Tuchel set to take charge of England in 2025 Shearer suggests Tuchel shouldn't ignore Jones Jones in top form for Arne Slot's LiverpoolFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Tuchel signed an 18-month contract to take over the England national team from the start of 2025 as England look to mount a challenge for the 2026 World Cup. Lee Carsley is set to maintain his interim charge of the side until the end of this year as Tuchel enjoys his time off and recuperates before beginning his reign as the Three Lions boss.

Tuchel is likely going to keep an eye on England players over the next few months as he will look to pick his perfect side right from the outset. Former England legend Shearer has now put forward Liverpool's Jones as one of the players Tuchel shouldn't 'ignore' when he begins his reign despite the midfielder not having been capped by either Gareth Southgate or Carsley.

Getty ImagesWHAT SHEARER SAID

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "Curtis Jones was sensational in Liverpool’s game with Chelsea, and the real standout player. He should absolutely be considered for Thomas Tuchel’s England if he continues the form we saw last Sunday.

"When you consider he hasn't been a regular in that Liverpool team and it was Liverpool's first real test of the season, which we said that if they could get through it, then people will start taking them seriously in terms of them really challenging for the title, then Curtis’ performance was even more special.

"Liverpool v Chelsea was a wonderful game of football, which both teams contributed to; Chelsea more than played their part in the game, but there's no doubt that the standout performer was Curtis Jones and if he can stay in the team and perform like that, then he can't be ignored by Thomas Tuchel in the future."

WHAT NEXT FOR JONES?

Jones was not a set starter for Arne Slot at the start of the season as he was not given starts until the start of October. However, since then the 23-year-old has started both of Liverpool's Premier League clashes and will likely be in the playing eleven when they take on Arsenal on Sunday, October 27.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Huge changes in the transfer market could be on the horizon after the European Union said that some FIFA rules surrounding player contracts conflict with their freedom of movement laws. The former France international was ordered to pay £8.8million ($11.2m) to Lokomotiv Moscow after terminating his contract early. His search for a new team was then made more difficult as FIFA rules meant any club would have to contribute to what Diarra was paying as part of any deal.

    WHAT THE COURT SAID

The Court of Justice of the European Union were eventually handed the case and ruled that players like Diarra and others could seek compensation.

Diarra's lawyer said: "All professional players have been affected by these illegal rules [in force since 2001] and can therefore now seek compensation for their losses. We are convinced that this 'price to pay' for violating EU law will – at last – force FIFA to submit to the EU rule of law and speed up the modernisation of governance.FIFA's immunity is over, there will be a before and after in [football] governance after the EU [court] ruling."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The court ruling highlights a significant issue in the world of football and shows a clear lack of modernisation when it comes to player contracts. FIFA said it was satisfied that they were managing the transfer system legally but are holding back from commenting further until they have considered the ECJ's decision.

The decision could spark huge change in the transfer market. More and more players could now be owed compensation from past difficulties when moving clubs and any new contracts drawn up will now consider the potential consequences of player welfare and freedom of movement.

Alessia Russo's early-season form a reminder that Arsenal and England star remains a work in progress – but there are reasons for optimism as Lioness aims for '20-goal striker' target

The striker will be frustrated she didn't score against Manchester City on Sunday, but her performances for the Gunners suggest improvements

There was a moment on Sunday when it looked like Alessia Russo was primed to grab the equaliser Arsenal were chasing in their Women's Super League opener against Manchester City. Brought on as a substitute just after the hour mark, with the score 2-1 to the visitors, it was 10 minutes later that the England star found herself through on goal and with all the time in the world to pick her spot.

Yet, to the frustration of herself as well as most inside the Emirates Stadium, it was an opportunity that ended with Russo throwing her hands to her face almost bewildered by her own decision-making.

It was a great ball over the top by Emily Fox that found Russo, one which completely caught out City centre-back Alanna Kennedy. By the time Russo latched onto the pass, her marker was a good five yards behind her, another covering defender, Kerstin Casparij, had too much ground to make up and Ayaka Yamashita, the City goalkeeper, couldn't decide whether to race out or not. The Arsenal striker was through.

