but the ones on tour are a different breed than the cricketers who have visited Sri Lanka in the last four full tours. Bangladesh now gives their youngsters time on the domestic circuit before drafting them into the senior side. Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque are the latest talents to roll out of age-group and domestic cricket, with Jahurul Islam and Marshall Ayub being picked on their recent form.Captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal will have to do most of the running, but the likes of Mahmudullah and Nasir Hossain have soaked up pressure in the recent past. Bangladesh’s bowling attack however is thin, and the gap left by the injured Shakib Al Hasan will take some filling. Someone has to fill his role as the wicket-taker and then run-controller, but none of these bowlers have done so on the big stage for an extended period.Sri Lanka’s off field problems may have closed the gap between the teams somewhat, at least psychologically, but those who have seen Bangladesh capitulate in a matter of overs in Test cricket would still be wary of a one-sided contest. But this is a young team with several cricketers who seek the limelight; their desire would have to be translated on to the field for this to be a good Test match.Form guideSri Lanka: LLLLW (Completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh: LLLLL
Players to watchAngelo Mathews was by no means an automatic choice for Test captain, despite having been groomed for the role for the better part of two years, and he has plenty to prove in this Test and the series. He has a passable average of 39.71 for a No.6, but he’s made only one hundred in 50 innings, and his bowling figures in the longest format are far worse than Dilshan’s, who himself would not be termed an allrounder. Mathews has also rarely been seen offering tactical counsel for past captains, and in addition to his ability to re-energise the side after the weekend’s disruptive events, his strategic nous will also be on trial.Sohag Gazi is going to be Mushfiqur Rahim’s go-to bowler in spinning conditions, particularly in Shakib’s absence. The offspinner has greatly improved, going from playing first-class cricket for Barisal Division to becoming the leading spinner in his first away Test. A self-made cricketer, Gazi’s breed of offspin isn’t different from the orthodox lot but since making the senior team earlier this season, he has added a few more variations to his armoury.Team newsWith Mahela Jayawardene out through injury and Thilan Samaraweera not picked – and subsequently retired – Sri Lanka will have to pick at least four batsmen with fewer than ten Tests’ experience, as it is unlikely they will play five bowlers. Kithuruwan Vithanage, who scored an unbeaten 168 in the tour match could be in line for a debut, but Jeevan Mendis has an equally good chance, as he can provide an extra bowling option. The second spinner’s spot is also up for grabs, and uncapped 19-year-old Tharindu Kaushal may also be looking at a debut, though he will have to fight off Ajantha Mendis, who is the more likely candidate. With so much inexperience elsewhere, Sri Lanka may choose the more seasoned hand of Nuwan Kulasekara over Shaminda Eranga.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Kithuruwan Vithanage, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 8 Nuwan Kulasekara/Shaminda Eranga 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Ajantha Mendis/Tharindu Kaushal, 11 Chanaka WelegedaraTo fill the four vacant slots in the batting line-up, Bangladesh are likely to give Mominul a Test debut at No. 6. Mohammad Ashraful will come in too, but there is still uncertainty about Jahurul Islam and Anamul Haque to open with Tamim Iqbal, who could play through pain in his right hand. Rubel Hossain has pain in his back so he too could be replaced by Shahadat Hossain. Or as a safety-first option, they could go with Elias Sunny, making it a completely spin-based attack.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Jahurul Islam/Anamul Haque, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Mominul Haque, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Sohag Gazi, 9 Elias Sunny, 10 Abul Hasan, 11 Rubel Hossain/Shahadat HossainStats and trivia Bangladesh have lost all eight Tests they played in Sri Lanka, and have never taken a match into the fifth day Kumar Sangakkara scored back-to-back double hundreds on Bangladesh’s last tour to Sri Lanka, and averaged 428 in the series In three Tests in Galle last year, Rangana Herath took 28 wickets at 14.28 This is the first Test Mahela Jayawardene will miss since July 2002 Mohammad Ashraful is by far Bangladesh’s most successful Test batsman in Sri Lanka, scoring two hundreds including the one on debut that set the world record for the youngest batsman to score a century on debutQuotes”I think there is no added pressure as such. We have played without Shakib for parts of the series against West Indies, so nothing much has changed. I think a bit of pressure can be a good thing, and I am confident we, as a team, can handle it.”
“Mahela and Thilan are two of our most experience players, so we will miss them. Bangladesh is a very good team, and they’ve played well in the recent past, so this is an opportunity for all of us to [prove ourselves and] come through with a win. I’m sure we can be successful.”

Warner reprimanded for showing dissent

David Warner, the Australia batsman, has received an official reprimand after pleading guilty to a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Sydney ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jan-2013David Warner, the Australia batsman, has received an official reprimand after pleading guilty to a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Sydney ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday.Warner had stood his ground after being given out lbw in the 29th over, before eventually leaving while shaking his head. Replays showed Warner had got an inside edge to a Thisara Perera delivery before it struck him on the pad. The lone review available to Australia had already been used unsuccessfully by Michael Clarke earlier.Warner was found to have breached Article 2.1.3 of the Code which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match”.Warner admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, Javagal Srinath, and there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge had been laid by the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Richard Kettleborough and fourth umpire John Ward.

Hooper in the mix for Bangladesh coaching role

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has accelerated its hunt for the next head coach even before the January 25 deadline for receiving applications, with the former West Indies captain Carl Hooper in the mix

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has accelerated its hunt for the next head coach even before the January 25 deadline for receiving applications, with the former West Indies captain Carl Hooper in the mix. The BCB is looking to fill the position before the tour of Sri Lanka in March.”We have sent out an advertisement seeking a coach and that (deadline) ends on January 25, but we are also looking elsewhere,” Jalal Yunus, the BCB media committee chairman, told ESPNcricinfo. “We know that Carl Hooper is interested in taking the job.”After retiring from international cricket in 2003, Hooper hasn’t had a major international coaching job. Two years ago, he was the batting coach of the Sagicor High Performance Centre in Barbados. The former Australia fast bowler Craig McDermott is also vying for the position. “Mark Greatbatch (former New Zealand batsman), who had applied when we last looked for a coach, is still interested, as is Craig McDermott,” Yunus said.McDermott is currently Ireland’s bowling coach and was understood to have been shortlisted for the role of Somerset coach that was eventually taken by Dave Nosworthy. McDermott had also served as Australia’s bowling coach before quitting last May. ESPNcricinfo understands that Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, remains interested in an international coaching position if the terms are appropriate. He had earlier pulled out of the race after initially showing interest when Bangladesh was looking to replace Stuart Law last year.Following Richard Pybus’ resignation in October, Shane Jurgensen, the bowling coach, took over as the interim coach during the home series against West Indies, Bangladesh’s last international assignment. Yunus said that if the BCB cannot find a suitable replacement ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, they will ask Jurgensen to continue.
