– Prefiro enaltecer o grupo, porque a gente vem fazendo boas partidas.

West Ham must reignite Tarkowski interest

West Ham United have conceded 43 goals in 33 Premier League games so far this season, leaving only Leicester City (50) and Manchester United (44) having conceded more in the top half of the league table.

With the next summer transfer window on the horizon, this could give the east London club a chance to strengthen their squad at the back and make them tougher to score against moving forward.

If this ends up being an area GSB look to do some business in once the window opens, one player that could fit the bill for what they need is one that they previously tried to sign but were unsuccessful is James Tarkowski.

Back in the 2020 summer transfer window, the Hammers were heavily linked with a move for the Burnley centre-back but were not able to take him away from Turf Moor.

However, with the Lancashire club having sacked Sean Dyche recently and being in danger of getting relegated, this summer could be the opportune time for the east London club to reignite their interest in the defender and actually work out a deal for him this time around.

Since arriving at Burnley back in 2016, the 29-year-old has made 213 appearances for the Clarets across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and five assists.

To highlight what a capable defender the Englishman is, no other Burnley player has managed to make more tackles, blocks, clearances or interceptions than Tarkowski.

In addition to this, he is currently listed as the highest-rated player at the club with an overall performance rating of 7.03/10 from WhoScored.

With this in mind, it’s easy to see why Burnley journalist Andy Jones described the centre-back as “sensational” last month.

Having also been labelled as being “solid as a rock” for Burnley by Alex James back in 2019, this shows the consistency Tarkowski has delivered in his performances over the years and why the Hammers were after him in 2020.

Moving forward, if Burnley do end up getting relegated to the Championship at the end of this season, GSB should definitely be ready to pounce on a potential deal that would finally see the £70k-per-week machine make a move to the London Stadium.

'People would have accepted 3-1 if there was a little more fight'

In an exclusive interview Ravi Shastri, India’s new team director, talks about what needs to be done for India to bounce back

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Aug-20145:40

Ravi Shastri: “I know I can contribute”

What made you take up this assignment? It was an important time in Indian cricket. When asked I thought about it and then said, “fine”. The state of Indian cricket is such that I know I can contribute. I have never been scared about how tough the job is or how easy the job is. The important thing is the contribution. If I am here today, and at times some forget, it is because of the BCCI. The platform they gave me when I was a junior cricketer to play for my state and then the country. What is your role exactly? My role is to oversee everything. All of them report to me. This is for the ODI series in England. What about Duncan Fletcher. Would he be sidelined?Absolutely not. He stays as the head coach. And these two (Sanjay Bangar and B Arun) will be his assistants.Did you have a chat with MS Dhoni and Fletcher?I spent about two hours with them (on Tuesday). We had a chat about where things are at the moment, how things have to be addressed, and how important communication will be.Were there any reservations you had before taking up the job?I had no reservations about the job. I insisted on the coaching staff I wanted. I went (for domestic Indian coaches) because I felt they can contribute. What were the reasons you felt India failed in the Test series? If you put it down to one word – inexperience. If you calculate the number of Test matches played by the XI as opposed to some of the tours where we fared worse, here we at least won a Test match. We did not win a Test in 1974 (3-0) and were whitewashed on the last tour here with some of the biggest names (in the team). So if you calculate the number of Test caps between this unit and some of the other units that have come (in the past), it is chalk and cheese. On this tour I saw India’s greatest ever overseas win I have seen. I know it because I have never seen a track like that and with this kind of inexperienced side for them to pull it off. Then I also saw some spineless cricket over the last three Tests matches. When you say spineless, what went missing?Spineless means stomach for a fight. People would have accepted 3-1 if there was a little more fight. The conditions what you saw here, barring the first Test, every track had serious juice on it. When I evaluate everything I put it down to inexperience. When they come back to England (next time) they would be better players.People can be judgmental, but we have not played a five-Test match series in a long time. When you play five Test matches in 40 days your fitness gets exposed. But if you are inexperienced it comes to the fore. What does experience do? It builds your mental strength – when you are down, you can still recover. But here when you lack the experience and when you get hammered, or you have two or three innings where you don’t do well, then you go downhill straight. What is the message you want to send to the players? My challenge is for the boys to enjoy themselves, play freely and express themselves. Work hard and use the cricket ground as a vehicle to express yourselves and play aggressively. What was the most disappointing thing for you about the Indian teams’s failure in Test series? My only disappointment was players at times making the same mistake. That disappointed me. Everyone makes a mistake, but you want to try something different. Like [Alastair] Cook. He changed his stance, stood a foot outside the crease. You need to try something different instead of getting out the same way. After the Tests series defeat you went hard on the players in your newspaper column: “Sit back and watch if these glam boys are ready for penance. If they are prepared to plunge their bare hands into the coal of fire and start from scratch.” What exactly did you mean?I was hard on [Cheteshwar] Pujara and [Virat] Kohli specifically because they came here with big reputations. And they have been brought down to earth with their techniques being found out against the moving ball. And there is nothing wrong in that, it has happened to the biggest players. Rahul Dravid in 1999 in Australia – he could not get a run. It has happened to Sunny (Gavaskar) in 1981 in Australia. Now the true test of their (Pujara and Kohli) character will be: how they bounce back. I have absolutely no doubt that not only will they bounce back, they will excel very, very soon.

