Phillip Hughes has positioned Australia for victory and himself for celebrity. Just 11 days removed from posting a fourth-ball duck in his maiden Test innings, Hughes broke George Headley’s 79-year-old record to become the youngest batsman in history to score centuries in each innings of a Test. His unbeaten 136 in the second innings at Kingsmead led Australia to 292 for 3 at stumps, and an impregnable lead of 506.Fittingly, Hughes raised his second century in three days with an upper-cut boundary off the bowling of Morne Morkel. It was that stroke that brought about his early demise at the Wanderers last week, and prompted the likes of AB de Villiers and Mickey Arthur to publicly declare it a weakness in his armoury. Undeterred by the criticism, Hughes has continued to play the cut shot with frequency and potency. He has now scored 326 runs for the series – 128 clear of the second-placed Ricky Ponting – at the astonishing average of 108.66, and shows no sign of easing the pace. The South Africans have thrown everything at Hughes – bouncers, yorkers, abuse – but to no avail. At 20 years and 98 days, and in only his second full season of first class cricket, Hughes has displayed a temperament and poise far beyond his age and experience, and provided Australia with the top-order spark that eluded Matthew Hayden in his twilight series.Hughes’ offside technique might not be to everyone’s taste – particularly his penchant for backing away to short-pitched bowling – but it has yet to be proven flawed at the junior, first-class or international level. Eighty of his 136 runs in the second innings were scored between first slip and extra cover, and South Africa’s stand-in captain, Mark Boucher, appeared powerless to stem the flow.It was said prior to this series that Ponting was presiding over a crumbling empire, but his band of willing reinforcements are ensuring the walls of Rome are holding fast. The captain, himself, went far to ensuring a series-clinching Australian victory with an imperious innings of 81 and together with Hughes added 164 runs for the second wicket. The once marauding South Africans were in full retreat. As in their golden age, the Australians were merciless in their pursuit of an ailing opponent. Hughes and Ponting propelled the Australian second innings at a spirited pace throughout the middle session, and experienced few problems in negating a surface that, just a day prior, had completely confounded the host team.Smart StatsPhillip Hughes’ century in both innings is the 19th instance of an Australian scoring a hundred in each innings of a Test, and the seventh by an Australian opener. The two previous occasions of an Australian opener achieving this feat were both by Matthew Hayden. The first-wicket partnership put together 55 in the second innings, which followed the 184-run stand in the first. It was only the ninth time since 2000 that an Australian opening pair had a century and half-century partnership in the same match. On the first day, both Australian openers scored hundreds, which was only the 11th instance of both Australian openers scoring centuries in the first innings of a Test. South Africa’s first-innings total of 138 is their third-lowest in Durban, and their worst since their readmission to Test cricket. The highest fourth-innings total in a victory at Kingsmead is 340 for 5, by Australia in 2002. In all fourth innings it’s 654 for 5, by England way back in 1939. Hughes revealed Australia’s ruthless intent in the over after lunch. The left-hander blasted a pair of boundaries that took him past 50 for the third time in as many innings, and Ponting promptly followed with a near-even time half-century. Soon after, Ponting moved past Steve Waugh to claim fourth place on the Test run-scorers’ list with a pull stroke that, for well over a decade, has been his signature stroke. Frenetic and poetic. The only blemish on an otherwise dominant day for Australia were the losses of Simon Katich, Ponting and Michael Hussey, but it mattered little. With a comprehensive win in Johannesburg and a 500-plus lead after three days in Durban, Australia have effectively discounted South Africa as an immediate threat to their Test crown.Australia’s batting fortunes contrasted sharply with those of the South Africans. The hosts began the day hopeful of adding the 14 runs required to pass the follow-on target, after JP Duminy (73) and Steyn survived the closing stages of what, for the South Africans, was a cataclysmic day two.But they would add no further runs to their overnight total of 138, with Steyn and Makhaya Ntini falling in consecutive balls to Siddle, who will commence the second innings on a hat-trick. Ponting, as has become custom, opted against enforcing the follow-on to allow his bowlers some respite and his batsmen the opportunity to compound their opponents’ misery. Judging by the South Africans’ body language at stumps, Ponting has at least proven successful in the latter regard.Seldom has a modern South African batting card read so poorly. In all, nine batsmen were dismissed for single figures – combining for 20 runs in total – and three failed to trouble the scorers at all. Extras (23) were second only to Duminy in terms of runs contributed to the team cause, while Steyn was the third highest-scorer among the batsmen with eight. The last time the South Africans posted a total this modest, Arthur accused the Kanpur curator of “hijacking” his team’s bid to win the 2008 series against India. And not since January, 2007 – when a rampant Shoaib Akhtar flexed his considerable muscles in Port Elizabeth – has a South African side combined for such a low innings score at home.

