Moyes could boldly drop Doucoure & unleash Everton's "standout" talent

It’s going to be a significant one for David Moyes this afternoon, with Everton hosting West Ham United at Goodison Park.

West Ham, with whom Moyes lifted the Conference League in 2022/23, haven’t been great this season, sitting level on points (33) in the Premier League with the resurgent Toffees.

Both sides’ problems were illuminated in the reverse fixture: a drab goalless draw played out four months ago in east London.

However, this is a different Everton. Moyes might have his share of injury problems to deal with, but there’s little question his team have the capacity to score a huge victory against the Hammers.

Everton's injury news

Everton might be suffering from a raft of absentees but they have also gone seven matches unbeaten in the Premier League under Moyes.

The 61-year-old manager did issue a pre-match update on several players, with Iliman Ndiaye, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dwight McNeil all approaching full fitness. None will be ready in time for this weekend, however.

Michail Antonio won’t return this season after his accident, while summer signings Niklas Fullkrug, Crysencio Summerville also remain sidelined.

West Ham United's NiclasFullkrug

Charly Alcaraz may be gunning for a start over Abdoulaye Doucoure, but Moyes actually has an alternative option to replace the veteran, and he should put some thought into picking him.

Why Moyes should drop Abdoulaye Doucoure

Fresh from being awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award for February, Moyes will need to make a big call, with Doucoure perhaps not the best option in between the base of midfield and the frontline.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure

The 32-year-old is still a hard-working and combative player, but Tim Iroegbunam’s cameo at Molineux last weekend highlighted the increased output last summer’s recruit brings through central phases.

Signing from Aston Villa for about £10m, Iroegbunam has only started four league matches this season, returning from a long layoff after Moyes’ arrival and since featuring from the bench.

Iroegbunam actually ranks among the top 17% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 9% for successful take-ons and the top 1% for tackles per 90, as per FBref, with that lattermost metric coming into play at Wolves.

Doucoure led the press well before being replaced for fresh legs. Iroegbunam, however, staked his claim. Despite playing less than half the Malian’s minutes, he almost saw more of the ball, was crisper in possession and unrelenting in defensive moments.

The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland had described Iroegbunam as the “standout” of Everton’s season in the early knockings before he was cruelly sidelined with an ankle injury for more than three months.

Tim Iroegbunam for Everton

While Alcaraz was also lively off the bench, he may have to wait here, unless Moyes wants to rotate his trusted base layer in Idrissa Gueye and James Garner.

Iroegbunam’s creativity, athleticism and tough-tackling approach could be perfect against a West Ham team with a midfield there for the taking.

Chelsea's decision to drop James to the bench for their Europa Conference League final against Real Betis raised a lot of eyebrows, especially after the West London side conceded an early goal from Abde Ezzalzouli.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As Chelsea continued to struggle to dominate Manuel Pellegrini's Real Betis through the first half, Maresca decided to bring James on at half-time in place of Malo Gusto. The Blues' substitutions, along with Los Verdiblancos' drop off in the second half, helped Maresca's side go on to grab a massive four-goal comeback to clinch the Europa Conference League title with a 4-1 win at Stadion Miejski. The Italian coach has now explained why he decided to leave James on the bench for the start of the clash.

    WHAT MARESCA SAID

Speaking to the media, Maresca said: "I promise you, I would always start with Reece. But I’m trying to protect him. He’s a top player for us. It’s like Cole, the problem is we need to manage him. When we changed him, he said to me, 'Boss, don’t worry, we’re going to win the game'."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR JAMES?

Maresca's decision to keep the injury-prone Chelsea captain on the bench could be influenced by the fact that the Blues' season is not yet over, as they will travel to the United States next month for the Club World Cup. James is expected to be a certain starter for Maresca through the competition.

