Rising in the east

Cricket in Assam has long struggled under adverse circumstances. Things just may be about to change

Siddhartha Vaidyanathan09-Nov-2007

Rajesh Borah is perhaps the finest cricketer Assam has produced Siddhartha Vaidyanathan
The North-East Railway Stadium is a picturesque ground in Maligaon, on the outskirts of Guwahati. Nestled in the verdant Narakasur hills that envelop the ground is the famous Kamakhya temple, one of the most venerated shrines in India.Assam’s Under-15 side are playing Jharkhand in the east zone edition of the Polly Umrigar Trophy. Construction workers are busy digging up the turf at the basketball end of the ground, and trains chug along every few minutes at the railway end. Keeping a close eye on the cricket is Rajesh Borah, by all accounts Assam’s greatest cricketer.Borah, currently the head coach at the Assam Cricket Association, turned out in 66 first-class games for the state, and made five centuries in a career spanning 18 years. Most of Borah’s games were on this ground. His 62-ball 126 against Tripura in 1988, included 11 fours and 11 sixes and remains one of the fastest hundreds in Indian domestic cricket. (“Don’t forget the four consecutive sixes,” he smiles). Old-timers in Guwahati still speak of his explosive batting.A forgotten history
Borah is one in a long list of Assamese cricketers who rarely got any recognition outside their own playing fields. Locals still speak of torchbearers such as Munna Kakoti and Anup Ghatak, fast bowlers who weren’t noticed in the days when India relied solely on spin. Kakoti, nicknamed “Lillee” for his ferocious bowling, faded away after a promising start. Some say he sought refuge in drugs.”No exposure, no backing, no patron, no recognition,” is how Bimal Bharali, a former Assam captain, describes the cricket in the state. “It’s continuing even today. I am not surprised that four promising players have decided to join the Indian Cricket League. They might have thought there is no real future here.”Bharali himself showed tremendous promise early on, including a battling 45 against the visiting MCC side in 1976, but then languished in the lower rungs of the domestic scene.”There’s hardly any infrastructure, no stadiums [the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati remains a multi-purpose stadium], and very little off-season training,” he continues. “It rains for seven to eight months in a year, so one can’t think of off-season training. There aren’t too many indoor facilities. Most of the cricket that used to happen here [until last year] was 25-30 over games.”The pitches were of poor quality. Most of the administrators haven’t played the game, so it’s tough to expect too much. Many promising cricketers quit the game early. They either took up other sports or decided to settle down in a job. Playing cricket in the north-east is a long, hard struggle.”Silver linings
Yet Borah and Sanath Kumar, the former Karnataka medium-pacer who is currently coaching Assam, are optimistic about the future. “We started the SP Barua Trophy last year, the first off-season tournament in the state, and cricket is gradually moving away from Guwahati.” says Kumar. “Silchar, Dibrugarh and Nagaon have talent. There is one Ranji fast bowler [Krishna Das] from remote Barpeta in lower Assam. Mark Ingty, the medium-pacer, is from a tribe in Shillong. It’s a positive sign.”Borah, too, is upbeat about the future. “We were unbeaten in our five Ranji league games last year. We also won the East Zone Ranji one-day tournament. It was the best season in Assam’s history. Also, we’re sending the Assam team outside the state during the off season more often. Playing in tournaments like Moin-ud-Dowla and Buchi Babu will surely help. We will soon have an exclusive cricket stadium in Barsapara. That’s a first.”

Pretty as a postcard: the North-East Railway Stadium Siddhartha Vaidyanathan
Assam have benefited from having a number of players from outside the state in their side. This season three veterans from Tamil Nadu – Sridharan Sharath, now the Assam captain; former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh; and former Tamil Nadu captain Somashetty Suresh – are guiding the youngsters along. “Interacting with these cricketers, watching them practise, seeing them approach match situations, helps the local cricketers immensely,” says Kumar. “I am trying to get Assam’s cricketers to play in some local leagues too.”One step forward, two back
The positives have been accompanied by setbacks, though. Just when Assam appeared to be tracing a path back to the Super League, and a few youngsters had emerged as future prospects, along came the Indian Cricket League. The departure of four youngsters – Abu Nechim Ahmed, Pervez Aziz, Sujoy Tarafdar, and Pritam Das – and one senior player, Zakaria Zuffri, left Assam depleted.Nechim and Aziz were seen as two capable of breaking into the national side – which no player from the north-east has yet done – but the lure of the ICL’s money was probably too much for them. Local observers point out how these cricketers come from poor families, and how they have cause to be frustrated at the treatment they get from the system. “There is no real follow-up here,” says Kumar. “In other states talented youngsters are spotted early and persisted with. Even if they fail, they don’t lose their place. Here people want instant results.”He talks of Palash Jyoti Das and Mrigen Talukdar, both 22, who were Under-15 stars in the ACC Under-15 tournament in Malaysia in 2000. Palash was adjudged the best batsman (317 runs, including two hundreds) of the tournament and Mrigen (13 wickets) the best bowler. Yet they find themselves in the Ranji reserves, at a point in their careers when they should have been thinking about national selection.Early this month Assam suffered a heavy defeat against Gujarat in the opening round of the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy. Borah isn’t too perturbed, and prefers to look at the bigger picture. “Five years back I wouldn’t have been speaking about an exclusive cricket stadium in Assam, neither would I be watching talented 15-year-olds play three-day games. Cricket in Assam has come a long way. Give us three years and you could see an Assamese play for India.”