Celtic must axe McCarthy vs Raith Rovers

Life under Ange Postecoglou for Celtic has been a topsy-turvy state of affairs.

The Hoops began their new era by exiting Europe’s premier competition and struggling to sign new players.

However, life on that front improved pretty rapidly with Celtic sealing their pathway to the Europa League group stages and signing 12 first-team bodies.

Sadly, proceedings at Parkhead have gone downhill again.

On the chalkboard

Celtic began their Europa League group stage campaign just under a week ago with a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Real Betis.

We championed the idea of James McCarthy starting in that game and after Ismaila Soro narrowly escaped a red card before being substituted, that theory looked correct.

The Irishman did eventually earn his first Celtic start in the 1-0 loss to Livingston last Sunday.

It was a bad day at the office for the vast majority of the players who pulled on a Hoops jersey but at the top of the pile was McCarthy.

It’s important not to overreact because he’s not had a full pre-season but the early signs for the midfielder don’t look good.

Reports have emerged claiming that he’s struggling with the pace and intensity of Postecoglou’s methods while it’s also thought that the Australian and his recruitment team weren’t so keen on signing the free agent.

Yet, with Callum McGregor missing due to injury against Livi, he had to play.

McCarthy was incredibly disappointing, conceding possession 15 times despite playing a relatively low-risk style.

He only managed nine passes that took other opponents out of the game, meaning his pass success rate of 86% isn’t actually that eye-catching.

The Republic of Ireland international was too safe with his methods which when they were chasing the match, isn’t ideal.

Furthermore, the £2.7m-rated international had an xG and an xA of zero, capping off a mediocre display at the office.

With that in mind, Postecoglou should consider axing him from the starting XI against Raith Rovers on Thursday evening, that’s despite previously dubbing him “first-class.”

The opposition are from the Championship but it will be important for the manager to integrate McGregor as quickly as possible.

He is set to be fit for the clash on Thursday night and judging by McCarthy’s only start for the club, he doesn’t deserve another one for a long period of time.

AND in other news, Celtic suffer another big injury setback, Postecoglou will be gutted…

West Brom fans react to traffic update

Many West Bromwich Albion supporters have flocked to Twitter to discuss an issue at the Hawthorns.

The Athletic’s West Brom correspondent, Steve Madeley, produced a story about the current traffic problem which has occurred at the home of the Baggies this season.

In the report, Madeley states how some fans have missed games due to being stuck in traffic or are even turning around and heading home after being delayed.

According to West Midlands Police, traffic management around the stadium is not within their jurisdiction and the club also have no authority over the road network.

It is said that the issue is Junction 1 of the M5, which is close to the ground, with both sets of fans using the roundabout when travelling to games.

These West Brom fans have taken to Twitter to react to Madeley’s tweet and have told their own stories and frustrations about the current problem at the ground.

Worcestershire have turned around their dire financial position to record a profit in excess of £350,000, just 12 months after being deep in debt. The club’s home ground of New Road was continually flooded in the dreadfully wet summer of 2007 and match after match was cancelled, delayed or moved to another venue. The end loss to the club amounted to £1.164 million, recording a pre-tax loss of £693,000, but they have turned their fortunes around.”After the floods in 2007 we set about a two-year recovery, we are on track,” Mark Newton, the club’s chief executive, told the BBC. “We have been helped by a lot of people and we are very grateful. We lost some £75,000 at the end of the 2008 season when we had more flooding or the figures could have been even better.”£150,000 was raised by the chairman Martyn Price’s Flood Club, with increasing commercialisation of the club and sponsorship also helping to swell their profits.”Despite the general economic situation, we are optimistic about the year ahead,” Price said. “The broadcast agreement with BSkyB is in place and we have an Ashes summer plus the World Twenty20 to look forward to. The team is in the first division of both League competitions and we hope this and the continuing development of our entertaining young English players will enable us to maintain our membership and spectator numbers.”

