Aston Villa must keep hold of John McGinn

The previous summer transfer window was a particularly busy one for Aston Villa, not just in terms of the new players they brought in such as Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia and Danny Ings but also because of the departure of Jack Grealish in a record-breaking transfer to Manchester City for £100m.

Having ended the previous season as Villa’s highest-rated player with an overall rating of 7.56/10 from WhoScored, as well as six goals and 10 assists under his belt, it’s safe to say that Grealish was a key player for the Villans.

Now into their first season without the Englishman, it seems as though the Midlands club could be in danger of losing another critical player when the next summer transfer window opens.

With recent reports claiming that fellow Premier League clubs Manchester United and Liverpool have sent scouts to watch John McGinn with a potential summer transfer move for the midfielder in mind, keeping hold of the Scotland international should be a top priority for the Midlands club.

Since making the move to Villa Park back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Scottish club Hibernian, the 27-year-old has cemented himself as a very important player for the team by racking up 132 appearances across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 21 assists along the way.

Having been described as a player that is “strong as an ox” by Joe Cole, McGinn has proved his importance to Steven Gerrard this season by racking up an overall performance rating of 7.15/10 from WhoScored, making him Villa’s second-highest rated player in the league this season beneath Philippe Coutinho.

Even though his current contract at the Midlands club isn’t set to expire until the summer of 2025, Johan Lange will have to keep an eye on the situation surrounding McGinn, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £70k-per-week according to Salary Sport, especially if any offers for him come forward in the summer.

With that in mind, it could be worth the hierarchy at Villa reassuring the midfield maestro of his importance to the team and what the club’s ambitions are moving forward in terms of breaking into Europe to make sure the £27m-rated star doesn’t get his head turned or else it would be an unforgivable disaster if he left this summer.

South Africa keeping their options open

The draw seems to be the most South Africa can take out of the SSC Test considering their target and the conditions but AB de Villiers says they could still push for a win

Firdose Moonda at the SSC27-Jul-2014

AB de Villiers has not ruled out going for the target if South Africa have wickets in hand at tea on the final day•AFP

If South Africa are still batting at tea on day five, they will go all out to win the Colombo Test. That is the warning AB de Villiers sounded after a day in which momentum was finally infused into a match that has stood in limbo through its middle portions.”If I am coming in after tea and we need six or seven an over I might give it a go,” de Villiers said. “After tea tomorrow if we have wickets in hands that possibility will be there. You’ve got to find the balance between being positive and defensive. If we’ve got a sniff at tea-time tomorrow, we might have a go.”Most of South Africa’s actions in this match have indicated the opposite but de Villiers explained the slow scoring rate in the first innings was merited by circumstance and conditions, not a tactics as Kumar Sangakkara suggested. “They have more spinners, which slowed the game down more,” he said. “The wicket also got drier which made it tough to score.”Sangakkara believed South Africa were “playing a lot for time rather than scoring runs.” He called their approach “negative,” and said they gave Sri Lanka the “opportunities” they needed to take a big first-innings lead. “The more negative you go, the more defensive you are,” he said. “It also tires you out.”South Africa looked ready for a repeat of that at the start of the second innings when they scored just four runs in the first half-hour of their time at the crease. But they were determined that was not how they wanted to play the game and promoted Quinton de Kock up the order to show it. “He is positive player and he bats up the order at home. That was thinking behind letting him at No.3,” de Villiers said. “We would like to keep our options open. With some more hard work tomorrow, you never know.”‘Morkel gives us fear factor’ – de Villiers

Morne Morkel became the sixth South African bowler to collect 200 Test wickets after Dale Steyn, Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis. He reached the milestone in his 58th Test, courtesy a stunning catch from Faf du Plessis. Kithuruwan Vithanage skied one over the covers and du Plessis ran back from point to collect.
Although Morkel has not registered his numbers at the same rate as Steyn and Vernon Philander, his value to the attack cannot be underestimated.
“It’s difficult to put in words what Morne has achieved. He might not have gotten to 200 wickets as quickly as Dale or to 50 as quickly as Vernon but there is a fear factor he puts into batting line-up,” AB de Villiers said. “I play in quite a few teams around the world and I hear what people say about him. They are quite scared of him. He is definitely the worst bowler to face in the nets so I get a bit of it too. And it makes Dale and Vern perform better because of that.”

South Africa may never have made their sentiments public if they had not shown they were capable of batting for long periods of time to save matches. That they came millimeters from turning their heroics against India at the Wanderers into victory showed that a big chase was not beyond them. While the pitch will make a Johannesburg-like effort difficult, de Villiers said South Africa were ready to show what they were capable of even in conditions which may not be suited to their ambitions. “Sri Lanka have played most of the cricket n this Test match and credit to them for this but we are in the fight,” he said. “The way I know our batters, we are not going to give it up. Sri Lanka know what we are capable of. We have had a great tour so far and we want to finish on a high.”A series win will make this South Africa team the first side to win both ODI and Test series in Sri Lanka on the same visit. It will also give the South African Test team their first series win in Sri Lanka in 21 years and will put them back on top of the Test rankings. That can all be achieved by simply hanging on for the draw but de Villiers said a win would make it that much sweeter.”It will mean everything to us,” he said. “It’s what we want to be about. We don’t want to be winning and losing. We want to be consistent. We would hate to lose. We’re going to come here positive.”

