Worcestershire struggle on and off the field

Not only did the side slip to the brink of an innings defeat against Warwickshire, but Worcestershire have also been hit by the shattering news that Kabir Ali has asked for permission to talk to other counties

George Dobell at Edgbaston04-Sep-2009
ScorecardWorcestershire have endured many a grim day this season, but when they reflect on their 2009 campaign, the third day at Edgbaston might be considered a new low. Not only did the side slip to the brink of an innings defeat against their keenest rivals, but Worcestershire have also been hit by the shattering news that Kabir Ali, their star bowler, has asked for permission to talk to other counties. The 28-year-old swing bowler still has a year on his current contract. The Worcestershire board will meet on Monday night to consider Ali’s request. Bearing in mind that the club have previously stated that they did not want to keep anyone who didn’t want to play for them, it appears likely that Kabir will be a free agent by next week. He will surely have no shortage of suitors. No-one in English cricket (with more than 100 first-class dismissals) has a better strike-rate than Ali and, when fully fit, he is arguably the best new ball bowler in county cricket. Worcestershire’s reliance on him is illustrated by the fact they have not won a championship game without him since 2006.Some will speculate that money is the motivation for the request. The fact that Kabir is due a benefit season suggests that is not the case, however. Instead he appears to have simply lost faith in a club that seems to lack ambition or direction. To compound matters, the club’s fitness coach has also resigned and they have pulled out of their attempt to sign Yorkshire’s Ajmal Shahzad for financial reasons. With Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket, forced to reduce his cricket budget by £300,000 ahead of next season and admitting they are unlikely to be able to afford an overseas player, it’s hard to avoid the impression that the club is close to meltdown.Gareth Batty and Steve Davies have already announced their departure from New Road and it is far from certain that Ali will be the last of those looking to leave. Several players have recently expressed their concern at the quality of facilities at the club – Worcestershire is the only first-class county without its own indoor centre – and the club’s ground redevelopment has been delayed as they are unable to fund the building. There was no consolation on the pitch at Edgbaston. A fine spell of swing bowling by Warwickshire’s 20-year-old allrounder, Chris Woakes, forced the visitors to follow-on and it will take a miracle for Worcestershire not suffer their first ‘double’ loss to Warwickshire – home and away in the same season – since 1933.Preying on the frailty of Worcestershire’s middle-order, Woakes claimed five wickets for 19 runs in a 40-ball spell as the visitors fell 289-runs short of the hosts’ first-innings total. Though Woakes’ primary weapon is an outswinger, his ability to move the ball back in creates uncertainty in the minds of batsmen and on this pitch – the stuff of swing bowler’s dreams – he was close to unplayable at times. It was the fifth five-wicket haul of his fledgling career, but his first of the season. He was awarded a well-earned county cap during the tea interval. After Moore was run-out, both men ending up at the bowler’s end after Mitchell declined Moore’s call for a single, Mitchell and Solanki appeared relatively untroubled against the probing Naqaash Tahir and the largely innocuous Sreesanth. The introduction of Woakes sparked a collapse, however, with Mitchell wafting at the bowler’s fifth delivery. Smith, who looks a shadow of the player he was, was bowled by one that pitched middle and hit off, before Moeen Ali and Steve Davies both pushed loosely at deliveries angled across them. Solanki was beaten by the one that nipped back before Gareth Andrew top-edged a wild cut and Richard Jones’s forward prod was beaten by late swing. Alexei Kervezee resisted impressively for a while, but with only timid tail-enders for company, he was caught at mid-off looking to hit over the top.Worcestershire fared a little better in the second innings. Moore, cutting and pulling with such power that the bowler, Sreesanth, felt the need to applaud him, led the way as Worcestershire compiled their second-highest opening stand of the season in first-class cricket.Yet when Mitchell fell, prodding at one he could have left, it hastened another sharp decline with the visitors losing three wickets in eight balls.Bell, at third man, did not have to move as Moore obligingly upper-cut Rankin into his hands, before Smith fell first ball, very well caught by Troughton at point. Moeen Ali survived the hat-trick ball before rain and bad light came to Worcestershire’s aid. Still requiring 166 to make Warwickshire bat again, they’ll need plenty more of it if they are to survive on the final day.Meanwhile Warwickshire have offered a contract to Maurice Holmes, a young off-spinner from Kent.

James McArthur is set to sign a new deal

Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur is set to extend his stay at the club after enjoying a fabulous start under the tutelage of new manager Patrick Vieira.

What’s the story?

According to LondonWorld, the 34-year-old is expected to put pen to paper on fresh terms over the coming weeks, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2022.

The report states that: “LondonWorld understands that both the player and club have agreed to extend their time together for another year, and they are just working out the final details before the former Scotland international puts pen to paper.”

