Aston Villa must keep hold of John McGinn

The previous summer transfer window was a particularly busy one for Aston Villa, not just in terms of the new players they brought in such as Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia and Danny Ings but also because of the departure of Jack Grealish in a record-breaking transfer to Manchester City for £100m.

Having ended the previous season as Villa’s highest-rated player with an overall rating of 7.56/10 from WhoScored, as well as six goals and 10 assists under his belt, it’s safe to say that Grealish was a key player for the Villans.

Now into their first season without the Englishman, it seems as though the Midlands club could be in danger of losing another critical player when the next summer transfer window opens.

With recent reports claiming that fellow Premier League clubs Manchester United and Liverpool have sent scouts to watch John McGinn with a potential summer transfer move for the midfielder in mind, keeping hold of the Scotland international should be a top priority for the Midlands club.

Since making the move to Villa Park back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Scottish club Hibernian, the 27-year-old has cemented himself as a very important player for the team by racking up 132 appearances across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 21 assists along the way.

Having been described as a player that is “strong as an ox” by Joe Cole, McGinn has proved his importance to Steven Gerrard this season by racking up an overall performance rating of 7.15/10 from WhoScored, making him Villa’s second-highest rated player in the league this season beneath Philippe Coutinho.

Even though his current contract at the Midlands club isn’t set to expire until the summer of 2025, Johan Lange will have to keep an eye on the situation surrounding McGinn, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £70k-per-week according to Salary Sport, especially if any offers for him come forward in the summer.

With that in mind, it could be worth the hierarchy at Villa reassuring the midfield maestro of his importance to the team and what the club’s ambitions are moving forward in terms of breaking into Europe to make sure the £27m-rated star doesn’t get his head turned or else it would be an unforgivable disaster if he left this summer.

Journalist shares Broja to Saints update

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Alex Crook of talkSPORT has made a transfer claim involving Southampton as they eye a permanent deal for Chelsea loanee Armando Broja.

The Lowdown: Saints bid mooted…

Over the January window, some reliable sources claimed that CEO and transfer chief Martin Semmens was plotting a bid to sign Broja permanently near the end of last month.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-latest-developments/” title=”Southampton latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, according to noted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Southampton were preparing an offer for the Albania international who has really impressed on his temporary St. Mary’s stint.

However, while that did not appear to come to fruition, talkSPORT reporter Crook has made an interesting claim on potential talks in the next two months.

The Latest: talkSPORT reporter makes claim…

Speaking to GMS, the reporter claims talks could ‘really’ accelerate ‘come the end of February, middle of March’ if Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are well clear of the drop zone by that point.

“If come the end of February, middle of March, Saints are safe from relegation, then talks will really ramp up.” he explained.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Signing the 20-year-old indefinitely should come as one of Semmens’ top summer priorities alongside the possible addition of soon-to-be free agent Sam Johnstone between the sticks.

Broja’s brilliance was perhaps best summed up by his instinctive near post finish in Southampton’s 3-2 victory away to Spurs on Wednesday evening and highlights just how crucial of a presence he is going forward.

A imposing physical striker at 6 foot 3, the Saints attacker will arguably only get better and the south coast side must do all they can to keep him for Hasenhutll, especially since Chelsea reportedly value him at around £20 million.

Sky pundit Micah Richards is a fan, calling him ‘quality’ recently (via football.london), and Semmens would be remiss if he didn’t make a serious effort.

Celtic: McAvennie hoping for a new defender

Celtic pundit Frank McAvennie is hoping that the club can sign a defender in the final hours of the January window, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Urhoghide set to leave

The Hoops have brought in five players during the winter market, but none of those have been centre-back additions. Also, youngster Osaze Urhoghide looks set to depart on loan to join Belgian side KV Oostende in the final hours of the window.

Kieran Devlin wasn’t expecting much when it comes to arrivals at Parkhead on Monday, but McAvennie – who often discusses Celtic matters with Football Insider – is still holding out hope.

