Grace Harris announced herself on the 2025 Vitality Blast with a blistering half-century and three wickets as Surrey made it two from two with a 32-run win over Hampshire at the Kia Oval.Hot off the plane the Australia international smashed 63 in 35 balls with four sixes and five fours. Harris shared half-century stands with Danni Wyatt-Hodge (62 from 41) and Paige Scholfield (49 from 18) – all this after Wyatt-Hodge and skipper Bryony Smith (33) posted 73 for the opening wicket. The fearsome onslaught carried Surrey to 213 for 4, Freya Davies taking 2 for 36 for the visitors, who rued four dropped catches and a bungled run-out attempt of Harris when she’d made just 1.Hampshire’s chase was heroic, led by Ella McCaughan’s classy 81, and supported by 29 from skipper Georgia Adams, but Harris (3-18) dismissed both in the space of three balls to cap a stunning debut as the Hawks finished on 181 for 8.After a sedate start, Smith blasted three sixes in quick succession, while Wyatt-Hodge, following a shaky series against West Indies for England, also cleared the ropes.Wyatt-Hodge was dropped twice on 30 and 35 before Smith holed out at midwicket off opposing skipper Adams. Harris should have gone soon afterwards when confusion left both batters at the same end, but a poor throw was fumbled by wicketkeeper Rhianna Southby and Harris was reprieved. She duly cashed in, raising Surrey’s hundred with six over mid-on, while Wyatt-Hodge was missed for a third time by Mary Taylor – a tough caught and bowled – before reaching 50 from 35 balls. The England opener eventually fell to a catch off Davies, but Harris forged on, two more maximums taking her to 50 from 27 balls. And while her innings ended tamely from a paddle to short fine leg, Schofield took up the baton with three sixes of her own, the last from the final ball of the innings to finish one short of 50.In-form Maia Bouchier began the chase with a straight six before holing out to a catch on the fence before the first over was done. Charlie Knott, too, flickered briefly and although she cut Tilly Corteen-Coleman into the hands of Wyatt-Hodge at cover, the visitors were 64 for 2 after six.Freya Kemp nicked one from Stonehouse through to wicketkeeper Kira Chathli and a maiden from Phoebe Franklin further cranked up the pressure. But McCaughan kept up the breathless chase, crisp driving and sweeping taking her to a polished fifty complete with 10 fours and Franklin spilt a skier to reprieve Adams as the tension mounted. With rain falling the 50-partnership came up in 33 balls and 85 were needed from the last seven.Smith failed to cling on to a tough chance at mid-off with McCaughan on 65, but Harris had her caught and bowled for 81 and when Adams perished two balls later to a stunning catch by Schofield, Hampshire were destined to fall short.

Kevin De Bruyne undergoes surgery on hamstring with Napoli star ruled out for rest of the year

Kevin De Bruyne has undergone successful surgery in Antwerp after suffering a serious hamstring injury during Napoli’s clash against Inter last weekend. The Belgian midfielder, who was forced off just moments after scoring, is now expected to be sidelined for around four months, ruling him out for the rest of 2025 and leaving Napoli short in midfield depth.

De Bruyne’s hamstring blow confirmed after Inter clash

Napoli have confirmed that Belgian superstar De Bruyne underwent surgery on his right hamstring in Antwerp following the injury he sustained during the 3-1 victory over Inter. The Belgian was forced off midway through the first half, moments after opening the scoring from the penalty spot.

Scans later revealed a “high-grade lesion to the biceps femoris muscle” in his right thigh, the same area that had troubled him during his Manchester City days. The 34-year-old was immediately flown to Belgium for further evaluation and, as per Napoli’s official statement, “the operation was a complete success.”

“Everything went well, brilliantly in fact,” said De Bruyne’s trusted physiotherapist Lieven Maesschalck, confirming that the player will begin the first phase of rehabilitation at the ‘Move to Cure’ facility in Antwerp, the same centre used by several top Belgian internationals.

The midfielder, who joined Napoli this summer after leaving Manchester City on a free transfer, is now expected to miss at least four months of action, effectively ruling him out until early 2026.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesDe Bruyne’s recurring hamstring troubles return

This marks the second major hamstring operation of De Bruyne’s career. In August 2023, he underwent a similar procedure after suffering a severe tear in his right leg. However, doctors have clarified that this latest injury is “not in the same location,” which could slightly reduce the overall recovery timeline.