Arafat Bhuiyan, a British-Bangladeshi seam bowler, has become the seventh graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA) to sign professional terms, after joining Kent for the remainder of the 2023 season.Bhuiyan was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, but has UK residency, and has taken 17 wickets for Kent’s second XI, including best figures of 4 for 81 against Hampshire earlier this month. He made his first-class debut in Kent’s ongoing fixture against Surrey at the Kia Oval.He currently plays his club cricket in the Kent Premier League for Blackheath, and has also featured for Surrey, Essex and Derbyshire’s Second XIs in the past six years, as well as stints for MCC’s Young Cricketers side in 2019, and SACA this year.”I’m over the moon to have signed for Kent,” Bhuiyan said. “It’s a dream come true to become a professional cricketer and I feel all my hard work has paid off.”I’m grateful to Kent, especially Second XI Coach Mark Dekker, for the faith they have showed in me, and hope I can perform well if given the opportunity.”Bhuiyan moved to Birmingham to be part of SACA’s winter training programme, and credited that experience for fast-tracking his professional ambitions.”I would also like to thank Dr Tom Brown from SACA for giving me the opportunity to train and for accommodating me during the Winter in Birmingham,” he said. “I can’t speak highly enough about the amount of work he is putting into this programme.”Kent’s Director of Cricket, Paul Downton, added: “Arafat comes highly recommended from our pathway coaches and has impressed with his pace and control with the ball for us this year. He brings much-needed depth to our bowling attack as we head into a busy period of the season.”

Worth even more than Piroe: Leeds must regret selling "sensational" star

With just 11 games to go in the Championship campaign this season, Leeds United currently sit three points clear of Sheffield United in their hunt to secure promotion – but doing so whilst winning the title.

The Whites’ form has been superb for large parts of the campaign, losing just three games to date, whilst also remaining unbeaten since the beginning of December.

Daniel Farke deserves a huge amount of credit for keeping the side competitive after numerous key departures over the summer after the play-off final defeat at Wembley.

The German will be looking to make it three second-tier title wins in England in the coming months, adding to the two he claimed during his time in charge of Norwich City.

However, if he is to achieve such a feat, he will likely rely on one player who’s so often produced the goods in the final third over the last couple of months.

Joel Piroe’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

The striker role at Elland Road has been one that has brought about conversation over recent years, with numerous players struggling to fill the void in Yorkshire.

However, over the last few months, Dutchman Joel Piroe has nailed down the starting role in Farke’s side, repaying the boss for the faith shown in him to lead the line.

The 25-year-old has already netted 16 times in his 35 appearances, already scoring outscoring his tally from his debut campaign at the club following his £10m move in 2023.

However, Piroe hasn’t had his success without his doubters, often coming under fire for his displays, but it’s safe to say the supporters are reaping the rewards with his recent form in the final third.

Despite his impressive run for the Whites in recent times, he’s still valued lower than one player who the club may regret offloading after his form away from the club.

The former Leeds star who’s worth more than Piroe

Before their recent success over the last couple of years, Leeds found themselves in a tricky financial situation, which saw them offloading numerous first-team players to balance the books.

Lewis Cook was just one example who departed his boyhood side for just £6m, now starring for Bournemouth in the Premier League and potentially featuring in Europe amid the Cherries’ recent form.

Former Leeds midfielder Lewis Cook

However, another player who previously plied their trade in Yorkshire but is now playing in the top flight is winger Jack Clarke, who made his breakthrough for the Whites back in the 2018/19 season.

The now 24-year-old departed in an £8.5m deal to join Tottenham Hotspur after his breakthrough campaign but failed to make a single Premier League appearance during his time in North London.

He’s since recaptured his form at Sunderland, registering 28 goals and 21 assists for the Black Cats, leading to Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley dubbing him “sensational” for his time at the Stadium of Light.

He’s since moved to Ipswich Town, once again joining a Premier League outfit, but has struggled to carry his excellent form to Portman Road, registering three goals and five assists to date – but has still seen an increase in his market value.

Clarke is now valued at £12.4m by Transfermarkt, a figure that is higher than that of Piroe, who’s only valued at £11.5m despite his excellent goalscoring record this campaign.

Given the increase and recent form in England’s second tier, Leeds must regret parting ways with Clarke, potentially having another dimension in attack had they kept hold of the youngster.

Undoubtedly, he left at a time when financial problems were present in Yorkshire, but his ability in the final third could’ve provided the added cutting edge in their quest for promotion in the coming months.

Celtic in good position to sign playmaker who'd "love" to play for Hoops

Celtic are in a strong position to sign a new playmaker who is keen to make the move to Parkhead, according to a new report.

Rodgers looking to bounce back from Rangers defeat

Celtic remain firmly in charge in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, though their final game before the international break ended in tears with a defeat to bitter rivals Rangers.

