Napoli now ready to increase offer to sign "brave" £59m Man Utd star

In a ruthless mood, Manchester United could bid farewell to an attacking talent this month with a European giant now reportedly ready to increase their offer and secure their target.

Man Utd transfer news

Before the Red Devils can even think about welcoming incomings of their own, they must endure a January exodus of players. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen have become surplus to requirements with the former dropped ever since missing out on a place in Manchester United’s derby day victory over Manchester City. Now, he alongside a number of others must be shown the door this month.

At the start of the season, Rashford’s potential departure would have sent shockwaves throughout the Premier League. One managerial change later, however, it seems simply inevitable. But he may not be the only attacking star headed for the door.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, Napoli are ready to increase their offer to sign Alejandro Garnacho this month in what could see them egde closer to Manchester United’s reported £59m asking price.

Amorim wants Man Utd to sign "talented" Premier League star to replace Shaw

The Italians have certainly got money to burn after selling Kvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €70m (£59m) this month, but it remains to be seen whether they’ll spend the entirety of that fund on a replacement in the form of Garnarcho.

The winger, himself, meanwhile, reportedly wants out of Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order since Ruben Amorim’s arrival and could yet get his wish before the end of this month to follow in Diego Maradona’s footsteps and become the latest Argentine to become a Napoli star.

Man Utd should cash in on Garnacho

When he was scoring sensational overhead kicks under Erik ten Hag, the idea that Manchester United would be selling Garnacho a season later would have been absurd. But Napoli’s next bid could be too much to turn down.

The Red Devils desperately need to sell in order to welcome reinforcements of their own and players of Viktor Gyokeres’ calibre and that could mean sacrificing Garnacho.

The young winger once found himself at the centre of praise at Old Trafford when Ten Hag told reporters as relayed by Reuters: “I love to work with Garnacho. He’s a player who needs a challenge, he likes a challenge, he is very brave, he’s very confident, our job is to push him to high levels.

“He has high potential and now we have to get the potential out, therefore you have to work day by day.”

The days of that praise are seemingly over, however, with Amad Diallo instead stealing the spotlight and Garnacho potentially heading for a disappointing departure. Given how quickly Napoli will want to replace Kvaratskhelia too, their pursuit of the Manchester United one may well be as swift as possible this month.

Leeds employee has been told that "perfect" Whites star has broken a bone

Leeds United are marching on in their bid for promotion from the Championship but the latest update has brought some cause for concern on the injury front.

Leeds prepare for hectic fixture run

While the Whites find themselves five points clear, cautious optimism among supporters will remain stoic as the Yorkshire giants look to put the seal on promotion to the Premier League at the second attempt. This weekend, Leeds take on Millwall in a much-anticipated FA Cup tie at Elland Road between two sides with no love lost. However, league action is the priority for Daniel Farke, which may see the German boss rotate his squad for the Lions’ visit on Saturday.

Completing a short turnaround, they then make the trip to face Watford on Tuesday evening. Speaking ahead of the Whites’ latest clash Farke confirmed Patrick Bamford is the only notable absentee to face Millwall: “At the moment the only player who is not in team training is Patrick [Bamford], and for that, that’s the first step for him to return back to team training.

“It will happen at some point next week, we will see, it depends on the final stages of his rehab. Definitely not in the mix for Saturday, but all the others are available and for that all have a chance to be involved in the matchday squad.”

However, just because he he has a near clean bill of health to choose from, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t players struggling through the pain barrier to ensure they are fit and available to fight for promotion to the top-flight.

Joe Rodon's dedication to the Leeds United cause

Speaking on LUTV, commentator Bryn Law revealed that a family member revealed at half-time during Leeds United’s 2-0 victory over Coventry City that Joe Rodon has been playing with a broken hand, which has been an ongoing issue for the Wales international.

He stated on the live broadcast: “Broken hand he has, I was reliably informed by a member of the Rodon family at half-time. He has had the issue for quite a while, hence the fact that bandage has been there for quite a while.”

Putting his body on the line through incredible dedication, the Swansea-born central defender has been a standout in his 33 appearances for Leeds this campaign.

Previously hailed as ‘perfect role model of a modern-day defender’ by Farke, Rodon’s presence on the field could be the difference between his side being able to claim their place back in the limelight of the top flight.

