Burns earns draw to lighten Surrey gloom

Surrey awoke from the inexplicably ghastly nightmare of losing seven first-innings wickets for 12 runs in 11 overs to secure the draw that at least buys them a bit of breathing space. But with only Derbyshire below them and the halfway stage of the Championship programme almost reached, it is hard to predict anything other than a fight against relegation.Signings continue to be made. Australia’s Glenn Maxwell will arrive for at least part of the T20 programme while Surrey expect to confirm the capture of South Africa’s JP Duminy for the last two months of the four-day campaign early next week. What they need above all else, though, is a Championship victory after seven matches without success. That spirit-lifting outcome was an impossibility here once Warwickshire ploughed on beyond 600. And but for a more disciplined second-innings effort, built around Rory Burns’ three-hour occupation, a desperately embarrassing defeat might have ensued. As it was, the pitch proved simply too bland for Warwickshire to pressurise Surrey into another implosion. The defending champions were further hampered by the absence of fast bowler Chris Wright, who sat out the final day with a flu-like illness, and they could also point to the potentially crucial loss of 37 overs to rain on the third morning. But unlike Surrey, who were left thanking the heavens for small mercies, the visitors can rightly claim to have taken a good step forward at Woodbridge Road. Their injury list is starting to shorten, with opener Ian Westwood and allrounder Keith Barker not only returning to action here but also making excellent contributions.Even better, Warwickshire have produced just the batting response coach Dougie Brown wanted after they were routed for 128 and 140, by Yorkshire, on their last outing. Retaining the title looks a tall order right now (they have only one victory from seven matches, compared to four at the same stage last season) but it is not an impossible task by any means. The Bears were growling all right this morning, having stunned Surrey through the previous evening’s Boyd Rankin-inspired burst. And it took them less than half an hour to claim the final three wickets, which left the hosts to follow-on an almighty 357 behind.Chris Tremlett, defending tentatively on the crease, edged Rankin before Ricky Ponting – deciding he might as well go on the offensive – and Jade Dernbach perished to Barker’s left-arm quicks. On a pitch which had yielded 863 runs for the first 11 wickets, Surrey’s last seven had gone down for an undistinguished dozen. No wonder their followers were less than happy and no doubt wishing that next month’s forum could be brought forward a few weeks. At least there was a bit of cheer for the faithful second time around. With nothing more than slow turn to encourage spinners Jeetan Patel and Ateeq Javid, Warwickshire could only prod and probe for weaknesses during lengthy spells. It was Rikki Clarke, though, who denied opener Burns what would have been a worthy century, finding the outside edge with a real ‘effort’ ball just before tea. And when Patel claimed a second victim during the early stages of the final session, via Zander de Bruyn’s bat-pad catch to silly point, the visitors rightly extended their victory bid well into the final hour. There was no shifting Ponting a second time, however, and he at least is earning his corn.As for that elusive first win, Surrey’s director of cricket, Chris Adams, insisted: “We’ve competed in every game without managing to pull it together with both bat and ball for an entire four days. But I don’t think we are far away. I feel we are really close to bringing it together and putting in that performance.”

James Tomlinson finished with figures of 5 for 44 to guide Hampshire totheir second County Championship win of the season as they beatGlamorgan by 43 runs in a close-fought game in Cardiff. After leaving Glamorgan 215 to win in 90 overs, Tomlinson claimed the first fourwickets to fall as the home side subsided to 58 for 5. Although Murray Goodwin and Mark Wallace put on 80 for the sixth wicket the damage had been done.At the start of the day Marcus North completed his five-wicket haul asGlamorgan wrapped up the Hampshire innings in the space of 22 balls. Hampshire were only able to add six more runs to their overnight total of 173for nine before Danny Briggs gave a bat-pad catch to Gareth Rees at short-leg. That gave North only his third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket givinghim figures of 5 for 30 from 15.1 overs.Glamorgan made a dreadful start to their victory quest being reduced to 42 for3 inside 10 overs by Tomlinson. He had Ben Wright and Stewart Walters both caught in the slips by LiamDawson and Sean Ervine respectively. And Tomlinson claimed his third wicket to have first innings century-maker Reescaught at second slip.Left-armer Tomlinson made it four straight victims when he trapped North lbw asthe home side slipped to 55 for four. Before lunch David Balcombe chipped in with the fifth wicket when Jim Allenby edged to Dawson at slip. But either side of lunch Goodwin and Wallace launched their impressiverecovery, steering them from 64 for 5 at the break, still 157 runs adrift of their victorytarget.Glamorgan were looking comfortable until Wallace was trapped leg beforehalf-forward to give Tomlinson his fifth wicket to leave the hosts 138for six at tea. At that stage Glamorgan needed 83 to win from 35.3 overs with Goodwin stillthere on 38 not out.Though Goodwin lost Dean Cosker to a leg-side stumping off Danny Briggs he wentto his 50 from 156 balls with six fours despite being rapped on the thumb byTomlinson when he was 39.Michael Hogan made a breezy 18, including 11 off a Briggs over, before he wascaught trying to clear Neil McKenzie at mid-off off Sohail Tanvir. It leftGlamorgan on 172 – needing a further 49 to win.And an over later Will Owen played on to Briggs making it 177 for 9, whileMike Reed lasted only two balls as Hampshire wrapped up the win with 22 oversremaining.

