Wolves will regret not signing Ryan Kent

Wolverhampton Wanderers have started their Premier League campaign with a bit of a whimper, winning just once in their opening six matches.

Their quest for another top-half finish under Bruno Lage has been made slightly more difficult due to their underwhelming start, but there is still time to spark the team into life after the international break and get positive results.

The Old Gold’s goalscoring woes from last season – only 38 league goals scored – have reared again this season, with only three goals scored in the Premier League.

It’s clear they need some added creative input, and although Lage brought in Goncalo Guedes and Matheus Nunes to his side, he might rue missing out on a player who has shone in Scotland…

Wolves made a blunder on Kent

Ryan Kent was linked with a move back to England this summer, with Wolves tracking the layer alongside Fulham, Leeds United, and Everton.

With the future surrounding Wolves winger Pedro Neto still unclear as Arsenal looked set to sign him during the summer transfer window, he might still move away in the near future, and Kent would have been an ideal heir.

The £20m release clause for the “lively” 25-year-old shouldn’t put Wolves off, considering the fees they spent during the summer and, if Neto does move on, they would be able to reinvest the money.

Although they missed their chance in the summer, with Kent’s contract set to expire in 2023, they might even be able to secure his services for free in January, or on a cut-price deal.

Neto spent the vast majority of last season injured, however, comparing the Portuguese winger’s stats to the Light Blues player from the 2020/2021 campaign proves Lage might rue not making a move for Kent in the transfer window.

With 19 goal contributions domestically, Kent proved that he can be a far greater goal threat than Neto (11 goal contributions), showcasing his attacking talents as Rangers romped to the Scottish Premiership title. The 25-year-old had 2.54 shots per game compared to Neto’s 2.19, as he demonstrated his willingness to shoot from a wide position.

What’s more, Kent missed eight big chances during the campaign, meaning he may have had even more goals, with Neto missing only four.

His former Rangers teammate Leon Balogun described Kent as a “wing wizard” and after watching his tricky and creativity on the flank during his spell at the Gers, he could easily translate that to performing at a high level in the Premier League.

Lage might have missed the perfect chance to sign Kent, but he could well try again in January.

Everton suffer injury blow to Pickford

Everton have had their fair share of injuries already this season with Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina sidelined in the backline, and now a new update has emerged that could seriously impact the Toffees’ defensive set-up.

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Jordan Pickford is set to be out for up to a month with a thigh injury sustained in the Merseyside Derby.

Ornstein wrote in his article for the publication that the Toffees’ number one is set to miss out on the clash with Arsenal and West Ham United as well as likely missing out on England’s fixtures during the international break.

Lampard will be frustrated

There is no doubt that Frank Lampard will be frustrated with the news that Pickford could be out for up to four weeks as he has arguably been Everton’s best player of the season so far.

The injury to the England ‘keeper comes as he put in a Man of the Match performance against Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby last weekend with eight phenomenal saves against the club’s bitter rivals to hold the visitors to a 0-0 draw, leaving the Toffees unbeaten in their last four games in the Premier League.

In fact, Pickford is second only to Newcastle United’s Nick Pope for saves this season (26), and has had a significant influence on their ability to hold their last four opponents to a draw in the league.

Over six appearances, the 28-year-old has saved 81% of the shots against him, with 1.3 clearances per game and 42 touches per match which has led to him being the highest-rated player (7.47) in the entire Everton squad for his contributions in the team so far, according to SofaScore.

Lampard was full of praise for his keeper after his display against Liverpool last weekend hailing Pickford in his post-match interview:

He said: “Superb, the save from Nunez in the first half when I think we were comfortable as you can be against Liverpool – it’s just a moment of quality and he gets a fingertip to it.

“When he delivers like he did today everyone understands why he’s England’s number one and why we appreciate him so much here.”

With that being said, it’s a huge blow that he’ll miss the next month of action and Lampard will need to hope that Asmir Begovic can remain fit to replace him over his recovery period as Andy Lonergan is currently injured until after the international break as well.

Predicted WBA XI, team news vs BCFC

West Bromwich Albion are back in Championship action this evening as they host Birmingham City.

Steve Bruce’s side have not won in all competitions since their 5-2 drubbing of Hull City back in mid-August and will be desperate to get back to winning ways if they are to realise their promotion dreams.

The 61-year-old is facing a selection headache in midfield but still remains light up front due to the injury to Daryl Dike. Some of his summer signings could also be in contention.

So, what kind of side could we expect to see under floodlights at the Hawthorns? Here’s what we are predicting…

David Button will remain in goal and seems unlikely to change following the summer exit of Sam Johnstone.

He is expected to retain his place behind an unchanged back four from their draw with Burnley too, with Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Conor Townsend flanking a centre-back partnership of Kyle Bartley and Dara O’Shea.

