'Can't believe how bad he is' – Roy Keane takes aim at Trent Alexander-Arnold after England defender scores in Finland win

Roy Keane offered a harsh assessment of Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive work after England's clash with Finland.

Keane hammered into Alexander-Arnold for his defending in England's shock 2-1 defeat against Greece on Thursday. The right-back has often faced criticism for his defensive work, despite his attacking worth. The Liverpool player has struggled to hold a consistent place in the England set up, often deployed in midfield under Gareth Southgate, but has responded with a stunning free-kick against Finland after starting at left-back for the first time in his career.

After it was raised that Alexander-Arnold had never played left-back for England or Liverpool previously, Keane said: "If you saw him the other night [against Greece] defending, it looked like he'd never played right-back before."

TELL ME MORE

Keane continued to lay into the 26-year-old's defensive qualities after England's 3-1 win. "I still can't believe how bad he is defensively and against a quality team he's going to get found out," the former Manchester United midfielder said.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While his attacking output has never been questioned, Alexander-Arnold is consistently scrutinised for his defensive work. Whether at Liverpool or with England, the defender is constantly criticised for his weaker work at the back. This has not stopped Real Madrid from courting their interest in Alexander-Arnold though and they may look to pounce with the defender's contract expiring next summer.

Enquiry made: Arsenal keen on "dominant" £42m Osimhen alternative

The transfer window is in full swing, and Arsenal look set for a big summer in which they could finally bridge the ever-closing gap between themselves and Manchester City in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta's side did incredibly well pushing the Sky Blues to the final day of the campaign last season, but they came up just short on the goalscoring front.

So, it's unsurprising to see them linked with a number of top-tier strikers at the moment, including Napoli's marksman extraordinaire, Victor Osimhen.

However, the latest forward touted for a move to the Emirates may well be a better option, and he certainly had a better season than the Nigerian.

Arsenal's striker search

According to recent reports from Italy, Arsenal have made an enquiry about Girona star Artem Dovbyk.

The report does not mention how much the Ukrainian striker may cost the Gunners, but a claim from Spain (via Sport Witness) earlier this week claimed that his contract has a release clause worth between €40m and €50m, or £34m to £42m in it.

It might not be a cheap signing, but considering Osimhen could cost up to £113m and Dovbyk's campaign last season, it could still be a bargain.

How Dovbyk compares to Osimhen

So, if the two options available to the Gunners at the moment are the Napoli and Girona stars, how do the pair stack up to one another? Well, from a pure output perspective, it's the latter who surprisingly comes out on top over the last year.

In his 41 games for Girona the "dominant" number nine, as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, scored 25 goals and provided ten assists, meaning he's averaged a goal involvement every 1.17 games in La Liga – which also saw him win the Golden Boot.

In contrast, the former LOSC Lillie gem scored 17 goals and provided four assists in 32 games last season, which equates to a goal involvement on average every 1.52 games.

Okay, so with it clear that the former SC Dnipro-1 ace is the more clinical forward of the pair at the moment, how do their striker-relevant underlying numbers compare?

Well, it's another clear win for the 26-year-old, as he comes out ahead in almost all metrics, such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, actual assists and non-penalty goals, passing accuracy, goal-creating actions and the number of goals scored per shot and shot on target, all per 90.

Moreover, besides having more impressive underlying numbers and goal involvements last season, the Cherkasy-born striker has a far better injury record.

Since the start of the 2020/21 season, he has missed just 11 games, whereas his potential competition has missed a massive 62 matches in the same period, and as they say, availability is the best ability.

Ultimately, while Osimhen is undoubtedly an incredibly talented number nine and would likely do an excellent job for Arsenal, his price and injury record are serious concerns, especially when Dobvyk enjoyed a better campaign last season and has no such injury concerns.

Ben Stokes set to arrive in UAE for IPL 2020 with Rajasthan Royals

Allrounder will arrive early on Sunday and will be in quarantine for six days as per IPL protocols

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Oct-2020

BCCI

England allrounder Ben Stokes is finally headed to the IPL from New Zealand, where he has spent the past month-and-a-half with his family. ESPNcricinfo understands Stokes will land in Dubai, where the Royals are based, early on Sunday. As per the IPL’s Covid-19 protocol Stokes will undergo the mandatory six-day quarantine, including clearing three tests, before he can link up with the Royals and be available for selection. On Saturday morning Stokes posted a picture with his parents on Instagram, along with a caption titled ‘goodbyes never get easier’.In August, mid-way into the Pakistan Test series, Stokes flew to New Zealand to be alongside his father Ged, who was detected recently with brain cancer. Stokes was granted compassionate leave by the ECB and missed not just the final two Tests and the limited-overs leg of the Pakistan series, but also the six-match white ball series against Australia.Upon landing in New Zealand, Stokes admitted leaving Pakistan series was the “right thing” he did from the “mental” point of view. The Royals have not yet commented on Stokes joining the squad, but the franchise has maintained the it would not rush the England allround back and give him “as much time as he wishes” before he was ready to play.”It’s a difficult scenario, so we’re giving him as much time as he needs, and connecting with him as best we can,” Royals head coach Andrew McDonald had told ESPNcricinfo days before the IPL started. While in Christchurch, Stokes had been readying for his return to competitive cricket by training with Sydenham Cricket Club, the first cricket club he played at back in New Zealand. “Been great being in Christchurch where it all began,” he said in another Instagram post. “Thanks to Sydenham Cricket for letting me use their facilities to bowl in.”Stokes’ arrival will shore up a slightly shaky middle order that is currently struggling for consistency. With Steven Smith and Jos Buttler opening the batting, the Royals have had to rely on the relative inexperience of Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia in the lower middle order, along with the out-of-form Robin Uthappa.