Doherty lets Spurs down again vs Rennes

Tottenham Hotspur had to come from behind to salvage a draw in their UEFA Europa Conference League group opener in France on Thursday night.

Nuno Santo’s side opened the scoring early in the first half when Lucas Moura’s cross was turned into his own net by Rennes defender Loic Bade before Flavien Tait curled an effort past Pierluigi Gollini before halftime.

The Ligue 1 outfit then took the lead with less than 20 minutes to go after Gaetan Laborde slotted home from close range but it was surprisingly Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who saved the day as he snuck in a bobbling ball just five minutes later.

Overall, it was another frustrating performance from Spurs and certainly another deject outing in Europe.

Just like the weekend, when the Lilywhites lost their first game of the season 3-0 at Crystal Palace, the opposition not only managed more attempts on goal but also created more chances, per SofaScore.

After keeping three straight clean sheets to kickstart the 2021/22 season, there were also defensive frailties once again and one usual candidate struggled to have much influence on the game.

Matt Doherty underwhelmed during Spurs’ qualifying clash with Pacos de Ferreira, leading to much of the Hotspur faithful slamming his performance – “utterly terrible” and “absolutely useless” were two phrases used to describe him, as relayed by This is Futbol.

If they were watching this game, then those feelings may well be the same.

Starting at right-back over summer signing Emerson Royal, the Northern Irishman failed to repay the faith his former Wolves boss had in him.

As per SofaScore, he was graded at a mediocre 6.7 rating. He was also one of the three most influential players on the ball, recording 81 touches but he did very little in return.

Doherty failed to provide a single accurate cross from three attempts on the right flank, whilst he lost possession 13 times – once every six touches – and failed to record a key pass or dribble.

He also won just three duels throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch, which is rather disappointing.

The £14.4m-rated star, who earns a reported £65k-per-week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, was also rated poorly by football.london’s Alasdair Gold, who handed him a 5/10 and wrote:

‘The service in from the Irishman was so poor throughout but as luck would have it, it was his cross that was deflected into Hojbjerg’s path for the leveller. 5.’

On the above evidence, Doherty would be a very lucky man to feature in Nuno’s starting XI again anytime soon.

AND in other news, Forget Skipp: Spurs could finally replace Dembele with “devastating” £36m-rated beast…

Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden was awful vs Man Utd

Newcastle United were put to the sword by a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Manchester United as they fell to a disappointing 4-1 defeat away at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Steve Bruce’s side couldn’t stop the Red Devils’ recently arrived Portuguese superstar as he scored a brace, and while they did get back on level terms at 1-1 thanks to a goal from Javier Manquillo, it felt almost inevitable that United’s pressure would eventually tell.

While Freddie Woodman had a day to forget in between the sticks as he let in a couple of cheap goals, Isaac Hayden’s performance was equally worrying and concerning.

His cause certainly wasn’t helped by the fact he was thrust into a centre-back role against a United side teeming with superb attacking players, and that unfamiliarity really told with his positioning and sense of marking.

As per Sofascore, he lost the only duel that he was involved in, which is incredibly disappointing for a defender – to put that into context, Joe Willock won a mammoth 13 of the 14 that he contested.

Hayden also made no tackles and just the one interception, while only one of his six attempted long balls found its mark – either defensively or on the ball, the former Arsenal starlet just couldn’t get going or find his footing in the game.

That was reflected in some of the post-match player ratings handed out after the game, with The Shields Gazette’s Miles Starforth giving him a five, and saying: “Recalled in defence after recovering from a knee injury, had a challenging afternoon.”

And for The Independent, Jamie Braidwood also gave him a five, adding: “Lost Ronaldo for United’s opener and was then beaten by the Portuguese for his second goal after the break. Was playing out of position and it showed at times.”

Hayden’s display was incredibly lightweight in a game where he needed to stand strong in the face of intense pressure.