We expect Jayson Molumby to drop out in favour of Jake Livermore who has recently returned to action. The £46k-per-week “natural leader”, as dubbed by The Athletic’s Steve Madeley, will be placed alongside another familiar face who was brought in permanently, Okay Yokuslu.

Meanwhile, further up the pitch, we might see a major change as a debut goal for Brandon Thomas-Asante could see him force his way into the starting lineup. He could be handed his full debut in place of the underwhelming Jed Wallace.

The 23-year-old had started the League Two campaign on fire, with four goals and two assists in their opening six games. Perhaps his introduction to the starting lineup here could see him bring this form to Bruce’s side.

Grady Diangana will likely take up a position on the other flank, with John Swift in the number ten role.

That leaves Karlan Grant to cut a lonely figure once again up top, and we will be hoping to add to his tally of four goals in all competitions to start the season off.

Newcastle to make Victor Osimhen offer

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Calcio Mercato reporter Daniele Longo has revealed that the Magpies are set to swoop for the Nigerian centre-forward.

He Tweeted: “Il #Newcastle pronto a fare una offerta al Napoli per Osimhen.”

This roughly translates to “The Newcastle ready to make an offer to Napoli for Osimhen.”

It has been reported that the Italian club will be looking for a fee in the region of €100m (£85m) but it remains to be seen how much the Toon are willing to offer.

Eddie Howe would love him

The Magpies head coach would love the attacker at Newcastle next season as he has proven his quality throughout the season with Napoli and has the potential to get better.

In the Serie A this season, he has scored 13 goals in 22 starts for the Italian side and averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.18. He has been a consistent performer, and goalscorer, in the division as he has been able to deliver the goods on a regular basis, earning plenty of plaudits along the way.

Former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo previously showered his international teammate with praise, saying:

“He’s the future, he’s going to do so well in football. I love him, he’s down to earth, he’s hard-working, he has a future and he has the mentality of a winner, that’s what I love about him.

“He has that lion’s heart. I love him, I just want him to keep working hard the way he’s doing, he’s going to break so many records in Europe and Nigeria.”

He was also dubbed a “thoroughbred bomber” by Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti and these comments from his manager and teammate highlight how impressive he has been.

Meanwhile, Callum Wilson is Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League with six strikes this term and this illustrates how badly Howe needs a consistent goalscorer to bolster his squad. He would, therefore, love Osimhen as the forward is exactly what he is missing, as proven by his excellent form so far for the Serie A giants this season.

At the age of 23, the Nigerian also has time on his side to continue his development. He can hone his finishing skills and improve his consistency, with the ex-Bournemouth boss potentially getting the chance to play a part in helping him fulfil his potential.

Tottenham: Report shares Martinez transfer update

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte could be ready to set up a transfer for Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Major summer ahead…

The Lilywhites and transfer chief Fabio Paratici are tasked with backing Conte in the summer transfer market and ensuring the Italian has everything he needs to maintain Spurs’ remarkable return to form.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Just after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo, few would’ve envisaged Tottenham in their strong Premier League position with just one point needed against the relegated Norwich on Sunday to secure Champions League football.

The north-Londoners, to appease their new miracle worker in Conte, have been tipped to target a plethora of fresh faces with just as many going the opposite direction (The Telegraph).

A major overhaul could be on the cards this summer with claim from The Mirror now surfacing involving Inter striker Martinez.

The Latest: Spurs could ‘hijack’ Martinez move…

It is believed that Spurs are ‘ready to hijack a transfer’ from rivals Arsenal if they seal a return to the Champions League on Sunday.

As they eye a move for the Argentine, The Mirror say ‘Conte could rub salt in the Gunners’ wounds’ by setting up a move for Martinez after they potentially beat their neighbours to a place in Europe’s most coveted competition.

This comes as chairman Daniel Levy is ‘on standby for major upgrades’ following Tottenham’s ‘surge to the brink’ of a European Cup return.

The Verdict: Top striker target?

The 24-year-old is finishing 2021/2022 in sublime form, scoring seven goals in his last six Serie A matches, leaving little wonder Inter won’t let him leave for less than £70 million.

That being said, Martinez could be the ideal man to partner or provide competition for Harry Kane if Levy is indeed willing to invest.

The £180,000-per-week forward has been called ‘perfect’ for England by former Man United midfielder Owen Hargreaves and it is believed that Paratici personally ‘loves’ Inter’s in-form talisman (Gianluca Di Marzio).

He’s also bagged 21 top flight goals and three assists in total this campaign and we believe he could be a big upgrade for Conte.

