Glamorgan continued their impressive recent form to complete back-to-back innings victories in the County Championship with a final-day win over Gloucestershire at the Swalec Stadium.The Welsh county wrapped the clash up with 25 overs to spare when they bowled out Gloucestershire for only 162 to seal the win by an innings and four runs, coincidentally the same margin of victory they achieved over Northamptonshire last week.And the wins created some history as it was the first time Glamorgan have won two consecutive first-class games by an innings since they lifted the first of their three County Championship titles in 1948.It was Glamorgan’s fourth win in six outings, taking them to 97 points in the Division Two table. They took 23 points from the contest to six by Gloucestershire, who slipped to their third defeat of the summer.Gloucestershire resumed the final morning on 12 for 1 in their first innings, still 154 runs behind after Glamorgan had amassed an impressive 583 for 9 declared. Huw Waters set Glamorgan on their way when he struck in the fourth over of the day to have Jon Batty caught low down at first slip by Jim Allenby.Visiting captain Alex Gidman and Hamish Marshall set about a fightback in a 40-run partnership for the third wicket. But Allenby, who tops both Glamorgan’s batting and bowling averages, struck to have Marshall adjudged leg before to a ball that nip backed into the New Zealander.That left Gloucestershire in some trouble at 65 for 3, still 101 runs adrift, but they found themselves in more trouble when Gidman went lbw attempting to sweep Dean Cosker. James Franklin and Chris Taylor made it to lunch at 92 for 4, but shortly after the interval Cosker struck to remove Taylor, who was caught at short leg by Gareth Rees.After that the wickets fell at regular intervals and Gloucestershire were not helped when Stephen Snell was run out with a direct hit by Ben Wright, Glamorgan’s second innings hero, attempting a suicidal single.From 113 for 6 Gloucestershire soon slipped to 120 for 7 as Robert Croft trapped James Franklin leg before. It was a wicket that took Croft to 992 first-class wickets for Glamorgan and into fourth place in the club’s all-time list of wicket-takers, overtaking Malcolm Nash.There was some rearguard resistance from the Gloucestershire tail as Jon Lewis hit a flurry of fours and Gemaal Hussain struck Jamie Dalrymple for six. Dalrymple had his revenge with the next ball as Hussain went to a bat-pad catch by Wright. And just as Lewis and Anthony Ireland looked as if they may avoid a defeat by an innings, Ireland was run out by David Harrison.

Shiv [Chanderpaul] and [Brendan] Nash getting hundreds was always going to be good for us.”The main thing Gayle took out of the match was the side’s better batting performance in the first innings, even including the period on the fourth morning. “I am satisfied because our plan was to bat out the day, and when you looked at the way they bowled at us it was always going to be difficult for us to score,” he said. “So we just tried to bat as many overs as possible.” The final Test begins at Kensington Oval on Saturday.

West Bromwich Albion’s next Championship game sees them take on Millwall at The Den on Saturday after succumbing to a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Preston North End in midweek, leaving Valerien Ismael in desperate need of a strong performance and positive result from his side this weekend.

In terms of which players the Baggies boss could select in his starting XI to take on the Lions, one man who didn’t start in the midweek defeat but we feel should be in the team from the beginning on Saturday is Callum Robinson.

In the Preston game, the attacker – who is currently picking up £18k-per-week according to Salary Sport – was brought on in the 56th minute to replace Matt Phillips but could only record two shots at goal in his time on the pitch, with both being off target.

Despite this underwhelming return, the Irishman’s previous appearance for the Baggies off the bench in their 3-0 win over Peterborough United last weekend was a much more eventful one, with Robinson showing his attacking and creative ability by providing two assists in just 16 minutes.

Described as a player who “gives his all” for the team on the pitch by Baggies podcaster Adrian Goldberg, the 26-year-old should be given the chance to show what he can do from the start once again after Daryl Dike unfortunately suffered a muscle injury and will be out of action for a significant period of time.