Napoli’s medical staff, together with head coach Antonio Conte and the player himself, agreed on surgery after initial conservative treatment options were ruled out. Conte was reportedly adamant about prioritising De Bruyne’s long-term recovery over a rushed return, given Napoli’s intense winter fixture list and the player’s importance to the squad.

For De Bruyne, the setback is particularly painful after an encouraging start to life in Italy. He had scored four goals in eight Serie A appearances and was quickly establishing himself as the creative fulcrum of Conte’s midfield.

Napoli’s midfield depth

This latest injury comes at a time when Napoli are already battling a growing list of absentees. Stanislav Lobotka, Amir Rrahmani and Romelu Lukaku are also sidelined, leaving boss Conte with limited midfield options. The club may now need to rely heavily on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa in the coming months, with youth prospects expected to feature more prominently in Serie A fixtures.

For De Bruyne personally, the timing is unfortunate but not disastrous, as his recovery timeline aligns with the run-up to the 2026 World Cup, meaning he should be fit and match-ready for Belgium’s campaign in North America if all goes to plan.

Meanwhile, Napoli echoed that optimism in their official statement: “As planned, Kevin De Bruyne underwent surgery today in Antwerp following a high-grade injury to his right thigh biceps femoris muscle. The operation was a complete success. De Bruyne will continue the first phase of his post-surgical rehabilitation in Belgium.”

The club, however, stopped short of providing a specific return date. Internally, staff expect the midfielder to return to full training by February, depending on how quickly he responds to physiotherapy.

AFPConte forced into tactical reshuffle ahead of crucial months

Napoli return to Serie A action this weekend when they host seventh-placed Como, but De Bruyne’s absence will force Conte into an early tactical rethink. The club’s medical department will continue to monitor De Bruyne’s progress remotely, with Napoli planning to send physiotherapists to Belgium for weekly check-ins. A gradual return is expected, starting with light ball work by January before reintegration into team training the following month.

With Napoli still leading Serie A with 21 points, maintaining their form without their marquee summer signing will be crucial. For De Bruyne, the focus now turns to recovery, and ensuring his comeback strengthens both his club’s title push and Belgium’s World Cup preparations.

USWNT's Trinity Rodman diagnosed with MCL sprain, avoids serious injury after tearful exit in Washington Spirit win

Trinity Rodman has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 MCL sprain, having seemingly avoided a more serious injury after being helped off the field in tears during Wednesday's 4-0 win over Monterrey in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. There has been no timetable set for her return, but Rodman is expected to miss the U.S. women's national team's upcoming friendlies.

    An untimely injury

Rodman's injury came just hours after she was named to the USWNT's latest squad. The Spirit winger has not been with the national team since April due to a long-term back injury.

Rodman was seen in tears as she was helped off the field during Wednesday's match, with the winger seemingly unable to put pressure on her right leg. Later in the evening, she was seen on crutches while wearing a brace on her knee. Many were left fearing the worst, but Spirit boss Adrian Gonzalez provided something of a positive update, even if it now seems that Rodman could end up missing at least part of the NWSL playoffs.

"She's at the facility today starting the rehab; she's doing good," Gonzalez said. "The results that we got are the best scenario. Obviously, an injury is not always a good situation. It's not as bad as it could be. She's starting now the rehab.

"She has an MCL sprain. It's not too big, too much, but we need to see how she's doing every day, start the rehab today, and try to support her in this situation."

    The situation

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Gonzalez offered some insight into Rodman's injury, but was unable to provide an exact timetable for her recovery.

"All players are different," Gonzalez said. "We are taking care of every player as an individual in terms of how we prepare [for] the weeks, the games, and trying to individualize as much as possible the loads. Obviously, every player has a different background, and we always are taking care of those details.

"Right now, we need to focus on day by day, try to help her to recover, to heal as best as possible, and let's see how she's progressing every day."

    Tough break for USWNT

The injury will be bad news for Emma Hayes and the USWNT, who were looking forward to welcoming Rodman back into the fold after several months away from the team. Rodman had missed time with the Spirit from April to August battling a recurring back injury, but the winger had been back to her best since returning a few weeks back and now has seven goal contributions in under 1,000 minutes of gametime.

