Imagine him & Mowatt: West Brom looking at "excellent" Yokuslu replacement

West Bromwich Albion supporters will be very happy with how their early Championship fixtures have unfolded, with four points from a possible six picked up against tough opponents in the form of Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United.

Carlos Corberan's men stood firm against the Whites in the stalemate draw at the Hawthorns, as the Baggies ground out a share of the points, with ex-Leeds man Alex Mowatt at least attempting to create some rare openings through the middle of the park.

Notching up 99 touches against his former employers, the West Brom number 27 couldn't quite find that killer pass, despite dominating the ball.

He could be joined by a new midfield partner very shortly, away from the likes of Jayson Molumby who has been next to him in the holding positions recently, who he knows from his prior Barnsley days.

West Brom weighing up move for new midfielder

First reported by the Barnsley Chronicle, Tykes midfielder Callum Styles looks set to leave Oakwell for good this summer with a £2m price tag slapped on his head.

Further developments by journalist Alan Nixon indicate that this could well involve the South Yorkshire club gaining a West Brom player in exchange for the adopted Hungary international to jump ship to the Hawthorns, with Modou Faal rumoured to be the Baggies man that could move down to League One in a swap deal.

Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles.

Not exactly setting the world alight on loan with Sunderland last season in the second tier, Corberan could be the manager to get the best out of the tricky 5 foot 8 gem again, who has shone at the level before with his current employers.

What Styles can offer West Brom

Still lacking depth in central midfield, with Okay Yokuslu no longer on the books, Styles' adaptability will also be a major strength the Spaniard admires from his many standout traits, with the 24-year-old capable of playing down the left as a winger or full-back.

At the Hawthorns, it's likely he will be lining up next to Mowatt in a central midfield capacity, however, with the one-time Millwall man already aware of his potential teammate's strengths from their time together in South Yorkshire.

Styles is well accustomed to the demands of Championship football, having made 136 career appearances in the tough division to date, with an impressive goal and assist haul of 16 combined.

His main standout season at the level was during the 20/21 season, with four goals and four assists registered from 42 games as the Tykes dared to dream about an unbelievable promotion up to the Premier League, with 37 of those clashes seeing him remarkably line up down the left channel, as opposed to filling a spot in the centre.

The "excellent" West Brom target – as he was described by ex-Barnsley manager Neill Collins – could do a job next to Mowatt in Corberan's trusty 4-2-3-1 set-up though.

Glancing at his numbers from that particular season (above), there is a grit present in his skill-set that will make Yokuslu's absence feel less obvious.

Moreover, his well-rounded game means he would also be able to create chances aplenty – alongside Mowatt – whilst also chipping in with a strike of his own from time to time, with a sublime rocket, like the one below, up his sleeve.

Corberan will, no doubt, be encouraged by what he's seen of his side in the infancy of this new second-tier season, considering the likes of Conor Townsend and Brandon Thomas-Asante have also left the building, alongside Yokuslu.

Still, adding in some more quality and depth won't do the threadbare Baggies camp any harm, and Styles would be a worthwhile addition if everything slots into place for the move to go through.

West Brom hit gold on Hawthorns ace who's now worth more than Thomas-Asante

Bid submitted: Southampton make offer worth £10m+ to sign 22 y/o midfielder

Southampton have seen a loan bid with an obligation to buy for an international midfielder rejected.

The Saints are preparing for life back in the Premier League after securing promotion to the top flight via the Championship play-offs last season. Russell Martin’s side get their league season underway with a testing trip to St. James’ Park on Saturday as they face Newcastle United.

The Southampton boss will be hoping his side can get off to a good start, and the club’s transfer business has put them in a good position to tackle the upcoming campaign.

Their next Pelle: Southampton set to bid for exciting new forward

Southampton could soon seal a deal for this imposing centre forward.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 13, 2024 Southampton’s summer signings

As expected, given that they are a side that has just come from the Championship, Southampton have been rather busy so far in this transfer window. The Saints have made a staggering 12 new signings so far, as Martin makes sure his side is equipped with enough experience and quality.

The new arrivals have been a mixture of transfers that have cost the Saints a large sum of money, or they have been arrivals that have come via free transfer. Southampton have brought in the likes of Charlie Taylor, Wellington, and Adam Lallana, who obviously has a history with the Saints, on free transfers.

