Liverpool eyeing Christian Eriksen

Liverpool want to sign Denmark international and Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen this summer.

What’s the story?

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are one of three possible clubs Eriksen could end up at next season with the other two being a return to either Ajax or Tottenham Hotspur.

Many were surprised when he came back to the Premier League with Brentford in January, but he is shown he is still capable of producing top performances which have attracted interest from big clubs.

He’s rated at £13.5m with his contract expiring at the end of the season. The Bees will be keen to renew, but better options could be on the table for Eriksen.

Liverpool supporters will be buzzing

Whatever you think about the club’s he has previously played for, most people are admirers of Eriksen. So Liverpool fans will be buzzing about the prospect of him moving to Merseyside.

His story over the last 12 months is remarkable. From winning the Scudetto with Inter Milan to hopes of lifting the European Championships with his country. Everyone stood still when he collapsed on the field during the Euros after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Thankfully he was saved and has made an incredible recovery since. Naturally there were question marks over whether he would be able to replicate his form previously shown.

However, in just six appearances for Brentford since arriving Eriksen has been directly involved in three goals, and in games where he’s played a full 90 minutes the Bees have a 100% record.

The 30-year-old has shown that he still has a lot to offer and has been described as still “world class”.

So it’s not surprising that bigger clubs in Europe are interested in him, and if he’s available on a free transfer it’s likely he’ll receive some big offers.

With all three clubs mentioned in the report there’s a possibility of playing Champions League football. A return to Spurs would see Eriksen reunited with Antonio Conte who he played under at Inter.

However we think Liverpool is the most attractive option, it comes with the chance to work with Jurgen Klopp and compete for every trophy available. He’s never won the Champions League and with Liverpool it would be his best opportunity.

It’s a transfer that would suit both parties with Eriksen adding some exceptional quality to the growing depth of Klopp’s side. The man with 110 senior career goals to his name could be a shrewd addition at Anfield.

Everton eye Wolves winger Traore

Everton are reportedly now targeting a move for Adama Traore in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Future uncertain

Traore was sent out on loan to FC Barcelona from Wolves back in January, and so his future at Molineux is uncertain with neither Barca or Wolves seeming particularly keen to keep him long term.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

His contract at the Midlands club expires in 2023, and so it will be up to them whether they look to cash in on him in the summer or risk losing him for free the following year.

The Latest: Targeted

As per Football Insider, a source from Goodison Park has revealed that the Merseyside club are now monitoring Traore as an ‘attacking target’, and Kevin Thelwell is thought to be a ‘big admirer’ of his, having originally signed him for the Wanderers for a club-record fee back in 2018.

The Toffees are ‘keeping tabs’ on his situation, as Barcelona have an option to buy him in the summer, and ‘could make a move’ if they decide not to sign him permanently.

The Verdict: Sign

Currently rated at £25.2m, Traore could be the marquee signing that Frank Lampard’s team need to kick on, should they end up avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Likened to Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton by Martin Keown, the Spain international possesses blistering speed, a unique trait that the Blues could exploit to their advantage.

Of course, he has the added experience of playing in the top flight in both England and Spain too, and at 26 years of age is just about to enter his prime.

Nonetheless, he is a player that should get the supporters off of their seats and lift the mood around Goodison.

Davies downs Unicorns with ton

Steven Davies kept alive Surrey’s hopes of clinching a semi-final place in the Clydesdale Bank 40 with a superb 101 off 85 balls as the Lions overcame the Unicorns by 66 runs at Wormsley

22-Aug-2010
ScorecardSteven Davies kept alive Surrey’s hopes of clinching a semi-final place in the Clydesdale Bank 40 with a superb 101 off 85 balls as the Lions overcame the Unicorns by 66 runs at Wormsley.Davies, who shared in three-figure stands with Rory Hamilton-Brown and Stewart Walters, marked his 100th one-day appearance with his fifth century in List A cricket, and his first for Surrey, as the visitors posted 273 for 4. In reply, the Unicorns could only muster 207 for 8 as Steven Cheetham picked up career best figures of 4 for 32.Hamilton-Brown brought the 50 up for the Lions in the seventh over when he drove Neil Saker past mid-on for four. Seven overs later, the Surrey skipper reached his own half-century off 45balls, though not before he had lifted Saker over the rope at long-on for six. The fourth 100-plus partnership between Hamilton-Brown and Davies in this season’s CB40 arrived in the 14th over. But, moments later, Hamilton-Brown departed for 52 when he lofted Jahed Ahmed to mid-off.Davies, who pulled and on drove with authority, offered just one chance, on 67, when he was dropped by Josh Knappett off the bowling of Jackson Thompson. Two overs later, Walters went to his second successive half-century in the CB40, off 64 balls, by despatching Thompson’s offspin over wide mid-on for his fourth boundary.Glenn Querl, who was the pick of the Unicorns’ attack, then pegged Surrey back, bowling Davies and Jason Roy in successive overs with almost identical full-length deliveries. With Matthew Spriegel falling to a brilliant catch at long-off off the bowling of Jonathan Miles in the 38th over, the Lions had lost three wickets in five overs for 19 runs. But Walters finished with an unbeaten 78 off 85 balls to give the visitors a daunting total.Jackson Thompson briefly had Surrey worried when he struck three off-side boundaries in the first over of the Unicorns’ reply. But, three overs later, Steven Cheetham found a way through Thompson’s defences. With Chris Murtagh slicing to backward point in the 12th over, the 22-year-old had first-spell figures of 2 for 23.Any hopes the Unicorns had of pulling off a surprise were scuppered four overs later when Knappett, sweeping, fell leg before to Chris Schofield and Keith Parsons was run out at the bowler’s end, after working the former England legspinner to Jade Dernbach at short fine leg. After Sean Park fell to a catch behind off Gareth Batty, Mike O’Shea and Atiq Chishti added 66 in 13 overs for the sixth wicket. Atiq hit Schofield over long-on for six and then down the ground for four to bring the hundred up for the Unicorns in the 22nd over. But he was caught behind immediately upon Cheetham’s return to the attack, though not before O’Shea had posted a 61-ball half-century.Two overs later, Cheetham, who is on loan from Lancashire until the end of the season, picked up a fourth scalp when O’Shea holed out to deep square leg for 65.

