James Rew’s golden summer continued with the second List A century of his burgeoning career as Somerset recorded their first Metro Bank One-Day Cup success of the season with a 36-run win over Worcestershire Rapids at Taunton. The home side posted 287 for 9 after winning the toss, 19-year-old Rew hitting 101 off 93 balls, with eight fours and two sixes, to back up a brilliant season in the LV= Insurance County Championship. Lewis Goldsworthy contributed 47, while Ben Gibbon overcame a nightmare start to claim 3 for 58.Worcestershire looked favourites when reaching 232 for 5 in reply, but collapsed to 251 all out, Ben Cox top-scoring with 58 and both Rob Jones and Joe Leach contributing 41. Curtis Campher finished with 3 for 51.The game got off to an eventful opening when Somerset raced to 22 off the first over, sent down by left-arm seamer Gibbon. George Thomas flayed three boundaries, with six wides and four leg-byes also contributing to the total. There were already 31 runs on the board when Thomas fell to the final delivery of the second over, caught behind pushing forward to Leach.Andy Umeed and Goldsworthy took the score to 96 in the 18th over before Umeed edged a leg-side delivery from Cameron Jones through to Cox and departed for 34.Goldsworthy had swept a six off Josh Baker, but he and Rew were largely content to milk ones and twos, laying the foundation for a large total. The pair had advanced the score to 147 when Goldsworthy attempted to cut a ball from Brett D’Oliveira that was too close to him and got an edge through to Cox.By then, Rew was well set, scoring prolifically through the leg side and making good use of the reverse sweep. He moved to fifty off 52 balls and was joined by skipper Sean Dickson in another fruitful partnership.Dickson launched two big sixes, the first off one of two no-ball free hits conceded by Worcestershire for violating fielding restrictions, on his way to a valuable 37 off 40 balls.Rew was steadily accumulating while occasionally cutting loose. George Bartlett and Campher fell cheaply before the young wicketkeeper reached another landmark in an already memorable season, striking his eighth four to move to a 91-ball hundred. After adding a single, Rew was caught at deep backward square off Gibbon to leave Somerset 274 for seven with 13 balls of their innings remaining. They lost two more wickets and Worcestershire could feel relieved to keep the score below 300.The visitors then lost three of their top order inside 12 overs, Azhar Ali getting an inside edge onto his stumps off Ned Leonard, who then had D’Oliveira well caught by Shoaib Bashir at deep backward square. When Jake Libby was brilliantly caught by Rew, one-handed diving to his right, off Lamb, Worcestershire were 75 for 3. But Jones was going well and shouldered major responsibility for his side’s fortunes.Somerset knew they needed more wickets. They were gifted one when Kashif Ali called for a quick single to mid-wicket and Jones failed to beat Goldsworthy’s left-arm direct hit at the wicketkeeper’s end.Kashif was caught and bowled by Jack Brooks, who had dropped him the previous over. But Cox and Leach then put together a sensibly paced stand of 73 in 13 overs.Cox moved to a 56-ball fifty and Worcestershire were within 55 of victory when he top-edged a short ball from Campher to Goldsworthy at mid-wicket. It signalled a collapse with Josh Baker caught at cover in the same over.Leach had begun to free his arms, hitting a six and 4 fours. But when he was trapped lbw by Goldsworthy’s left-arm spin, the Rapids had lost three wickets on the same score and were 232 for eight. They never recovered.

Anrich Nortje, Sisanda Magala ruled out of World Cup

Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams have been included as replacements in South Africa’s 15-man squad

