Man United Dealt Big Rice Blow Amid Takeover Talks

It is unlikely that Manchester United will be able to sign Declan Rice this summer given the financial difficulties they are set to run into, journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed.

What's the latest on Declan Rice and Man United?

Arsenal were thought to be frontrunners for the signature of the West Ham captain, but recent reports have linked United with a move for the midfielder.

However, given the potentially record-breaking finances involved with this deal, as well as the number of teams interested in the £60k-per-week star, it is highly unlikely that United will be able to pull off a deal of this size in the summer.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Jacobs revealed that United will have to operate with a limited budget in order to adhere to financial fair play regulations, even if they change ownership.

"I think Manchester United have always admired Declan Rice, but budget is a problem," he stated.

"Even with a new owner. and a rich one, they are still bound by financial fair play and as a consequence, the most important thing for Manchester United is qualifying for the Champions League, because that's what's going to give them more leeway in terms of budget."

What do Man United need to do this summer amid takeover talks?

The first priority for United is to end the uncertainty over their ownership situation, as the Glazers weigh up multiple offers to buy the club, or majority shares from the family. This is something that appears to be getting slightly closer as Romano reported this morning that Jassim has placed a significantly improved offer for the club.

Erik ten Hag's side are on the verge of Champions League qualification, and this would significantly boost their spending ability this summer, but it may prove to be a tough window. But, such a significant outlay on Rice doesn't seem too likely regardless of any situation, with this possibly putting them under tight restraints when thinking of strengthening any other areas.

It seems that the transfer priority is a striker, with Harry Kane linked, whilst a midfielder may also be sought out, and depending on the futures of David De Gea, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, a goalkeeper and centre-back may also be targeted. Although, there have been reports suggesting that Rice is the No1 target.

United splashed the cash last summer to bring in Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Antony, and whilst they can expect a few signings this summer, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to have a similar outlay on such big transfers again.

Ten Hag has had a productive first season at Old Trafford, winning the Carabao Cup and reaching the FA Cup final, and if they can secure a Champions League spot, it will set up a good foundation for the Dutchman to build upon in the coming seasons.

Fans Think £40k-p/w Arsenal Man Is Signing New Deal

Arsenal fans have reacted online with excitement as they think an image of William Saliba suggests he’ll be signing a new contract.

What’s the latest contract news for Arsenal and William Saliba?

With the Gunners pushing for a Premier League title, their hopes have been severely dented by the Frenchman’s absence in recent weeks. Indeed, he started every league game of the season – dropping points in just six of 27 games – before picking up a back injury.

In the following seven games without Saliba since then, however, Arsenal have dropped from first to second; drawing three times and losing one match as well.

There is still hope he can play before the season comes to an end, but there is no guarantee that this will happen with manager Mikel Arteta wary about the player’s fitness.

The Spaniard recently told the press: “We are not yet [ruling him out for the season], because we are always hopeful and players are always pushing to play but if that is the case then we will announce that. Hopefully that will not be the case.”

With all that in mind, it’s clear just how important the £40k-p/w defender is to the team. Worryingly then for Arsenal, the 22-year-old is yet to commit to a new contract with his current deal set to expire in 2024 and some reports suggesting negotiations have reached an “impasse”.

However, a recent image appeared online and it shows that the player is making improvements to his north London home by installing a brand new gym.

After seeing the images, it’s safe to say the fanbase jumped to some excited conclusions as they assumed this proves the young centre-back is ready to settle down at the club for a while longer.

To be fair, ESPN have now reported Saliba is indeed on the verge of agreeing to an extension. But these supporters didn’t need that information to convince them, as the images of the player’s new gym seem to have been more than enough evidence.

Here are some of the best reactions…

It’s no doubt, these Arsenal fans were delighted.

Man United "In Talks" With "Incredible" £375k-p/w Star

Manchester United are "in talks" with David de Gea about a new contract, and he may remain the club's number-one goalkeeper next season, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

What's the latest Man United goalkeeper news?

Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has recently confirmed Man United are interested in signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer, although he will not come cheap, with the Serie A side set to demand at least €50m (£44m).

Football Insider have previously reported the Red Devils hold an interest in Leeds United's Illan Meslier, and they may have received a boost in the race for his signature, as journalist Pete O'Rourke claims he "might want to leave" this summer.