Wolves likely to bid for "monster" £30m Cunha replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers are still sweating over Pedro Neto's future at the club but last summer's exodus has placed Molineux in a good position in regard to profit and sustainability.

This season, Gary O'Neil triumphed in instilling his philosophy in testing circumstances and tearing through the upper echelon of the Premier League to avoid relegation comfortably.

But much hinges on the owners and their investment plans this summer, with Neto and perhaps one or two others likely to sit at the heartland of transfer speculation. Moreover, compounding the problem, Old Gold supporters were left disconcerted by a steep hike in ticket pricing. A burst of positivity, it could be argued, is paramount.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

Luckily, O'Neil is committed to improving his first team this summer and is pushing Wolves to fight rivals for an exciting Premier League star.

Wolves eyeing Premier League star

According to reports relayed by Yorkshire Post, Wolves are one of four top-flight teams set to make bids for Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah, with Fulham – who would be willing to pay £30m for the centre-forward – Wolves and Crystal Palace also in the mix.

Arsenal are fighting to secure the signature of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in a £55m deal, which would surely see the Englishman's intermittent opportunities limited further.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the 25-year-old but will reluctantly let him leave, and with O'Neil searching for firepower up front, this might just be the perfect move to make, though Wolves would need to match Fulham's prospective offer.

Eddie Nketiah's style of play

Once described as a "monster" by journalist Aaron Catterson-Reid, Nketiah has completed 168 appearances, scoring 38 goals, for Arsenal after graduating from the youth academy, enjoying a successful but fleeting loan spell with Leeds United and even earning his first international cap for England.

This season, however, despite netting a brilliant hat-trick against Sheffield United in October in the Premier League, the 5 foot 9 striker was restricted to just six substitute displays onward from February, clearly not included at the heart of Arteta's ambitious plans.

Nketiah had also netted in two of Arsenal's opening three top-flight fixtures but as Kai Havertz went from strength to strength so too did the Nketiah's match action suffer diminishment. With Sesko fiercely pursued and Gabriel Jesus vying for a place at No. 9, Wolves' target is clearly heading toward the exit in north London.

But Wolves want his signature for a reason. As per FBref, Nketiah ranks among the top 9% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 and the top 12% for pass completion, highlighting his strength as a frontal focal point and his ball-playing skill.

The £100k-per-week star is blessed with natural athletic prowess and all the tools to succeed as the leading man at a Premier League team, and while Wolves have been widely reported to be closing in on a move for Southampton's Che Adams, who is out of contract at St. Mary's this month, signing a player of Nketiah's ilk would be a major win.

Nketiah could lead the line for years to come at Molineux, providing O'Neil with a reliable goal threat to avoid the dreaded drop zone and instead tear through the division and toward the upper end.

Why Wolves are interested in Eddie Nketiah

There's perhaps a tacit outward air at Molineux that suggests Neto is going to leave this summer. The Portugal winger still has three years on his current deal but £60m is no small sum and sharp strategic transfer moves could make such an influx of cash worthwhile.

But of course, Nketiah is not a winger, and thus would not be a direct replacement for Neto, should he leave. Instead, the Gunners ace could find himself taking Matheus Cunha's role in the Old Gold first team, with the Brazilian attracting attention after his resounding 2023/24 campaign.

As per The Mirror, Manchester United are hot on the £60m-rated Cunha's trail and are even prepared to double his £60k-per-week salary. It's early days but if Sir Jim Ratcliffe's nosing-around turns into concrete interest, it might be hard for Wolves to turn the lucrative suitor away.

And there is no point denying that it would feel like a detrimental blow. Cunha has been positively magnificent this season, raising his game considerably and now ranking among the top 10% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 5% for progressive carries, the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 14% for tackles per 90.

He's been pretty good, and while there are myriad benefits to partnering Nketiah with the Brazilian, O'Neil's transfer target is technically proficient and is mutable in his playing style, capable of adopting a dynamic role that, yes, focusses on his goalscoring but also incorporates creativity and enhances team synergy.

Praised for his "incredible impact" and as a "beast" by his Arsenal manager, Nketiah is of course aware of his bit-part place in the Emirates machine, and given that he is now entering the prime of his career, surely he should prioritise playing time. His hat-trick this season emphasises the importance of finding a place to properly showcase his skills.

Leeds want to re-sign £30k-p/w player who scored at Elland Road last season

Leeds United are interested in re-signing a player who scored at Elland Road last season, according to The Athletic.