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Sep-2023Fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala have been ruled out of the 2023 ODI World Cup with injuries. They have been replaced by Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the tournament that begins in India on October 5.Nortje has a suspected stress fracture of the back after experiencing spasms during the second ODI against Australia earlier this month. Magala, who played only the third ODI against Australia and went for 1 for 46 in four overs, has a left-knee injury.”It’s hugely disappointing for Anrich and Sisanda to be missing out on the 50-over World Cup,” South Africa’s coach Rob Walter said. “We sympathize in their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action.”This provides an opportunity for Andile and Lizaad on the global stage. Both players have been part of our winter programs as well as having represented South Africa in the recent white-ball tour against Australia. They offer great skill sets and we’re excited to have them complete the 15-player squad for this year’s World Cup.”Phehlukwayo played in the second and fifth ODIs against Australia. While he did not make much of an impression in the first game, he scored 38 off 19 balls to finish the innings strongly in the series finale and then took 1 for 44. Williams played three of the five matches, taking 3 for 44, 1 for 17 and 0 for 24.Nortje’s absence is a major blow for South Africa as he is their quickest bowler with substantial experience in India, where he plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He played in the Major League Cricket tournament in the USA over the South African winter and was rested for the T20Is against Australia. He was then ruled out of the first ODI but played the second, bowling only five overs before leaving the field. He missed the third game after he was sent for scans and was then ruled out of the series.Magala had not played any cricket since splitting the webbing in his hand at the IPL in early April and was subsequently ruled out of the T20Is against Australia with infrapatellar tendinopathy – pain in the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin bone. He experienced discomfort in the knee again after playing one ODI against Australia.South Africa leave for India on September 23, and play their warm-up games against Afghanistan on September 29 and New Zealand on October 2. Their first game of the tournament is against Sri Lanka on October 7.South Africa’s ODI World Cup squadTemba Bavuma (capt), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Lizaad Williams

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, David appreciates Juventus' interest and wants to join the Italian giants, but the player's agent is demanding a hefty commission for the deal to go through. Juventus are still negotiating, and the signs are positive as David is in favour of moving to Turin even though he has received lucrative offers from Saudi Arabian clubs.

The 25-year-old Canadian forward left Lille as a free agent this summer. The forward wants to join Juve, but his camp are demanding a big fee of around €15 million (£13m/$17m). Juve general manager Damien Comolli is deterred by the high fees, and David has personally spoken to his camp to reduce the demands and negotiate a deal. The Italian club have also shortlisted other forwards in case there's a fallout in David's deal.

Comolli has many plans for the club. From showing interest in Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson to heavily pushing to bring Jadon Sancho to Turin, the club want to secure a few big names as they head into the upcoming Champions League. • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to a report from , Barcelona may consider activating Araujo’s temporary €60 million (£51m/$65m) release clause amid ongoing financial fair play pressures. The clause is active from July 1 to July 15 and allows other clubs to sign the centre-back for that fixed amount. Araujo came back from his summer break early and is going to start training this week with Flick before the official beginning of pre-season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona extended Araujo's contract until 2031 in January, including this short-term release clause. Although sporting director Deco and Flick view the Uruguayan defender as a key part of the project, financial difficulties and fair play regulations may force the club to consider offers. Arsenal and Juventus had both expressed interest in the winter transfer window, while Manchester United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich were recently said to be eyeing him. There are reports that some board members support a sale if it contributes to the club's financial stability.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite being sidelined by injury earlier in the season, Araujo made 25 appearances for the club in the 2024-25 season. He won La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup with the squad.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

Barcelona must navigate the July 1-15 period carefully, balancing squad needs with financial constraints. Flick expects Araujo to play a prominent role if no club triggers the €60m clause. However, offers from Premier League or Serie A sides during the release window could lead to a forced sale if financial pressures intensify.

Babar 'proud' of his fast bowlers who help Pakistan 'dominate'

“We haven’t worked out exactly how to best approach the middle overs, but we’re finishing and starting very well,” captain says

For much of this World Cup cycle, it is Pakistan’s top three with the bat who have generated the most encouraging headlines. But ahead of their second meeting against India in just over a week, the focus is now firmly on the three with the ball. The pace-bowling trio of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf have, with inspiring performances of late, cast Pakistan as slight favourites, especially in light of their showing against the same opposition last Saturday. And their captain Babar Azam was not shy in his praise for them.”I feel very proud of the fast bowlers I have. They’re among the best, and help us dominate,” he said on the eve of playing India in Colombo on Sunday. “Tournaments and matches are won by fast bowlers, and I fully believe in them. There’s no secret; they just believe in themselves and cover for each other.”Related