Neser signs with Hampshire for first eight T20 Blast games

Hampshire have signed Michael Neser, the Australian seamer, for their first eight T20 Blast games of the season. He will also be available as cover for Kyle Abbott and Mohammad Abbas for a handful of County Championship fixtures.Nathan Ellis, Neser’s compatriot, has been a revelation for Hampshire over the past two seasons and spearheaded their attack during their title-winning run in 2022. But a clash with the T20 World Cup means he is unlikely to be available this summer, leading director of cricket Giles White to turn to Neser, who is not in Australia’s T20 plans.”Nathan had a very positive impact on the team and we are confident that Michael will do the same,” White said. “He adds quality across the disciplines and formats – he also comes with an excellent reputation as a team-oriented player. He has good experience of English conditions and hopefully he can hit the ground running.”Neser, who played for Glamorgan last year, took 12 wickets for Brisbane Heat as they won the Big Bash League earlier this month. He also contributed in the field, taking a series of spectacular catches in the deep, and with the bat, hitting a vital 64 not out in a win over Perth Scorchers to secure a home qualifying final.”I am very excited to have joined Hampshire Hawks for this year’s Vitality Blast and can’t wait to join up with the squad,” Neser said. “Utilita Bowl [Hampshire’s home] looks to be an amazing place to play cricket and hopefully I can contribute to more success on the pitch.” reported that Neser will be replaced by Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq for the second half of the Blast’s group stage, following the T20 World Cup.

Man Utd and Arsenal should be breaking the bank for Victor Osimhen and make the €75m striker's Premier League 'dream' come true

Bizarrely, the Nigeria international doesn't seem to be an option for England's big hitters – but signing him would be seismic for either club

Victor Osimhen's name has, for the most part, been conspicuously absent from transfer rumours involving Arsenal and Manchester United, as the two English giants focus their respective striker searches elsewhere. But is that a decision they will live to regret?

Granted, after last year's debacle, the latest transfer saga unfolding around Osimhen might well be off-putting for Europe's elite – but for two teams in dire need of more firepower, pursuing the Nigerian hitman feels like a no-brainer as they look to achieve their wildly contrasting objectives next season.

It may only be a matter of time before he is all over the back pages with his release clause expiring in a matter of days, but Arsenal and United should already be doing everything they can to land a player who guarantees goals.

AFPPremier League 'dream'

Osimhen has demonstrated plenty of times that he isn't afraid of ruffling a few feathers to get his way, and that trend seems set to continue. The latest reports suggest the striker will reject a permanent stay at Galatasaray, with his heart set on fulfilling his 'dream' of playing in the Premier League.

The coveted frontman had already dramatically snubbed Al-Hilal's riches when it seemed as though he was heading for a lucrative move to the Middle East, and now he has turned down his loan club despite a productive relationship, a significant wage offer and the Lions' willingness to trigger his €75 million (£65m/$84m) release clause for overseas clubs.

While claims there is 'no alignment between his desires and reality', Osimhen's long-term goal has always been to play in England's top-flight. "I'm working so hard to make sure that I achieve my dream of playing in the Premier League some day," he said in 2023. "But like I said, it's a process and I just want to keep on this momentum and continue to do well."

AdvertisementGetty/GOALObvious choice

The revelation that Osimhen is determined to finally make that dream a reality this summer should have two Premier League giants who are desperately in need of more firepower on red alert. However, both Arsenal and Manchester United's attentions are fixed elsewhere for the time being. Arsenal have been focused on RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and have featured prominently in the transfer saga unfolding around Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres, with United supposedly interested in the latter, too, amid talk of a convenient reunion with Ruben Amorim.

Neither deal has proven to be straightforward, though, with their respective ~£70m ($96m) valuations and high wage demands supposedly causing negotiations to grind to a halt. It has even been reported that Arsenal are ready to look elsewhere, potentially bringing Osimhen into play.