"I know she's excited to come back in and play for a national team, but she's doing it in a place where I think she's had to build a lot of foundational work around her back," Hayes said on Wednesday, hours before Rodman suffered her injury. "She's one of the best players in the world, and we've had to play without her for more than a year. So I'm, of course, super excited that she's back in – but most importantly that she's here with us in a healthy place."

    Championship rematch ahead…

The Spirit are set to be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NWSL playoffs, which are set to kick off in three weeks time. Last season, the club made it all the way to the NWSL Championship game before falling to the Orlando Pride in the season finale.

The Spirit are set to face last season's Champions in a final rematch on Saturday before concluding the season on Nov. 2 with a visit to the Utah Royals.

Arsenal place bid for bargain Piero Hincapie alternative as club respond

Arsenal are widely reported to be pursuing a late deal for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, but sporting director Andrea Berta is known to have a plan B.

Hincapie has already agreed personal terms and gave his resounding ‘yes’ to Mikel Arteta’s project at N5, according to reliable media sources, and this move will have a correlating effect on defender Jakub Kiwior’s exit to FC Porto.

Many believed Arsenal were done and dusted for this window after sensationally hijacking Tottenham’s deal for Eberechi Eze, but with Kiwior potentially departing, Berta is lining up a replacement for the Poland international.

Kiwior deputised excellently in the absence of Gabriel Magalhaes.when the Brazilian was injured towards the back end of 2024/2025, and Arteta reportedly viewed the 25-year-old as an ‘important’ player in his squad as a result.

Ipswich Town'sGeorgeHirstin action with Arsenal's Jakub Kiwior

Once, or if, the ex-Spezia starlet leaves for Portugal, Arsenal need a replacement and solid back-up to the likes of Gabriel and William Saliba – especially if they’re serious about ending their two-decade-long wait for a Premier League title.

As Arteta found out last season, injuries can take a major toll on their charge, so the Spaniard cannot risk relying on Saliba and Gabriel to stay fit all season long – as that is very unlikely to be the case.

Their move for Hincapie makes perfect sense, with the Ecuador international fresh off a solid campaign at Leverkusen and proven at the top level.

However, the 23-year-old also commands a price tag of around £52 million, and it remains to be seen whether the Bundesliga side will sell to the Gunners this late in the transfer window.

While Hincapie is keen on the move, Leverkusen remains a major obstacle, and a potential alternative who’s been on Berta’s radar comes in the form of Palmeiras starlet Luis Benedetti.

Arsenal have made Luis Benedetti offer to Palmeiras

The 19-year-old is vastly inexperienced compared to Hincapie, making just a handful of senior appearances for Palmeiras, but he’s been praised by sections of the media as a “towering” and “aggressive” rising star defender.

According to journalists Diego Firmino and Felipe Lemos, sharing a scoop to TV Espirito, it is believed that Arsenal have offered around £8.5 million for Benedetti, but it was a no from Palmeiras, who are seeking £13 million plus bonuses to sell the teenager.

The Brazilian interestingly works with the same representatives as Arsenal defender Gabriel, so that connection could help them to facilitate a deal if Arteta’s side opt to go back in for Benedetti.

Lanning seeks WPL glory without 'changing too much' at Delhi Capitals

They enter this WPL after losing back-to-back finals, as Lanning looks to work on “just some small things here and there”

Two seasons, two top-of-the-table finishes. Two finals, but no trophies. Delhi Capitals (DC) came close to title wins in WPL 2023 and 2024, before falling short in the final against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, respectively. But for captain Meg Lanning, continuing to do what they’ve done the last two seasons along with “a few little changes” is all the team needs to go one step ahead and clinch the title in 2025.”We’ve had two good seasons without obviously being able to finish it off the way we would have liked in winning the title,” Lanning said. “I guess the key for us is maintaining what we’ve been doing well. We think we have been playing some really good cricket, and doing a lot of things right. We’re just evolving and making a few little changes here and there that we think will make a big difference, and hopefully allows us to take that next step. It’s not [a] big shift from us.”We’ve added some new players, and also the players who have been here previously have also improved and gotten better as well. We feel like we’re [at] a really good spot. It’s not [about] changing too much. We’ve been doing a lot right. It’s just some small things here and there to to take us to the next step.”Related