Australia’s first-choice wicketkeeper, Brad Haddin, will make his long-awaited comeback when he captains the New South Wales Second XI on Monday. Haddin has been sidelined by a tendon injury in his elbow and he has not played since the final of the ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies in May.During that time, Tim Paine has taken over behind the stumps for Australia in all three formats and made an impressive start to his Test career against Pakistan in England. Paine is set to take his Test tally to four matches when he steps out in Mohali and Bangalore in the ongoing tour of India.Haddin was originally selected for Australia’s tour of England, before pulling out due to the elbow problem. He had been hopeful of being fit for the series against India but is now expected to make his Test comeback for the first Ashes Test at the Gabba in late November.Haddin, 32, said during his lay-off that he wanted to continue playing all three forms of the game for the time being but in the future he might consider stepping back from the shorter formats to focus on Test cricket. His immediate return will come in four-day match against the Victorian Second XI at Sydney’s Blacktown Olympic Park starting on Monday.

Monty Panesar completed a match haul of 10 wickets to help Essex to the brink of victory going into the final day of their against Glamorgan at Swansea.Panesar followed up 5 for 50 in the first innings with 5 for 90 in the second. But, despite claiming an extra half-hour on the third evening, Essex failed to take the final two wickets with Glamorgan finishing the third day 237 for 8 after they had been set 348 to win.Essex, who were down two bowlers – Graham Napier and Ryan ten Doeschate with calf and shoulder injuries respectively – were frustrated by an impressive 64 not out from Graham Wagg, who ensured the match went into a fourth day.The visitors began the day on 131 for 5 and were bowled out for 222. Greg Smith, who had been dropped first ball on Saturday evening, went to his second half-century of the season from 88 balls with eight fours and one six. Ten Doeschate struck Dean Cosker for two consecutive sixes over long-on and then pulled him for another six over midwicket to bring up the 100 partnership and his own half-century from 99 balls. After a productive hour for the visitors, Glamorgan grabbed the breakthrough when Smith edged behind attempting to cut a wide one from Jim Allenby. It left Essex 195 for 6, leading by 320.Napier, batting with a runner, only lasted 10 balls, playing on to James Harris. The next wicket occurred in bizarre circumstances when Sajid Mahmood was run out coming back for a second after colliding mid-pitch with ten Doeschate. As well as Mahmood being dismissed, ten Doeschate also retired hurt after facing one more ball, but returned to the middle after Panesar drove a return catch to Harris. And a return catch ended the innings when Allenby took a sharp one-handed effort to remove Matthew Salisbury.Glamorgan were left 20 minutes to survive before lunch but Panesar, who opened the bowling, broke through Jacques Rudolph’s defences as the home side limped to the interval at 13 for 1.After lunch Will Bragg became Panesar’s third victim, sweeping to midwicket before Glamorgan steadied things and from 24 for 2 as Murray Goodwin and Chris Cooke put on 87.Glamorgan had reached 111 for 2 when Panesar trapped Goodwin lbw on the back foot and on the stroke of tea Nick Browne’s leg-spin nearly accounted for Cooke, who edged past first slip to bring up his 50 from 92 balls with nine fours.Only six balls after tea, Panesar bagged his fourth wicket when he had Cooke caught at slip by Jessie Ryder. The hosts then slipped to 144 for six when Allenby glanced Tom Westley straight to the substitute fieldsman Tim Phillips at leg slip and Panesar completed 10 wickets in the game when he trapped Mark Wallace leg before.Glamorgan’s innings went from bad to worse as Andrew Salter was dismissed second ball by Westley, caught at leg slip by Phillips attempting to sweep. There was some resistance shown from Wagg and Harris, who put on 76 in an hour. But, 15 minutes before the scheduled close, Harris went lbw to Greg Smith. Wagg went on to complete his fifty from 74 balls, though, and Essex could not snare the final two wickets despite claiming the extra half-hour.