Yet, despite the space and time she had, Russo seemed to panic. As she reached the edge of the box, she fired a tame shot into the grateful arms of Yamashita, spurning a golden opportunity to level the scores. Her reaction showed that she knew what a big chance it was and that she couldn't believe she hadn't taken it.

Fortunately, in the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter so much. A few minutes later, Beth Mead got the goal to level the scores at 2-2, with the spoils shared between two sides expected to battle for the WSL title. However, it was a reminder that, despite being the first-choice No.9 for both Arsenal and England, Russo is very much still a work in progress when it comes to fulfilling her potential in the role.

Getty ImagesUps and downs

Similar reminders were also on show last week, when Arsenal suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Hacken in the first leg of their Champions League second-round qualifier. There were flashes of what Russo does so well – playing with her back to goal, getting shots off when defenders don't expect them, picking up good positions – but none of that resulted in a goal that Arsenal's dominance suggested they would find.

On the contrary, her performances in the first round of qualifying were much more encouraging. Against Rangers, Russo didn't have a lot of space to operate in, as the Scottish side spent most of the game defending, but she worked incredibly hard and got a goal her effort deserved. A few days later, against Rosenborg, she was unlucky not to be on the scoresheet again, hitting the woodwork twice in a bright display.

How sharp she has looked in the first few weeks of the Gunners' campaign, and also on their U.S. pre-season tour, was what made Sunday's chance stand out even more, really. After plenty of positive signs, this was just a little reminder of how there is still work to be done.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesOn a journey

Russo can often prompt polarising opinions from fans, be they supporters of Arsenal, England or someone else entirely. Some are in the camp with Gunners head coach Jonas Eidevall, believing that she can become a 20-goal striker. Others are sceptical about whether that is possible.

As with most things in sport, the truth of where she is at in her bid to hit such expectations is somewhere in the middle. While some of Russo's performances show that she really does have the potential to get there – her wonderful goal-poaching against the Washington Spirit last month was a great piece of evidence – she's still on a journey to being that player consistently.

In the same way that her highs shouldn't fool anyone into thinking she is the finished product, the lows shouldn't be used to summarise her whole game either.

Getty ImagesChanging her game

What Eidevall would likely say about Sunday is that it was good to see Russo in that position, one-on-one with Yamashita, and that it is encouraging that she has been in those goal-scoring positions several times through the start of Arsenal's season. That might sound like faint praise but, as anyone who has watched the striker for a few years will know, it's a really positive part of her recent growth.

"What is important with Alessia is developing and playing and the goal-scoring positions she increasingly finds herself in," he explained this summer. "I think as a forward, that should be your aim all the time, to be in the right positions, because if you are, the goals come as a consequence. I said early on that her finishing ability is the best that I have ever worked with. If she is getting enough goal-scoring opportunities, goals are sure to happen. I think you see this summer, with the Lionesses as well, that she gets into those positions more frequently now and that is going to be important for us and also for Alessia."

It was something that Eidevall elaborated on further when speaking to ahead of the Gunners' pre-season friendly with Chelsea. "If you've seen her game in the past, I think she's been quite a drifting forward," he added. "She's been out a lot on the flanks, working balls. I know Sarina [Wiegman] has worked with her in that in England and I'm working with her in that at Arsenal to be in more central positions, be more often in what we call the 'goal zone', and she manages to do that more often and that leads to her being involved in more goal-scoring opportunities. That, combined with her finishing ability, obviously results in scoring more goals as well."

Getty ImagesImproving her numbers

It certainly felt like Russo made progress in a positioning sense through last season – and the numbers back it up. In the WSL, the averages of all of her key metrics in this respect were up in the second half of Arsenal's season compared to the first – those being touches in the opposition's box, total shots, shots on target, expected goals (xG) and goals. She was outperforming her xG from January onwards as well, having underperformed with regards to it in the first half the campaign. That's a testament to the work done by herself, Eidevall, Wiegman and other members of Arsenal and England's coaching staff, like Kelly Smith, the Gunners' icon who has been helping Russo a lot since joining Eidevall's team.

