Liverpool chiefs now think Nicolò Barella is the perfect profile for Slot

Following their failure to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer, Liverpool chiefs now reportedly believe that one of the most coveted midfielders in European football is the perfect profile for Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool transfer news

To Slot’s credit, he’s turned to Ryan Gravenberch since missing out on Zubimendi with the Dutch midfielder playing his best football since arriving from Bayern Munich last summer. No longer a bit-part player, Gravenberch has arguably been the standout player in the early stages of the new manager’s tenure, even dictating play at San Siro as Liverpool came from behind to defeat AC Milan.

Given just how busy Liverpool’s schedule is, however, there will come a time when they will need to hand Gravenberch a rest and turn to alternative options, which is where issues could be presented to Slot to solve.

Without Gravenberch, the manager’s next option is likely to be Wataru Endo, who represents a more combative midfielder to the controller type that Slot prefers. Losing that element at the heart of his side in certain games will undoubtedly prove costly and should be the first problem that those at Anfield solve in 2025 using one particular player.

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool chiefs now believe that Nicolo Barella is the perfect profile for Slot and are keeping tabs on one of the most in-demand midfielders in Europe ahead of next summer.

Liverpool chiefs eyeing move to sign "unique" £30k-p/w defender for Slot

The Reds are keen to bolster their backline next summer.

ByBen Browning Sep 21, 2024

The Reds are not alone in their interest, with Real Madrid and Manchester City also eyeing moves to sign the Italian to form quite the race for his signature when next summer arrives. If Liverpool want to become serious title contenders again, then signing such a player to work alongside Gravenberch would certainly go a long way.

Barella would complete Liverpool's midfield

It’s taken longer than expected thanks to their unsuccessful and tiresome search for a defensive midfielder, but after adapting by using their current options, Liverpool could now complete their midfield with the addition of Barella next summer. The 27-year-old would join Italy teammate Federico Chiesa and transform the Reds back into title contenders in an instant under Slot.

Compared to Gravenberch, it’s clear that the Inter Milan star suits the profile of midfielder that Slot wants in his side whilst offering the experience that the Dutchman lacks. Offering the best of both worlds, Barella shares similar traits whilst representing an option who has performed on Europe’s biggest stages.

The numbers highlight just how excellent Gravenberch has been. The former Bayern Munich star has been as smooth as anything on the ball, progressing play at a world-class level, and just as impressive going in the other direction. Add a player like Barella next to him and the Liverpool star could be unstoppable for years to come at Anfield.

Despite the social media drama, Olise’s performances on the pitch have been nothing short of extraordinary. Since joining Bayern Munich five months ago, the 23-year-old winger has adapted seamlessly to life in the Bundesliga. The French international has contributed nine goals and nine assists in 23 appearances across all competitions. His stellar form saw him earn the Bundesliga's 'Rookie of the Month' accolade for October, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s brightest talents. He will return to action on January 11 when Bayern faces Borussia Monchengladbach.

Liverpool let teen leave for £0, now he’s worth more than Diaz & Salah

Arne Slot might have a bit more tactical nous than his predecessor, and that's not to discredit the exceptional management skills of Jurgen Klopp, whose Anfield appointment proved to be the start of a miracle that rained illustrious success down on Liverpool.

The Dutch head coach has got off to a flyer in the Premier League but let's not forget that he has inherited an elite crop of players, with the exploits of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah on the attacking flanks evidence of the title-capable quality.

Luis Diaz & Mohamed Salah's stats this season

Liverpool's attack petered out toward the end of the 2023/24 campaign, a core part of the nosedive that pulled Klopp's swansong away from contention for titles in the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup, falling to the eventual champions in the latter two.

Now, though, a shift in style under Slot appears to have revitalised both, with Salah nominated for the league's Player of the Month award for August. His Colombian peer's dominant display against Manchester United came a day late for the monthly award, but puts him in good stead for the second.

Both players are performing at quite an exceptional level, and though Diaz is more athletic, combative and energetic than his 32-year-old teammate, Salah has that Midas touch, with the eye test also underscoring his unrivalled influence in the Premier League.