Muralitharan joins Australia coaching staff

Australia have made a dramatic move in their attempts to improve their spin credentials in Asian conditions, hiring Muttiah Muralitharan as a coaching consultant for this year’s Test series against Pakistan in the UAE

Brydon Coverdale18-Jun-20143:58

Coverdale: ‘Majority of Australians quite like Murali’

Australia have made a dramatic move in their attempts to improve their spin credentials in Asian conditions, hiring Muttiah Muralitharan as a coaching consultant for this year’s Test series against Pakistan in the UAE. And while Muralitharan has no intention of turning Nathan Lyon into a master of the doosra, he is already helping Lyon add a carrom ball to his arsenal. The two men have been working together in Sri Lanka this week and Muralitharan said he was confident Lyon would be ready to deliver the carrom ball to Pakistan’s batsmen in the Test series in October. But the appointment of Muralitharan for the short-term role is not only about helping Lyon but also equipping Australia’s batsmen to face Saeed Ajmal and the Pakistan spinners.Australia’s most recent Test tour in Asia was their disastrous campaign in India early last year, when they lost 4-0 and struggled to handle to R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in turning conditions. The penetration of their own spinners was also a weakness throughout the tour, although it was not helped by Lyon being dropped mid-series and replaced by Glenn Maxwell and Xavier Doherty.Lyon returned for the final Test in Delhi and picked up nine wickets for the match, and since then has moved on to have 112 victims at 32.99 from his 33 Test appearances. Muralitharan said Lyon was clearly Australia’s best spin option and he expected him to be able to deliver the occasional carrom ball in the UAE this year before mastering it in years to come.”In a country like Australia, you don’t need many spinners, you need to get the right one,” Muralitharan said. “I think Nathan Lyon is the answer, for any format. He spins the ball, he is confident, he has done well and taken more than 100 wickets in Test cricket. Australia has to persevere with him and then fill the backups.”The doosra is very difficult to teach. We are trying something else, like a carrom ball … He is a finger-spinner, I am a wrist-spinner. For a wrist-spinner to change the wrist position is easy. But for a finger-spinner to change the wrist position to bowl the doosra is harder. So it would be difficult.”He’s already starting to bowl the carrom ball. So that is the easiest way for the finger-spinners to learn … I think he’ll be ready. He will bowl a few balls in the UAE and he will master it in years to come.”Muralitharan has been working not only with Lyon but also several of Australia’s emerging spinners in Sri Lanka this week, including James Muirhead and Clive Rose. But his role in the UAE will also include bowling to Australia’s batsmen in the nets in an attempt to get them accustomed to the style of Ajmal, who is the highest-ranked spinner on the ICC’s bowling rankings and will enjoy the conditions greatly.”I’m not a good batsman so I can’t give many tips to batsmen, but the thing I can do is that I’m still good enough to bowl to the batsmen,” Muralitharan said. “Myself and Ajmal are a little bit similar. We are bowling doosras and offspin, so they might learn from batting in the nets, rather than me trying to teach them. I can’t teach batting.”Muralitharan said he was confident he would have the support of the vast majority of Australian cricket fans despite his history with the country, which was dominated by his being no-balled for throwing in the 1995 Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. His relationship with Australia has improved significantly and he was one of the most popular overseas players in the BBL during his time with the Melbourne Renegades. His appointment has continued the push by coach Darren Lehmann to have specialists assist the team at strategic times, as when Shane Warne provided spin advice in South Africa this year.”Muttiah Muralitharan is a true great of the game and his involvement with the Australian team will bring enormous benefits,” Lehmann said. “He really understands the conditions we’ll face and will be able to impart a great amount of knowledge. Not only will he help guide our spinners during that tour, but he will also work with our batsmen to help them prepare to play Pakistan’s dangerous spin bowlers.”As we’ve shown in recent times we’ll bring in dedicated skill-specific coaching consultants to our support staff as and when we see fit. That means having more regular support from technical experts to help work on specific areas of performance.”Most recently we had Shane Warne join us in South Africa, and throughout the Australian summer we had a range of former Australian players around the team during the Test series to help impart specialist knowledge. This time around we are fortunate enough to have Muttiah work with us.”

Journalist shares Broja to Saints update

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Alex Crook of talkSPORT has made a transfer claim involving Southampton as they eye a permanent deal for Chelsea loanee Armando Broja.