The Express & Star recently revealed in a poll of West Brom fans that 90% of respondents would like to see Ismael relieved of his duties at The Hawthorns, presumably due to the fact that Albion have won just one of their six previous league games. Therefore, the match at Millwall could be huge in terms of West Brom’s promotion hopes as well as the manager’s immediate future at the club.

It could also be a big one for Robinson if he can show why he should be starting regularly. In the process, he may just keep his boss in a job for a little while longer if he makes an impact similar to his one against Peterborough.

Sarel Burger’s all-round effort helped Namibia brush aside Bermuda’s challenge yet again in Windhoek. Burger hit a quick, unbeaten half-century to shepherd the chase after his three-wicket burst had limited Bermuda to an insufficient 155.Even that moderate score was reached thanks to a generous helping of wides from the Namibia bowlers – 24 of them. Extras was the highest contributor, boosting Bermuda by 30 runs. After the visitors chose to bat, Bermuda progressed to a satisfactory 60 for 2, but the innings unravelled with the quick dismissals of key batsmen David Hemp and Steven Outerbridge.Bermuda lost six wickets for 48 to slide to 108 for 8, and were spared further embarrassment by the ninth-wicket pair of Malachi Jones and Jordan DeSilva, who added 45 in the biggest stand of the innings. As in the previous game, though, Bermuda were unable to play out their full quota of overs, folding up in the 40th.Namibia’s chase was smooth, the only hiccup was the early exit of opener Raymond van Schoor. After that, Gerhard Rudolph and Burger added 57 for the second wicket, before Rudolph was caught behind. That brought in captain Craig Williams, who smashed a 37-ball 49 to finish the game with more than 20 overs to spare.

Newcastle United are ‘likely’ to sign two players this week, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards. 

The lowdown

Last weekend, Newcastle played host to relegation rivals Watford, who sit just above the bottom three. The Magpies took the lead through Allan Saint-Maximin, only for Joao Pedro to snatch a point for the Hornets three minutes from time.

The draw leaves Eddie Howe’s men 19th in the table with just one win and 12 points from their first 20 matches.

Their next match sees them travel to 15th-placed Leeds United on Saturday, with the Whites putting daylight between themselves and the danger zone with back-to-back wins in the league, so it’s fair to say that the pressure is on for the Magpies.

Edwards took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to write that Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos is ‘edging closer’ to joining, and while his arrival is yet to be confirmed, senior club officials have been hard at  work trying to bolster the squad before the weekend trip to Elland Road.

The journalist is currently unsure about the identity of the second player who’s likely to join, as he tweeted: “Diego Carlos is edging closer to a #nufc move but still not confirmed yet. Told senior club officials have been working round the clock to secure targets and boost squad before Leeds. They have encountered resistance at every turn but 2 players (I can’t get other name) are likely”.

The verdict

Carlos’ impending arrival should be a significant boost given the Magpies’ defensive struggles. They have the worst record for expected goals against in the Premier League, but the hope will be that the 2019/20 Europa League winner with Sevilla shores them up at the back.

Who could the mystery second man be? Perhaps it’s Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata, for whom Newcastle have reportedly made an offer, and the Colombian marksman is believed to be open to joining.

If the Magpies agree to meet Atalanta’s €45m (£37.6m) asking price, that may be a deal they can get done in the next five days.

“Antonio Conte has a cunning plan to use Traore’s pace to turn him into a wing-back.

“We know that Conte loves to play with a back three and now he has the backing of the Tottenham sporting director, Fabio Paratici, who has a long-term admiration for Traore.

“£20m should be enough to prise him away from Wolverhampton Wanderers, I’d expect a formal bid very soon.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

At £20m, the winger could be an absolute coup for Conte and Paratici as the Italians aim to solve Tottenham’s wing-back conundrum.

At 25-years-old, Traore already possesses years of English top flight experience without being too long in the tooth – all whilst proving to be a real threat on countless occasions.

According to WhoScored, the winger has averaged a very impressive 4.5 dribbles per 90 in the Premier League this season – almost double that of Lucas Moura, who is Spurs’ best in that bracket.

If Conte can successfully re-mould the former Barcelona man into a right-wing back, the potential could be limitless in terms of threat from out wide.