There’s no indication of how long the proposed deal would be, but given his age, it would likely be a one-year extension.

Crystal Palace fans will be elated

McArthur arrived at Selhurst Park via a £5.5m move from Wigan Athletic back in 2014 and has gone on to establish himself as a mainstay in the capital club’s engine room, making 238 appearances in all competitions.

The former Hamilton Academical academy graduate hit 300 appearances in England’s top-flight before the recent international break, and the Accies academy director George Cairns lauded the diminutive midfielder’s achievement.

Cairns told Not The Old Firm: “It’s a huge achievement for James. 300 appearances in the Premier League? That is fantastic.

“It’s absolutely phenomenal and what he has gone on to achieve down south has been excellent. You can only commend him as he has done fantastically well.”

And the £55k-per-week earner appears to be getting better with age with Vieira dubbing him a warrior. A hamstring injury ruled him out of the 3-3 draw with Burnley last time out, but he had started every league game up until that point this season.

With Palace beginning a transitional period under their French coach, keeping experienced heads such as McArthur’s around will be extremely beneficial, and the club’s supporters will be elated at this latest revelation.

Quem entrar vai dar conta do recado.

Se for escalado, independente do jogo, vou procurar fazer o melhor – finalizou.

Confira outras respostas do zagueiro Nogueira:

BCCI sanctions $5 million for IPL teams in 2008 Champions League

The BCCI has sanctioned Rs 22 crore each to the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals as compensation for cancellation of the Champions League

Ajay S Shankar17-Aug-2009

A thumbs-up no doubt for Rajasthan Royals•Associated Press

In an unprecedented financial bailout, the Indian board has sanctioned Rs 22 crore (approximately $5 million) each to the Chennai Super Kings – owned by the BCCI secretary – and Rajasthan Royals, the 2008 IPL finalists, as compensation for cancellation of the Champions League Twenty20 last November.None of the other six teams invited for the tournament’s 2008 edition, which was cancelled due to the Mumbai attacks, has received any compensation from their national boards. The tournament rules are clear that teams are not entitled to compensation from the organisers in the event of cancellation but individual boards are free to take a separate decision in this regard.Chennai Super Kings is owned by India Cements, which is headed by N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, who is also a member of the IPL and Champions League governing councils. Rajasthan Royals is co-owned by Emerging Media, a UK-based consortium, and the Chellarams, the Nigeria-based shipping owners. The cancellation of the tournament cost each team a guaranteed participation fee of $500,000 and a share of the total prize money of $6 million, apart from potential sponsorship revenue. Chennai and Rajasthan have not qualified for the 2009 edition of the tournament, scheduled to be staged across three Indian venues from October 8.When contacted, Lalit Modi, chairman of IPL and Champions League, and also a BCCI vice-president, confirmed the IPL compensation amount and told Cricinfo that part of the money has already been paid to the two franchises. Modi declined, however, to comment further on the issue or provide details. The other teams that were invited for the tournament last year were Victoria and Western Australia, the domestic Twenty20 finalists from Australia, and Titans and Dolphin, the South African toppers, Middlesex, the England champions, and Sialkot Stallions from Pakistan.Cricket Australia is planning to provide some financial compensation for Victoria and Western Australia from the revenue it hopes to gain from the tournament this year. But these amounts, which will cover advance travel booking, team preparation and lost sponsorship opportunities, are not expected to match the Indian payout. Cricket South Africa declined to comment on the issue but Cassim Docrat, chief executive of Dolphins, confirmed that he has received no information about any compensation. The BCCI is a founding partner of the Champions League Twenty20, along with Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA), with all three countries enjoying joint decision-making control over the multi-nation, multi-club event. The England and Pakistan boards have no management stake in the tournament. An official familiar with the decision said there are two opinions within the Indian board on the compensation amount for the IPL teams. “Some feel that the compensation is reasonable considering the money that the franchises would have possibly earned from the tournament,” the official said. “But others have expressed concerns that such a move could set a bad precedent. They fear that other IPL franchises may demand similar bailouts if such situations crop up again in the future, even during the IPL.”However, a member of the IPL governing council said the hefty compensation package for the Indian franchises was reasonable given the amount they would have gained from the tournament and loss of the sponsorship money that had been committed to the two teams. The BCCI’s original agreement with the IPL franchises included a possible slot in the Champions League for the finalists, and this was factored into most of the major sponsorship agreements the franchises had entered into.”The IPL’s duty and obligation is towards its franchises and a fruitful, long-term relationship,” the IPL official said. “The IPL’s promise to the franchises was that if you qualify for the Champions League, you will play. But due to unfortunate circumstances, that didn’t happen last year and we had to honour that commitment in the best manner possible.”The Champions League Twenty20 was set to start on December 3 last year but was aborted after terrorists attack on Mumbai, one of the main venues, on November 26. The tournament has now been expanded to include 12 teams and invitations have been extended to this year’s domestic toppers from seven countries, including three teams from India, two each from Australia, South Africa and England and one each from New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Wolves fans want permanent Hwang move done

A number of Wolves supporters have urged the club to sign Hwang Hee-chan on a permanent deal, following interest from Liverpool and Manchester City.

