17 Total Tests that have ended with a result after the first day saw no play. Seven such Tests have been played since 2000; the last two being between England and New Zealand in 2013, and India and Australia in Mohali in 2013.8.11 Pakistan’s run rate during their chase of 90. They scored 92 runs off 11.2 overs. This is the best run rate in Test history for any team batting at least 10 overs. No team had previously scored at a run rate of more than eight.2 Number of times Pakistan have beaten Sri Lanka by 10 wickets. The only team Pakistan have beaten by a 10-wicket margin on more occasions is England, who have faced this fate three times. This is the first instance of a visiting team beating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets at home.3 Stumpings effected by Sarfraz Ahmed during the second innings, the joint-most by any Pakistan wicketkeeper. This was also the first instance of three Sri Lankan batsmen being stumped in the same innings.123 Number of Test matches that Pakistan have won, the most for any Asian nation. They have played 390 Tests. India are next with 122 wins from 488 Tests. Sri Lanka have won 71 out of 236 Tests, while Bangladesh have seven wins from 91.7-76 Yasir Shah’s figures during the second innings, the best by an overseas bowler in Tests in Sri Lanka. Test of character awaits after testing day

The work on the India quicks’ legs finally began to show, but their fate in this series now depends on how their batsmen fare on a challenging final day

Persisted with old ball for reverse swing – Trevor Penney

India can’t have gone into the fourth day thinking of a win. Their plan would have been to delay South Africa’s attainment of a sizeable lead as much as possible. The Ravindra Jadeja threat in South Africa’s minds would have helped India. It had showed in how the hosts didn’t push for quick runs towards the end of the third day. However, there were two ways of going about it.The first was to actively try to take wickets. The second was to bowl with an old and soft ball for as long as they could because it would be hard to score off on a slow and slightly two-paced pitch. There was no right or wrong decision; it was a matter of having a feel of the conditions, the fitness and the intensity of the quicker bowlers, who would have to bowl with the new ball, and how much threat the possibility quick runs posed. As it turned out, India bowled with the old ball until they were literally not allowed to use it anymore. It was an extreme step, but MS Dhoni must have felt that was the way to go. For 146 overs, India went on with a scuffed-up ball that did almost nothing for the bowlers, except not travelling off the bat.You wonder if India thought they should have done otherwise when they saw Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander do things with the new ball, but you also wonder how much the workload of the fast bowlers at the Wanderers played in this decision. They came into this Test having had only three days’ recovery, saw India bat first and weather delay their turn a bit, but the intensity – especially from Zaheer Khan, from whom you could not snatch the ball at Wanderers – was visibly lower. When Graeme Smith was asked before the second Test whether South Africa would look to bat first to put the India bowlers back on the field as soon as possible, he didn’t sound too desperate to do that because he expected the tired legs to show up at some point in the Test. “I think that workload will be in their legs somewhere in the Test match,” Smith said. “I think especially if we can get a good partnership somewhere in our top order.”With the fast bowlers fatigued, Ravindra Jadeja did most of the bowling for India•Associated PressThe three India quicks bowled 86 overs at Kingsmead for 315 runs and three wickets, two of which were lower-order batsmen who had already done the damage. It wasn’t easy. Durban has been hot and humid when it isn’t raining, and the wicket is not as helpful as the one at Wanderers, but it still has something in it, especially as it deteriorates. Most of India’s work was done by the unwavering Jadeja. He bowled 58.2 overs, a rarity for a spinner in South Africa. No spinner has bowled more than 50 in an innings here in the last seven years. Jadeja was difficult to get away even when South Africa showed more intent on the fourth day. As the ball grew older, though, Jadeja got less and less bite from the pitch. The big debate around the new ball was whether India should have taken it as soon as a wicket fell, to not allow the new batsman time to settle in.Robin Peterson, who teed off for 61 off 52, said the old ball was much more difficult to get away, and that all the new ball did was give the quicks some extra bounce, but not much in terms of sideways movement. It probably didn’t make too much of a difference to India. Had they taken the new ball as soon as Faf du Plessis came in, they might have taken a wicket or two and slowed South Africa down. The new ball might also have flown to all parts, and they might have been looking at a deficit of 200 as opposed to the eventual 166.The difference, though, was in how the South Africa quicks bowled with the new ball. They were clearly fitter and more intense. The two wickets taken before stumps would have buoyed South Africa, and India now need a good third innings, after their hard work on both their previous tours was undone by ordinary third innings’ efforts. They would hate to lose the series after having done so well in Johannesburg and having got a pitch in Durban that arguably suited them more than the hosts. It will be a tough examination on the final day should rain not intervene. It is not just about batting time, even runs will come into the picture if they come close to wiping off the deficit. Their two best batsmen are at the wicket. It won’t be a bad call to promote Ajinkya Rahane, who can bat time, ahead of Rohit Sharma, who must be low on confidence and has shown previously his ability to bat with the tail. The tail, though, is almost non-existent on the evidence of the first innings. It will be a test of character for this young team should there be a full day’s play on Monday.

