Southampton predicted starting XI v Chelsea

After dropping two points against Burnley in the Premier League at the weekend in a 2-2 draw at St. Mary’s, Southampton are back in Carabao Cup action tonight, with a tough test against league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge standing in the way of thhrm and the next stage of the tournament.

Ahead of the match against Thomas Tuchel’s side, Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed that Saints winger Mohamed Elyounoussi will miss the match in west London after being set to undergo surgery on his hand.

Taking this into account, here’s how we feel Southampton will line up against Chelsea tonight.

In goal, we think Hasenhuttl will give Alex McCarthy a rest and put Fraser Forster in, as he played in their previous Carabao Cup match against Sheffield United, to see if he can help the club continue further through the competition.

For the defence, at right-back, we can see the Austrian giving Valentino Livramento a rest after scoring against Burnley at the weekend and putting Yan Valery back into the side.

On the left, with Romain Perraud failing to impress against Sean Dyche’s side, we reckon it could be a good option for Hasenhuttl to take him out of the team and put Kyle Walker-Peters back in after not featuring in their previous two league games.

At centre-back, Lyanco might come in next to Mohammed Salisu to give Jan Bednarek a rest before their next Premier League match against Watford on Saturday.

In central midfield, we can see Hasenhuttl sticking with Oriol Romeu and Ibrahima Diallo considering that club captain James Ward-Prowse is still serving his three-game ban and Will Smallbone has yet to make a senior appearance for the Saints so far this season.

On the wings, we think the Saints boss will go for Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond ahead of Theo Walcott, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £75k-per-week according to Spotrac, unimpressive against Burnley, with the injured Elyounoussi also dropping out.

Up top, with Hasenhuttl confirming that Armando Broja can’t play against his parent club, we think Che Adams and Adam Armstrong will come back into the team as Southampton’s main goalscoring threats to see if they can get past Chelsea’s stubborn defence, which has only conceded three goals in nine Premier League matches so far this season.

Strauss shines with 150

A round-up from the latest County Championship matches as Andrew Strauss finds form ahead of the Test series

Cricinfo staff28-Apr-2009Division TwoAndrew Strauss showed his readiness for the Test series against West Indies, with a sparkling 150, and Phillip Hughes continued his fine form to end unbeaten on 99 when rain ended play at Southgate as Middlesex dominated against Leicestershire. Much had been made of Strauss and Hughes opening together, but Billy Godleman split the international pair when he walked out with Strauss. However, he lasted just five balls before the two star acts came together and their stand was worth 244 in 53 overs. Strauss dominated the partnership with a free-flowing innings which included 22 fours and a six before he edged Wayne White to Paul Nixon. Hughes, who hit 118 against Glamorgan last week, was one short of another hundred when bad light stopped play.Gloucestershire’s lower order offered important resistance against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road, with Ian Saxelby unbeaten on 54, after the top order struggled. David Wigley ended with four wickets and was central to the problems experienced by the visitors. He removed Chris Taylor and Alex Gidman in quick succession, both courtesy sharp catches, to reduce Gloucestershire to 136 for 5 before the recovery began through James Franklin. He had 38 when Nicky Boje bowled him and four balls later Boje trapped Jon Lewis lbw. However, Steven Snell (47) formed a useful stand with Saxelby, until Wigley claimed his fourth to end Snell’s effort thanks to a good catch at square leg. Saxelby, though, remained firm with his maiden first-class half century.Only 38 overs were possible on the opening day at Cardiff as Glamorgan reached 79 for 2 against Derbyshire and the ground was giving a thorough test ahead of the opening Ashes encounter. There was plenty of rain for the new drainage system to handle but at one stage the ground staff had trouble getting the new cover off the square. In the play possible Graham Wagg continued his good form with both wickets to fall, but Mark Cosgrove played solidly to end unbeaten on 37.Division OneFor a full report from the opening day between Somerset and Durham at Taunton click here. For a full report from the opening day between Yorkshire and Worcestershire at Headingley click here.