Shafali focuses on 'playing long innings' as she eyes India comeback

Lanning has continued to be part of franchise leagues and domestic cricket after announcing her international retirement in 2023. Not playing for Australia has given her plenty of time at home, which she enjoys, but being around young players during franchise-based tournaments and giving them advice has been gratifying, Lanning admitted. Playing these leagues before a tournament like WPL also helps her get into the “rhythm”.Lanning is not only entering this WPL season as the tournament’s highest-ever run-getter – she has 676 runs across two seasons – but also on the back of some superb scores in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), Australia’s domestic 50-over competition, where she averaged 51.14 in eight games.”Playing matches is important; there’s nothing quite like being out in the middle and being in a good rhythm with that,” she said. “I feel like those games are great for me in that respect. I feel like I’m in a good spot with my game. I always enjoy playing and batting over here in India. I’ve had some success in the past. So far, the couple [of] days I’ve been here, it’s been nice to just get used to the conditions again, and just be really clear on what my plan is and how I want to go about it.”I think having experienced international cricket for so long, I’ve picked up different things along the way on what works and what doesn’t. And I guess now I’ve got the opportunity to work with – particularly back home, but also in tournaments like this – younger players, and try and pass on some of the knowledge that I’ve picked up not just on the field but [also] off the field – in terms of how you can manage yourself with the pressures that come with playing cricket at this level.”So that’s something I try to do with any team I play in now is pass on some of that knowledge and answer any questions that any of the other players [have]. Everybody here wants to learn and ask questions, and I really loved that about the environment.”Meg Lanning on Shafali Verma: “She looks like she’s in really good touch, and enjoying herself and having fun too”•Delhi Capitals

‘I’ve got the best seat in the house’ – Lanning on batting alongside ShafaliAmong the biggest positives for DC over the last two seasons has been the Lanning-Shafali Verma opening partnership. Lanning has been the solid batter at one end with a regular flow of runs while Shafali has gone for the big shots, and together, they have broken several partnership records. So far, they have put up three 100-plus stands in the tournament, and also hold the record of the highest-ever partnership of 162, which they put up against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023, in the tournament. Lanning hopes to repeat the feat this season as well, adding how much she enjoys playing with Shafali.Shafali has been in terrific form, having returned to domestic cricket after being dropped from the Indian team in November last year. She finished as the top run-getter in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy and the One Day Challenger Trophy.”I love batting with Shafali,” Lanning said. “She often puts on a very entertaining show, and I’ve got the best seat in the house watching from the other end most of the time. In the practice game, she did a very similar thing a few days ago. She looks like she’s in really good touch, and enjoying herself and having fun too, which I think is really important. So for me, just watching her play with freedom, express herself…when she does that, that plays a really important role for our team.”I always enjoy batting with her; we get on really well. Hopefully, this season can continue on through from where we have been the first two.”

The next Diangana: West Brom express interest in "first-class" EFL talent

Despite a late red card being picked up by Darnell Furlong, West Bromwich Albion kicked off their fresh tenure under Ryan Mason with a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Up next in the Championship, however, the Baggies have a tough away trip on the cards to Wrexham, who will be reeling themselves after a late 2-1 slip-up to Southampton at St. Mary’s.

Portsmouth and Stoke City then see out August as West Brom’s next opponents, with the second-tier table no doubt an intriguing read by the end of the action-packed month.

One or two new faces might even be donning Baggies’ blue and white for these tense contests, as Mason and Co. now weigh up a move for this former EFL ace to join the building.

West Brom express interest in ex-EFL attacker

It has been a lively transfer window for the West Midlands side so far.

The main notable purchase to date has been Aune Heggebo leaving Brann behind for pastures new in England for around the £4.7m price range, with the Nordic centre-forward already up and running in the EFL when he assisted Isaac Price’s goal on the opening day.

Away from this standout buy, the Championship promotion candidates have also been linked with some exciting new additions, with Cadiz attacker Chris Ramos reportedly on their radar to compete with Heggebo, presumably.

A fresh report by Hayters TV has also revealed that West Brom are contemplating dipping their toes into the German market to land St Pauli attacker Dapo Afolayan.