Done with aggro and camaraderie

Against Zimbabwe in Napier, New Zealand weren’t content with just winning, but doing it with relentlessness. Under John Wright, the team looks more cohesive

Andrew Alderson29-Jan-2012The New Zealand victory over a rebuilding Zimbabwe was demanded and delivered, but it was the way the team conducted itself that gave cause to think this is more than just a blip on their flatlining Test form of recent years.
The significance of the win is more about the camaraderie steadily building under coach John Wright.Since November the team has three wins from four Tests (albeit two against Zimbabwe) but it was the character the side showed in the seven-run win over Australia in Hobart which flowed into Saturday’s win. The New Zealanders were uncompromising in their efforts to concertina a result into three days, one of which was affected by weather.Firstly, it showed in the field. New Zealand’s performance was comprehensive, with few errors. The Zimbabwe batting was weak but a similar looking outfit (minus captain Brendan Taylor) made 329 against the NZ XI the previous week in the Gisborne warm-up match. Why should they suddenly capitulate for 51 (their lowest Test score) and 143 on a decent batting pitch? The main reason was New Zealand’s relentlessness. Thirteen of the 20 wickets were caught behind the wicket by a largely three slip, two gully cordon endowed with Alcatraz hands. Nothing was escaping. Dean Brownlie spilt the only catch at 4.21pm off the bat of Graeme Cremer. In Brownlie’s defence, he picked up four at third slip in the first innings and another in the second. Among New Zealand fieldsmen (not keepers) that first-innings effort is only bettered by Stephen Fleming (with five against Zimbabwe in 1997).Ground fielding glitches were also rare. Replacement fielder Sam Wells bobbled a ball and threw inaccurately at 5.40pm to concede an overthrow. BJ Watling could be proud of his wicketkeeping debut under intense public scrutiny. Making a maiden Test century, taking four catches in the second innings – including the one to win the Test in the extra half hour’s play – and conceding just four byes to a loose Trent Boult delivery down the leg side meant he more than held his own.Secondly, the New Zealand bowlers, led by Man-of-the-Match Chris Martin, sustained the pressure, delivering in tight channels with just a gentle sea breeze for assistance. Revolving the spells of the four pacemen proved as successful as when employed in the second Test against Australia. Martin took career-best figures of 6 for 26 runs in the second innings. The return took him to 218 Test wickets, third-equal with Chris Cairns on the all-time New Zealand list. More importantly, the 37-year-old is showing the next generation of Doug Bracewell, Tim Southee and Boult how to apply themselves in the game’s longest form.In addition to Martin’s leadership with the ball, Brendon McCullum’s tactical nous was evident in Ross Taylor’s injured absence. His gambler instincts were to the fore. It was rare if five men were not in the slip cordon, often with a leg slip and short leg attacking too. Finally, the New Zealand dressing room is breeding a more inclusive culture. It was reflected in their post-match celebration. The team ventured to the wicket to have a drink and a chant once the crowds had gone. Bonds are being cemented. Returning to the shed, Martin (the oldest player) joked with Watling (the man with the newest role); McCullum spoke at length with former Test opening batsman Robert “Jumbo” Anderson; a calf-strapped Taylor hobbled along, soaking it up on crutches – rehabilitation can wait when you have just won a Test. Riffs from tunes like New Zealand band The Exponents’ “Why does love do this to me?” floated up to the press box from the dressing-room bunker. Such unadulterated camaraderie is not only uplifting but vital if they are to progress from eighth in the Test rankings during a busy year playing in the West Indies, India, Sri Lanka and South Africa. The New Zealanders are approaching the looming South Africa tour in the best possible frame of mind.