Earning his stripes after moving to Yorkshire from Tottenham Hotspur, you get the impression that there is plenty more to come from the 27-year-old as the season reaches it’s business end.

Whether he can stay fit is another question, but the fact he has been able to play through a fairly painful injury suggests he has the robust qualities needed to satisfy the demand of a heavy domestic fixture schedule bestowed on Farke’s men.

Mitchell Marsh on one-day captaincy: 'Probably not…I'm out of the race'

The allrounder had been considered a possible replacement for Aaron Finch

AAP11-Oct-2022Australia’s search for a new limited-overs captain has not got any easier with Mitchell Marsh ruling himself out of the job.Marsh, viewed as one of the top contenders to replace Aaron Finch after his retirement from one-day cricket, says he would prefer to focus on his personal game rather than taking the leadership role.It leaves star batter David Warner as perhaps the leading candidate, although that would require Cricket Australia (CA) to overturn his leadership ban imposed in the wake of the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.Finch will consider his T20 future after the upcoming World Cup but should CA decide they want one captain across both codes he may have to hand over the role.Asked on Tuesday morning whether he would put up his hand for the one-day captaincy, Marsh said the role was not for him.”Probably not to be honest, I’m out of the race,” he said. “I’ve had to get the body right for this World Cup. The World Cup is such an exciting prospect for all of us, to worry about that sort of stuff [captaincy] is just not on my radar at the moment.”Cricket Australia has a decision to make after the World Cup…it’s really not something I’ve thought about.”While stopping short of a firm endorsement of Warner, Marsh acknowledged the 35-year-old could bring a lot to the job.”He’s a great leader among our group,” Marsh said. “As far as all the decisions go, I certainly steer clear of all those conversations. But he’s a great man to have in the squad.”Marsh crunched 36 in his now-usual No.3 role in the T20 series opener against England in Perth on Sunday. The teams will go head-to-head again on Wednesday at Canberra’s Manuka Oval.Allrounder Marsh did not bowl in Perth, but said it remained the plan for the World Cup.”The body’s feeling good at this stage,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll be right to bowl in the first warm-up game but with Stoin [Marcus Stoinis] back bowling now, it’s a bit of a luxury we can work as a team and really build towards the World Cup.”We’re going to get four overs out of us; some days it’s me, some days Stoin, and some days Maxi [Glenn Maxwell]. The best T20 teams in the world over the last five, six years, have that flexibility…we’re almost a team within a team.”

Amad has been named in Ruben Amorim's squad for United's Europa League semi-final first leg clash with Athletic. The winger was back on the training pitch at Carrington ahead of their trip to Spain, and could be in line to make his first appearance since February, when he sustained an injury before their clash with Tottenham. At the time, the injury was reported as being season-ending, but that does not appear to be the case.

T20 World Cup final: England vs Pakistan to be shown on Channel 4 in UK

The T20 World Cup final between England and Pakistan will be broadcast on free-to-air television in the UK and Ireland. While Sky Sports are exclusive UK rights holders to the tournament, it was announced on Thursday* that an agreement had been reached to share Sunday’s showpiece event at the MCG with Channel 4, as they did in 2019 for the 50-over World Cup final. The deal had been struck in principle before England’s semi-final against India, which Jos Buttler’s team won comfortably by 10 wickets. Sky will also show the final free on their Showcase channel, and were willing to partner with Channel 4 again after the success of three years ago, when England beat New Zealand in a nailbiter at Lord’s to win their first men’s 50-over title – a game that drew peak viewing figures of 8.3 million.Related

“We’d be immensely happy with that,” Buttler said in his post-match press conference in Adelaide. “That would be fantastic for the game in our country, as many eyes as we can get on that final would be great. That’d be brilliant if that happens. It’s important that we always look to grow our game and showcase cricket to the next generation especially, so we’d really welcome that if that was possible.”Channel 4 broadcast England’s tour of India in 2020-21, the first time Test cricket had been shown free-to-air in the UK since the 2005 Ashes. The BBC has also had rights to show a limited number of men’s and women’s T20 internationals since the start of the 2020 broadcast deal. The T20 World Cup final, which begins at 8am GMT, will see England and Pakistan once again do battle 30 years on from their famous MCG encounter in the final of the 50-over competition.Jonathan Licht, Sky Sports managing director, said: “We know the importance of this game, so we are pleased to be able to share this great sporting moment with our whole nation thanks to our strong relationship with Channel 4. Whether you’re supporting England or Pakistan, this will be one to remember.”Ian Katz, chief content officer at Channel 4, added: “We are thrilled that Channel 4 and Sky have struck this deal to make another great national sporting moment available on free-to-air television to audiences across the UK. As the days draw in, some thrilling international cricket from the southern hemisphere should offer some welcome cheer.”Several fixtures at the World Cup have been affected by bad weather and there is another poor forecast for Sunday. In the event that the final spills into Monday’s reserve day, it is understood that Channel 4 will still look to broadcast the game in full.* 1600 GMT – This story was updated with confirmation from Sky and Channel 4