Meanwhile, the club has also made some additions that have pulled the purse strings, as they have signed players such as Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes, who were both at the club last season, as well as Ronnie Edwards, Nathan Wood, and most recently Ben Brereton-Diaz.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United but now remains in the Premier League with Southampton, having signed a four-year contract. The Chilean believes everything has aligned for him to join Southampton.

He said: “I'm absolutely buzzing. It's been smooth these past couple of days, and I'm happy to get everything sorted and signed. I'm really excited to meet everyone, it's great to be involved with this great club.

"Watching the club when I was younger, it was always in the Premier League. Obviously, last season, the way the team played, they went down, but they bounced straight back up as a team. Also, the gaffer as well – everything has aligned together, and I think it's an amazing club. I can’t wait to get started."

But despite already bringing in a lot of players, Southampton don’t look like they are stopping there, as they eye a deal for a midfielder.

Southampton see bid for Mandela Keita rejected

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Southampton have seen a bid for Mandela Keita rejected by Belgian side Royal Antwerp. The offer is said to have been a loan bid with a mandatory option to buy for around €12 million (£10.2 million).

The Belgian side is said to be open to making progress on the deal that would see Keita move to England and join the Saints.

But as well as Southampton being keen on signing the player, Tavolieri goes on to add that other Premier League teams are said to be watching him this summer, as he attracts interest. The 22-year-old, who is a Belgium international, only joined Royal Antwerp on a permanent basis this summer, but he has spent the last 18 months on loan at the club from OH Leuven.

£196k-per-week Chelsea ace pushing to leave as club eye deal by next week

A £196,000-per-week Chelsea player is apparently pushing to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with a highly interested side hoping to wrap up his signing and include him in their matchday squads by next week.

Chelsea players who could leave before deadline day

There has been a lot of noise this week on who could still leave Chelsea before the transfer cut-off past August 30.

Chelsea decide to sell 2023 signing with Madueke after £54m Pedro Neto deal

The latter is being heavily linked with a move to Newcastle.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 16, 2024

Following the signing of Pedro Neto from Wolves in a £54 million deal (including add-ons), there is a belief that Chelsea are open to selling Noni Madueke, and have placed a multi-million pound price tag on his head amid interest from Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, striker Armando Broja doesn't appear to have a future at Chelsea, and may well depart west London sooner rather than later. Left-back and occasional captain Ben Chilwell is also reportedly considering his future, following Enzo Maresca's suggestion that they haven't found his best position.

“The Chilly situation is a bit delicate," said Maresca on Chilwell.

“We are trying to find a solution for him in terms of a position. He probably needs a bit of time. By delicate I mean in terms of finding his best position, not in terms of [his future at the club].

“We want players that can perform at 100 percent in their positions. I am sure, for instance, Malo [Gusto] and Reece [James] can both do the work required of them in the next two-three days and they can both finish with more assists, or be more dangerous, than they were in the past. In that position, they are good enough to make ‘last passes’ or get some assists because their quality is very good.”

As well as the aforementioned, Angelo Gabriel, Conor Gallagher, Cesare Casadei, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah and Raheem Sterling have all been linked with exits within the last fortnight. Perhaps the most high-profile potential departee of them all, and one who Todd Boehly is apparently desperate to get rid of, is wantaway striker Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku pushing to leave as Napoli eye Chelsea agreement by next week

Napoli and Chelsea have been in widely reported talks over selling the £196,000-per-week ace (GiveMeSport), as the Belgian eyes a reunion with Antonio Conte in Serie A, and it is believed Victor Osimhen could well come the other way as well.

Romelu Lukaku

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Lukaku is pushing to leave Chelsea and Napoli are hopeful they can sign him by next week.

The 31-year-old, called "world-class" by ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, has proved over multiple seasons in Italy that the division is his spiritual home.

Lukaku's racked up an impressive 70 in 129 Serie A appearances, across spells at both Inter Milan and Roma, so a move to Napoli seems like the perfect match for him after a torrid three years back at Chelsea.

Are Barcelona a one-man team? Shocking stat reveals dependence on 17-year-old Lamine Yamal as Hansi Flick's side drop more points in La Liga title race

Barcelona dropped further points in Lamine Yamal's absence as astonishing stat indicates a reliance on the young teenager.

Barcelona capitulate in 2-2 draw with Celta VigoYamal out with ankle injuryFlick's side struggle without teenagerFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱AFPWHAT HAPPENED?