In reality, the Nigerian is the most logical option. Sure, his salary would be substantial, but he would be neither club's top earner and the initial fee promises to be lower than £70m. Osimhen is also a proven goal-scorer in Europe's most elite leagues; there are not the question marks over how he would transition to the Premier League that exist for both Gyokeres and Sesko, with plenty of other imports from Portugal and the Bundesliga flattering to deceive.

AFPSignificant stumbling block

But times are a-changing, and while top Premier League clubs could previously hand out huge pay packets at will, there is the need for more pragmatism in the era of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and financial fair play (FFP). While Osimhen's massive £200,000-per-week wage demands are not technically out of reach, England's leading sides must now think much more carefully about signing new players to such significant contracts, especially with the very real threat of punishment in the form of points deductions.

The Nigerian has shown in the past that he is unwilling to budge on those demands, which probably explains why he doesn't top Arsenal and United's shopping lists, with Gyokeres and Sesko likely to command significantly less. Chelsea had long been linked with Osimhen, too, but new arrivals Liam Delap and Joao Pedro will be far cheaper in the long-term and, even at just 26, he doesn't fit within the Blues' transfer policy of going after high-potential, good value young players.

GettyTitle trump card

For Arsenal, turning to Osimhen feels like a no-brainer and is definitely worth the expense – especially for a club that is essentially pushing for short-term gain having fallen agonisingly short in both the Premier League and Champions League in recent seasons. He would bring the goals that can ultimately be the difference in a title race, as he showed by rattling in 26 Serie A strikes for eventual champions Napoli in 2022-23, and the same number in the Turkish Super Lig last season.

The Gunners drew more games than any other top-six finisher last season by some distance (14, with nine the second-highest figure), but lost as few as champions Liverpool (four). It's easy to see, then, where a prolific goal-scorer would make the difference; in those marginal situations where you are being held by the likes of Crystal Palace, Brentford or Everton, a striker like Osimhen get you over the line.

Worth even more than Piroe: Leeds must regret selling "sensational" star

With just 11 games to go in the Championship campaign this season, Leeds United currently sit three points clear of Sheffield United in their hunt to secure promotion – but doing so whilst winning the title.

The Whites’ form has been superb for large parts of the campaign, losing just three games to date, whilst also remaining unbeaten since the beginning of December.

Daniel Farke deserves a huge amount of credit for keeping the side competitive after numerous key departures over the summer after the play-off final defeat at Wembley.

The German will be looking to make it three second-tier title wins in England in the coming months, adding to the two he claimed during his time in charge of Norwich City.

However, if he is to achieve such a feat, he will likely rely on one player who’s so often produced the goods in the final third over the last couple of months.

Joel Piroe’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

The striker role at Elland Road has been one that has brought about conversation over recent years, with numerous players struggling to fill the void in Yorkshire.

However, over the last few months, Dutchman Joel Piroe has nailed down the starting role in Farke’s side, repaying the boss for the faith shown in him to lead the line.

The 25-year-old has already netted 16 times in his 35 appearances, already scoring outscoring his tally from his debut campaign at the club following his £10m move in 2023.

However, Piroe hasn’t had his success without his doubters, often coming under fire for his displays, but it’s safe to say the supporters are reaping the rewards with his recent form in the final third.

Despite his impressive run for the Whites in recent times, he’s still valued lower than one player who the club may regret offloading after his form away from the club.

The former Leeds star who’s worth more than Piroe

Before their recent success over the last couple of years, Leeds found themselves in a tricky financial situation, which saw them offloading numerous first-team players to balance the books.

Lewis Cook was just one example who departed his boyhood side for just £6m, now starring for Bournemouth in the Premier League and potentially featuring in Europe amid the Cherries’ recent form.

Former Leeds midfielder Lewis Cook

However, another player who previously plied their trade in Yorkshire but is now playing in the top flight is winger Jack Clarke, who made his breakthrough for the Whites back in the 2018/19 season.

The now 24-year-old departed in an £8.5m deal to join Tottenham Hotspur after his breakthrough campaign but failed to make a single Premier League appearance during his time in North London.

He’s since recaptured his form at Sunderland, registering 28 goals and 21 assists for the Black Cats, leading to Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley dubbing him “sensational” for his time at the Stadium of Light.

He’s since moved to Ipswich Town, once again joining a Premier League outfit, but has struggled to carry his excellent form to Portman Road, registering three goals and five assists to date – but has still seen an increase in his market value.

Clarke is now valued at £12.4m by Transfermarkt, a figure that is higher than that of Piroe, who’s only valued at £11.5m despite his excellent goalscoring record this campaign.

Given the increase and recent form in England’s second tier, Leeds must regret parting ways with Clarke, potentially having another dimension in attack had they kept hold of the youngster.

Undoubtedly, he left at a time when financial problems were present in Yorkshire, but his ability in the final third could’ve provided the added cutting edge in their quest for promotion in the coming months.
