Doherty lets Spurs down again vs Rennes

Tottenham Hotspur had to come from behind to salvage a draw in their UEFA Europa Conference League group opener in France on Thursday night.

Nuno Santo’s side opened the scoring early in the first half when Lucas Moura’s cross was turned into his own net by Rennes defender Loic Bade before Flavien Tait curled an effort past Pierluigi Gollini before halftime.

The Ligue 1 outfit then took the lead with less than 20 minutes to go after Gaetan Laborde slotted home from close range but it was surprisingly Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who saved the day as he snuck in a bobbling ball just five minutes later.

Overall, it was another frustrating performance from Spurs and certainly another deject outing in Europe.

Just like the weekend, when the Lilywhites lost their first game of the season 3-0 at Crystal Palace, the opposition not only managed more attempts on goal but also created more chances, per SofaScore.

After keeping three straight clean sheets to kickstart the 2021/22 season, there were also defensive frailties once again and one usual candidate struggled to have much influence on the game.

Matt Doherty underwhelmed during Spurs’ qualifying clash with Pacos de Ferreira, leading to much of the Hotspur faithful slamming his performance – “utterly terrible” and “absolutely useless” were two phrases used to describe him, as relayed by This is Futbol.

If they were watching this game, then those feelings may well be the same.

Starting at right-back over summer signing Emerson Royal, the Northern Irishman failed to repay the faith his former Wolves boss had in him.

As per SofaScore, he was graded at a mediocre 6.7 rating. He was also one of the three most influential players on the ball, recording 81 touches but he did very little in return.

Doherty failed to provide a single accurate cross from three attempts on the right flank, whilst he lost possession 13 times – once every six touches – and failed to record a key pass or dribble.

He also won just three duels throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch, which is rather disappointing.

The £14.4m-rated star, who earns a reported £65k-per-week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, was also rated poorly by football.london’s Alasdair Gold, who handed him a 5/10 and wrote:

‘The service in from the Irishman was so poor throughout but as luck would have it, it was his cross that was deflected into Hojbjerg’s path for the leveller. 5.’

On the above evidence, Doherty would be a very lucky man to feature in Nuno’s starting XI again anytime soon.

AND in other news, Forget Skipp: Spurs could finally replace Dembele with “devastating” £36m-rated beast…

Dominant Sri Lanka make it 4-1

South Africa suffered a fifth successive sub-standard batting performance in Sri Lanka to concede the final match in the series – a dead rubber – to opposition who have shown their superiority