Leeds transfer rumours

It is another season in the Championship for the Whites following playoff heartbreak once more, with manager Daniel Farke, owners 49ers Enterprises, football advisor Nick Hammond and technical director Gretar Steinsson preparing for a busy summer.

"Unbelievable" player "open" to signing for Leeds from rivals

An approach has been made.

ByCharlie Smith Jun 13, 2024

The club may well need to cash in on a number of players to balance the books, with Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto all linked with moves away. However, there are also likely to be some arrivals, with chairman Paraag Marathe recently saying: “We have the funds that we need to do what we need to do.

"The reality of being in the Championship is that Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) plays a role. We also inherited a challenging situation, so naturally there are going to be some trade-offs. But also, we have a really good team, and it is not just about outs, but ins.

"We're looking at scouting possibilities and players that we can bring in. We will have to make some trade-offs because of P&S but we have the investment commitment to do what we need to do.”

And it looks as if the club are keen on re-signing a familiar face.

Leeds interested in re-signing Connor Roberts

The Athletic’s Nancy Froston shared an in-depth story regarding Leeds’ transfer plans on Thursday and mentioned Wales defenders Joe Rodon and Connor Roberts. The pair were on loan at Elland Road last season, with the latter joining in January from Burnley. The Whites had Rodon for the entire campaign and are interested in landing the centre-back again from Tottenham, and it is added that Leeds are also keen on Roberts.

The report states that Roberts’ “future could depend on who fills the managerial vacancy at Turf Moor, following Vincent Kompany’s appointment at Bayern Munich”. Roberts, on £30,000-a-week at Turf Moor, is entering the final 12 months of his Burnley contract, and it looks as if Leeds are looking to take full advantage of that with a summer swoop.

Connor Roberts

He provided crucial experience and cover for Gray in the final months of the season, even contributing with an Elland Road goal against Leicester City and an assist away to Huddersfield Town in 14 appearances. Farke is clearly a fan of Roberts, saying after securing the right-back’s services in the January window:

“So we wanted to bring a specialist in. We found one with Connor Roberts, in a perfect age, experience, we wanted to add a bit of experience. Great, great CV. Even last season he was in the Team of the Year in the Championship as a right-back. One hundred and eighty games on this level, 40 Premier League games, top-class character, available right now and also fully committed. I’m pretty happy with him.”

The German could be signing Roberts’ praises once again if the 49ers Enterprises can get a deal over the line in the coming months.

Newcastle considering Michael Olise alternative to replace £60k-p/w forward

Newcastle United are looking at alternatives to Crystal Palace's Michael Olise as they consider selling a £60,000-a-week fan favourite to make room for a new arrival, according to reports.

Newcastle transfer rumours

Newcastle were plagued with injury issues in the 2023/24 season, and this was very much reflected in their form across the campaign. The Magpies were eventually able to put together a string of positive results to secure a 7th-place finish in the Premier League, but Manchester United's FA Cup win means that there will be no European in the North East next term.

Newcastle can replace Bruce signing with deal for £28m "goal machine"

Newcastle are looking to make more additions after the arrival of Lloyd Kelly.

ByEthan Lamb Jun 15, 2024

In turn, Eddie Howe and co. are no doubt eager to strengthen this summer as they battle it out to once again finish inside the Premier League's top four. Newcastle's summer plans are already in full swing, with the club having already signed out-of-contract Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, who is understood to have penned a five-year deal with the club.

In terms of further potential incomings at St James' Park, former Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi is believed to be of interest, Ferran Torres has been linked with a move to St James' Park, with Barcelona potentially willing to move him on, and Juventus' Samuel Iling-Junior has also been backed to join the Magpies before the 2024/25 season gets underway.

Former Arsenal player Matteo Guendouzi

Newcastle eye Michael Olise alternative to replace £60k-p/w star

Another star who has been linked with a move to St James' Park of late is Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, with recent reports claiming Newcastle, Chelsea and Bayern Munich had all made contact with the Eagles regarding a move for the Englishman.

However, given Newcastle have no European football in 2024/25 and both Bayern and the Blues are more established top European sides, the Magpies may face a tough battle when it comes to persuading the player, who has a reported £60m release clause, to join them.

In turn, it is not too surprising to see alternative transfer targets emerging for Newcastle. Give Me Sport report that the Magpies know Olise may be too "ambitious" of a target, but definitely want to sign a right-winger this summer, so are looking at Juventus and Italy star Federico Chiesa instead.

federico-chiesa-liverpool-saka-transfer-news-premier-league

Chiesa has already earned high praise from England, including from Manchester United and Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand, who previously labelled the winger as "fantastic".

"He’s just a fantastic footballer," he said. "The intensity with which he plays with, we saw in the Euros he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament."

The report adds that Chiesa could be available for half the price of Olise, which would put his transfer fee at about £30m.

This is perhaps seen as a low sum for a player of his quality, but his contract is set to expire in 2025, which means the Turin-based out may need to sell this summer or risk losing him for free. To help fund a move for the Italian, the Magpies are said to be willing to part ways with Miguel Almiron, who is currently earning £60,000-a-week on a deal that runs until 2026.