The Latest: McAvennie’s comments

The former Hoops striker was talking to Football Insider following the news on Urhoghide. He feels that Ange Postecoglou should be looking to add a defender, keeping his ‘fingers crossed’ for late activity, saying:

“I do think Celtic need a new centre-back.

“Jullien still isn’t back, and as good as Carter-Vickers and Starfelt have been recently, it’s the one place we lack a bit of depth.

“There have been links with some defenders, obviously we’ve lost John Souttar to Rangers.

“That’s the one signing I would really like before the window shuts. That would give me a bit more confidence.

“I’m happy with the attack and midfield, we are well covered there. The defence does worry me a bit. Fingers crossed we can do something.”

The Verdict: Not pivotal

Urhoghide has made just one senior appearance for the Hoops this season and hasn’t featured in a Premiership matchday squad since September. Therefore, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if the club didn’t bolster their centre-back ranks should the ex-Sheffield Wednesday ace seal a temporary exit.

Postecoglou has plenty of options at the back with Christopher Jullien now fit following a lengthy layoff, so waiting until the summer could be a wise move.

Glamorgan seal crushing win

Glamorgan continued their impressive recent form to complete back-to-back innings victories in the County Championship with a final-day win over Gloucestershire at the Swalec Stadium

20-May-2010
Scorecard
Glamorgan continued their impressive recent form to complete back-to-back innings victories in the County Championship with a final-day win over Gloucestershire at the Swalec Stadium. The Welsh county wrapped the clash up with 25 overs to spare when they bowled out Gloucestershire for only 162 to seal the win by an innings and four runs, coincidentally the same margin of victory they achieved over Northamptonshire last week. And the wins created some history as it was the first time Glamorgan have won two consecutive first-class games by an innings since they lifted the first of their three County Championship titles in 1948.It was Glamorgan’s fourth win in six outings, taking them to 97 points in the Division Two table. They took 23 points from the contest to six by Gloucestershire, who slipped to their third defeat of the summer.Gloucestershire resumed the final morning on 12 for 1 in their first innings, still 154 runs behind after Glamorgan had amassed an impressive 583 for 9 declared. Huw Waters set Glamorgan on their way when he struck in the fourth over of the day to have Jon Batty caught low down at first slip by Jim Allenby.Visiting captain Alex Gidman and Hamish Marshall set about a fightback in a 40-run partnership for the third wicket. But Allenby, who tops both Glamorgan’s batting and bowling averages, struck to have Marshall adjudged leg before to a ball that nip backed into the New Zealander. That left Gloucestershire in some trouble at 65 for 3, still 101 runs adrift, but they found themselves in more trouble when Gidman went lbw attempting to sweep Dean Cosker. James Franklin and Chris Taylor made it to lunch at 92 for 4, but shortly after the interval Cosker struck to remove Taylor, who was caught at short leg by Gareth Rees. After that the wickets fell at regular intervals and Gloucestershire were not helped when Stephen Snell was run out with a direct hit by Ben Wright, Glamorgan’s second innings hero, attempting a suicidal single. From 113 for 6 Gloucestershire soon slipped to 120 for 7 as Robert Croft trapped James Franklin leg before. It was a wicket that took Croft to 992 first-class wickets for Glamorgan and into fourth place in the club’s all-time list of wicket-takers, overtaking Malcolm Nash. There was some rearguard resistance from the Gloucestershire tail as Jon Lewis hit a flurry of fours and Gemaal Hussain struck Jamie Dalrymple for six. Dalrymple had his revenge with the next ball as Hussain went to a bat-pad catch by Wright. And just as Lewis and Anthony Ireland looked as if they may avoid a defeat by an innings, Ireland was run out by David Harrison.

Jayawardene ton floors Zimbabwe

Sri Lanka won on the Duckworth-Lewis method as Zimbabwe only reached 29 for 1 in five overs instead of the required 43 for 1.