Paul Harris determined to make 2011 World Cup squad

Paul Harris has said that making the squad for the 2011 World Cup was a priority and that was part of the reason he moved to the Highveld Lions for the domestic season ahead

Paul Harris, the South African left-arm spinner, has said that making the squad for the 2011 World Cup was a priority and that was part of the reason he moved from the Titans franchise to the Highveld Lions for the domestic season ahead. While Harris is a regular in South Africa’s Test squad, he faces competition from Johan Botha and Roelof van der Merwe, among others, in the limited-over formats and he hoped he would make use of the increased one-day opportunities with the Lions to impress national selectors.”The World Cup is a huge focus for me. I’m not getting any younger and, realistically, this is probably my last chance to make it,” Harris told . “Previously, the selectors haven’t had much to select me by, you can’t play just one or two limited-overs games for your franchise and expect to be chosen. It was very frustrating at the Titans and that’s why I moved to the Lions. I want to do well in one-day cricket and if I have a great season, then I’ll be knocking on the door.”Harris has played only three ODIs for South Africa to go with 32 Tests. The Titans were unable to guarantee Harris a place in all three versions of the game because of the continued good form of van der Merwe and Faf du Plessis, whereas the Lions assured Harris that he will start the season as their first-choice spinner. He will play three SuperSport Series games for them before the series against Pakistan in Dubai, and Harris said he would use the time to improve his bowling action.”I was a bit off my best last season and there are a few technical issues to work on. But I know the issues to work on, like my front arm, it’s stuff Richard Pybus [former Titans coach] and I worked on for years,” Harris said. “My action is a work in progress, I don’t have a classical action like a Monty Panesar, but I make up for it with guts and determination. I’m just working on getting my action as smooth as possible.”I want to win more games for South Africa. I know I can do the holding role that Graeme Smith likes me to do. One of the successes of the team has been that, when the runs begin to flow, Graeme can turn to me to stop it and that allows your Dale Steyns of the world to come in from the other end and knock heads over.”Harris’ pre-season training was interrupted by complications with his wisdom teeth extraction and he’s easing back into action. “I’m approaching the season very slowly, hoping to do well for the Lions first. I have a full month and a bit with them before going to Dubai. And I think I’ll play a bigger part in the home Tests against India than many people expect.”

Our shot-selection wasn't good – Sehwag

Virender Sehwag, as economical with words as with his technique, is not looking for any excuses after his side lost 15 wickets in 124.3 overs

India will look for a big effort from VVS Laxman to save the Test•AFP

Virender Sehwag, as economical with words as with his technique, is not looking for any excuses after his side lost 15 wickets in 124.3 overs and is still 63 runs behind Sri Lanka’s first-innings total, with a full day’s play to go. He said they were aware that their shot selection wasn’t good, that they were now hoping for rain to go with the best efforts of VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni.”Fantastic that we are getting a result even after losing one day’s play,” Sehwag said. “But it is bad for the Indian side. We are on the losing side unless VVS Laxman can play [well] tomorrow, and we are hopeful that after lunch or before tea, rain will come and the match gets washed out as a draw.”Asked about his shot to get out in the first innings, an attempted cut to a delivery that would have otherwise been called wide, with three fielders deep in the off side, Sehwag said: “That’s my scoring shot. If you look at the 7000 runs that I have scored, more than 3000 runs have come through the cut shot. In coming matches too, I will play the same shot. Sometimes you get out, sometimes you score runs. Almost every time, I score runs with the cut shot.”But aren’t India in the position because several batsmen played ill-advised shots? “Everybody is aware of that, but you can’t control certain things,” Sehwag said. “Sometimes you play that shot and you get away with that, sometimes you get out. That’s Test cricket where everybody has played enough matches. They are experienced. It happens in cricket.”Sehwag conceded the pitch hadn’t deteriorated enough to justify the scores and that it was “still a good track to bat on” which made him confident that India could still save the Test. “If you look at the last Test match that we played against South Africa, MS and VVS scored hundred-plus and remained not out and batted really well,” he said. “So they can do that. Laxman and Dravid did that against Australia in 2001, so we have the hope. Still we have one more pair of batsmen, they will go tomorrow and try and their best.”