County stint would have helped for Ashes – Clark

Stuart Clark, the Australian fast bowler, has admitted that a county stint would have helped him prepare better for the Ashes instead of a one-day series in the UAE.Clark was originally due to represent Kent as their overseas player but the Australia call-up has forced the county to change their plans and recruit the South African, Wayne Parnell, instead. Clark, who is making a comeback after elbow surgery in December, felt a more rigorous programme in England would have helped fine-tune his comeback instead of a rather limited workload in the UAE, especially with the fast bowlers being rotated.”That’s no secret that I need to do some more cricket work,” Clark told . “But I’m getting a fair amount of cricket work in the nets, which is something I wouldn’t have got at home, being winter, and there’s not many facilities available other than probably Brisbane.”England, obviously, I would have gone and played county cricket [if not selected for Australia] and it would have been more competitive. But what I’ve found here is the fact that we’ve got nets and without the pressure of having to win or lose, it’s not result-orientated, it’s just practice.”Clark, however, reiterated that playing for Australia was always his first priority, injury permitting. He wasn’t expecting a call-up and was preparing to head to England earlier this month and he admitted to Cricinfo that he “nearly fell off his chair” when Cricket Australia informed him of his selection.”I would have played some more cricket as such, but this is an opportunity to play for Australia and no one should ever turn that down,” Clark said. “Maybe from a selfish point of view that might have been the best thing for me.”But it’s another chance to play for Australia and at one stage in my life I would have given my right arm – or my left arm, my right one I need to bowl – to play for Australia, so it would be rude to turn it down, wouldn’t it?”He said his recovery has been smooth. He bowled eight overs in the first ODI and three in the third match, taking a wicket in each game.”I’m pain-free now, unfortunately in India I hurt it and as much as I tried to put it out of my mind, on the days when it did feel good I bowled well and when it felt bad I didn’t,” he said. “Now that I don’t have to worry about it, it’s really good.”

Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, has questioned John Buchanan’s idea of having multiple captains for a Twenty20 team and said such a move would only confuse issues within the squad. Arthur said effective communication among all the team members and the coach is mandatory for any such experiment to succeed.”It has to be one leader always,” Arthur told Cricinfo. “I favour the one-captain situation because everybody in the team is clear about who is in charge at all times.”Buchanan, the former Australia coach who is now in charge of the Kolkata Knight Riders, has unveiled a new concept of multiple captains which he says would change the whole approach to captaincy and leadership in cricket. But Arthur said that if a team has more than one captain, players will be left confused and disoriented, especially in the midst of a match situation. “If you have more than one guy as leader, you don’t know whom to turn to,” he said.Arthur said he would like to speak to Buchanan in detail about the new concept to know what exactly what it was all about. “I really don’t know what he is aiming at,” Arthur said. “But I know from experience that communication within a team is fundamental to its success, and that could be a problem when you actually implement this idea on the ground. The players need to know clearly who is in charge.”Ray Jennings, the former South Africa coach, said that Buchanan’s idea is interesting and might just work. “He is a very experienced coach and he obviously has his own game plans,” Jennings, the Royal Challengers Bangalore coach and Buchanan’s IPL rival, told Cricinfo. “I respect him for that. It is an interesting idea and it is an idea that can work.”

West Ham fans unhappy with Angelo Ogbonna

Some West Ham United fans were far from happy with the performance of Angelo Obgonna during their 2-1 defeat to Brentford on Sunday.

The Hammers have had a positive start to the new campaign, winning both of their Europa League matches to date. However, they did not have the best game against the Bees at the London Stadium, twice going behind as they lost their second home match of the season (whufc.com).

Ogbonna was selected by David Moyes at the heart of the back four, and he did not have the best performance against the Bees. He won just two of his five ground duels and completed a worrying 70% of his passes (SofaScore).

Moyes will be hoping that the defender improves when the Premier League returns after the international break, with the Irons facing a run of fixtures which includes clashes against Everton, Tottenham and Manchester City.

These West Ham supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the Italian’s performance on Sunday, which one fan branded as “awful”.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Ogbonna

“Ogbonna has been dreadful….”

“Ogbonna been poor all season tbh, constantly getting done for pace and giving away stupid fouls”

“He had a few dodgy moments Zouma but at least he was winning his Aerial duels and passing the ball well. I thought Ogbonna was the worst player and then Soucek was pretty poor also.”

“Poor 1st half. Good 2nd half. We didn’t take our chances. Soucek and Ogbonna poor, Areola needs to be number 1, Coufal with a stinker as well. Heartbroken to concede in the 94th. These things can happen, we go again”