“We work with the positioning and making sure you get into those situations more often, by having the right position and the right angle and making the most out of it," the Arsenal boss explained last season, offering an insight into how he and his staff are trying to help Russo become more of a fox in the box.

"The amount of touches you get as a No.9 is, in most teams, the most limited amount of touches for all the outfield players. It is not about increasing those touches, it is about increasing the quality of those touches. That is generally what you need to work on with forward players. Everyone would like the ball a bit more, but the reality in football is that area is going to be more restricted. You will have fewer touches so it is about dealing with that reality, having fewer touches and not getting impatient and going towards the ball in the wrong moment, but instead anticipating the right moment.”

That's also something that shows in the numbers, as Russo's average total touches decreased as the 2023-24 WSL season went on, despite her average touches in the opposition's box increasing.

Ange sees Tottenham star as weak link and eyes move for £50m+ replacement

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has identified one player as a "weak link" in his team and personally wants a £55.6 million star to replace him this summer.

Spurs ready to back Postecoglou with key summer signings

The Australian's debut season in the Spurs dugout can be seen as a successful one overall, with his brand of high-pressing, forward-thinking football winning over plenty of admirers at N17 – both inside and outside the club.

Tottenham now offered £17m new midfielder who Pochettino wanted in 2019

Even though Tottenham missed out on Champions League football next season, European football is still in the bag, which is a huge improvement from Antonio Conte's disastrous final campaign in charge of the club before Postecoglou's arrival.

The Lilywhites head coach has also repeatedly stated that a finish in the top four was far less important than the overall progression of his side in a footballing sense.

“My position on it is not so much, particularly this year, where we finish, it’s what kind of team we are, because if we finish fourth and we’re 25 points off the top, I’m not sure that’s the kind of trajectory we want to be on," said Postecoglou on fourth place in early April.

Sheffield United 0-3 Tottenham

Tottenham 0-2 Man City

Tottenham 2-1 Burnley

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

“It’s part of making sure that we’re all focussed on what the ultimate ambition is. If we finish fourth this year, what it does show is that we’re progressing and we’ve made improvements, but that’s not the end goal. That’s why, for me, it’s much more important how we play between now and the end of the year, and how we finish.

"Then, we assess things. If we finish fourth and I feel we’ve made some progress and we’re set up for next year, then I’ll be pleased with that.”

While Postecoglou will be unfazed by finishing fifth, he has also been adamant that the Tottenham squad needs to undergo "drastic" change this summer. Spurs are ready to back their manager with key signings to kickstart Postecoglou's rebuild, with many players also up for sale. This list of surplus Spurs squad members apparently includes forward Richarlison, despite the Brazilian's haul of 11 goals and four assists in the Premier League alone

Ange outlines Richarlison as Spurs weak link as he eyes Sesko

As per information relayed by TEAMtalk, Postecoglou has run out of patience with Richarlison and believes he is a "weak link" going forward. RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, as a result, is attracting their real interest.

Benjamin Sesko

Postecoglou apparently thinks Sesko is a "perfect upgrade" on Richarlison, and the latter is said to be the subject of admiration in Saudi Arabia. Pro League champions Al Hilal are thought to be in pole position to sign Richarlison, as per TT, amid claims they could splash out as much as £50 million to sign him from Tottenham.

Sesko's release clause stands at around £55.6 million, so Richarlison's sale to the Middle East could mean that Spurs may not even spend that much on the 6 foot 5 centre-forward when taking into account net spend.

Will Dani Olmo play against Rayo Vallecano? Barcelona facing more frustration in struggle to register new €55m signing

Barcelona still haven't registered Dani Olmo to play and now another La Liga game against Rayo Vallecano is rapidly approaching.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Olmo is at serious risk of having to miss a third La Liga game this season because Barcelona's financial limitations have stopped them from registering him to play. reports the Euro 2024 winner is now "likely" to still be unavailable for the trip to Madrid to face Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday night.

  • AFP

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The apparent failure to comply with La Liga's financial regulations comes even after offloading Ilkay Gundogan, Vitor Roque, Clement Lenglet and Mikayil Faye in recent days has reduced the club's wage bill, although only Gundogan and Lenglet were registered first-team players. Barcelona are stuck on '1:4' spending rules, which only allows them to spend 25% of money they save or bring in, as opposed to the normal '1:1'.