And the trio has done that in abundance of late. Even as Afridi and Naseem took charge while opening the bowling against India in Pallekele last week, Rauf proved a touch expensive. But once the seam movement and swing began to fade, it was Rauf’s extra pace that provided Pakistan breakthroughs.Against Bangladesh on Wednesday, Shaheen and Naseem struck early, but when Naseem went down with an injury after a boundary dive went wrong, Rauf was there to chip in, taking two wickets off his first seven balls, and four overall. And while Afridi has been less successful at the death, Rauf and Naseem have made up for it, combining for six lower-order wickets in the last two matches.”We’re testing out different combinations to see what works for us,” Babar said. “We haven’t quite worked out exactly how to best approach the middle overs, but we’re finishing and starting very well thanks to our fast bowlers. It’s a team effort. As a team, we try and get the best out of our players.”It is the one area where Pakistan have tinkered with personnel to try and hit upon the right formula. Against India, they went for the extra spinner in Mohammad Nawaz, but lost momentum through the middle overs as Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan pressed home the advantage against an off-colour Pakistan spin attack, with 21 overs of spin going for 133 wicketless runs.Haris Rauf’s extra pace comes into play once seam and swing are gone•Associated Press

But in Faheem Ashraf, Pakistan found more control against Bangladesh, with the allrounder conceding just 27 in seven overs, as well as breaking the hundred-run fifth-wicket partnership, something which has now been Pakistan’s bane for two successive games.Faheem’s effectiveness has prompted Pakistan to stick with him for the game against India – they will be fielding an unchanged XI from their victory over Bangladesh – thus opting for more control, and the extra seamer over the spinner. Babar justified that call as one of “trying to keep our options open rather than being stuck to a combination”.But with Pakistan having travelled from Pallekele to Lahore and then to Colombo in the preceding week even as India stayed put in Sri Lanka, Babar brushed aside any concerns about fatigue. Instead, despite the tournament’s Pakistan leg now over – though they were the official hosts – Babar was keen to point out the competitive advantage they still enjoyed.”We have spent two-and-a-half months in Sri Lanka, including the Test series, LPL, Afghanistan series, and now the Asia Cup,” he said. “So you could say we have a slight edge over India because of that.”

Tahir thanks Ashwin after leading Amazon Warriors to CPL title

Imran Tahir, the captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors team that clinched its first CPL title on Sunday, has thanked R Ashwin for predicting that his team would win the tournament.Tahir mentioned the India spinner at the post-match presentation after Amazon Warriors’ nine-wicket win over Trinbago Knight Riders. Among all the others he thanked, Tahir made note of those who had joked about his being appointed captain.”It’s been a great experience playing for this beautiful franchise and playing for these beautiful people who always come and support us,” Tahir said. “I’m just grateful to the almighty first of all. Coming into the competition, everyone was sending jokes that I had become a captain, so I think actually those things motivated me, so I actually want to thank those people who said that, and I also want to thank my family, all the players’ families, they’ve been on the road with us. It’s been a great journey, very special journey.Related

“Also want to thank our analyst Prasanna [Agoram] – he’s been working every day, 20 hours a day, and giving me all the plans. I’m really, really grateful to him, and also want to thank Ashwin from India. He said before the competition that we will do it.”Amazon Warriors topped the league table but endured a setback in the first Qualifier where they lost to Knight Riders. They bounced back thereafter, though, bowling Jamaica Tallawahs out for 101 in the second Qualifier and skittling Knight Riders for 94 in the final.”I think this year we were more hungry than ever before,” Tahir said – Amazon Warriors had failed to get their hands on the trophy despite making the title round five times in the past. “That’s the thing, I think if you want something really badly, it will happen for you, even though we lost our first Qualifier. Everyone [was talking] about the toss, and we did it in both situations [batting and bowling first], and we won games. The team belief was there.”Result is never guaranteed, but the way we came back in the competition, and I said one thing before we came here [for the final] – ‘we’ve been the best team in the competition, no one can stop us if we play the brand of cricket we’ve been playing’.”Kieron Pollard was disappointed with how the final went, but felt Knight Riders had “played spectacularly well throughout the entire tournament”•Getty Images

Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard was disappointed that his team was bowled out so cheaply, but said he was proud of his team for their performance over the course of the season.”Obviously we didn’t bat properly. Making 94 in the first innings of a final is never going to be enough,” he said. “Am I disappointed with the result? Yes, I’m disappointed with the result, but am I disappointed with the fellows. No, I thought they played spectacularly well throughout the entire tournament, and you know, we were beaten by the better team today, Guyana, so well played to Guyana. I think they played well, they played consistent cricket throughout the tournament and they’re deserved winners tonight.”Pollard was particularly impressed that his team reached the final after finishing at the bottom of the table last season.”Just the belief and the fight [we showed],” he said. “Obviously, finishing sixth in the last tournament, if we’d finished second-to-last, we’d have done better than last year, but having said that, the way how the guys started in the campaign, Trinidad, we were on it, guys were injured, guys fought all the way till the end, and you can’t ask for a better effort from the support staff, from the team-mates, from everybody. So congratulations to them, tough luck on the result, but sometimes in life some people deserve things more than you, and I thought Guyana deserved it tonight.”

