James Anderson looks set to retire from international cricket at the end of England’s home summer. The reported on Friday that Brendon McCullum, England’s Test coach, travelled to the UK from New Zealand earlier this week and told Anderson in person over a round of golf that he intends to look to the future this summer, building towards the 2025-26 Ashes.Anderson became the third man to reach 700 Test wickets earlier this year in the final match of England’s tour to India but had a relatively light workload in India, bowling 110 overs across seven innings.

    WHAT HAPPENED

Real Salt Lake and USMNT star Diego Luna says he's excited for the upcoming September international window, where Mauricio Pochettino will have his first opportunity to integrate both Gold Cup participants and those who missed the summer camp.

Luna stressed the importance of internal competition in raising performance standards.

“That’s the type of mental kind of thing that is going to allows us to be a top-level country,” Lune told the Unfiltered Soccer podcast with Tim Howard and Landon Donovan. “You’ve got two people that are just fighting and fighting against each other. And overall, it’s a good thing, overall, the person that’s going to get put in that XI worked for it and earned it. So I think that’s the type of mentality we need in the US with soccer and that’s what we’re missing."

Walter: Nortje not 'very far away' from returning to his best

South Africa’s white-ball coach feels Nortje can get stronger despite poor returns after six-month absence

Firdose Moonda28-May-2024Anrich Nortje is not “very far away,” from being back to his best, according to South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter, who is not too disheartened with the fast bowler’s figures since returning from a six-month absence caused by a stress fracture.Nortje did not play a match between September 2023 and March 2024 – missing the ODI World Cup and the full South African home summer as a result – and opted out of a central contract for this year. Since returning to action, he has played 11 T20 games across the CSA T20, the IPL and – most recently – a series against West Indies, bowling 40 overs to pick up nine wickets for 449 runs. He has an overall economy rate of 11.22, and went at a rate of more than 12 runs an over in his two T20Is, but Walter remains confident in his ability ahead of the T20 World Cup.”They’ve been tough conditions for a fast bowler and [Nortje was] coming up against a side who were pretty brutal if you were off the mark. He probably experienced the exact same thing having come off a break into his first four games at the IPL. So he probably landed himself in a perfect storm, which in many ways can harden you and get you even more ready,” Walter told a press conference on Tuesday. “I still don’t believe he’s very far away. A world-class performer finds a way and I don’t doubt that he will as well.”Related

Nortje returns in Markram-led South Africa T20 World Cup squad

'Can't keep making the same mistakes,' says van der Dussen

Nortje was chosen in South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad ahead of Lungi Ngidi, who sat out the IPL with a lower back concern but returned during the CSA T20 Challenge, where he took eight wickets in eight matches at an average of 19.37 and conceded at 8.30 runs to the over.Despite Ngidi’s wide-range of slower-ball variations, when the T20 World Cup squad was announced, Walter explained he opted for Nortje for raw pace, and he stands by that choice. “The ideal is to use every person’s x-factor to the best of our ability. His x-factor is his pace so we are definitely always looking to use that 150-plus speed that he has,” Walter said.In the two matches Nortje played against West Indies, he reached above 150kph with some deliveries – and those were often dispatched as quickly as they arrived – but also took pace off, going down to 110kph. “He is more than that (pace), really, and he has developed a good set of skills from a slower ball point of view,” Walter said. ” So I do believe he can bowl on different surfaces and in different positions of the game. But his main job is to strike, really, and break the game open, and then finish it, and then close it up.”For slower balls, South Africa will also look to Ottneil Baartman, SA20’s second-highest wicket-taker this season, who made his debut against West Indies. Baartman took 3 for 26 in his first international and dismissed batters with the new and old ball but picked up a lower-limb injury that forced him out of the next two matches but has returned to training.Ottniel Baartman can mix up pace and offer variation to South Africa’s attack•SA 20″Ottneil bowled yesterday”, Walter said. “He performed excellently well, and continues to perform excellently well so I’m very excited by what Ottneil has brought to the side. He is a very simple and highly talented and skilled individual who sort of slides under the radar in terms of the job that he’s doing. He bowls in the toughest parts of the game and finds a way to get it done well.”Tabraiz Shamsi, who did not play in the West Indies series and also suffered a niggle, has also been in the nets and that is all the practice South Africa will get. Their official warm-up match, scheduled for Wednesday in Florida, has been cancelled for logistical reasons.”With the IPL unfolding the way it was, as well as this tour in the West Indies, it would have meant that we played the 24th, 25th, 26th, traveled on the 27th, and then played on the 29th, being unsure as to who was going to arrive when from the IPL. So it just wasn’t tenable for us to play a game,” Walter said. “We would have loved to have had one warm-up game; it’s not like we’ve been short of playing.”Three South Africans – Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen – were involved in the IPL final on Sunday while one other, Keshav Maharaj, was part of the Rajasthan Royals squad that played the Eliminator last Friday. South Africa will now hold intra-squad scenario training before traveling to New York for their first match against Sri Lanka on June 3.