Wanderers deal could see sweeping changes

The Gauteng Cricket Board agreed to smile for the cameras and do exactly what everybody expected them to

Firdose Moonda14-Aug-2009It’s all over because the fat lady sang. Or rather, the fat cats agreed to disagree and smile for the cameras and do exactly what everybody expected them to. Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) resolved their dispute, the Wanderers was handed back international status, which means that England will play at the ground that CSA president Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka calls “the Mecca of SA cricket.”What has gone unnoticed is the fine print and CSA’s perfectly executed trade-off. In return for lifting the ban on the Wanderers, the mediation agreement between the parties stipulated that the GCB has to undergo a management makeover and make greater commitments to transformation. The GCB are required to change the representation on its board so that 50% of the members are from previously disadvantaged (black) clubs, and the remaining 50% are from advantaged clubs (traditionally white clubs). Once the new board is in office, a committee of six will be chosen, whose job it will be to specifically address transformation. This way, CSA has smoothed over the issue of the IPL contract and hosting rights with the GCB and the issue of racial bias that threatened to split the GCB from within. In both cases, the parties see the agreement as a step forward. “We were not trying to isolate the issues, be it over the IPL contract, hosting rights or transformation; instead we were trying to tackle the issue of leadership at the GCB as a whole. If you look at the complaints that were being raised against the GCB they covered a range of things, from cricketing issues such as lack of results in the province and also a lack of transformation. We saw the leadership problem as the root cause and this is what we are looking to solve,” Nyoka said. The GCB have accepted the criticism of their management, admitting that they, “had to make some concessions” in brokering the deal. Barry Skjoldhammer, president of the GCB, said “the animosity has been taken out” of the situation and gave every indication the GCB was willing to change the composition of its board. “Our annual general meeting (AGM) was originally scheduled for next Wednesday (August 19) but it has been postponed. Instead we will have a special general meeting on that day, in which we will inform all our members of the changes we intend to make and hopefully within three weeks will have the AGM and elect the new board”.The new board will have to adopt a transformation charter, which Nyoka said CSA will help the GCB to implement. “We have a transformation committee of our own, who are experienced and who know how to deal with the issue and we hope the GCB will make use of them,” Nyoka said. “In fact, if the GCB wants assistance with aligning their new constitution with CSA’s model, we will be happy to provide help.”The GCB and CSA are presenting a united front with the GCB saying they will accept CSA’s assistance and understand that their board needs to be more “inclusive.” The body that brought the complaint of racial discrimination against the GCB, the Concerned Cricket Fraternity, is reacting with a little more concern. While they also lauded the progress made and said they believed their concerns had been addressed. It’s whether or not the transformation charter is implemented that has the Fraternity uneasy. In launching their original complaint, the Fraternity made clear that they had waited over fifteen years for a change in their province, and had tried on numerous occasions in that time to engage in dialogue with the GCB. Hussein Manack, their spokesman, explained that was their reason for calling on higher authorities, such as CSA and the Minister of Sport to intervene in their dispute.

