The Hobart Hurricanes are probably the most unassuming and underrated side in the Big Bash League, but they are fast becoming the team to beat after another polished all-round display to dispose of the Sydney Sixers by 42 runs.They may lack the big-name star-power but they make up for it with a well-balanced team that executes a tried and tested Twenty20 formula. It is no surprise that they have won two of two.Just like in Perth on Sunday, Xavier Doherty won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good surface at the Bellerive Oval. Eyebrows were raised around the ground as they rolled to the half-way point of their innings at a pedestrian six-an-over.But, just as in Perth, the plan was to leave wickets in hand for a second half assault. At 1 for 63 after 10 overs, having lost only Jonathan Wells to the effective part-time spin of Dom Thornely, the scene was set for Phil Jaques and Travis Birt. In the eleventh over they let fly; Dwayne Bravo conceded 20 runs. Birt smashed two fours and a six before Jaques cut the last ball for four.Brett Lee and Stuart MacGill curtailed the pair to just 11 runs from the next 12 balls but unlike Perth when panic sparked a collapse of 8 for 39, the pair of left-handers kept their powder dry before targeting Moises Henriques. Five fours and a six were dispatched in two overs the Sixers all-rounder will quickly forget. Birt and Jaques both rocketed past 50 in the process.Their 107-run stand was broken Mitchell Starc, as he managed to snare Birt for 65 (from 41 balls) with a clever slower bouncer, but the damage was done. Starc also claimed Jaques for 73 with the third ball of the 20th over, but only after Jaques had steered him to fine leg for four and hit him over midwicket for 98-metre six.The Hurricanes defended 140 with ease against Perth, so 3 for 169 was a luxury total. Again, they opened with a mix of off-spin from Jason Krejza and out-swing from Ben Hilfenhaus. Again, it worked perfectly as they each knocked a batsman over with the score on seven – Peter Nevill missed an innocuous straight delivery from Hilfenhaus, Michael Lumb did the same off the very next ball from Krejza.Stand-in Sixers captain Steve Smith and 20-year-old Nic Maddinson steadied the ship with a 57-run partnership. They rode their luck but also played some attractive strokes. They took four boundaries from Hilfenhaus’ third over. Maddinson showed his immense talent, hitting two of those fours off consecutive deliveries to the cover fence – one over the top, the other along the ground.But again the Hurricanes stuck to their formula and came up trumps. Spin was ordered in from both ends at the halfway mark, and Doherty and Krejza removed Smith and Maddinson in back-to-back overs to regain control.Then, the local cult-hero Rana Naved-ul-Hasan entered to bowl at the death. He took 4 for 6 in 11 balls to close out the contest. This is something Tasmanian fans have become accustomed to since he signed up as their star import three seasons ago. Three of Rana’s wickets were bowled and he nearly managed his second hat-trick in Australia.Birt was named Man-of-the-Match but, in reality, the sum of all parts was greater than any one contribution for the Hurricanes. The opposite could be said for the Sixers. Only three of their players reached double-figures with the bat, and they managed just three wickets with the ball despite eight of their XI having represented their country.

– A criação da vice-presidência de assuntos institucionais;
– A locação de dois imóveis do clube;
– A cessão de uma sala no Estádio Nilton Santos;
– A operação de crédito para a antecipação de receitas;

Kohli and Rohit overpower West Indies

Virat Kohli’s methodical century and Rohit Sharma’s efficient finishing act led India to a 2-0 lead on a drizzly day in Visakhapatnam