However, Meslier has been subject to criticism from the media for his recent performances, so Erik ten Hag could look at other potential options, having also held talks with the agent of Borussia Dortmund shot-stopper Gregor Kobel.

That said, there is seemingly every chance De Gea remains United's first choice next season, with Sheth recently giving GiveMeSport an update on his contract situation, saying:

"If David de Gea signs that new deal – they're in talks, there are also some reports that they are close to that new deal – then I would expect de Gea to remain as the number-one goalkeeper at United next season."

Should De Gea remain Man United's number one?

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Leicester City man Kasper Schmeichel recently heaped praise on the Spaniard, describing him as an "incredible goalkeeper", while also adding that he's "playing at a really high level with his feet" so far this season.

However, Ten Hag has been critical of the 32-year-old at times, claiming he "can't ignore" his poor distribution, and although the manager does believe he is "improving" in that aspect of the game, the statistics tell a different story.

David de Gea of Man United

The £375k-per-week earner has averaged just 33.15 touches per 90 over the past year, ranking in the 23rd percentile, which indicates his teammates are unwilling to give him the ball, due to his tendency to make mistakes when playing it out from the back.

In the Red Devils' 3-0 loss against Sevilla in the Europa League, the former Atletico Madrid man made an error leading to a goal, with Ben Foster claiming he "has to know better" than to give the ball to Harry Maguire in that area of the pitch.

As such, De Gea may not be a good fit for Ten Hag's style of play, and it is probably best if Man United sign a more suitable replacement in the summer.

BCCI scraps Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for new inter-zonal T20 league

The BCCI has decided to do scrap its domestic Twenty20 tournament, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, from the 2016-17 season and replace it with a new inter-zonal league. The new tournament will occupy the same slot in the domestic calendar as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which was played in January this year.

Ranji Trophy 2016-17 at neutral venues

The BCCI working committee has ratified the decision proposed by the board’s technical committee to play the Ranji Trophy at neutral venues. The idea was originally mooted by the technical committee, led by Sourav Ganguly, which had recommended the need for a radical idea to make the premier first-class tournament more competitive and discourage the growing trend of states offering underprepared pitches for home matches.
The idea received a favourable response from captains and coaches of domestic teams during a meeting on Thursday. A majority of them felt such a decision was inevitable considering the quality of pitches during a few games in the previous seasons, and the failure of match officials to impose a penalty for this.

“We have proposed that the T20 matches will be played on a zonal-league basis,” BCCI president Anurag Thakur said at the end of the board’s working committee meeting in Dharamsala on Friday. “The states can play these matches at any time of the year among themselves. Then a league will be started where the stakeholders would be the state units in the zone.”The new tournament will be divided into two stages – an inter-state one, followed by the main inter-zonal one. In the first stage, states within a zone will play T20 matches among themselves. Once that level is complete, every zone will have a board comprising one representative from each of the respective state associations. Members of the zonal board will appoint a CEO and selectors to pick a team for the main stage. For example, once state teams within the West Zone have finished their respective matches, their representatives can appoint a selection committee that will pick a team to compete with the other four zones. There could be an additional sixth team representing the affiliate states under the BCCI banner, but that has not yet been confirmed. The schedule for the main inter-zonal stage of the tournament is likely to be drawn up by the BCCI, but Thakur said the inter-state matches can be held anytime prior to the tournament. Incidentally, the new structure was not discussed at the captains and coaches meeting on Thursday. The format for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy comprised teams spread across four groups with the top two from each qualifying for the knockouts. When asked why the board decided to revamp the format, Thakur said the new tournament would provide an opportunity to youngsters and domestic players who were unable to participate in the IPL. He also said that the franchise-based leagues run by states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu would remain unaffected by this new tournament.”They can participate in that competitive tournament now,” Thakur said. “Rather than Syed Mushtaq Ali, the way it has been played, this new format will give more number of matches to the players and more glory and more money to the upcoming cricketers.”A BCCI official said that the idea to start the new zonal-league tournament came from Thakur, who presented a proposal to monetize the new tournament before the working committee.”He wants to find a sponsor for the tournament and market that,” the official said. “But that is not easy considering fans are interested in watching international stars and not domestic players,”The official also revealed that Thakur wants to resuscitate university cricket in a similar fashion by selling rights for the T20 University Cricket Championship. In 2013 the BCCI, along with the Indian government, had conducted the University Cricket Championship, an extension of the annual all-India inter-zone university Rohinton Baria Tournament, by selling the rights to NDTV and co-sponsor Toyota. However that venture was scrapped after one year.”The previous deal ended because there was no attraction for the sponsor. They were expecting that the BCCI would allow an international player in each team to create hype but that was not possible,” the official said.