The Report by Firdose Moonda31-Jul-2013

South Africa suffered a fifth successive sub-standard batting performance in Sri Lanka to concede the final match in the series – a dead rubber – to opposition who have shown their superiority. Throughout the 12-day contest, Sri Lanka batted with more authority and bowled with more intent and just to emphasise that, they did both even better today despite resting three senior players.Tillakaratne Dilshan followed up his century in the previous match with 99 and shared in a second-wicket stand of 163 with Lahiru Thirimanne who found confidence with a half-century, while Kumar Sangakkara racked up milestones. He overtook Misbah-ul-Haq as the leading run-scorer in ODIs this year and become the top-scorer for Sri Lanka in a bilateral series with 372 runs. With all those accolades, his best mate, Mahela Jayawardene was hardly missed.Neither was Sri Lanka’s marquee fast bowler, Lasith Malinga, or leading spinner Rangana Herath. Their replacements, Suranga Lakmal and Sachithra Senanayake, did the damage with five wickets between them to ensure even the flicker of a challenge South Africa posed was suffocated before it find any oxygen.Although South Africa have scored more runs in each innings as this series wore on, they were always unlikely to chase down a score of 300-plus. They have a lethargic bowling performance and indifferent showing in the field to thank for being asked to do that.Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe started well with probing lines outside offstump and had early success. They kept Sri Lanka’s scoring rate under four an over and Morkel had Kusal Perera out when the opener bottom-edged to Quinton de Kock. What South Africa should have used as an opening, Sri Lanka grabbed onto as an opportunity. They moved Thirimanne up the order and he responded by building steadily alongside Dilshan. They pair gave themselves time against South Africa’s ineffectual spin duo so that when Morkel was brought back, he posed little threat. Dilshan reached his half-century with a backfoot drive off him, while Thrimanne’s came with a single off Phangiso. By the halfway mark, they were consistently scoring more than four runs an over and had laid enough foundation to up the aggression. And they did. The very next over, Thirimanne charged Phangiso and drove Morkel with confidence. He could have been stumped for 62 but Quinton de Kock missed the chance. It only cost six runs before JP Duminy took a tumbling catch to see Thirimanne out but illustrated a wider South African problem.Their fielding was not up to scratch, they didn’t back up enough, their throws were wayward and de Villiers’ communication in changing his fields was almost non-existent. All this while Sangakkara arrived and smoked Duminy back over his head and hit Morkel of all of his lengths. The three fours that came in the over where off a good length ball, a full one and a short one.Sangakkara missed out on a century the last time he batted with Dilshan but this time it was Dilshan’s turn to suffer that fate. He marched into the 90s with an authoritative pull and lingered on 99 for three balls before he was bowled by a McLaren slower ball.In celebration of his wicket, South Africa seemed to forget all their plans. Tsotsobe reverted back to short balls and Morkel could not find any workable line or length. His figures were the most expensive of his career. Mathews let loose and Thisara Perera had licence to go wild but it was Sangakkara’s presence that made a score over 300 possible. He smacked 49 runs on the on-side and helped himself to extravagant shots like scoops over de Kock’s head. He was largely responsible for the addition of 52 runs in the last five overs and for South Africa’s mountain being too high. They started gallantly, with de Kock showing his promise with powerful cuts, and 32 runs scored off the first five overs. He remained loose outside the offstump and when he left a gap between bat and pad against Senanayake, he was bowled. The 35 he put on with Hashim Amla was South Africa’s highest opening stand of the series.Amla and Duminy put on 25 before Amla also failed to read Senanayake and was plumb lbw. Dumimy padded up to Dilshan and Faf du Plessis’ lean run grew longer when was caught. At 69 for 4, South Africa were only headed one way.De Villiers scored a-run-a-ball 51 but was caught at point on his first attempt to lash out. South Africa they were eventually put out of their misery in the 44th over to hand Sri Lanka a 4-1 win and leave themselves with more questions than answers about the rebuilding of their one-day unit.

James Tomlinson finished with figures of 5 for 44 to guide Hampshire totheir second County Championship win of the season as they beatGlamorgan by 43 runs in a close-fought game in Cardiff. After leaving Glamorgan 215 to win in 90 overs, Tomlinson claimed the first fourwickets to fall as the home side subsided to 58 for 5. Although Murray Goodwin and Mark Wallace put on 80 for the sixth wicket the damage had been done.At the start of the day Marcus North completed his five-wicket haul asGlamorgan wrapped up the Hampshire innings in the space of 22 balls. Hampshire were only able to add six more runs to their overnight total of 173for nine before Danny Briggs gave a bat-pad catch to Gareth Rees at short-leg. That gave North only his third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket givinghim figures of 5 for 30 from 15.1 overs.Glamorgan made a dreadful start to their victory quest being reduced to 42 for3 inside 10 overs by Tomlinson. He had Ben Wright and Stewart Walters both caught in the slips by LiamDawson and Sean Ervine respectively. And Tomlinson claimed his third wicket to have first innings century-maker Reescaught at second slip.Left-armer Tomlinson made it four straight victims when he trapped North lbw asthe home side slipped to 55 for four. Before lunch David Balcombe chipped in with the fifth wicket when Jim Allenby edged to Dawson at slip. But either side of lunch Goodwin and Wallace launched their impressiverecovery, steering them from 64 for 5 at the break, still 157 runs adrift of their victorytarget.Glamorgan were looking comfortable until Wallace was trapped leg beforehalf-forward to give Tomlinson his fifth wicket to leave the hosts 138for six at tea. At that stage Glamorgan needed 83 to win from 35.3 overs with Goodwin stillthere on 38 not out.Though Goodwin lost Dean Cosker to a leg-side stumping off Danny Briggs he wentto his 50 from 156 balls with six fours despite being rapped on the thumb byTomlinson when he was 39.Michael Hogan made a breezy 18, including 11 off a Briggs over, before he wascaught trying to clear Neil McKenzie at mid-off off Sohail Tanvir. It leftGlamorgan on 172 – needing a further 49 to win.And an over later Will Owen played on to Briggs making it 177 for 9, whileMike Reed lasted only two balls as Hampshire wrapped up the win with 22 oversremaining.