Rangers blogger hails Leon King v Hearts

Renowned Glasgow Rangers bloggers Four Lads Had a Dream were full of praise for the performance of Leon King in the Premiership on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Rangers youngsters prevail

Giovanni van Bronckhorst named a much-changed side yesterday ahead of the Europa League final in midweek, with some youngsters enjoying a deserved run-out.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Many of them impressed, as Alex Lowry grabbed himself a goal and an assist, while Cole McKinnon also got on the scoresheet in the 3-1 win over Hearts.

The Latest: King hailed

Taking to Twitter, Four Lads Had a Dream hailed the performance of 18-year-old Leon King at the back for Rangers, with some praise for Lowry as well.

The bloggers gushed: “Alex Lowry obviously grabbing the headlines & quite rightly, special player.”

“But Leon King is absolutely top class. What a talent. Both threaten to be as good as any academy graduate. The future looks very bright indeed.”

The Verdict: Unsung hero

As Four Lads Had a Dream pointed out, Lowry is likely to grab all of the headlines with his goal and assist, but King was an unsung hero at the back for the Light Blues on Saturday.

The defender won two of his duels and also recorded two clearances, two tackles and one accurate long ball, posting an 88% overall pass success rate throughout the game (SofaScore).

That was his sixth senior appearance of the season despite his tender age, which suggests that King will continue to be called upon by Van Bronckhorst next term, should he be needed.

Madeley gives West Brom transfer update

West Bromwich Albion are set for a big summer after Steve Bruce confirmed there would be changes made to the squad and now there has been a new update on a potential transfer target that could move to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the latest?

West Brom reporter for The Athletic Steve Madeley has given an update on the club’s pursuit of Milwall winger Jed Wallace.

In an article for The Athletic, Madeley claimed:

“Millwall’s Jed Wallace is another out-of-contract player near the top of Bruce’s wanted list.

“The 28-year-old former Wolves player can play in a central role but is arguably most adept out wide, where Bruce also wants to strengthen.”

Major Diangana upgrade

Steve Bruce is keen to improve his team to ensure that West Brom can compete for a chance at promotion back into the Premier League next season, and has made no secret about his intentions.

Bruce confirmed in an interview (via West Brom Official):

“We need a change and we need to freshen the whole place up with an influx of new players who have got a hunger and an energy to succeed and give us the lift we all need.”

With that being said, signing Wallace could be a huge addition to the team and could be the perfect upgrade on Grady Diangana for next season, especially when you consider his impact at Milwall this term.

The 28-year-old gem who was hailed “unbelievable” by current manager Gary Rowett has scored six goals and registered 12 assists, while creating 14 big chances.

He’s also made 2.5 key passes and taken 1.7 shots on average per game, an attacking output that could certainly improve the Baggies next season.

If Wallace could offer the same consistency at The Hawthorns he would be a huge improvement on Diangana who has only scored twice and assisted once in 41 Championship appearances throughout 2021/22, with nine fewer big chances created compared to the potential new signing.

Ultimately, it is clearly going to be a busy transfer window for the Baggies and it will be interesting to see who the manager brings in this summer to improve the team.

James Pearce drop Liverpool update

Liverpool have been in contract negotiations with Mohamed Salah for months, and now a reliable source has revealed an update on the Egyptian winger’s future at the club.

What’s the latest?

Journalist and Liverpool reporter for The Athletic James Pearce has revealed that Mo Salah will be staying at Anfield next season despite concerns that he could move on this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

In an article for The Athletic, Pearce relays Salah’s comments ahead of Champions League Final on Saturday in Paris, with the Liverpool star saying;

“I’m staying next season for sure.

“I don’t focus on the contract at the moment. It’s about the team. It’s a really important week for us. I want to win the CL again.”

Supporters will love it

Salah has arguably been one of the best, if not the best player for Liverpool during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at the club and has been hugely influential in his time on Merseyside so it would come as no surprise that supporters will love that he will be staying next season.

The 29-year-old goal machine has scored 156 goals and contributed 63 assists in 253 appearances and in terms of achievements has won a Champions League, Premier League title, FA Cup and Carabao Cup over the last five years, as well as winning three Premier League golden boots.

The popular winger’s contract with Liverpool ends this time next year and there has been speculation of a move to Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain this summer, which would have been a devastating blow for the supporters and the club, but it will be relieving that he has confirmed his immediate future is committed to Liverpool.

With that being said, it does mean that the Egyptian could leave on a free transfer next summer if he cannot reach an agreement with FSG and the powers at Anfield. It is reported that the club is not willing to break their strict wage structure to meet the demands of the player which could ultimately see the player depart without compensation for Liverpool in June 2023.

Ultimately, Liverpool supporters and Klopp will be pleased that in the short-term they have the opportunity to win more trophies with a player of Salah’s calibre in the side and keeping him at the club for the upcoming campaign puts them in a good position to compete.