  • WHAT HANSI FLICK SAID

Publicly, head coach Hansi Flick spoke ahead of the game with optimism that now appears set to be dashed: "I am always hopeful. I also hoped for it for the last game. It would be brilliant to have him to face Rayo Vallecano. Those are things that the player and the squad can't control. We speak about it, we know it's something difficult here in Barcelona. I trust the club and hope he can be registered by tomorrow. Any player who can't play will be unhappy, that’s normal. But he knows why that's the case here, and if he is available he'll be 100 per cent ready."

    WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

Worryingly, even though Barcelona have successfully signed Olmo from RB Leipzig, they are still bound by the impending transfer deadline. If he isn't registered to play by the time the window closes, it will be January before the club gets another chance. Given that the swathe of departures in the last few days hasn't done it, more hastily-arranged exits could be required.

PIF could be outbid by just £1.7m for Newcastle target Robin Le Normand

Newcastle United have suffered a blow with the news that they could be outbid by just £1.7m for the signing of a defensive transfer target this summer.

Newcastle in need of defensive reinforcements

Eddie Howe must wonder what he's done to suffer such injury woes within his squad this season, with so many fitness issues playing a part in their struggles in the Premier League, certainly compared to last year's brilliance in the competition.

The heart of Newcastle's defence has been a major issue for much of the campaign, with Sven Botman their most important player in that area of the pitch, but missing big chunks of action. The Dutchman's season is over after suffering ACL damage recently, and he could even struggle to return before the end of the year.

Jamaal Lascelles for Newcastle.

Exactly the same applies to Jamaal Lascelles, who was forced off in last weekend's 4-3 win at home to West Ham, and it will be some time before he is back on the pitch. It leaves Howe with a dearth of options at centre-back between now and May, and even beyond the summer, highlighting the importance of bringing in reinforcements.

Sporting CP stars Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande have emerged as two standout options for Newcastle in the summer, with the pair both highly-rated young centre-backs with big futures.

It does look as though they have suffered a setback in their pursuit of one defender, however, following a new update.

Newcastle suffer Robin Le Normand blow

According to Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are interested in signing Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad, but could be outbid by Napoli.

The centre-back is seen as a target for the Magpies, but the reigning Serie A champions are willing to pay €32m (£27.4m) compared to Newcastle's expected attempt at €30m (£25.7m), potentially harming their chances of snapping him up.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Le Normand has a £51.4m release clause in his current deal, but Sociedad do seem open to negotiate that fee down a little. Missing out on the 27-year-old would be disappointing for Newcastle, especially by such a fine margin, but there is always the hope that the appeal of the Premier League ends up working in their favour.