Dominant Sri Lanka make it 4-1

South Africa suffered a fifth successive sub-standard batting performance in Sri Lanka to concede the final match in the series – a dead rubber – to opposition who have shown their superiority

South Africa suffered a fifth successive sub-standard batting performance in Sri Lanka to concede the final match in the series – a dead rubber – to opposition who have shown their superiority. Throughout the 12-day contest, Sri Lanka batted with more authority and bowled with more intent and just to emphasise that, they did both even better today despite resting three senior players.Tillakaratne Dilshan followed up his century in the previous match with 99 and shared in a second-wicket stand of 163 with Lahiru Thirimanne who found confidence with a half-century, while Kumar Sangakkara racked up milestones. He overtook Misbah-ul-Haq as the leading run-scorer in ODIs this year and become the top-scorer for Sri Lanka in a bilateral series with 372 runs. With all those accolades, his best mate, Mahela Jayawardene was hardly missed.Neither was Sri Lanka’s marquee fast bowler, Lasith Malinga, or leading spinner Rangana Herath. Their replacements, Suranga Lakmal and Sachithra Senanayake, did the damage with five wickets between them to ensure even the flicker of a challenge South Africa posed was suffocated before it find any oxygen.Although South Africa have scored more runs in each innings as this series wore on, they were always unlikely to chase down a score of 300-plus. They have a lethargic bowling performance and indifferent showing in the field to thank for being asked to do that.Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe started well with probing lines outside offstump and had early success. They kept Sri Lanka’s scoring rate under four an over and Morkel had Kusal Perera out when the opener bottom-edged to Quinton de Kock. What South Africa should have used as an opening, Sri Lanka grabbed onto as an opportunity. They moved Thirimanne up the order and he responded by building steadily alongside Dilshan. They pair gave themselves time against South Africa’s ineffectual spin duo so that when Morkel was brought back, he posed little threat. Dilshan reached his half-century with a backfoot drive off him, while Thrimanne’s came with a single off Phangiso. By the halfway mark, they were consistently scoring more than four runs an over and had laid enough foundation to up the aggression. And they did. The very next over, Thirimanne charged Phangiso and drove Morkel with confidence. He could have been stumped for 62 but Quinton de Kock missed the chance. It only cost six runs before JP Duminy took a tumbling catch to see Thirimanne out but illustrated a wider South African problem.Their fielding was not up to scratch, they didn’t back up enough, their throws were wayward and de Villiers’ communication in changing his fields was almost non-existent. All this while Sangakkara arrived and smoked Duminy back over his head and hit Morkel of all of his lengths. The three fours that came in the over where off a good length ball, a full one and a short one.Sangakkara missed out on a century the last time he batted with Dilshan but this time it was Dilshan’s turn to suffer that fate. He marched into the 90s with an authoritative pull and lingered on 99 for three balls before he was bowled by a McLaren slower ball.In celebration of his wicket, South Africa seemed to forget all their plans. Tsotsobe reverted back to short balls and Morkel could not find any workable line or length. His figures were the most expensive of his career. Mathews let loose and Thisara Perera had licence to go wild but it was Sangakkara’s presence that made a score over 300 possible. He smacked 49 runs on the on-side and helped himself to extravagant shots like scoops over de Kock’s head. He was largely responsible for the addition of 52 runs in the last five overs and for South Africa’s mountain being too high. They started gallantly, with de Kock showing his promise with powerful cuts, and 32 runs scored off the first five overs. He remained loose outside the offstump and when he left a gap between bat and pad against Senanayake, he was bowled. The 35 he put on with Hashim Amla was South Africa’s highest opening stand of the series.Amla and Duminy put on 25 before Amla also failed to read Senanayake and was plumb lbw. Dumimy padded up to Dilshan and Faf du Plessis’ lean run grew longer when was caught. At 69 for 4, South Africa were only headed one way.De Villiers scored a-run-a-ball 51 but was caught at point on his first attempt to lash out. South Africa they were eventually put out of their misery in the 44th over to hand Sri Lanka a 4-1 win and leave themselves with more questions than answers about the rebuilding of their one-day unit.