The Lowdown: Saints bid mooted…

Over the January window, some reliable sources claimed that CEO and transfer chief Martin Semmens was plotting a bid to sign Broja permanently near the end of last month.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-latest-developments/” title=”Southampton latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, according to noted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Southampton were preparing an offer for the Albania international who has really impressed on his temporary St. Mary’s stint.

However, while that did not appear to come to fruition, talkSPORT reporter Crook has made an interesting claim on potential talks in the next two months.

The Latest: talkSPORT reporter makes claim…

Speaking to GMS, the reporter claims talks could ‘really’ accelerate ‘come the end of February, middle of March’ if Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are well clear of the drop zone by that point.

“If come the end of February, middle of March, Saints are safe from relegation, then talks will really ramp up.” he explained.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Signing the 20-year-old indefinitely should come as one of Semmens’ top summer priorities alongside the possible addition of soon-to-be free agent Sam Johnstone between the sticks.

Broja’s brilliance was perhaps best summed up by his instinctive near post finish in Southampton’s 3-2 victory away to Spurs on Wednesday evening and highlights just how crucial of a presence he is going forward.

A imposing physical striker at 6 foot 3, the Saints attacker will arguably only get better and the south coast side must do all they can to keep him for Hasenhutll, especially since Chelsea reportedly value him at around £20 million.

Sky pundit Micah Richards is a fan, calling him ‘quality’ recently (via football.london), and Semmens would be remiss if he didn’t make a serious effort.

Saha, Vohra star as Kings XI go top

Kings XI Punjab were pushed to the top of the table thanks to a belligerent 91-run stand between Wriddhiman Saha and Manan Vohra

The Report by Alagappan Muthu14-May-20145:41

Huddle: Domestic players complete the Punjab side

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe prospect of facing Kings XI Punjab means extensive research on Glenn Maxwell. Perhaps a few hours spent decoding David Miller. But the winning push, in Hyderabad, came from two men who fly well under the radar. Wriddhiman Saha, usually charged with steadying a top-order wobble, exploded to make 54 off 26 and Manan Vohra, who was inked into the XI for the first time this season, made 47 off 20. Sunrisers Hyderabad had amassed 205 but came in second best. The Powerplay provides a crucial opportunity when chasing a big total. Dale Steyn and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, though, aren’t the most straightforward bowlers to cart around. But that was what happened and the 86 for 1 that Saha and Vohra drove Kings XI to missed out on the overall IPL record for most runs in the first six overs by just one run.Kings XI needed the audacious foundation, though. Only 24 runs came between the 13th and 17th overs. Sunrisers managed to keep Maxwell quiet for an over and dismissed him in the next. Miller wasn’t managing his usual pace and Sunrisers’ attack is well versed in flummoxing strong batting line-ups. Steyn was enlisted with the 18th over, but his extra pace proved just what George Bailey needed to hike his team back to the top of the table.Wriddhiman Saha reached his half-century in 22 balls•BCCI

It was an unmitigated assault, and each shot carried the imprint of the dressing room’s backing. Vohra faced eight balls from Steyn and smashed 20 runs, including two thumping sixes over midwicket. Saha deposited the second ball he faced from the South African quick into the same region with consummate authority. Both players were unafraid to go aerial and were quite efficient when they did. The result was Steyn, Sunrisers best hope, recorded his worst T20 figures – 0 for 51.Sunrisers would rue not converting the opportunities they created – Bailey was absently loitering out of his crease in the 17th over, worried about a leg before appeal when Karn Sharma missed a run-out. Next ball, he hoisted a contentious chance to David Warner at long-off, but replays did not offer conclusive evidence of the catch being cleanly taken.Shikhar Dhawan was confident of his top orders’s aptitude at the toss. His concerns lay with the middle order and their ability to accelerate. Those were laid to rest courtesy a Naman Ojha-inspired bludgeoning. A strong bottom hand dominated most of his shots, so much that drives through the cover region seemed shoveled. Sunrisers have been searching for an Indian batsman to support their big-name top order and his 79 off 36 has given a strong message. He was brutal against the spinners and Sandeep Sharma’s medium pace enabled him to drive Sunrisers past the 200-mark. The 26 runs that came in the 19th over meant Sandeep’s 1 for 65 became the joint second worst figures in IPL.The early goings were markedly subdued though, with Dhawan stumbling around for form. He was leaping down the track only to find the inside edge. When he stayed deep in his crease, he couldn’t pierce the gap on the off side. The fifth over provided ample relief and more pertinently, restored Dhawan’s fluency. Sandeep’s indiscipline – he offered two free hits – was punished with a four and a six. Having succumbed to the 30s on four previous occasions, he looked set to become the first Sunrisers captain to make a half-century but a flick off the hips found short fine leg.David Warner strode in at No. 4 and ensured the foundation laid by the openers was taken advantage of. He contributed 44 to an 81-run stand for the third wicket that built a total fit to challenge most teams. But Kings XI’s batting might was ruthlessly effective.