The GCB are unlikely to risk ministerial intervention again and will probably want to stay out of CSA’s naughty kid’s roster for a while. They being so compliant with the governing body of cricket that they don’t even want to see the IPL contract anymore

Even after those authorities have got involved; the Fraternity remains concerned that the commitment to transformation is sustained. Nyoka provided some reassurance. “We will definitely be monitoring the progress of the GCB. It’s not just CSA who will be acting as a watchdog but the local government as well, because they have their own guidelines regarding transformation.”The Fraternity may only be convinced once they see aggressive development. Manack said they want “rapid transformation”. While the GCB and CSA agreements have been made in good faith, they have yet to set clear deadlines and this concerns the fraternity. Manack hoped to see “complete” change in one to three years, which includes development of facilities in disadvantaged areas, such as Soweto, Lenasia and Eldorado Park, and the development of players from those areas.”In the last meeting with the GCB (before the agreement), they presented us with a ten-year plan for transformation and we don’t want to be in that situation again,” Manack said. “While we understand that this time the Minister will be monitoring the process, we don’t want to be going nowhere slowly again.”The GCB are unlikely to risk ministerial intervention again and will probably want to stay out of CSA’s naughty kid’s roster for a while. They are being so compliant with the governing body of cricket that they don’t even want to see the IPL contract anymore. “Our issue is more about hosting rights,” Sjkoldhammer said. Nyoka confirmed that CSA and all the affiliates were working on defining the hosting rights for all grounds. What everyone seems to have realised is what Nyoka plainly states, “South African cricket needs a strong Gauteng, as the richest province and the province with the most players, so we need the problems fixed”. It’s the understanding of a “strong Gauteng” that differs. For CSA and the GCB that means an organisation that doesn’t cause problems but for the fraternity it means something a lot more intricate. It means ensuring players like Johnson Mafa and Sushil Parbhoo are no longer sidelined and are given the same chance as any other white player in the province, it means having the Soweto Cricket Stadium up to international level so that one day England will be able to play a match there and it means not waiting another 15 years for change.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Much of this may hinge on Romero's future. Atletico Madrid pulled out of a move for the Argentinian international, with Tottenham said to be holding out for £60m ($81m). It seems something may have to give if Spurs sign Zabarnyi, in addition to having Romero and Micky van de Ven in the centre-back department. Moreover, the Bournemouth man has 'prioritised' a PSG move so that may make matters more difficult.

"I don't know [whether I'll stay in the Premier League], it depends on what comes. Like I said to my Belgium colleagues, I have a family. I have young kids I have to take care of, it's a decision that has to suit all of us, not just me. When I'm 20 years old and all by myself, I can make a decision, that is very easy. Anrich Nortje, Sisanda Magala ruled out of World Cup

Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams have been included as replacements in South Africa’s 15-man squad

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Sep-2023Fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala have been ruled out of the 2023 ODI World Cup with injuries. They have been replaced by Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the tournament that begins in India on October 5.Nortje has a suspected stress fracture of the back after experiencing spasms during the second ODI against Australia earlier this month. Magala, who played only the third ODI against Australia and went for 1 for 46 in four overs, has a left-knee injury.”It’s hugely disappointing for Anrich and Sisanda to be missing out on the 50-over World Cup,” South Africa’s coach Rob Walter said. “We sympathize in their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action.”This provides an opportunity for Andile and Lizaad on the global stage. Both players have been part of our winter programs as well as having represented South Africa in the recent white-ball tour against Australia. They offer great skill sets and we’re excited to have them complete the 15-player squad for this year’s World Cup.”Phehlukwayo played in the second and fifth ODIs against Australia. While he did not make much of an impression in the first game, he scored 38 off 19 balls to finish the innings strongly in the series finale and then took 1 for 44. Williams played three of the five matches, taking 3 for 44, 1 for 17 and 0 for 24.Nortje’s absence is a major blow for South Africa as he is their quickest bowler with substantial experience in India, where he plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He played in the Major League Cricket tournament in the USA over the South African winter and was rested for the T20Is against Australia. He was then ruled out of the first ODI but played the second, bowling only five overs before leaving the field. He missed the third game after he was sent for scans and was then ruled out of the series.Magala had not played any cricket since splitting the webbing in his hand at the IPL in early April and was subsequently ruled out of the T20Is against Australia with infrapatellar tendinopathy – pain in the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin bone. He experienced discomfort in the knee again after playing one ODI against Australia.South Africa leave for India on September 23, and play their warm-up games against Afghanistan on September 29 and New Zealand on October 2.