The Gers soared into a 2-0 lead before Brendan Rodgers’ side bounced back to level the scores in the second half through goals from Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate.

Just when it looked like they were about to complete an astonishing turnaround, Rangers’ Hamza Igamane hit a stunning winner in the 88th minute, thrashing the ball into the top corner from just outside the Celtic area.

Speaking after the defeat, Rodgers urged his side to bounce back and apologised to the club’s fans.

“Firstly, the message to the supporters is, we apologise because we always want to win games here and against our big rivals, so, for them, it’s not a great feeling,” he said. “In every facet of the game, we have to be much better, and if you’re going to be a champion this year, you’ve got to go and show that you’re a champion and you’ve got to earn it.”

He added: “So there are eight games to go, with 13 points, but we’ve got a lot of big games to play.”

Celtic in race to sign O'Sullivan

Even though Celtic will likely end the season as Scottish champions, Rodgers is still keen to bolster his side in the summer’s transfer market – even if it only means being able to avoid another defeat to their rivals next term.

And according to The Athletic, as relayed by the Nottingham Post, the Hoops are firmly in the running to sign Irish teenager Cathal O’Sullivan, who is also attracting interest from Nottingham Forest.

Cork City’s O’Sullivan only turned 18 in early March, but already has a wealth of experience under his belt, having made 30 appearances for Cork at senior level, and is also a regular for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-19s.

While The Athletic reports that it is Forest who are first in line to land the teenage attacker, O’Sullivan himself has suggested he one day would love to play at Parkhead.

In a recent interview with the Irish Examiner, O’Sullivan said: “Yeah, it’s definitely an ambition because obviously the link with Ireland and Celtic. It’s a huge club, massive club so yeah, I would love to go over and play for a club like Celtic.

“I love watching their games and how impressive their Champions League run was this year, and my dad is the same,” he added. “My dad supports Celtic if they’re on the TV. There’s a connection between Ireland and Celtic or Cork and Celtic, there’s a huge amount of fans over here.”

Man United chiefs think £42m West Ham player is perfect for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United officials have set their sights on signing a player from West Ham United this summer, with Red Devils officials under the impression that he’d suit Ruben Amorim down to the ground.

Players tipped to leave West Ham this summer

Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio are all out of contract at the London Stadium this summer, meaning Graham Potter, co-chair David Sullivan and Hammers transfer chiefs could be forced to orchestrate a serious summer rebuild.

Lukasz Fabianski will leave on a free at the end of this season if West Ham don’t activate the one-year extension clause in his contract as well, which would put an end to the Pole’s seven-year stay at the club.

Lucas Paqueta’s future remains uncertain, amid rumours that clubs in Brazil are interested in poaching the midfielder as he battles spot-fixing allegations off the field.

Mohammed Kudus has been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool ahead of the next transfer window, and there are suggestions that the Ghanaian’s contract includes an £85 million release clause which will become active this summer.

Kudus has apparently shown frustration behind-the-scenes at West Ham, and was unsettled during Julen Lopetegui’s brief tenure in charge. However, it is very debatable whether clubs will be prepared to pay £85 million for his services later this year.

Meanwhile, amid his excellent loan spell at Real Sociedad, defender Nayef Aguerd is believed to be attracting attention from elite clubs.

West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd attracting Man United interest

Real Madrid have already expressed interest in Aguerd, with the Morocco international standing out as Sociedad’s best performer by average match rating over 19 La Liga starts this campaign, according to WhoScored.

The 28-year-old is making a real success of his stint in La Liga, and Sociedad are believed to be attempting a permanent deal for the centre-back before next season.

Nayef Aguerd for Real Sociedad.

However, as per a Spanish media source, Imanol Alguacil’s side will face stiff competition from Old Trafford.

Indeed, Man United are plotting a move to sign Aguerd from West Ham this summer, and the club are said to be convinced that the African would slot into Amorim’s system perfectly.

However, as per other reports, Aguerd won’t come cheap to suitors following his brilliant 2024/2025 campaign. West Ham will apparently demand around £42 million to sell Aguerd, which would give Potter’s side a £12 million net profit on the player after they paid £30 million to bring him in from Rennes on a five-year contract in 2022.