The report states that Mason’s men have expressed an interest in snapping up the Bundesliga forward, but further interest is also there from second-tier rivals Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers, and Swansea City.

Having once ripped up the EFL with Bolton Wanderers, Afolayan could welcome a return to familiar shores with the Baggies, as the Championship outfit attempt to secure their next Grady Diangana by landing the 27-year-old’s services.

West Brom winger Grady Diangana.

How Afolayan can be the next Diangana

Mason underwent a clear-out of some of West Brom’s most experienced EFL personnel this summer as Diangana left the Hawthorns behind at the expiry of his contract.

This must have been a sad exit for the Congolese international who had amassed 26 goals and 22 assists for the Baggies from 206 appearances, as per Transfermarkt, with a creative hole in the side now needing to be filled by a new, gung-ho forward capable of playing down both the left and right flanks.

Afolayan might just be what West Brom desire, therefore, away from sticking with what they already have, when you consider his blistering exploits for Bolton in a number of different attacking positions.

In total for the Trotters, the 27-year-old would fire home a hefty 21 goals and pick up nine assists from 101 appearances, with a further 16 efforts finding the back of the net in Germany when plying his trade for St. Pauli, as three of those came about in the Bundesliga just last season.

The London-born attacker’s similarities to Diangana are even clearer to see when studying the table above, with Afolayan spreading his career goals and assists all across the forward positions, as the St Pauli number 17 even gifts Mason another option up top.

Diangana also lined up as a lone striker on occasion at the Hawthorns – as seen in a quickfire four goals coming his way from this spot on the pitch from just seven outings – with Afolayan also capable as a number ten, too, much like his former West Ham United counterpart.

Coincidentally, the 27-year-old also came through the Hammers academy system before making a name for himself elsewhere, with a hope he can blossom into a Championship star – like Diangana – by following his career path even more closely.

Once lauded for his “first-class” attitude by former Bolton boss Ian Evatt, Mason will hope adding in Afolayan before September’s deadline is yet another sprinkle of quality that pushes his side into the promotion reckoning.

Terms agreed: Wolves breakthrough in move for "number 10" to replace Cunha

Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed terms with a new “number 10” who could become Matheus Cunha’s replacement at Molineux.

Wolves aiming to replace Cunha after Man Utd transfer

The Old Gold are in need of a summer rebuild following a disappointing 24/25 Premier League season coupled with the fact they have already lost two of their star players in the transfer market.

The first to leave was Cunha, with Manchester United triggering the Brazilian’s £62.5m release clause in the opening days of the window.

Matheus Cunha

Then, just before the first transfer window was set to shut, Manchester City announced a deal for Rayan Ait-Nouri, with the left-back being named in Pep Guardiola’s squad for the Club World Cup.

As a result, Vitor Pereira should have some money to spend, and they have been linked with numerous players in June. In attack, Wolves are thought to be showing an interest in FC St Gallen striker Willem Geubbels, who is valued at just £8.5m.

Meanwhile, when it comes to full-back signings, Wolves are keen on Vladimir Coufal, who has left West Ham United after five seasons and is available on a free transfer.

Pereira will be hoping the club can get some players through the door before the end of the month ahead of pre-season in July, and it looks as if Wolves have made a breakthrough in regards to an attacking addition.

Wolves agree terms with Celta Vigo’s Fer Lopez

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have agreed terms with Celta Vigo attacker Fer Lopez. A long-term deal has been agreed between the Old Gold and Lopez, and Wolves now just need to shake hands on a fee with Celta Vigo.

Interestingly, Lopez, who shares the same Gestifute agency as Jose Sa and other Wolves players, was spotted away on holiday with Wolves striker Jorgen Strand-Larsen, with the pair knowing each other from their time with the La Liga side.

Should Lopez join Larsen in the Midlands, Wolves would be getting a versatile left footed attacker. Capable of playing on the wing or as an attacking midfielder, ESPN editor David Cartlidge even described Lopez as a “unicorn”.

After coming through the Celta Vigo academy, Lopez, still just 21 years of age, has only made 20 senior appearances for his current employers, scoring four goals. However, a move to England with Wolves looks like it could be on the cards following the breakthrough on personal terms.
