Cottee Moots Potential West Ham Development Over Summer

West Ham United legend Tony Cottee has mooted potential movement over a possible takeover to come in the not-too-distant future.

Are West Ham safe from the drop?

It has not been an easy 2022/23 campaign for the Hammers by any means with the Londoners attempting to battle off relegation on the back of a seriously impressive season prior.

Indeed, with just three games remaining, the Irons have been able to open up a seven-point cushion on the drop zone which could well be enough to see them survive.

But matter off the field have also not been easy in east London with co-owner David Gold passing earlier in the year.

However, there could still be something to cheer about as they face a semi-final appearance in the Europa Conference League against AZ Alkmaar.

With the summer on the horizon, Cottee has been speaking on the We Are West Ham podcast where the topic of a potential takeover was raised:

(7:40) The focus as a football coach has been fully on staying in the Premier League, and you know, if that happens, which it should do, then I think we might see some movement in the summer in terms of what happens off the field.

"I haven't got any inside information I can share with you. I'd love to sit here and say that I know this is going to happen that's going to happen, but I don't know.

"I can only sort of speculate, like we all can really and, you know, I think ultimately there will be some movement. David Sullivan can obviously sell the club now without paying any penalties to the government. Matters have obviously been complicated by the sad loss of David Gold as well. So there's been a lot going on off the field as well as on the field."

Will West Ham be sold?

Over one year ago now, West Ham were involved in a potential takeover discussion with PAI Capital who were keen to acquire the club.

It was reported the party had proposed two bids to the current West Ham ownership but both efforts were knocked back with the club not for sale.

The report from Sky Sports claims Gold and Sullivan were not convinced that selling the club at the time was in the best interests of all involved at the club.

The managing partner of the group, Nasib Piriyev, even released a statement on their failed attempts to acquire the London club: "I am disappointed that we cannot conclude the deal as hoped, as we have some big ideas for the club.

declan-rice-west-ham-arsenal-transfer-thomas-partey-edu-partey

However, after what has gone on both on and off the field this season, it will be interesting to see whether Sullivan would be open to offloading the club to someone else.

Off-the-field matters aside, the performances have simply not been good enough this season and it could potentially require significant money to do so.

It is believed that Declan Rice could leave over the coming months which could fund a big chunk of that, but the fans may not be satisfied with simply reinvesting money brought in from player sales.

If West Ham are able to seal their top-flight status for another year, then perhaps it could be time for Sullivan to consider moving on.

However, if West Ham do taste European triumph, it will be interesting to see whether that could be the high which could bring an end to Sullivan's time or whether it only increases his taste for success at West Ham.

Burnley: £20m Target Could Be A Dream Tella Replacement

Vincent Kompany will already be making plans for Burnley's summer transfer window following their Championship title win this season, and Coventry City's Viktor Gyokeres is seemingly one player on his shortlist.

Could Burnley sign Gyokeres?

According to Football Insider, the Clarets have joined the race to sign the Sweden international this summer, with Kompany no doubt keen to bolster his attacking options at Turf Moor to avoid an instant return to the second tier next season.

The likes of Everton, Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Fulham are also said to be keen on the 24-year-old frontman, who Coventry are said to be resigned to losing should they fail to achieve promotion to the Premier League, although a playoff spot is still firmly within the Sky Blues' reach.

The former Brighton gem has previously been valued at £20m by Coventry amid his sensational form in the Championship, which has seen him register a hugely impressive 21 goals and 10 assists so far this campaign, averaging a 7.21 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Given that only Josh Brownhill (7.26) would better this average rating in Burnley's squad, it is clear the quality that Gyokeres could add at Turf Moor, especially as no player would come particularly close to the Swede's impressive goal contribution tally.

The powerful striker's superb performances have seen him labelled "unplayable" by teammate Max Biamou, while manager Mark Robins also sang his praises earlier in the campaign.

He said: "He’s not the finished article by any stretch of the imagination but he has some unbelievable ability – power, technique. He has got everything in his locker and that desire and hunger to score goals."

Could Gyokeres replace Tella at Burnley?

Although Burnley look likely to swap places with Southampton this season, given they sit bottom of the Premier League, it could be tough to prise impressive loanee Nathan Tella away from St Mary's this summer, and he would need replacing after he has fired in 17 goals and provided five assists for the Clarets en route to the title.

Burnley forward Nathan Tella.