Cottee Moots Potential West Ham Development Over Summer

West Ham United legend Tony Cottee has mooted potential movement over a possible takeover to come in the not-too-distant future.

Are West Ham safe from the drop?

It has not been an easy 2022/23 campaign for the Hammers by any means with the Londoners attempting to battle off relegation on the back of a seriously impressive season prior.

Indeed, with just three games remaining, the Irons have been able to open up a seven-point cushion on the drop zone which could well be enough to see them survive.

But matter off the field have also not been easy in east London with co-owner David Gold passing earlier in the year.

However, there could still be something to cheer about as they face a semi-final appearance in the Europa Conference League against AZ Alkmaar.

With the summer on the horizon, Cottee has been speaking on the We Are West Ham podcast where the topic of a potential takeover was raised:

(7:40) The focus as a football coach has been fully on staying in the Premier League, and you know, if that happens, which it should do, then I think we might see some movement in the summer in terms of what happens off the field.

"I haven't got any inside information I can share with you. I'd love to sit here and say that I know this is going to happen that's going to happen, but I don't know.

"I can only sort of speculate, like we all can really and, you know, I think ultimately there will be some movement. David Sullivan can obviously sell the club now without paying any penalties to the government. Matters have obviously been complicated by the sad loss of David Gold as well. So there's been a lot going on off the field as well as on the field."

Will West Ham be sold?

Over one year ago now, West Ham were involved in a potential takeover discussion with PAI Capital who were keen to acquire the club.

It was reported the party had proposed two bids to the current West Ham ownership but both efforts were knocked back with the club not for sale.

The report from Sky Sports claims Gold and Sullivan were not convinced that selling the club at the time was in the best interests of all involved at the club.

The managing partner of the group, Nasib Piriyev, even released a statement on their failed attempts to acquire the London club: "I am disappointed that we cannot conclude the deal as hoped, as we have some big ideas for the club.

declan-rice-west-ham-arsenal-transfer-thomas-partey-edu-partey

However, after what has gone on both on and off the field this season, it will be interesting to see whether Sullivan would be open to offloading the club to someone else.

Off-the-field matters aside, the performances have simply not been good enough this season and it could potentially require significant money to do so.

It is believed that Declan Rice could leave over the coming months which could fund a big chunk of that, but the fans may not be satisfied with simply reinvesting money brought in from player sales.

If West Ham are able to seal their top-flight status for another year, then perhaps it could be time for Sullivan to consider moving on.

However, if West Ham do taste European triumph, it will be interesting to see whether that could be the high which could bring an end to Sullivan's time or whether it only increases his taste for success at West Ham.

Beale Eyes Up Rangers Swoop For "Enthusiastic" Titan

When Glasgow Rangers signed defender Connor Goldson back in 2018 during the embryonic stages of Steven Gerrard’s tenure, it was looked upon as a solid signing and one that could significantly improve their defence ahead of a Premiership title tilt.

Fast-forward five years later and Goldson has become a mainstay at the heart of the Ibrox defence, making 261 appearances for the Light Blues, missing only 14 games during that time through injury, proving just how reliable he has been for the club.

The Englishman played a major role in the Rangers side that secured league title number 55 during the 2020/21 campaign, being part of a defence which conceded just 13 goals across 38 matches – and his importance to the side hasn't waned.

Michael Beale will be hoping to secure another defender from England who could potentially have a similar impact that Goldson has had and with the Gers linked with Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo ahead of the summer transfer window, he could perhaps be that player.

Could Rangers sign Jonathan Panzo this summer?

Having joined Forest for £1.5m in 2022 from French side Dijon, it remains to be seen just how much he could cost the Gers, but if he is available for around a similar sort of fee, it could be a solid investment from Beale.