Liverpool's forward success flows through Salah, who is currently valued at £46m by Transfermarkt, channelled toward goal with the ferocity of a waterfall. His deal is up at the end of the season but Richard Hughes will be working night and day to convince the Egpytian to extend his £350k-per-week contract.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Diaz's contract has also been a topic of conversation in recent months, though that door is closed (for now) following the conclusion of the transfer window. Barcelona had had a vested interest in the 27-year-old but were unwilling to meet Liverpool's demands of a payment well in excess of £50m.

There is, however, a current Premier League winger who is valued well above both Anfield stalwarts. Yes, Anthony Gordon could be plying his trade in his home city right now but instead remains at St. James' Park. Unknown to many, a return to Anfield would have actually been a homecoming for the England international.

Liverpool must rue letting Anthony Gordon leave

Hailed as a "menace" of a player by scout Antonio Mango, Gordon has enjoyed a steady rise to prominence in the Premier League, demonstrating clear talent at Everton but suffering due to the Toffees' turbulence, forcing his way out and signing for Newcastle United in a £45m deal in January 2023.

He had a slow start to life as a Magpie but soared throughout his first full season, winning the club's Player of the Year award after posting 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions, hailed for his "unbelievable" performances by Bruno Guimaraes.

Liverpool target Anthony Gordon in action for England at EURO 2024.

Such efforts turned Liverpool's head among others, and due to Newcastle's PSR concerns, Eddie Howe was set to lose his wide talisman in a £75m deal, agreed with Liverpool but not coming to fruition after alternative, less costly means were found to combat the situation.

His pace and potency down the left would be perfect for Slot's side, but would you know, he actually played for the Reds way back when, released from the academy as an 11-year-old before earning a second bite at the cherry with Everton, where he rose through the ranks.

Speaking to Everton's club website, Gordon said: "It was another chance for me to grow. But that was hard. It affected me mentally and dented my confidence. I had to pick myself up and go again.

“When I got to Everton, I never looked back.”

Given that Liverpool were willing to enforce a high-cost transfer to bring the 23-year-old back to Merseyside this summer suggests that there is an element of ruefulness about letting him go in the first place, for a little more prudence could have seen him rise through the ranks in the same way that Trent Alexander-Arnold did.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon

Would it be far-fetched to say that there's a sense Gordon could yet grace the Anfield pitch in Liverpool red? FSG's interest is genuine and the England star isn't exactly going to fade into the background any time soon, impressing for club and country.

And the fact that he's more valuable than both Salah and Diaz right now does highlight his high potential, something that Liverpool will need to pay the big bucks for if they do wish to bring him home.

However, Diaz is proving that he's the man for the job on Slot's left flank. Who knows what will happen in the future, but certain Liverpool figures might rue letting Gordon leave in the first place – just imagine a wing boasting both Diaz and Gordon as the options…

Lance Morris rattles Victoria after Joel Paris' maiden century

Western Australia’s pace attack reduced the visitors to 7 for 143 at the WACA

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-2021Victoria 7 for 186 (Morris 3-40) trail Western Australia 9 for 391 dec (Inglis 115, Bancroft 113, Paris 102*)A maiden first-class century for Joel Paris and a three-wicket burst by Lance Morris helped Western Australia take control against Victoria at the WACA.Paris and Josh Inglis took their seventh-wicket stand to 142, the latter making his third century of the season, before the Western Australia pace attack combined to reduce Victoria to 7 for 143 although they made it to stumps without further loss. After bringing up his century from 143 balls, having previously had a best of 93, Paris made the first breakthrough when Marcus Harris edged to slip. However, it was either side of tea that the game really swung when Morris made his mark. He struck twice in an over before the break, trapping Travis Dean lbw and having Peter Handscomb hooking to long leg, then added Nic Maddinson shortly after the resumption playing a loose drive.Cameron Gannon joined in when Matt Short played a poor shot off the back foot to edge to Inglis which left Victoria 5 for 85. Their innings was steadied for a while as Seb Gotch and James Pattinson added 53, but both fell to Matt Kelly – Pattinson well held, low down, at first slip and Gotch driving to point. It appeared Victoria could be bowled out before the end of the day but Will Sutherland and Scott Boland showed better application.Western Australia had resumed on 6 for 291 and in the sixth over the day Inglis reached his century from 132 balls. When he departed, Paris was accompanied by Kelly and Gannon as he brought up his hundred before the fall of the ninth wicket prompted Shaun Marsh to declare knowing their hopes of making the Shield final rest on victory and time was of the essence. The scorecard had a curious look with three centuries in a total under 400 then and the next-highest score being 13.

Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd formally tell Bologna that Zirkzee wants to join

Journalist Fabrizio Romano says Manchester United are close to completing their latest new signing, as Dan Ashworth looks to kick his new era at Old Trafford off with a bang.

Man Utd transfer news

Red Devils transfer rumours have swarmed the papers since Ashworth's arrival, with Matthijs de Ligt seen as a primary target to bring in at centre-back. A new update claims that the club have given the "green light" to sign the Bayern Munich defender, following talks with Erik ten Hag.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee has also emerged as a genuine option for United, as they look to acquire the signature of a player who can add much-needed competition for Rasmus Hojlund moving forward. The Dutchman has shone for his current club, scoring 14 goals in 58 appearances, and he has experienced playing for a huge club in the past, playing 17 times for Bayern.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have reportedly submitted a bid for highly-rated Tottenham teenager Mikey Moore, who is such a big young talent that he has been dubbed the "English Neymar". Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund are also believed to be in the picture, though.

In terms of an alternative to De Ligt, Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo has also been backed to head to Old Trafford in the current transfer window, but the former does appear to be the more likely signing currently.

Man Utd closing in on striker signing

According to Romano on X on Sunday evening, Zirkzee's move to Manchester United is now close to being completed, with everything in agreement with the striker's agent, and his club now officially informed that he has agreed to join United.

The only detail left to decide is whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ashworth will pay the €40m (£33.8m) release clause in full or negotiate a separate fee with Bologna.

"Manchester United and Joshua Zirkzee, almost there. Man Utd have now informed Bologna about agreement reached with Zirkzee over personal terms. All done also with JZ’s agent. Man Utd, talking to Bologna about new deal structure… or they can trigger €40m release clause."

At this point, it would be a huge surprise if Zirkzee's move to United didn't go through, considering how far talks are seemingly along. Everything appears to be in place, as Ten Hag, Ashworth and Ratcliffe seal a key piece of business for a player who appears to really want to don the famous red shirt.

The 23-year-old's aforementioned numbers for Bologna may not be those of a relentless goalscorer, but he is still a young footballer who could shine so much alongside superior footballers than the ones he is currently playing alongside.

Former AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli is under no illusions as to how good Zirkzee is as an all-round talent, too, saying of the Bologna ace earlier this year: "He’s a great player. I’ve followed him since his days at Bayern Munich and then at my Parma. A fantastic player, with physicality and quality. He has everything. He’s doing very well at Bologna."

Bruno will love him: Man Utd pushing to sign £34m star alongside Zirkzee

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is steering Old Trafford back on course.

1 ByAngus Sinclair Jul 8, 2024

To have Zirkzee and Hojlund dovetailing with one another will help take the pressure off both, also ensuring they are not overplayed by Ten Hag, and the hope is that both mature into formidable players over time, possibly even partnering one another down the middle of United's attack.