However, the stats suggest that Gyokeres could potentially be an upgrade on the Saints loanee at Turf Moor should he be signed from Coventry ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Not only did the Swede register more goals and assists than Tella, but he has also averaged more shots (three vs 1.9), key passes (1.8 vs 0.8) and dribbles (2.1 vs 0.9) per game this season and for a technically poorer outfit, which suggests that he could be a significant all-round upgrade in the Clarets attack.

It won't be easy or cheap to prise Gyokeres away from Coventry this summer, given the competition for his signing, but it seems clear that he could be an effective player for Kompany in the top flight.

League Champion Edging Race To Become Chelsea Manager

Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is "edging the race" to become Chelsea's next boss, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Have Chelsea found their next manager?

The Blues have been a mess this season, sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League and finding themselves with nothing to play for the rest of the campaign. Their Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid on Tuesday ended any hopes of silverware, not that progression past the reigning European champions ever felt overly likely.

Frank Lampard has now lost all four matches since replacing Graham Potter, and it is clear that the 44-year-old has almost no chance of being Chelsea's manager beyond this summer. Instead, the search to find his successor is ongoing, with a host of top names thought to be in the running.

Nagelsmann has been at the forefront of many recent reports, with the German recently sacked as Bayern boss, in a move that surprised many. Now, a new update has emerged that further suggests he could the next man in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann celebrates after the match vs Spurs

Is Nagelsmann the man to take charge?

Writing in a column for Give Me Sport, Jones revealed that the 35-year-old is in pole position to land the Blues job, though he mentioned Luis Enrique as another strong contender:

"Chelsea are narrowing down their options for the next manager and there is a feeling Julian Nagelsmann is edging the race to come in as boss."

Nagelsmann could be the standout option for Chelsea this summer, considering his reputation as one of the most exciting and talented young managers in the game. He is actually younger than both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but has already managed a club of Bayern's stature, which speaks volumes.

While some could point to inexperience being an issue because of his age, it is only a number and he has already been at a high level for years, even managing Hoffenheim in the Champions League when he had only just turned 30. The one-time Bundesliga champion has also dealt with big egos and characters at Bayern, so dealing with similar at Chelsea shouldn't daunt him.

Spurs Issued Potential Blow Over 35 y/o Manager

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be interested in replacing Antonio Conte with Julian Nagelsmann – but the German is not expected to make a decision until the summer.

Is Nagelsmann Tottenham's first choice?

Having been released by Bayern Munich last week, it is reported Nagelsmann has emerged as one of the front-runners on the north London club's radar.

But he is not the only one with the director of football, Fabio Paratici, believed to have drawn up a shortlist of potential options for Daniel Levy to choose from.

Following the Italian's departure, Cristian Stellini – along with Ryan Mason – is expected to see out the campaign in the dugout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And the notion of potentially bringing in Nagelsmann over the coming days has been shut down by journalist Valentina Maceri speaking on Sky Sports:

"As far as we know, Nagelsmann has no interest to join a club right now because he wants to take his time to reconsider everything that he experienced at Bayern Munich.

"He wants to reanalyse everything he did with Bayern Munich. So he wants to take his time to breathe, to take a break and to rethink about what he has achieved so far as a very, very young coach."

Should Spurs look beyond Nagelsmann?

A big decision awaits the north London side over the coming days, with the prospect of seeing out the remaining 10 games with Stellini and Mason when there is Champions League football to play for.

Whatever Spurs do, it does feel as if recent results have put them in a position where Champions League football is going to be a big challenge with their injury issues in mind.

The draw against Southampton saw Spurs miss the opportunity to go four points clear of Newcastle United with 10 games remaining.

Julian Nagelsmann prepares for Bayern Munich's Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

And the issue now lies in the Magpies having two games in hand over the Lilywhites with the gap reduced down to two points.

This will put huge pressure on the shoulders of whoever is the manager for the remainder of the campaign.

If it is to be Stellini, then he certainly has some massive tests ahead of him with away trips to Liverpool and Newcastle as well as home games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United within the next month.

But there would remain some uncertainty as to whether a new face could provide a big enough boost at this stage in the season to get them over the lines.

And with Nagelsmann seemingly off the cards, it does reduce the number of realistic appointments, with only Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino currently out of a job.

There is a lot of uncertainty around Spurs with the futures of Harry Kane and Fabio Paratici remaining unresolved as yet, so perhaps it is best for a potential new manager to wait until the summer to assess his options.

Leeds: Javi Gracia could now unearth Dallas 2.0 at Elland Road

Leeds United are a side struggling, desperately hoping that they can steer themselves away from yet another narrow escape from the drop.

The squad has seen something of an overhaul in the last year or so, with Jesse Marsch having been overwhelmingly backed following their survival last season.