The Report by George Binoy02-Dec-2011

Lendl Simmons withstood like the boy on the burning deck, while Ravi Rampaul shot from the hip like the last man standing. Their half-centuries were stirring for they created them from ruins, but neither led West Indies to victory. Instead, Virat Kohli’s methodical century, which enhanced his growing stature as an expert of the chase, and Rohit Sharma’s efficient finishing act, prevailed and led India to a 2-0 lead on a drizzly day in Visakhapatnam.India’s bowlers had a critical role in the victory as well, before they were rendered bereft of ideas by Rampaul’s record-breaking assault at No. 10. Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar, the new-ball operators, exploited rare seam-bowling conditions on the subcontinent and cut through the West Indian top order. Under cloudy skies, on a cracked pitch that had bounce, they used consistent outswing to help reduce West Indies to 149 for 8 despite defiance from Simmons. The end should have quickly followed, but it didn’t, because Rampaul blitzed 86 off 66 balls and added 99 for the tenth wicket to lead West Indies to 269 for 9.The chase was not hiccup-free either. India suffered two early wickets and the loss of an off-colour Sehwag – whose 26 lacked enough strike and momentum – to slip to 84 for 3 in the 17th over. Sehwag could have fallen on 1 and 15 but was dropped by Darren Sammy and Darren Bravo, who is as poor a fielder as he is promising a batsman.The moments that cost West Indies most, however, were the let-offs Kohli had. On 24, Kohli swiveled and tried to pull Andre Russell, a shot he would execute with success later during his eighth century. This time Denesh Ramdin failed to catch the ball and the umpire did not signal leg-byes. On 40, Kohli drove the ball hard back at the bowler Marlon Samuels, who couldn’t hold on as he dived to his right. Kohli gave West Indies no more chances.Rohit had a painful start to his innings. His third ball was a short one from Rampaul and it thudded into the glove of his bottom hand. Three balls later Rohit retorted with a audacious pull off the front foot that sent the ball into the crowd beyond the midwicket boundary. It was the start of a 163-run partnership that decided the game.Though the challenge was sizeable, Kohli and Rohit ensured the asking-rate, which hit a run a ball for the first time after 23 overs, was always under control. Sammy, unlike his counterpart Sehwag who often had six fielders in the circle when India were bowling, spread his field and the batsmen were able to whittle down the target without risking their wickets.There were a few more tense moments as the contest entered its home stretch. After closing the gap between runs required and balls left with five boundaries in ten balls – Kohli 3, Rohit 2 – Kohli was dismissed for 117. Raina was caught behind hooking a short ball soon after, and India needed 22 off 24 balls. Rohit, however, did the job he didn’t do in Cuttack. He stayed the course, striking a six over long-off to reach 90 and then watching from the other end as the game was won.A few hours earlier, the match didn’t look like it would go into its 99th over. The floodlights were on as play began after a delayed start in front of a strong crowd and Yadav didn’t take long to give them reason to roar. In the second over, he produced a late outswinger that grazed Adrian Barath’s outside edge en route to the wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.A feature of Yadav’s bowling was how upright the seam was before the ball hit the pitch and seamed away. Sehwag had a third slip because of all the movement, and when Samuels edged Yadav, Raina dived to his right and took a low catch. West Indies were 25 for 2.Simmons went on the attack, stylishly whipping Yadav to the square-leg boundary, and walking out of his crease to drive Vinay on the up through extra cover to bring up 1000 career runs. At the other end, there was false promise from Bravo, who flicked and straight drove Varun Aaron for fours before lofting Vinay to the fielder at mid-on. Two balls later, Danza Hyatt was walking back for nought.Only after Ramdin – Yadav’s third wicket – departed with his team reeling at 63 for 5, did things begin to look up for West Indies. Simmons reached his half-century and Pollard brought up the 50 partnership by launching the offspinner R Ashwin over the straight boundary. He followed that with another six over wide long-on next ball. Another slump was around the corner, though.Pollard, Sammy and Russell fell in quick time and it was then that Rampaul made his entrance. He swept Ashwin for four and clubbed him over long-on, before targeting Jadeja and scoring two more fours. Between those braces of shots, Simmons had been run out for 78.The boundaries were small but Rampaul would have cleared larger ones today. He brought up his half-century off 35 balls and hit half a dozen sixes and as many fours, most of them swung with power on the leg side. There was an inevitability about how the innings ended, with Rampaul slamming Aaron over the straight boundary. He walked off the field with a composed look on his face, knowing the job was only half done. He wouldn’t be able to complete it, though.