Better than Balogun & Propper: Rangers make late bid to sign ‘man-mountain’

Will Rangers make any more signings this month?

So far, Rafael Fernandes, a 22-year-old centre-back is the Light Blues’ sole winter arrival, despite the fact Philippe Clement’s side sit a whopping ten points adrift run-away Premiership leaders Celtic, having played a game more.

Rangersmanager PhilippeClement

Their title hopes are all but mathematically over, but there’s still plenty to play for, given the Gers’ involvement in the Scottish Cup and the Europa League, welcoming Belgian outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to Ibrox for a crucial European tie on Thursday.

Due to numerous injuries, Clement has been forced to name makeshift back-lines on multiple occasions this season, so could Rangers re-sign a former centre-back to bolster his options?

Rangers looking to re-sign a defender

According to Timo Rizzi of Swiss online newspaper Watson, Rangers have now ‘made an offer’ to FC Zürich, as they attempt to re-sign defender Nikola Katić, who ‘wants to leave’ Switzerland this month.

Zürich boss Ricardo Moniz claims his side are yet to receive any offers for Katić, but former Rangers defender Craig Moore urges his former club to re-sign the “big, solid defender” who he describes as a former “fans’ favourite” from his time in Glasgow.

Katić was one of the very first players signed by Steven Gerrard when he took over as Rangers manager in 2018, arriving from Slaven Belupo Koprivnica for a reported fee of £2m.

The highlight of his Rangers career, unquestionably, was heading home the winner at Parkhead in 2019, as the Light Blues won an away Old Firm derby for the first time in nine years.

Nikola Katic

How Nikola Katić's return could help Rangers

In total, Katić made just 59 appearances across four seasons in Govan, not featuring at all between 8 March 2020 and 11 August 2021, a period of 521 days, after suffering a “career-threatening anterior cruciate ligament”, thereby loaned out to Hajduk Split the same month as his return, before joining Zürich a year later, upon the expiration of his contract.

Since the centre-back was last bedecked in red, white and blue, a lot has changed, not least his nationality.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Katić earned one cap for Croatia, featuring during a friendly against Mexico at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in May 2017.

However, he was then never called up again so, in 2024, he switched his allegiance to Bosnia & Herzegovina, the country of his birth, debuting against England in a pre-Euros friendly at St James’ Park, starting all six of the Golden Lilies’ fixtures in June, September and October, before sitting out the November’s Nations League double-header.

Meantime, he’s made 86 appearances for Zürich across the last two and a half seasons, established as a regular in their defence, albeit he’s sat out their last two Swiss Super League matches, against Yverdon Sport and Luzern, potentially due to ongoing transfer speculation.

So, could the now-Bosnian defender be returning to Govan and would he be a good signing? The answer is yes.

As alluded to earlier, Rangers have not had a settled centre-back pairing all season, yet to properly replace Connor Goldson, who departed for Aris Limassol in the summer.

When fit, John Souttar would be first choice, with veteran Leon Balogun or summer signing Robin Pröpper his most frequent partner, so let’s examine how Katić compares to that duo.

As outlined in the table, since the start of the 2022/23 season, Katić comes out on top when it comes to passing and % of aerial duals won, and he compares favourably to both Balogun and Pröpper in most metrics, such as tackles, interceptions and ball recoveries.

Also, during this very long timeframe, the Bosnian has racked up almost twice as many minutes as the Nigerian suggesting, unlike his previous stint in Glasgow, he can be available for a prolonged period, a valuable ability considering Rangers’ constant defensive injury crisis.

Katić’s aerial prowess particularly stands out so, if Rangers are able to re-sign the centre-back this month, it appears to be a move worth making.