He was allowed to bring in a host of new faces to Elland Road, yet was dismissed just last month only for Javi Gracia to replace him. The Spaniard now must rally his troops, none of which were brought in on his request, and help return the Whites to previous winning ways.

It was under Marcelo Bielsa that they last tasted consistent success, as their return campaign in the Premier League merited widespread praise with a squad that was not laden with quality but certainly fought for the badge.

This side was underpinned by the impressive qualities of Stuart Dallas, with his leadership and steely resolve proving instrumental. It is something which they have lacked in his absence but could gain with the promotion of young midfielder Charlie Allen.

Who is Charlie Allen?

The 19-year-old bears plenty of similarities with the northern Irishman, most notably his ability to feature in numerous positions. Across his 267 appearances for the club (and counting, hopefully), the 31-year-old has been known to feature at both full-back positions, on the wing and central midfield.

With the latter being his favoured role, where his tireless nature is highlighted, Allen could be ready to soon step in as his potential predecessor is yet to recover from his broken leg.

Sharing the same nationality as Dallas, the teenage sensation has starred for the U21s this season in the engine room, boasting two goals and two assists in just 14 league appearances.

Across these games, Transfermarkt suggests that he too has featured on both flanks, in a defensive and offensive central midfield role and even as a right winger.

He even drew praise from Jim Magilton, his international elite performance director, who claimed:

“Charlie is one of those kids you can play anywhere and he’ll probably still be the best player on the pitch. He can play right back, central midfield, on either wing, at no. 10 or at centre forward.”

If this doesn’t liken him to Dallas, then the suggestion made by journalist Patrick Van Dort that he is “a dream to coach” only serves to exacerbate this link.

The ageing talisman’s former boss Stephen Baxter even issued a similar quote about the versatile stalwart, claiming that “he’s every manager’s dream.”

A utility man with an eye for goal, the future is remarkably bright for Allen, who will likely seek to emulate his compatriot in how he has endeared himself to the Leeds fans.

Nottm Forest ‘in talks’ with Angelo Gabriel

Nottingham Forest are reportedly ‘in talks’ with Santos youngster Angelo Gabriel over a move to the City Ground before the end of the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Gabriel an exciting youngster

The 18-year-old has emerged as an exciting Brazilian talent, catching the eye with some of his attacking performances in his homeland. He already has 101 senior appearances to his name for Santos, despite only entering his adult years last month, and he has registered 12 goal contributions in that time.

Recent reports have suggested that Forest are hoping to sign the forward this month, and they have since set the wheels in motion over a potential transfer.

The Latest: Forest ‘in talks’ over Gabriel move

According to The Daily Mail, Forest remain ‘in talks’ with Gabriel and his representatives over a transfer to the City Ground, with Newcastle United mentioned as previously showing an interest.

The Magpies even had a £22m bid rejected for him before, but it now looks as though the Reds could be in pole position to bring him to England.

The Verdict: One for the long-term

Gabriel has the potential to be an intriguing signing by Forest if they secure a move for him, coming in as a player with a high ceiling who won six caps for Brazil’s under-16s.

Santos have a rich history of producing great Brazilian players, from Pele to Neymar, and if Gabriel could get anywhere near their heights at the City Ground, Steve Cooper would have a superstar on his hands. Indeed, the 18-year-old’s former coach Betinho has said that he “is like Neymar in terms of his dribbling at speed and his change of direction”.

Expecting Gabriel to reach the level of Brazil’s joint-record goalscorers is a big ask, but to have surpassed 100 appearances at senior club level at his age is a testament to the standards he has already reached.

Journalist criticises Man Utd’s Eriksen

Journalist Samuel Luckhurst was critical of Christian Eriksen in Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat away to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Lowdown: United beaten at Arsenal

Erik ten Hag’s side faced one of their biggest matches of the season so far, making the trip to the table-topping Gunners and looking to keep their title hopes alive.

Marcus Rashford’s stunning strike gave United the lead but Eddie Nketiah swiftly equalised with a header in what was a hugely entertaining first half.

Bukayo Saka nudged Arsenal in front after the interval before Lisandro Martinez levelled it again. Just as the two teams looked set to share the spoils, Nketiah struck again from close range late on to seal victory for the Gunners, the goal given after a VAR check.

The Latest: Eriksen criticised for goal

Taking to Twitter, Luckhurst was critical of Eriksen for his involvement in Saka’s goal.

The Manchester Evening news journalist tweeted:

“Eriksen needs to do better there and arguable De Gea could have been better set for it. Takes a step to his left a split-second before Saka hits that and it’s costly.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-10/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Slight drop-off?