Rodrygo makes final decision on Real Madrid future amid Tottenham and Arsenal interest

Rodrygo's situation at Madrid has been a complex mix of undeniable talent, moments of brilliance, fluctuating form, and an uncertain position in a star-studded Madrid squad. However, Rodrygo wishes to be a regular starter at the club and, for that, he is willing to fight for his place and work hard on himself, confirms . The Brazilian has received a lot of interest from the Premier League, but Madrid's high asking price is keeping the clubs at bay.

Rodrygo played 54 games in the 2024-25 campaign, in which he scored 14 goals and registered 10 assists. However, his minutes in the league dropped, and he went through a goal drought, scoring just once in 25 games. The winger was part of the Club World Cup squad but didn't impress much. However, the winger has now committed to regaining his form under Alonso. Los Blancos are open to parting ways with the winger but reportedly want around €90m (£78m/$104m) for the two-time Champions League winner. Tottenham have shown interest recently after the departure of Son Heung-min, but Madrid's asking price for the Brazilian is too high to match.

Arda Guler, Brahim Diaz and new signing Franco Mastantuono will further intensify the competition within the squad. The 24-year-old previously claimed that he doesn't wish to play in the right-wing position, a preference that Alonso may not be willing to accommodate. The ex-Santos player will have to be clinical and make the most of his chances if he wishes to get a starting spot in the team.

Madrid are in no rush to sell Rodrygo, as the player is tied to the Spanish side until 2028. The team will return to training on August 4, prior to which medical checks will be conducted. The Brazilian has two weeks to improve and show his qualities to Alonso if he wishes to start Madrid's opening league fixture against Osasuna on August 19.

Salt on aggressive approach in powerplay: 'It's about putting the odds in your favour'

Phil Salt brought up his fourth half-century at Eden Gardens in IPL 2024 to help Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roll over Delhi Capitals (DC) by seven wickets with 21 balls to spare in Monday night.Salt smashed 68 off just 33 balls, with 60 of those runs coming in the powerplay. During that phase, he clubbed seven fours and four sixes as KKR raced to 79, which was the fifth time this season that they posted 75 or more in the first six overs.”It is high-risk at times, but it is also about putting the odds in your favour and not taking the risks you don’t want to,” Salt told the host broadcaster after the game. “That’s the sort of balance that every opening batter tries to strike. Sometimes you can miss the boat a few innings in a row, but you just got to keep backing yourself and sort of taking those right options.”Related

  • Varun and Salt star in comprehensive KKR win

Salt picked his targets against DC: Lizaad Williams, off whom he plundered 15 off the 23 runs in KKR’s first over, and Khaleel Ahmed, who he took down for three fours and a six in the final over of the powerplay. Salt faced 28 of the 36 balls when the fielding restrictions were on, while his opening partner Sunil Narine played second fiddle. They brought up their fifth fifty-plus opening stand in IPL 2024 off just 26 balls, continuing their successful season as an opening pair with a 79-run partnership. Across nine innings, Salt and Narine have now added 485 runs, which is the most by any pair for the first wicket this IPL. Their scoring rate of 12.43 is also the second-highest for any pair to have opened the batting at least five times.”We’ve dovetailed nicely this competition, [and] that’s because if one of us gets going, then you feed the strike to that person,” Salt said. “When I get going, he feeds me the strike, and vice-versa. It’s good that we are on the same page like that.”Asked about the nature of his conversations with Narine, Salt said, “Off-field, we have a laugh generally. On-field, there’s not too much. We normally do all the talking the day before. Sunil keeps it very simple, but he’s a deep thinker of the game. With all his experience, he’s really good to lean on. We normally just have a good time. He brings a lot of experience to the partnership.”The Narine-Salt duo has made the job of KKR captain Shreyas Iyer a lot easier.”Phil, he comes for the team meetings and also gives his inputs,” Iyer said. “That guy is completely engrossed in the game. He wants to learn what’s happening, and every time [he is] coming up and giving such kind of performances and brilliant starts. It’s just pure bliss to see him coming and performing the way he has been.”