Barcelona slipped to a disappointing 2-2 draw on Saturday, despite leading Celta Vigo 2-0 with less than 10 minutes to go. A Jules Kounde error and a Marc Casado red card put them on the back foot, and Celta grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 86th minute. Without Yamal starting on the right wing, Barcelona looked bereft of ideas, which has resulted in questions over whether the Catalan club have become too reliant on the teenager.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Yamal was confirmed to have suffered an ankle injury following Barcelona's 5-2 win over Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League in early November, and he hasn't played a minute for the club since. Barcelona have won 15 of the 16 games Yamal has played in this season, with the one exception a shock 4-2 defeat to Osasuna in which he came off the bench. On the three occasions he has not been named in the starting lineup this term, Barcelona have been defeated, losing to Monaco in the Champions League as well as to Real Sociedad and now Celta domestically.

DID YOU KNOW?

Yamal is continuing to break more records and is notably Barcelona's youngest ever goal scorer, bagging his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw with Granada in October 2023.

Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and the 25 best Barcelona players of the 21st century so far – ranked

GOAL counts down the finest footballers to have lined out for the Catalan club since 2000 – based on talent, trophies, longevity and impact

Few clubs have experienced as many glorious highs and devastating lows as Barcelona since the turn of the century. The Catalans have enjoyed an era of unprecedented success, with four of their five European Cup wins coming between 2006 and 2015 thanks primarily to a group of exceptional academy graduates led by the greatest player of all time, Lionel Messi.

However, the Argentine's departure in 2021 came during one of the darkest periods in the club's history, with Messi's exit made a necessity because of gross mismanagement and reckless spending that left the Blaugrana on the verge of bankruptcy.

So, to say the past 25 years have been eventful would be a colossal understatement, particularly as Barca have always managed to put outstanding talents on the field no matter what was going on off it – as underlined by the strength of the current squad.

But who are the best players to have played for the Catalans since 2000? GOAL counts down its top 25 below and, as always, we'd encourage you let us know your thoughts – and gripes – in the comments section!

    25Eric Abidal

One of the most inspirational figures in Barcelona's history, Eric Abidal played all 90 minutes of the 2011 Champions League final just three months after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour in his liver. In a touching gesture, captain Carles Puyol allowed the Frenchman to be the first to lift the trophy at Wembley, with Abidal admitting, "It was an incredible moment."

Abidal, who was a versatile, intelligent and imposing defender, was subsequently forced to undergo a liver transplant, but showed even more of the remarkable resolve he had demonstrated previously by returning to the field shortly before the expiration of his Barca contract in 2013. "Abidal has been with us for six years and he is a very special person," then-president Sandro Rosell said. "He has won our hearts."

    24Ivan Rakitic

Ivan Rakitic was treated shamefully during his final year at Barcelona, who tried desperately to force him out of the club. "I'm not a sack of potatoes who you can do anything with,” he fumed in April 2020. The Blaugrana's desire to remove him from the wage bill was understandable, given their financial situation and the arrival of Frenkie de Jong, but Rakitic deserved far better treatment and much more respect.

The all-action midfielder featured in at least 50 games for five of his six seasons at Camp Nou and was a key member of Luis Enrique's treble-winning team, even scoring the opener in the Champions League final win over Juventus. Jose Mourinho had a point, then, when labelled him "one of the most underrated players in the world" in 2019.

    23Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski is only approaching the midway point of his third year at Barcelona and it's fair to say that he was nowhere near his very best during the 2023-24 campaign. The striker still netted 26 times during his 'off' season, though, and he now has 79 goals in just 113 games.

Lewandowski still has some way to go to become a true Barca legend, but he's already got one Pichichi award for firing the Catalans to the Spanish title in 2022-23, and he's now perfectly placed to repeat the feat, after scoring 15 goals in 14 Liga games to start the current campaign.

"It's amazing to have such a period where you're always scoring," Blaugrana boss Hansi Flick said, "but, for me, he's the best there is in front of goal."

    22Patrick Kluivert

Patrick Kluivert helped Barcelona win La Liga in his first season after joining from AC Milan in the summer of 1998, but a painful period of underachievement followed for the Catalan club – despite the best efforts of the Dutch striker.

As a player schooled in the Ajax academy, Kluivert was a technically excellent centre-forward who was also blessed with height and strength, which he used to both score goals, and create them. The Netherlands international also formed a productive partnership with Rivaldo during his time at Camp Nou and hit 81 goals between the start of the 2000-01 season and his departure four years later.