Eriksen has been a brilliant signing for United since arriving last summer  – Michael Carrick has called him ‘fantastic’ – but it’s fair to say that today wasn’t his strongest performance in a Red Devils shirt, even aside from the moment that Luckhurst referenced.

According to Sofascore, the Dane had just a 71% pass completion rate against Arsenal, also failing to play a single key pass and losing the ball 18 times during a frenetic contest in north London.

Eriksen remains a key player without question – he is United’s joint-eight highest-rated performer this term as per Sofascore – but it is easy to forget that he will turn 31 next month and that midfield battles can pass him by physically, especially against such a relentless Gunners team.

Ten Hag could be wise to rotate him a little more during the second half of the season, having started him in every Premier League game since mid-October, in order to prevent him dropping off as the campaign goes on.

Chelsea: Jennings tears into ‘problematic’ transfer approach

Presenter Rory Jennings has torn into Chelsea’s recruitment strategy under Todd Boehly since the American bought the club back in May.

The Lowdown: Mixed success in transfer market as rumours swirl

Chelsea signed a number of players in the last summer’s transfer window, when they signed the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Raheem Sterling and Wesley Fofana under former manager Thomas Tuchel. In total, the Blues spent a whopping £202.6m on transfers.

However, their Premier League campaign has been poor so far, and Graham Potter’s side are 10th in the league with West London rivals Fulham and Brentford both above them. Their quest for a top-four finish is in serious doubt as they sit 10 points adrift of fourth place.

And perhaps in reaction to this, the Stamford Bridge outfit have been linked with a raft of new arrivals in the January window. Indeed, they have already brought in Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana for a combined €62.5m (£55m), while they have recently been linked with the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez.

The Latest: Jennings ‘troubled’ by club’s approach to recruitment

Speaking on the Saturday Social, Jennings admitted he was ‘troubled’ by Boehly’s approach to signing players and labelled the consortium as ‘problematic’.

He stated: “The recruitment is something that I am troubled by, because I think that Chelsea’s approach over recent times, this new era – this Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium – has been problematic. The word that I’m going to use is ‘scattergun’. I don’t feel like there is an overarching strategy to the way that Chelsea approach transfers. Have we genuinely been monitoring Enzo Fernandez for the past 18 months?

“Of course we haven’t. We have simply seen, at the World Cup, that a geezer has played really well and we’ve gone, ‘d’you know what, he’s good, let’s sign him’.

“It’s just an incredibly foolish way of doing transfers. Effectively, I could do that. I went to the World Cup, I went to two Argentina games and I saw Enzo Fernandez play, and I could tell you that he was good.”

The Verdict: Chelsea need to spend smarter, not harder

Having lots of money to spend on players is all well and good, but you need someone who is going to be able to buy the right players for the club.

Potter has the potential to do well at Chelsea, as he’s proven that he could be on the cusp of being a great manager. Last season, he was able to achieve a top-half finish with Brighton & Hove Albion – a club that doesn’t spend great amounts on players.

In the January transfer window, he needs to be able to get the players he wants so he can shape his vision of Chelsea. Supposedly the Blues board are willing to give him time – and the players – but if he’s not backed with an intelligent transfer strategy, it could all go up in flames.

Liverpool eyeing Galatasary defender Boey

Liverpool are reportedly ‘interested’ in a January move for Galatasary right-back Sacha Boey.

The Lowdown: Ramsay injury

Calvin Ramsay was signed from Aberdeen in the summer with an injury, which has meant that his senior game time has been limited to just two matches in total over all competitions so far this season.

By contrast, first-choice right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has played 20 times already this campaign, and will need to be managed in the second part of the term if the Anfield outfit are still in multiple major competitions.

The Latest: Boey interest

As per French news outlet Jeunes Footeux, the Merseyside club are ‘interested’ in signing Boey in the January transfer window, but will face competition from fellow Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, as well as Lyon in France, for his signature.

Palace are also willing to put an offer of €16m (£14m) on the table for him, a price that the Reds would likely have to match.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-35/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Smart move

With Ramsay’s ongoing injury, and Alexander-Arnold’s need for a rest for certain games, signing Boey in January certainly seems like a smart move.

Hailed as a ‘talented’ defender by journalist Zach Lowy, the 22-year-old ranks as Galatasaray’s second-best performer in the Turkish top-flight this term, with no other player in the squad making as many tackles (3.2) or interceptions (1.8) per game than him so far (WhoScored).

The Frenchman shares the same agent as Reds attacker Roberto Firmino, which could help push through a January move ahead of their competitors.