The South Korean moved to Molineux in the summer transfer window, joining on loan from RB Leipzig and looking to make his mark in the Premier League.

Hwang has done exactly that, scoring four goals in six starts to date and adding substantial firepower to the attack alongside Raul Jimenez.

The hope is that the 25-year-old’s move will become a permanent one but Wolves will be wary of interest from both Liverpool and Man City.

The Mirror claimed [via Talking Wolves on Twitter] that both Premier League heavyweights see Hwang as someone who could further bolster their already impressive attacking options.

Nottinghamshire struggle on rain-hit day

The first day was a simple case of David Hussey versus Yorkshire. He was the only batsman to reach double figures on the truncated first day at Scarborough

John Ward at Scarboroguh21-Jul-2009
ScorecardThe first day was a simple case of David Hussey versus Yorkshire. He was the only batsman to reach double figures on the truncated first day as Tim Bresnan in particular broke through the Nottinghamshire top order almost like a knife through butter. Helped by good slip catching, Bresnan took four cheap wickets as he moved the ball sharply at times and only Nottinghamshire’s Australian import could stand up against bowling that would have done credit to an Ashes Test match.Much of this day did little for the image of the game, mainly due to the pernickety ‘health and safety’ attitude adopted by the umpires John Steele and Neil Bainton towards the weather. There was a light drizzle just before play started, and when it stopped they decided the light was unfit, though it was scarcely dangerous. The usual sizeable Scarborough crowd grew increasingly angry before play finally started at 12.15 pm.The pitch looked a batsman’s paradise, and Nottinghamshire decided to bat on winning the toss. Unfortunately for them, they seemed to be still affected by the batting traumas of their recent defeat against Durham, and they struggled from the start against some typically fine bowling by Matthew Hoggard and Bresnan. The first boundary was a fortuitous edge through the slips by Bilal Shafayat, and in the seventh over, with the score only 12, Matt Wood edged a ball from Bresnan into the slips and was gone. Shafayat soon followed, lbw to a full-length ball from Hoggard, and Nottinghamshire were 15 for 2.Hussey broke the shackles with a fine off-driven boundary off Hoggard, who nevertheless finished an opening spell with figures of 7-3-9-1; surprisingly, he did not bowl again. Dion Kruis was not a satisfactory replacement, as his line and length were erratic, and Hussey enjoyed his offerings, driving him through the covers twice for four. Kruis then responded with a sharp lifter that lobbed off Hussey’s bat into no-man’s-land on the off side, but this was almost his only dangerous ball of the day. Bresnan removed Mark Wagh, wafting outside the off stump and edging a catch to Gerard Brophy, returning to the side after a finger injury; 33 for 3.Lunch was taken nine runs later, and then came a lost session. The umpires decided the light was too poor to start again after the interval, and this time the crowd took it rather better. Half an hour later the good news was that the light had improved; the bad news was that a drizzle had started. It was so light that scarcely an umbrella was seen and few spectators bothered to take cover. Play did not restart until 4.20, when the crowd were again growing restive. The visitors’ troubles increased, and without Hussey they would have been a disaster indeed. In the second over Samit Patel was caught low at second slip off Bresnan, but Kruis continued to bowl at the other end, to the pleasure of Hussey. He continued to hit him for off-side boundaries with ease, but Bresnan was much more challenging, and briefly there was a fascinating battle, as Bresnan beat him several times with superb deliveries, while Hussey was intent on taking control, hitting him too for superb fours, straight and to the off. In contrast Ali Brown was never happy and fell to another slip catch off Bresnan. When before has the normally aggressive Brown scored only 5 in a partnership of 41?Hussey reached his 50, and it was a surprise to discover he faced as many as 71 balls, with a magnificent six over the sightscreen off Adil Rashid, who had taken two of the slip catches. Hussey also hit ten fours, one of them an overthrow early on when he was nearly run out backing up too far. Then, yet again, the umpires incurred the wrath of the crowd by taking the players off for bad light, and they did not come on again. It is scarcely good public relations when a crowd goes home feeling badly short-changed, and cricket’s authorities need to take another long overdue look at their attitude with regard to poor, but not dangerous, light. Yorkshire still have to win a championship match, and they are on top in this one, despite Hussey, but they need a better deal from the weather and the umpires.