Chawaguta appears out of his depth

Zimbabwe’s performances in the 5-0 series defeat against Sri Lanka have raised a number of issues, the most pressing being the role of Walter Chawaguta

Zimbabwe’s performances in the 5-0 series defeat against Sri Lanka have raised a number of issues, the most pressing being the role of Walter Chawaguta.Chawaguta was picked as coach in August when the board decided not to renew Robin Brown’s contract. While he had some track record in Under-19 cricket and as an assistant to previous incumbents, Chawaguta’s pedigree to look after an international side was almost non-existent, and his name unknown outside the small circle of Zimbabwe cricket.Critics were quick to suggest his appointment owed more to his willingness to tow the party line on selection policy than any technical brilliance. Those suspicions were reinforced by the fact he came from Takashinga, the club with close links to Zanu-PF and one treated with great favour by those running Zimbabwe cricket. What’s more, his experience as a player was even less compelling than his coaching credentials.Although he has not had much chance to prove himself, what we have seen so far has hardly been inspirational. He has kept his bosses happy, but at a cost. “As an individual, he’s a decent person,” one close observer of the national team said. “Humility used to be a feature too, but the new-found status seem to have eroded that away. But he himself would be the first to admit, if he were to be honest, that he was not the right man for the job on his appointment.”While Chawaguta’s focus should be on the players, many fear that most decisions are out of his control. Those “influential in fast-tracking his appointment” are pulling the strings as one local journalist said, adding: “And they are quite strong forces in the context of bulldozing key decisions.”His public utterances have hardly been inspirational, largely lacking in substance and seemingly designed to ensure he avoids blame for the team’s failings. This is in complete contrast to his predecessor, Brown, who shielded his charges from much of the flak. When Zimbabwe tied with Canada in a Twenty20 game and then lost an ODI to Kenya, Chawaguta sought to concentrate on a victory over Ireland, treating it with all the importance of a victory over a far greater opponent. It showed a complete detachment from reality.Brown’s problem throughout his brief tenure was that he refused to be beholden to the wishes of an increasingly politicised board. He was privately lambasted for not picking more black players, regardless of ability, but he stood up to his critics on cricketing grounds. In the end, he paid with his job. The right team according to the bosses was more important than the best team. Enter Chawaguta.Brown’s record was hardly anything to shout about. He won once in the 12 ODIs during his year in charge; Chawaguta has already one win from his seven. But, the bare statistics hide the reality. All Brown’s opponents were Full Member countries – Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies – and the win came against West Indies. Chawaguta’s success was against Ireland, and he has also managed a loss to Kenya.Brown was pitch-side when Zimbabwe beat Australia in the World Twenty20 in September 2007, a result which gave the game a tremendous fillip, and his no-nonsense approach won over a young squad and gave them belief in themselves. Kevin Curran, his predecessor, had often seemed to abandon thoughts of winning to try to ensure the scale of the defeats were limited; Brown told his players they should win or perish trying. He persuaded them, in some cases for the first time, they were good enough to compete. In the Sri Lanka series, Chawaguta has proved unable to give his young charges the lead they desperately needed. This was best highlighted in the last ODI. When the situation was crying out for calm heads and careful batting, Zimbabwe’s top order approached the innings as if it was a rain-shortened Twenty20 game. Either Chawaguta had given orders and they had been ignored, or he had completely misread the situation. In the end, it cost them the game.Chawaguta’s lack of experience comes out when the dressing-room door is shut. One insider said: “In the national side, the system is militant. He in nature appears quiet and reserved, but can be notoriously candid behind closed doors if things are not going the team’s way. He and team manager Givemore Makoni, form a fearsome pair. The players’ response to the regime is more out of fear than respect.”There is a clear message in Chawaguta’s appointment. The cricket is of secondary importance to the back-room politicking. While that remains, the only losers will be the young players who the board is happy to select, match in, match out, to face the music. Only when that changes will there be any real hope for Zimbabwe cricket.