The 42-year-old could certainly repeat Rangers’ Goldson masterclass by making a move for the young defender, especially following his impressive performances for Coventry City this term during his loan spell.

Being able to play as a centre-back or at left-back is an added bonus for the Light Blues, and Panzo has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.99/10 across 29 league appearances while making 1.7 interceptions and 1.6 tackles per game along with winning 58% of his total duels, indicating that he is strong in the tackle and these stats are fairly similar to Goldson’s, with the Rangers' defender winning 67% of his total duels while making 1.5 tackles per game, although he has made only 0.8 interceptions in the Premiership.

The 6 foot 2 Panzo was praised by Dave Rogers, his former U21 coach at Forest, who said: "He is a great professional. He's enthusiastic and has got good experience and energy too. He brings a great vibe to the dressing room too.

Blackburn's Sammie Szmodics in action with Coventry'sJonathanPanzo

"It's great to see Panzo getting more game time because he seems to be getting better and better each time he plays. It's been fantastic to have him with us and the boys have really enjoyed having him around. He's been great to coach."

Nearly five years on from signing an English defender who has gone on to become a reliable performer in the first team, could Beale repeat that masterclass this summer? Only time will tell.

Holder backs inexperienced WI squad to step up

West Indies captain Jason Holder said on the eve of the first Test match against India that he was confident in the abilities of the young group he was leading

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Antigua20-Jul-2016Only three members of West Indies’ 13-man squad for the first Test against India have played more than 20 Test matches. Six of them have either played four Tests or fewer, and two are yet to make their debuts. West Indies captain Jason Holder, who has himself played only 13 Tests, said on the eve of the match though that he was confident in the abilities of the young group he was leading.”Most of these guys have performed really well in the domestic competition,” Holder said. “You’ve got young Roston Chase, who’s in the squad for the first time. He averages around 40 in first-class cricket. You’ve got Shane Dowrich, who’s been doing well over the last few seasons. Leon Johnson had a really good season. Those are just a few names who did well back in the first-class competitions. So I think all of them are really eager for an opportunity and I’m very very eager to go into the competition with them.”The players, Holder said, were hungry to make a name for themselves.”I think what motivates this young group is that everyone is trying to make a mark on international scene. It’s a very young team. Many of us are looking at finding our way in international cricket. I think it’s important for the youngsters to just come in, to make their mark and solidify their place in the team, and to make a name for themselves. You know there is a rich legacy in West Indies cricket. Many of the young players are looking to make a legacy for themselves.”A lot of the inexperience in the West Indies team is concentrated in their bowling, following the loss of their long-time new-ball pair of Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach to retirement and non-selection respectively. Holder said he, as one of the four seamers in the squad, did not feel any specific pressure to step up and lead the bowling attack, but reiterated the need for all the quick bowlers to know their roles and perform them well.”You know, if you look at our side, we’ve got Miguel Cummins who’s come into the side, he’s done really well for the last two seasons in domestic cricket. You’ve got [Shannon] Gabriel, who’s been bowling really well, but has been struggling from injuries. He’s fit and ready to go. Carlos Brathwaite and myself, you know, are the two seamers and we are just looking to do what we’re asked to do.”I think it’s important that each one knows their role. You know Shannon’s obviously a fast and aggressive bowler. Miguel similarly. Myself and Carlos, we’re mainly the workhorses in the unit. You just have to know your role. I don’t think there’s pressure really. Once you know understand your role, you perform your role.”West Indies won the World T20 earlier this year, and were impressive in their recent ODI triangular series that also featured Australia and South Africa, beating both teams in the league stage and reaching the final. They have struggled to match that level of performance in Test cricket, with a number of their star players not featuring in the longest format. Holder said it was important for the team to keep improving steadily, while not expecting too much of them too soon.”You know that’s the ultimate aim [to be equally competitive in all three formats]. We’ve got a young side, and it’s good to see we have some young faces. We’re looking to build something. In the last series we played in Australia, we didn’t start really well. Moving on into the Test series, we got significantly better. All I stress and address with the guys is to keep improving. You can’t expect leaps and bounds, too much from a very young side. Once we get the steady progression in terms of improvement, I think we’ll move forward.”The last time West Indies played in Antigua, in April 2015, they saved a Test match against England courtesy an unbeaten fourth-innings hundred from Holder. Batting remains the second string in Holder’s bow, but in the days leading up to the Test against India, he has batted far more than he has bowled in the nets. Asked about this, he said he preferred to conserve himself for the long spells he often bowls in Test matches.”I’ve played a lot of cricket this year already. As I said, it’s about managing your body to get through a four-match Test series. I am a workhorse, so I don’t particularly like to bowl that much leading into a Test match. I like to save my energy for the Test match because I know I’ll be required to bowl quite a few overs. That’s how my preparation goes in terms of my bowling.”I try to bat a lot because I feel as though I need to pay a lot more attention there. That’s more of my secondary part of my training. I try to work really hard to get my footwork going and my balance going which I feel is the key to my success.”Asked about his team’s preparations to bowl against a batting line-up of India’s quality on pitches that are expected to play on the slower side, Holder reiterated what players and coaches from both sides have already stressed: the need for patience.”The name of Test cricket is discipline, when it comes to bowling,” he said. “Where we fell down in the past is not being as disciplined as we would like. We’ve stressed discipline and being patient for longer periods. We come in and string together a good session but we tend to falter or fall off going deeper into the day. So far, what I’ve seen in the nets I’m really, really pleased. The bowlers look good and we need to transfer that into the game.”