Lasith Embuldeniya takes five but Zimbabwe in control

Lasith Embuldeniya completed a second five-wicket haul in Test cricket, and Sri Lanka’s attack finally made headway, but Zimbabwe still ended day two in a position of strength in Harare, thanks in part to a late Sri Lankan wicket.Nine batsmen fell on Monday in total, in comparison to the two on the stolid first day. The pitch was beginning to show hints of deterioration and life. Where there had been virtually no spin on Sunday, there was at least modest grip today for Embuldeniya to exploit. After Zimbabwe had been bowled out for 358 early in the second session, Donald Tiripano then delivered the ball of the match so far, getting a length ball to jag dramatically back at opener Oshada Fernando, to breach his defences and send middle stump cartwheeling. It seems likely that ball had struck a widening crack.Still 316 runs ahead, and with Sri Lanka one down now, Zimbabwe can still dream of a healthy first-innings lead overnight. Tiripano was chief among those pushing their cause forward on day two, first hitting 44 not out from No. 8, and joining debutant Victor Nyauchi to put up a 30-run last-wicket stand to further defy a Sri Lanka side that had been made to field for 139 overs (it would be 148 by the time the innings was done). His dismissal of Fernando, which he produced in his first over of the match, then buoyed Zimbabwe just before stumps, and will have worried the Sri Lanka batsmen looking on. Sikandar Raza also made a confident 41 through the course of the afternoon, and was the only Zimbabwe batsman to strike at better than 50.It was Embuldeniya, though, who did most to bring what was a sleepy Test to life on Monday. In the morning session, he artfully lured Sean Williams to push at a floated, wide delivery, and took his outside edge, which was snaffled by the wicketkeeper. He then took three wickets in the afternoon session to complete his haul (he had also dismissed Prince Masvaure on day one), first having Regis Chakabva caught by a tumbling Angelo Mathews at mid-on, then spinning one past the advancing Raza, before turning a ball between the bat and pad of Kyle Jarvis to clatter off stump. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given he is the lead spinner, Embuldeniya bowled 42 overs in the innings, which comprised more than 28% of the overs delivered by Sri Lanka. His five wickets cost 114 runs. Before Embuldeniya warmed to his work, however, it had been seamer Suranga Lakmal who put most pressure on Zimbabwe. Bowling with a still new-ish second new ball early in the day, he troubled left-hander Craig Ervine by coming around the wicket, and then dismissed Brendan Taylor for 21 with a ball that nipped back into the batsman’s front pad. Ervine, who had started the day on 55, would survive Lakmal’s first spell, but not the second, dragging a back-of-a-length delivery back on to his stumps to be dismissed on 85 – the highest score on the Zimbabwe card. Later, Lakmal would also shut down Zimbabwe’s pesky last-wicket stand, and would finish with figures of 3 for 53.Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne played out 30 balls in mostly uneventful fashion before stumps, and had Kusal Mendis for company. Bad light was called soon after 5pm.

Spurs must bench 4/10 ace who had fewer touches than Vicario vs Newcastle

St James' Park has become a venue that Tottenham Hotspur will now dread attending, with last year's 6-1 defeat being followed by a 4-0 loss this weekend to Newcastle United.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were completely off the pace from minute one, with each away player just an actor in the Anthony Gordon show.

In truth, it was an afternoon to completely forget for the Lilywhites, with defensive mistakes and the blunt attack combining to create an embarrassing outcome.

A handful of Spurs players have been given plenty of criticism for their performances, including Pedro Porro, but there was one individual who was just as bad.

Pedro Porro’s performance against Newcastle

The Spanish right-back has been a reliable performer this season for the Australian, showing defensive security and taking on attacking responsibility, as shown by his seven league assists.

However, his performance against the Magpies was one to forget, with The Evening Standard's Dom Smith handing him a 4/10 rating for his struggles.

The former Sporting star unfortunately played a huge role in Newcastle’s second goal, with an under-hit back pass playing Gordon through on goal, and he was often out of position defensively.

To top off his performance, Porro was substituted just after the break with a hamstring injury, but it’s currently unknown quite how long he’ll be out for.

Bentancur struggled yet again against Newcastle

Rodrigo Bentancur has had to wait patiently for minutes this season, with the midfield duo of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma often being the first-choice pairing for Postecoglou.

The former Juventus ace’s terrible injury history will not have helped his chances of securing himself a spot in the side, with the midfielder missing 49 games over the last two seasons.

Rodrigo Bentancur warming up for Tottenham

Therefore, the Uruguayan has only started nine Premier League games this campaign, which means that it was important for him to impress against Eddie Howe’s side on Saturday.

However, that unfortunately wasn’t the case, with The Evening Standard also rating Bentancur a 4/10 for his performance, and his statistics certainly suggest he found it difficult to perform, ultimately leaving the field of play with fewer touches than goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicaro (42 vs 51).

From the first minute to the last, Tottenham dominated the tie from a possession perspective, which in theory should have made Bentancur’s afternoon much easier, particularly when on the ball.

But that wasn’t the case, as the number 30 was rather complacent throughout, having a pass accuracy of 83% and losing the ball seven times.

Furthermore, Bentancur also struggled with the intensity of the Newcastle attack and midfield, losing eight duels and being dribbled past on three occasions.

Rodrigo Bentancur.

The fact that he was subbed off just before the hour mark highlighted just how little impact the 26-year-old had on his side, and after that performance, it’s difficult to see him keeping his place in the starting side over the next few weeks.