How they were out
Hawk-EyeMahela Jayawardene converted the tournament’s fastest fifty into a hundred•AFP

Batting was expected to be difficult on a slow and low pitch in Providence but the touch artist Mahela Jayawardene sparkled with a delightful ton, only the fourth batsman to hit a Twenty20 hundred, to charge Sri Lanka to 173. A heavy downpour after one over into the chase left Zimbabwe needing 104 from 11 initially, but it rained again to terminate the match after five overs were completed. Sri Lanka won on the D\L method as Zimbabwe only reached 29 for 1 when the par score was 43.The rains stayed away, however, until Jayawardene treated the sparse crowd to a charming knock. Only one other batsman in Sri Lanka’s top six touched double digits; it said much about the pitch and the form of the other batsmen but most importantly it highlighted Jayawardene’s mastery. There wasn’t a single shot in violence from Jayawardene. Not one looked ugly. Not for a moment did he look hurried. And yet, his strike-rate was over 150. It was such a graceful knock that it stood out amid the violence that this format usually brings in batsmen. Perhaps it’s his economy of movement and the languid flow of his bat that catches the eye. The experts reckoned the pitch would make hitting on the up a difficult task, that the ball would stop on the batsmen, that timing would be difficult to find. And it appeared so when the likes of Kumar Sangakkara and the rest batted. Not when Jayawardene took strike. There was a delicious six hit on the up over extra cover that was a perfect advertisement for Jayawardene’s skill. He was walking down the track to the medium pace of Elton Chigumbura but kept his head still and balance perfect. Chigumbura shortened his length to try and upset the balance but Jayawardene wafted his wand through the line and the ball soared over the extra-cover boundary.Jayawardene flowed right from the start today, collecting three boundaries in the first over from Chris Mpofu: A cut, a gorgeous on-the-up six over long off and a whiplash on-drive. He repeatedly drove the seamers through the off side and there was even a deft upper cut to a slow bouncer from Chigumbura, but he treated the spinners with more respect. He looked for opportunities to unfurl his cuts and sweeps against the slow men and rotated the strike with wristy nudges. In between, he slog-swept and pulled Price for boundaries, slog swept Graeme Cremer for a six, late cut and swatted Greg Lamb to the boundary.Zimbabwe perhaps erred by not starting with two spinners. Prosper Utseya, who has often bowled with Price in the Powerplays, chose to give Mpofu and Chigumbura three overs with the new ball. Those three overs leaked 35 runs and allowed Jayawardene to cut loose. And he went on to play an innings of style and substance.

Two Newcastle transfers may be immiennt

Newcastle United are ‘likely’ to sign two players this week, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

The lowdown

Last weekend, Newcastle played host to relegation rivals Watford, who sit just above the bottom three. The Magpies took the lead through Allan Saint-Maximin, only for Joao Pedro to snatch a point for the Hornets three minutes from time.

The draw leaves Eddie Howe’s men 19th in the table with just one win and 12 points from their first 20 matches.

Their next match sees them travel to 15th-placed Leeds United on Saturday, with the Whites putting daylight between themselves and the danger zone with back-to-back wins in the league, so it’s fair to say that the pressure is on for the Magpies.

The latest

Edwards took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to write that Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos is ‘edging closer’ to joining, and while his arrival is yet to be confirmed, senior club officials have been hard at  work trying to bolster the squad before the weekend trip to Elland Road.

The journalist is currently unsure about the identity of the second player who’s likely to join, as he tweeted: “Diego Carlos is edging closer to a #nufc move but still not confirmed yet. Told senior club officials have been working round the clock to secure targets and boost squad before Leeds. They have encountered resistance at every turn but 2 players (I can’t get other name) are likely”.

The verdict

Carlos’ impending arrival should be a significant boost given the Magpies’ defensive struggles. They have the worst record for expected goals against in the Premier League, but the hope will be that the 2019/20 Europa League winner with Sevilla shores them up at the back.

Who could the mystery second man be? Perhaps it’s Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata, for whom Newcastle have reportedly made an offer, and the Colombian marksman is believed to be open to joining.

If the Magpies agree to meet Atalanta’s €45m (£37.6m) asking price, that may be a deal they can get done in the next five days.