Hafeez helps Pakistan draw level

Mohammad Hafeez led the way with an attacking, unbeaten 136 to lift Pakistan to 299, and although Zimbabwe had their moments in the chase, they failed to stretch Pakistan over a sustained period in the second ODI

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran29-Aug-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMohammad Hafeez scored his second century in Harare•AFP

With the series at stake, Pakistan hit back strongly by posting a total well beyond Zimbabwe’s reach, thereby giving the final match greater context. Mohammad Hafeez led the way with an attacking, unbeaten 136 to lift Pakistan to 299, and although Zimbabwe had their moments in the chase, they failed to stretch Pakistan over a sustained period. A clump of wickets towards the end widened the gap between the two sides, as the margin of victory suggested. Both sides, while batting, were removed from their comfort zones. Pakistan didn’t have the safety net of a steady Misbah-ul-Haq innings for the other batsmen to bat around. A rare failure from Misbah gave Hafeez the chance to step up and guide the innings. Zimbabwe, for a change didn’t have the luxury of a solid opening stand in the face of a daunting total, and the middle order couldn’t cover the slack. Pakistan, though, responded better to the challenge.Put in to bat, Pakistan had a better idea of the kind the score needed to intimidate a confident Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe were guilty of dropping catches in the first ODI but those let-offs, fortunately, didn’t cost them in the end. While they were relatively better today, one lapse cost them plenty of runs. When on 30, Hafeez went for the slog sweep but as the ball dipped towards deep square leg, Brian Vitori was a touch too late on the dive. He couldn’t hang on and Zimbabwe were made to rue the missed chance.Hafeez’s driving, flicking and defense against the seamers was solid and he used his feet against Prosper Utseya, lofting two sixes over long-on. He launched Elton Chigumbura over the same region as he progressed to his fifty off 65 balls. Following Misbah’s departure – he limped to 3 off 23 balls – Pakistan had lost all their experienced batsmen, but Umar Amin stepped up to give Hafeez the support he needed. Amin looked busy at the crease, trying to push the singles and attempting the odd slog, looking on nervously at his senior partner who urged him to play straighter.Amin opened up at the start of the batting Powerplay, taken in the 36th over, clipping Utseya wide of midwicket and then launching him over cover the next ball. He found the gaps with ease through the off side and reached his maiden fifty in ODIs off just 61 balls. Pakistan smashed 43 in the Powerplay without losing a wicket, setting the platform for their late-innings acceleration.Amin was eventually run-out from a direct hit by Tendai Chatara, but not before adding a valuable 129 with Hafeez. Hafeez made sure his side didn’t lose the initiative, like they did on Tuesday with a collapse, batting positively and finding the gaps. He had all but bettered his highest ODI score (139*), made on the same ground two years ago. A blazing cameo from Shahid Afridi took Pakistan to the doorstep of 300.Hamilton Masakadza and Vusi Sibanda had, until this game, produced opening stands of 53, 50 and 107 so it was a relief for Pakistan that the openers disbanded early in the third over. Masakadza found early momentum with some powerful boundaries off Mohammad Irfan before he was beaten for pace by Junaid Khan, losing his off stump. Much depended on Brendan Taylor to lead the way. He and Sean Williams weren’t afraid to take on the spinners, reverse sweeping them regularly. They targeted Pakistan’s main bowler, Saeed Ajmal, in his first over, playing the conventional and reverse sweeps to give the chase some momentum.Taylor kept Zimbabwe’s hopes alive with a positive fifty – his first in 13 innings – and it got to the stage where Pakistan were in need of a breakthrough. Ajmal provided that when he beat an advancing Williams, getting him stumped. Taylor had added 70 with Williams and 65 with Malcolm Waller, but all along they failed to keep with the rising asking rate. The slide started towards the end of the batting Powerplay – taken after 35 overs – when Taylor top-edged a sweep off Ajmal, only to be caught one-handed by the 7ft 1″ Irfan. Any other fielder, it would have been a boundary. Zimbabwe lost three wickets for one run, as Junaid ran through the lower order. Zimbabwe were rolled over with more than seven overs to spare. The lack of a match-turning partnership hurt them in the end.*1651 GMT, August 29: The article had said “Pakistan lost three wickets for one run, as Junaid ran through the lower order”. This has been corrected.