While Woodman will take the brunt of the criticism, and understandably so, Hayden’s performance did nothing to stop Ronaldo or United in their tracks.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have an exciting academy talent in this star…

Saurashtra fight but Karnataka firmly in command

Vinay Kumar’s double-strike at the fag end of the day leaves Saurashtra with a daunting task on a fourth-day pitch at the Brabourne Stadium

The Bulletin by Nagraj Gollapudi at the Brabourne Stadium28-Dec-2008Saurashtra 189 and 10 for 2 (Vinay 2-1) need another 315 runs to beat Karnataka 305 and 208 (Akhil 56, Dravid 52, Jobanputra 5-54, R Jadeja 4-58)

Saurashtra did well to keep Karnataka to 208 in their second innings, but Vinay Kumar’s double-strike at the fag end of the day leaves them with a daunting chase on a fourth-day pitch at the Brabourne Stadium. After their first innings folded ten minutes into the day for 189 – giving Karnataka a lead of 116 – Saurashtra came back to dominate proceedings for most of a day on which 13 wickets fell. Left-arm medium-pacer Sandeep Jobanputra picked his first five-for of the season, supported by first-innings hero Ravindra Jadeja, to keep the opposition in check.Jobanputra, who bowled only eight overs in the previous innings after suffering a minor finger injury, quickly swung the momentum Saurashtra’s way by removing Karnataka’s openers cheaply. A bottom edge from KB Pawan was picked up nicely behind the stumps, and a few overs later Jobanputra delivered the biggest blow when he uprooted Robin Uthappa’s leg stump. Uthappa, who top-scored with 139 in the first innings, read the leg-stump line and moved towards off in an attempt to deflect the ball to the on side.Pressure was now on Rahul Dravid, who had looked unconvincing during his 26 in the first innings. But he took off smoothly without any hiccups second time around. An early straight drive off Jobanputra hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end, but Dravid got it right when he repeated the stroke, placing it to the right of Jayesh Odedra. Another boundary was conceded a couple of balls later when a Dravid back-foot punch beat the man at cover.Thirty runs came in less than seven overs, but the third-wicket stand was broken when CM Gautam paid for complacency. Having charged Odedra, Gautam tried to slash hard a ball too close to his body but the thick outside edge was picked well by the Shitanshu Kotak, standing at widish first-slip.C Raghu, having begun edgily, started timing the ball better post lunch. He deftly opened the face of the bat against Jadeja’s left-arm spin, beating the slip cordon for a couple of fours. Dravid leaned back to strike another four off Kamlesh Makvana, who was easily Saurashtra’s worst bowler – he was unsuccessful in the first innings as well. The move to replace him with Jadeja worked instantly as he separated the Dravid-Raghu pairing of 68, the day’s most productive. Bowling for the first time from the Club House end, Jadeja got lucky when Raghu spooned a simple catch to first slip. Thilak Naidu then disappointed with the bat for the second time in the game, lobbing an equally simple catch to cover.Karnataka’s players might have been on the edge of their seats in the dressing room, but the presence of Dravid, who had nudged his way to a half-century with a push past midwicket, would have been reassuring. However, he betrayed those hopes when miscuing an attempted pull from Jobanputra, the leading edge going straight to mid-off.Throughout his three spells in the day, Jobanputra suffocated batsmen by consistently pitching short of a length and moving the ball away, rarely granting any room. His strategy worked and he was only frustrated towards the end by stodgy resistance from B Akhil and Vinay, who used the long handle to stretch the lead. Most of Akhil’s runs came off the sweep though he got a reprieve when Balkrishna Jadeaja dropped him at long leg, off Makvana, when he was on 33. When Jobanputra returned to replace Jadeja, Akhil pulled him through midwicket and followed it with a glide for another four to move closer to fifty. He duly got it with a single. But trying to hit a fuller one from Jobanputra, he was caught behind; by then Karnataka had regained the control of the game.Set 325 to win, Saurashtra had a forgettable start, losing an opener and a night-watchman in the first over of the chase. Vinay, who had already ruffled Saurashtra on Saturday with his swing, was once again successful in moving the ball at good pace and an erroneous decision by the umpire helped him get the initial breakthrough. On the third ball, Chirag Pathak tried to poke at a straighter delivery and missed. The bat had hit the pads on the downswing and umpire Suresh Shastri gave in to the vociferous appeals. There was nothing wrong with the decision of Makvana, who was caught behind off the over’s final ball.