No reason Steven Smith shouldn't captain Australia – Usman Khawaja

‘He’s our number one batsman, he’s done it before, he’s paid for his mistakes’

Whether Steven Smith leads Australia again continues to be a topic of debate•Getty Images

Usman Khawaja has called for Steven Smith to be given the captaincy of Australia’s Test side once Tim Paine’s tenure is over if he covets the role.Smith, who led the team for nearly three years, was stripped of the captaincy and banned from leadership roles for two years in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal in 2018.Smith’s leadership ban expired last March but he has since been overlooked for roles in the Test and white-ball teams.”If Steve Smith wants to captain Australia, I think he should captain Australia,” Queensland captain Khawaja told reporters in Brisbane on Friday.”He’s our number one batsman, he’s done it before, he’s paid for his mistakes, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be in line for the captaincy if wants to do it.”Paine succeeded Smith as captain and led Australia to their Ashes triumph in England in 2019 and briefly the top of the Test rankingsBut his leadership was criticised at times during the series against India and Australia’s 2-1 loss on home soil against the injury-ravaged tourists turned the spotlight on him although national selector Trevor Hohns said his position was “never in question.”Fast bowler Pat Cummins is vice-captain of the Test team and Marnus Labuschagne is regarded by some as a candidate for the captaincy despite no experience at professional level. Cummins has recently been made captain of the New South Wales one-day side.Smith, who won a third Allan Border Medal as the country’s top male cricketer, said last month the captaincy was “not on [his] radar” and the decision was out of his hands.Various people have talked of a “process” that needs to be gone through before Smith can be considered for the role again.Paine recently said he was sure Smith would like another crack at the job. “There’s no doubt he would like to do it, I think, but we’ll just wait and see what happens in the next six to 12 months,” he told SEN radio. “One of the things we’re trying to do is develop more leaders in our team and Steve Smith is certainly one of those.”Unless England win the final Test against India to level the series, which would allow Australia to sneak into the World Test Championship final, they will not play Test cricket again until the end of the year following the postponement of the South Africa tour.

Wolves eye £24,000-p/w Kilman replacement whose club are ready to cash in

Wolves have been linked with a move for another centre-back as Gary O'Neil looks to fill the Max Kilman shaped hole in his side's defence ahead of the new Premier League season, it has been reported.

Kilman's departure a major blow for Wolves

Though it was in some ways no surprise to see former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui return to Molineux to poach the man he made captain of the Old Gold, the move still came as a massive blow to O'Neil's side. An excellent defender, Kilman was also blessed with excellent durability, a fact that saw him play every minute of the 2023-24 campaign and miss just a single game across the last two seasons.

O'Neil's side are yet to even try and replace him this summer despite the new season kicking off in just three weeks' time, with the Wolves boss focussing on strengthening their frontline after it struggled across the 2023-24 campaign.

Now though, they are moving to shore up the heart of defence, if the latest reports are to be believed, and have earmarked the man to step into the void left by the former Wolves skipper.

Wolves eyeing up centre-back

That comes in the form of former Southampton defender Kevin Danso, who is set to leave current club RC Lens this summer and is attracting interest from across Europe. Foot Mercato [Via Sport Witness] claim that Wolves are "closely monitoring the situation" around the defender, who has long been linked with a move away from Lens.

Premier League, Liverpool news, Liverpool latest news, Liverpool update, Liverpool transfers, Liverpool transfer news, Kevin Danso

Danso was at the heart of Austria's EURO 2024 backline, appearing in three of their four games under Ralf Rangnick at the tournament. Standing at 6 foot 3, he has been described as a defender with "rapid recovery pace" who is also an "excellent progressor" and a "physical defender", according to football analyst Ben Mattiinson on X.

But the 25-year-old is free to leave Lens this summer, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri explaining earlier in the transfer window that the French side needs to sell players this summer to comply with financial fair play regulations.

It means that the French side are unlikely to demand the full reported 35m euro release clause written into Danso's £24k per week deal, and could well sell for less, which will come as music to the ears of any potential interested parties.

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 27, 2024

Wolves are not alone in their admiration of the centre-back though. The report adds that Danso "has suitors around Europe" before naming current European Champions Atalanta and Antonio Conte's Napoli, as well as West Ham, who remain on the hunt for another defender even after poaching Kilman from Molineux. It is added that Lens will "want at least €25m" (£21m) to part ways with the Austrian this summer.