Aston Villa must keep hold of John McGinn

The previous summer transfer window was a particularly busy one for Aston Villa, not just in terms of the new players they brought in such as Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia and Danny Ings but also because of the departure of Jack Grealish in a record-breaking transfer to Manchester City for £100m.

Having ended the previous season as Villa’s highest-rated player with an overall rating of 7.56/10 from WhoScored, as well as six goals and 10 assists under his belt, it’s safe to say that Grealish was a key player for the Villans.

Now into their first season without the Englishman, it seems as though the Midlands club could be in danger of losing another critical player when the next summer transfer window opens.

With recent reports claiming that fellow Premier League clubs Manchester United and Liverpool have sent scouts to watch John McGinn with a potential summer transfer move for the midfielder in mind, keeping hold of the Scotland international should be a top priority for the Midlands club.

Since making the move to Villa Park back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Scottish club Hibernian, the 27-year-old has cemented himself as a very important player for the team by racking up 132 appearances across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 21 assists along the way.

Having been described as a player that is “strong as an ox” by Joe Cole, McGinn has proved his importance to Steven Gerrard this season by racking up an overall performance rating of 7.15/10 from WhoScored, making him Villa’s second-highest rated player in the league this season beneath Philippe Coutinho.

Even though his current contract at the Midlands club isn’t set to expire until the summer of 2025, Johan Lange will have to keep an eye on the situation surrounding McGinn, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £70k-per-week according to Salary Sport, especially if any offers for him come forward in the summer.

With that in mind, it could be worth the hierarchy at Villa reassuring the midfield maestro of his importance to the team and what the club’s ambitions are moving forward in terms of breaking into Europe to make sure the £27m-rated star doesn’t get his head turned or else it would be an unforgivable disaster if he left this summer.

West Indies unchanged for second Test

West Indies have named an unchanged squad for the second Test against South Africa at St Kitts, despite losing the opening game in Trinidad heavily by 163 runs

Cricinfo staff16-Jun-2010West Indies have named an unchanged squad for the second Test against South Africa at St Kitts, despite losing the opening game in Trinidad heavily by 163 runs. Fast bowler Kemar Roach has been retained, implying that he has recovered fully from the ankle injury which ruled him out of the five-match ODI series before the first Test. The frontline seamers in Trinidad, Ravi Rampaul and debutant Nelon Pascal, went wicketless in both innings. Dwayne Bravo took one wicket while the remaining 13 wickets which fell were accounted for by the spinners. Roach’s raw pace and ability to bowl yorkers with the new ball will come in handy for West Indies, should they play him at Warner Park. However, the batting has been the biggest worry. West Indies crumbled to 102 in their first innings in Trinidad and, chasing 457 in their second, managed just 293 with only the captain Chris Gayle passing fifty.Squad: Chris Gayle (Capt), Dwayne Bravo (vice-captain), Travis Dowlin, Brendan Nash, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Darren Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Sulieman Benn, Shane Shillingford, Ravi Rampaul, Nelon Pascal, Kemar Roach

Rangers must start Diallo vs Annan

After securing a 2-0 win over Hibernian in their latest SPFL match, Rangers are back in action again this evening with a Scottish Cup clash against Annan Athletic.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst could select to be in his starting XI for today’s match, one figure that didn’t start against Hibs in midweek that we feel should be in the team from the beginning on this occasion to take on the Scottish League One side is Amad Diallo.

Since joining the reigning SPFL champions last month on a loan deal from Manchester United until the end of the season, the winger managed to score a goal on his Rangers debut in their 3-3 draw against Ross County and keep his place in the team for the defeat against Celtic.

Described as having “unbelievable” feet by former United teammate Dan James, the 19-year-old then dropped out of the team to be a late substitute in the 5-0 win over Hearts and then not feature at all in the recent win against Hibs.

In 14 combined appearances for United’s senior and U23 side, the youngster has managed to rack up seven goals and five assists, highlighting his attacking capabilities and what he could offer Rangers this season.

Looking ahead to today’s match, this could be a great opportunity for the teenager to get back into the team and really show Van Bronckhorst and the Rangers fans what he’s capable of and make a claim that he should be a regular starter for the side throughout the remainder of the season.

In his recent press conference ahead of the Cup clash, Van Bronckhorst said that he will make changes to his team for today’s match, which could be a signal that Diallo, who is currently valued at £16.2m according to Transfermarkt, may be in line to make his return to the starting XI.

With his knack for scoring goals and clear technical ability that James praised him for, Diallo could be a terrifying prospect for Annan and their defenders to have to deal with if he’s able to express himself and show off his talents again.