Richardson maiden hundred stalls Yorkshire

Michael Richardson scored his maiden first-class hundred as Durham piled up 573 to bat Division One leaders Yorkshire into a tight spot

Advertising your failings seems to be all the rage in Scarborough. A few miles from the town centre there is a banner proclaiming: “Lodges for hire, no hot tubs.” Proudly flaunting what you don’t have must be a peculiarly Yorkshire phenomenon.Negative advertising would surely have been Yorkshire’s best refuge as the crowd trailed out after Durham made 573 and Michael Richardson produced an entirely unflustered maiden Championship hundred batting: a specialist batsman and wickekeeper in waiting who regularly appears for Durham at No 8.Banners outside North Marine Road stating: “Nothing’s meant to come easy” or “It’s tough up north” would at least have helped to create the impression that it was all part of the grand design, and nothing at all to worry about, as Yorkshire’s bowlers, with the exception of the exemplary Ryan Sidebottom, foundered on a decent batting surface.Yorkshire’s charge to the title, for the time being at least, has stalled. Richardson, son of David Richardson, the ICC chief executive former South Africa wicketkeeper, guided Durham from an overnight 406 for 6, which had been galling enough, to the sort of total which barring something extraordinary has batted Yorkshire out of the game. They still need another 242 with seven wickets left to avoid the follow-on.It was not what most of a crowd of 6000 had come to see and they streamed out early, many heading back to dinner at their seaside guest houses, with troubled expressions. It could only get worse if they were offered a Lebanese starter.Yorkshire, 25.5 points ahead of Durham, who have a game in hand, must steel themselves for the likelihood that they will have to try to spend the last two days batting out time. In the New Zealander Kane Williamson, a late-season overseas acquisition, they have a batsman attuned to such a task, and he remained unbeaten on 76 at the end of the second day. Yorkshire will hope he wins a match during his short stay, but for the moment he can help draw one.Whatever occurs, a Yorkshire recovery or gradual subsiding to defeat, Saturday is unlikely to be too appealing for home supporters. Scarborough is hosting a cycling festival this weekend ahead of the prologue of the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire next summer and it might be a tempting alternative after two days in which Yorkshire’s bowlers might have been climbing Buttertubs Pass.Durham extended their first innings into the afternoon as Richardson neared his century and, although it was logical enough, tactically, spectators on the popular bank became increasingly agitated. He was 77 when he was joined by the last man, Chris Rushworth. Less than five overs later he had his hundred.”Game’s going nowhere, do they want to win or not?” asked one observer to his mate, as Richardson was actually advancing the game at quite a rate. He had already added 86 in 22 overs with Jamie Harrison for the ninth wicket and the follow-on figure was getting more daunting by the minute. Finally, he sallied down the pitch to Williamson’s offspin and hoisted him over long on for a second six – with a foot or two to spare – to reach his hundred. He was last out two balls later, skying Williamson into the leg side.”I wanted to take it out of Rushy’s hands as much as I could,” he said. “I thought I would make it my responsibility and take a few risks rather than just ticking over the strike. I was watching that last six just creep over the fielder’s head. The relief was quite evident because I have been waiting a while to get that hundred.”It could have been worse for Yorkshire. If Paul Collingwood, 74 not out overnight, had joined Mark Stoneman, Ben Stokes and Richardson in reaching 100, it would have been the first time in Yorkshire’s history that they had conceded four hundreds in a Championship innings. They were doubly grateful therefore for Sidebottom’s upheld lbw appeal after Collingwood had added only seven to his overnight score.Yorkshire’s reply, as stoutly as Williamson played, never possessed the same sense of security. Adam Lyth, preferred to Alex Lees, fell in the slip cordon during Rushworth’s new ball spell and Harrison had Andrew Gale lbw after tea. But the instructional comparison was between Adil Rashid, who delivered his leg spin in such a routine manner he might have been stacking supermarket shelves, and his fellow legspinner Scott Borthwick.In such a warm, dry summer, neither has made the impact they might have hoped for – Rashid has 25 wickets at 41.84, Borthwick 20 at 37.40 – and both have enhanced their reputation by achievements with the bat. But Borthwick bowled with more vigour and, if he dragged down short balls now and then, he did seem to be trying to spin the ball. It was this energy which had Phil Jaques caught at short leg in his first over. Durham’s close fielders felt in the game, and in his 25 overs Rashid never achieved that.