Arsenal eyeing move for "ridiculous" player who has £55m release clause

Arsenal are now eyeing a move for a “ridiculous” Premier League player, who has a £55m release clause which will become active in the summer, according to a report.

Arteta keen to strengthen spine of his team

During the January transfer window, there was plenty of discussion about whether the Gunners need to bring in a striker if they are to make a real push for the Premier League title.

Everton’s dramatic late equaliser against Liverpool last night will certainly give the north Londoners renewed hope about winning the league, but there will still be concerns that the lack of a top striker could cost them.

As such, it seems likely Mikel Arteta will revisit a move for a forward at the end of the season, with the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak among the main players linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium.

However, it is not the only area in which Arteta is looking to strengthen, with Martin Zubimendi in line to be brought in to bolster the manager’s midfield options, and there are now reports he could also be keen on bringing in a new centre-back.

£50m forward seriously considering exit after Arsenal express real interest

He’s highly versatile.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 12, 2025

Gabriel and William Saliba have formed a formidable partnership over the past few seasons, but Arsenal are now eyeing a move for a younger option, with AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen said to be of interest.

That is according to a report from The Boot Room, which states Huijsen has a £55m release clause, which is set to become active at the end of the season. News of the clause’s existence has attracted the attention of a number of top Premier League clubs, with Liverpool and Chelsea also being named as potential suitors.

Bournemouth remain confident the 19-year-old will remain at the Vitality Stadium, but it remains to be seen whether his head is turned amid the widespread interest.

"Ridiculous" Huijsen has made great start to life in England

The teenager could hardly have asked for a better debut season, having established himself as a key player for a Bournemouth side who are making an unexpected push for Europe.

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has lauded the former Roma man for his “ridiculous” technical quality going forward in the past, and he has also proven himself to be astute defensively.

The Amsterdam-born defender ranks in the 96th percentile for interceptions per 90, and the 89th percentile for blocks and clearances, when compared to his positional peers over the past year.

However, given that Arteta has Saliba and Gabriel at his disposal, there is no pressing need to bring in a new centre-back, and Huijsen would be unlikely to settle for a bit-part role, given that he is receiving regular game time for Bournemouth.

As such, bringing in a new central midfielder and striker should remain Arsenal’s priority for the summer transfer window.

Finch to play BBL before making call on international future

Australia do not have any T20s on their schedule until next August

Glenn Maxwell: Every time we were one wicket too many down to go hard

Aaron Finch won’t rush into a decision over his international future following Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup, instead giving himself a chance to see how this season’s BBL goes.Having retired from ODIs in September, there are no international commitments for Finch until next August when Australia have T20s in South Africa. The next T20 World Cup is in West Indies and the USA in mid-2024 when Finch will be 37.”No, I’m not going to retire. Not just yet,” Finch told as he arrived back at Melbourne airport on Sunday. “I’ll play Big Bash and see where we sit after that, but I’m still enjoying playing cricket, playing T20.”It still feels unlikely that Finch will pad up again for Australia and if that’s the case he will finish with 3120 T20I runs at 34.28 and a strike-rate of 142.53 including a top score 172. He continued to struggle for form at the World Cup with a painful innings against Sri Lanka, but rebounded somewhat with 63 off 44 balls against Ireland in what may have been his last international innings after a hamstring injury keeping him out of the Afghanistan game.Related

Aaron Finch won’t be making that call just yet•ICC via Getty Images”His body has failed him here in terms of a hamstring strain that put him out of the World Cup…the next game is not until August next year so that gives him a lot of time to repair if he is willing to go on.”If not, then I am sure that over the next couple of weeks he will have a think about that and call it a little bit similarly to what he did in the one-day international scene.”McDonald, who took over as head coach from Justin Langer earlier this year, offered no excuses for Australia’s Super 12s exit of their home tournament.”We have only got ourselves to really blame,” he said, while forecasting personnel changes ahead of the next T20 World Cup. “We will go through what that looks like in terms of building towards the next World Cup”There will be some natural turnover because of the gap and space and also the age profile of the team. So there will be some people that get some opportunities, albeit next August when we play T20 again.”Australia’s next international action is a three-match ODI series against England which starts four days after the World Cup final. McDonald hinted that the early end to their tournament could mean a stronger-than-expected squad will be named. Pat Cummins was announced as the new ODI captain last month although he is not expected to feature in every series.