Johann Myburgh has been appointed as the first permanent regional head coach of South East Stars, the women’s centre of excellence that covers the Kent and Surrey regions in the ECB’s reconfigured structure.Myburgh, 40, takes over from Jonathan Batty, who filled the role on an interim basis during this season’s inaugural Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, which was a shortened tournament due to the Covid-19 outbreak. In a 21-year professional career, Myburgh went from being an Under-19 prodigy in his native South Africa to a potential New Zealand international after emigrating to Canterbury to begin a three-year qualification process. But he ultimately made his home in county cricket, joining Hampshire as a Kolpak in 2010, before a T20 spell at Durham and then a four-year association with Somerset, which ended with his retirement in 2018.Since then, Myburgh has worked as Assistant Head Coach at Sunrisers and Sydney Thunder in the WBBL. He also spent time with Somerset’s men’s and women’s cricketers alongside his role as Head of Cricket Development at Framlingham College in Suffolk.”I’m really proud to have been offered the role of Head Coach at South East Stars,” Myburgh said. “It’s an exciting time to be involved in women’s cricket and I can’t wait to get started.”I’m looking forward to supporting our players at what would be the start for most, of their professional journey. I hope to forge an environment that fosters growth and encourages players to express themselves.”Ultimately, we want to create something special and make the region proud of the way we go about playing our cricket and the behaviours we show on a daily basis, whilst advancing the women’s and girl’s game in Kent & Surrey.”Myburgh’s appointment follows those of Tom Lister and Lettie Hadley, who were named as South East Stars’ Senior Regional Talent Manager and Team Operations Manager respectively last month. A Lead Physiotherapist, and Strength and Conditioning Coach will follow in due course.Regional Director of Women’s Cricket, Richard Bedbrook, said: “I am really pleased that Johann has agreed to be the first full-time Head Coach of the South East Stars and we both now can’t wait to commence building some really strong relationships amongst the staff and player groups.”I was hugely impressed at the interview stage with Johann’s commitment over the past few years in building up his coaching resume and how he has strived to ensure his coaching has delved into all levels of the game, from participation, school, county and the professional level.”

Liverpool could now reunite Slot with "fast" £40m player that he loves

With Arne Slot looking to make his mark, Liverpool could reportedly reunite the Dutchman with a player who starred under his guidance at Feyenoord last season.

Liverpool transfer news

It could yet be a busy summer for the Reds, who must add the finishing touches to Liverpool 2.0 to ensure that Slot picks up where Jurgen Klopp left off. The German finished third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup in his final campaign, and reported summer transfer targets such as Teun Koopmeiners should go a long way in achieving similar, if not more, next season.

Slot prioritising £60m "superstar" who’d be Liverpool's dream Salah heir

Arne Slot loves a winger and he might just find the perfect signing in this Premier League phenomenon.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 7, 2024

The Atalanta midfielder worked under Slot at AZ Alkmaar and is set to play alongside Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo for the Netherlands at Euro 2024. It is there that the trio could become familiar with each other in what may prove to be crucial as the transfer window progresses. What could also help is the fact that the midfielder has already enjoyed a successful Anfield audition when Atalanta shocked the Reds to win 3-0 last season.

However, Koopmeiners may not be the summer's only familiar face through the door for Slot, who may yet be handed the perfect first arrival. According to Luke Edwards of The Telegraph, Liverpool are interested in signing Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United this summer in a deal that could cost up to £40m.

Yankuba Minteh for Feyenoord

The winger spent last season on loan at Feyenoord, where he earned Slot's praises. The new Liverpool boss said (via FatuNetwork): "He certainly doesn’t lack self-confidence. His willingness to give everything is enormous. When we see his statistics, it is really impressive. Minteh ran more sprint meters against Ajax in an hour than many players in the two games. He is incredibly fast. And he wants it so badly."

Now, Liverpool could take advantage of Newcastle's PSR concerns to land a player who knows all about playing a starring role under Slot.

"Fast" Minteh can ease potential Diaz blow

Whilst Luis Diaz's Liverpool future still uncertain amid links to Barcelona, Liverpool could ease any potential departure blow by welcoming a ready-made replacement in Minteh this summer. The 19-year-old winger is far from the finished product, but the signs are there that he'd be more than worth the gamble at the early stages of a fresh Anfield era.

What instantly stands out is just how clinical Minteh was in front of goal last season, even narrowly outperforming his expected goals rate. However, where the Newcastle gem was clinical, Diaz was wasteful, underperforming his expected goals by over three xG in what proved costly in the Reds' pursuit of title glory. It would be a massive step up for the Gambian, but Slot appears to know how to get the best out of him.

So if Diaz does depart in the months ahead, Liverpool can quickly turn that exit into a positive by swapping the Colombia international for a future star who has already outperformed his potential predecessor. Given that a deal to sign Minteh would also weaken Newcastle, it is one that Liverpool should go for this summer.