Shanto looks for Bangladesh batting improvements: 'Nobody is satisfied scoring fifties'

The last half an hour of the India-Bangladesh World Cup contest in Pune played out like the ending of a cricket-themed Bollywood movie. The protagonist reached his century and won the match right in the nick of time. Virat Kohli chased his 48th ODI century almost to perfection. He ran two runs within 20 yards of the bat. He slammed fours and sixes as the crowd cheered on. He farmed the strike with KL Rahul. Even the umpire missed a near-certain wide when things got tight. In all of this, the Bangladesh players stood around like they had absolutely no control over what was happening in the middle. It would have been made no difference to Kohli’s concentration but Bangladesh didn’t even try to slow down the game. Not even the odd by-play, like the bowler stopping in his stride. Perhaps even a cheeky wide when Kohli was getting close to his milestone would have shown that they were still capable of affecting this match instead of what actually happened, where it looked like they were just waiting for the ordeal to end.Having lost three games on the trot, Bangladesh’s campaign is in need of a lift and their acting captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is looking at his batters to provide it.”We were well prepared. Our top order did well but the two set batters [Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan] should have played long knocks. If one of them scored 120 or 130, it would have made life easier for the latter batters. I think we couldn’t bat well in the middle overs. One of our openers should have batted a bit longer. It would have been a different ball game.”We made our best start, adding 93 runs for the opening stand. But we couldn’t bat well in the middle overs. It is our responsibility to bat well. I bat at No. 3, which is an important position. We had couple of soft dismissals. It was a good wicket but the batters didn’t take responsibility. We have made big scores before too. If Litton and Tanzid batted for longer, it would have helped Mushy [Mushfiqur Rarhim] or [Mahmudullah] Riyad later in the innings.”Shanto has scored two of Bangladesh’s four ODI hundreds this year, and since he and Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck centuries against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup, they have gone nine innings without a three-figure score.”Nobody is satisfied scoring 50, 70 or 100, not the players or the coaching staff, unless it helps the team,” Shanto said. “Every batter is talking about it. Tanzid and Litton aren’t satisfied with their knocks. Big players convert these starts into 100s or 150s. We are all concerned, and we are working on it.”Tanzid Hasan came good against India after a series of low scores•ICC via Getty Images

Bangladesh have put a lot of faith in Tanzid, backing him through a series of low scores since he made his debut last month. Shanto took pride in the way the team was able to bring the best out of one of their young players and hoped that he kicks on from here. “Tanzid played really well but we expect better knocks from him. I hope he improves on it in the next matches. Every player should be backed like [Tanzid] was. Not half-hearted, but 100%. Tanzid batted well, but we need more from him. If we support him, he can play more such knocks.”Given Bangladesh need big scores from their batters, it seems strange that they are not letting some of them occupy their preferred spots. Shanto has been shuttled down to No. 4 twice in this World Cup but he typically bats at No. 3. Towhid Hridoy has been pushed down to No. 7 though most of his success has come batting at No. 5. They had an opportunity against India to use Mushfiqur’s experience at No. 4, in the absence of Shakib, but chose not to.Shato defended the team’s tactics. “Everyone is well aware of their batting positions so they are quite comfortable with it. If they know the plan beforehand, then there’s no difference. Hridoy likes to bat at No. 5. Mushy is scoring runs at No. 6. Riyad is batting well at No. 7. Shakib would have batted at No. 4. I think it was the right batting order.”With five matches still in hand, Bangladesh remain in semi-final contention. They have also turned things around from tougher positions in the past but it was only after shedding a lot of baggage. In a World Cup campaign, every day adds to the overall pressure of doing well.Perhaps Shanto’s clear speaking and candid press conference at the end of the Pune defeat was a bright spot. To see him willing to accept responsibility was a breath of fresh air. “We will definitely want to win the next match, every match. We haven’t played at our best yet, especially in our batting. We must be more responsible. There’s a lot left to do in this tournament. It is important to play a good game. It can change our momentum. Nobody knows, we can win the next four or five matches.”