Aston Villa Could Sign ‘Unplayable’ £250k-p/w Star

Aston Villa have been the talk of a number of transfer rumours already leading up to the summer, as the end of the 2022/23 campaign is in sight.

The season has been a revelation for the Midlands club, who have shown great progress since the arrival of Unai Emery in October.

The Spaniard has taken Villa from a team with little direction loitering around the bottom third of the table, to European hopefuls with one game to go.

With just 90 minutes remaining of this joyous campaign at Villa Park, the club will endeavour to make changes to the squad this summer, with a host of talent already linked with a potential move.

The latest news has suggested that a current Premier League star could switch from Manchester to Birmingham to join Emery’s budding squad

What’s the latest on Anthony Martial to Aston Villa?

As reported by FootballTransfers, Manchester United forward Anthony Martial could be on the move this summer and could be a potential option for a loan deal at Villa Park.

The report understands that Villa are “weighing up” whether to bring the Frenchman to the club on a year-long loan with an option-to-buy.

The speculation comes as United’s movements in the transfer window are expected to focus on a forward that could see the 27-year-old become out of favour at Old Trafford.

What could Anthony Martial bring to Aston Villa?

When Martial signed from Monaco in 2015 for £36m, there were many questions asked over the price tag that made the 19-year-old British football’s most expensive teenager.

Almost eight years later, the forward has made 296 appearances for the Red Devils, as well as contributing to 140 goals through 53 assists and scoring 87 himself – as per Transfermarkt.

United have seen a lot of change at the club since his arrival, with a host of managers attempting to implement their ideas on the squad, which has worked less favourably for the Frenchman.

Man United's Anthony Martial

The 27-year-old has found his squad position in jeopardy due to extended spells on the sidelines due to injury and lack of form, linking him to a move away from the club having made just ten starts this campaign.

Despite being out-of-favour at Old Trafford, the Massy-born forward could be a worthy introduction to Emery’s system, and a suited partner to Ollie Watkins to lead the line.

Described as “unplayable” by former United man Lee Sharpe on TalkSPORT, the £250k-per-week forward has all the attributes to be a supporting striker or a number nine, highlighted by his passing and finishing abilities.

The Frenchman ranks in the top 5% of players in his position in Europe’s top five leagues in terms of frequency of assists, recording 0.26 per 90 – as per FBref, and also in best 14% for successful take-ons, showing that he is a superb outlet in the final third.

When speaking to The Athletic in April, Emery spoke of his wishes to sign another forward to partner Watkins, giving Martial space to replenish his form and showcase his expertise that could benefit key areas of the squad through depth and individual performance.

With the English forward having become a revelation under the current boss, scoring 15 times this term, the idea of another rampant threat such as Martial joining him in the attacking third is a mouthwatering one.

United bringing in another forward could almost certainly see the Frenchman depart, and a potential loan deal would be a strong route for Villa who will be trialling change this summer ahead of the Spaniard’s first full season in charge.