Liverpool fans react to Xherdan Shaqiri’s fitness update

Liverpool are on the edge of glory, it seems.

The Reds beat Manchester United on Sunday 2-0 and, in doing so, they took their lead at the top of the table to a huge 16 points. After just 22 matches – they have a game in hand on their title “rivals” – they appear to have the title all but sewn up. It is surely only a matter of time before they are officially crowned as champions.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

They were without a number of players this weekend, with the likes of James Milner, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri all unavailable. The latter found himself once again on the sidelines after picking up an injury prior to the clash, but a fitness update says that he will be in contention quickly.

Some supporters are happy with the news that he will not be out for too long.

With a busy end of the campaign coming up, Jurgen Klopp will surely want the Switzerland international to return as soon as possible.

One fan, meanwhile, compared him to a former Liverpool man who had plenty of issues with injuries.

The supporters should hope that this is not the case – the 30-year-old missed 99 games during his time with Liverpool due to a series of injuries.

One fan, meanwhile, felt sympathy for Shaqiri.

It certainly must be difficult to spend time on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to AS Roma during this January transfer window. It seems that a lot fans have been contemplating him moving on, although they have differing degrees of compassion for the former Stoke City man.

Given that he played a part in Liverpool’s Champions League victory last season – he provided an assist in the semi-final victory against Barcelona, a match which he started –  perhaps some could show him a little more respect.

James Tomlinson finished with figures of 5 for 44 to guide Hampshire totheir second County Championship win of the season as they beatGlamorgan by 43 runs in a close-fought game in Cardiff.After leaving Glamorgan 215 to win in 90 overs, Tomlinson claimed the first fourwickets to fall as the home side subsided to 58 for 5. Although Murray Goodwin and Mark Wallace put on 80 for the sixth wicket the damage had been done.At the start of the day Marcus North completed his five-wicket haul asGlamorgan wrapped up the Hampshire innings in the space of 22 balls. Hampshire were only able to add six more runs to their overnight total of 173for nine before Danny Briggs gave a bat-pad catch to Gareth Rees at short-leg. That gave North only his third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket givinghim figures of 5 for 30 from 15.1 overs.Glamorgan made a dreadful start to their victory quest being reduced to 42 for3 inside 10 overs by Tomlinson. He had Ben Wright and Stewart Walters both caught in the slips by LiamDawson and Sean Ervine respectively. And Tomlinson claimed his third wicket to have first innings century-maker Reescaught at second slip.Left-armer Tomlinson made it four straight victims when he trapped North lbw asthe home side slipped to 55 for four. Before lunch David Balcombe chipped in with the fifth wicket when Jim Allenby edged to Dawson at slip.But either side of lunch Goodwin and Wallace launched their impressiverecovery, steering them from 64 for 5 at the break, still 157 runs adrift of their victorytarget.Glamorgan were looking comfortable until Wallace was trapped leg beforehalf-forward to give Tomlinson his fifth wicket to leave the hosts 138for six at tea. At that stage Glamorgan needed 83 to win from 35.3 overs with Goodwin stillthere on 38 not out.Though Goodwin lost Dean Cosker to a leg-side stumping off Danny Briggs he wentto his 50 from 156 balls with six fours despite being rapped on the thumb byTomlinson when he was 39.Michael Hogan made a breezy 18, including 11 off a Briggs over, before he wascaught trying to clear Neil McKenzie at mid-off off Sohail Tanvir. It leftGlamorgan on 172 – needing a further 49 to win.And an over later Will Owen played on to Briggs making it 177 for 9, whileMike Reed lasted only two balls as Hampshire wrapped up the win with 22 oversremaining.