Livingstone 'enjoying playing cricket' again after struggling with knee problem

England allrounder hopes to have put injury behind him with World Cup looming

Liam Livingstone has revealed that he has been playing through pain for the last 18 months due to a knee injury. It “drained” his enjoyment of the game and left him “in a pretty crap place” but he played “pain-free” during England’s T20I series against Pakistan thanks to an anti-inflammatory injection. In 2022, Livingstone rushed back from an ankle injury to play for England at the T20 World Cup and was at the non-striker’s end when Ben Stokes hit the winning runs in the final. He injured his right knee while fielding on his Test debut in Pakistan shortly after, and has struggled for form and fitness ever since. He scored 60 runs in six innings at the 50-over World Cup in India and averaged 15.75 across 18 franchise T20 innings at the start of this year, with a top score of 38 not out. He returned home early from the IPL to get his knee “sorted” and hopes that medical intervention has sorted the problem once and for all.Related

Rashid the spark for England before Buttler, Salt dismantle chase

“It’s not been the most enjoyable 18 months of trying to play with a niggle,” he said after England’s seven-wicket win at The Oval on Thursday. “It kind of drains your spirit, drains your enjoyment of cricket. I was in a pretty crap place at the end of the IPL… thankfully, the injection seems to have worked and just being able to play cricket pain-free for the first time in two years is the exciting part for me. I feel like I’ve got a smile on my face again, and I’m enjoying playing cricket.”Livingstone explained that he had “something underneath my kneecap that keeps catching” on the bone, but that the injection went “really well” and has relieved the pain. He said: “This series, I came in a lot happier, enjoying my cricket a little bit more – and being able to move my feet when I bat also really helps. I feel like I’ve got a smile on my face, and that’s all that really matters to me.”As England’s designated finisher, Livingstone only faced three balls in their rain-interrupted series against Pakistan. While acknowledging the benefits of the squad spending the past two weeks together, he admitted: “It seemed like the series never got going, to be honest. I feel like we’ve just spent the whole time in a hotel room or on the bus.”Livingstone’s middle-order role is volatile and fleeting: he has been to two T20 World Cups but faced only 44 balls in England’s 2022 triumph in Australia, and just 29 when they reached the semi-finals in the UAE the previous year. He acknowledged that once England arrive in the Caribbean, he will have to work hard in training to “find my rhythm”.”The winter didn’t go as well as I would’ve liked, but it is what it is,” he said. “Everybody goes through a run in their career where they have a bit of a rut, so hopefully I’m on the other side of that. It may not be in the group stage – but hopefully when my opportunity comes, I can show that I’m in a bit better nick than what I was.”It’s a different role for me. I’ve always batted No. 3, 4, 5, and even at the top of the order when I first came through. You’ve got to manage your expectations and realise that actually, when the time comes, I’m going to get an opportunity – at some time, at some point – to win a game of cricket for England. Hopefully when that time comes, I’m ready to take it.”Given the limitations of his batting role, Livingstone’s biggest contribution in the Caribbean may come with the ball as one of England’s four spin options, along with Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Will Jacks. He underlined his value on Thursday night, combining legspin and offbreaks to take 2 for 17 from three overs – including a rare double-wicket maiden in the 15th.”I love coming back to play for England because Jos [Buttler] and Motty [Matthew Mott] really trust my bowling, which not many people do in different competitions,” he said. “It’s a difficult role batting at No. 7: I faced three balls in this series and may not face a ball until we get out there and we’re 60 for 5, so I’ve got to try and contribute in a different way.”[It’s about] being able to do that with the ball or whatever it is in the field. I’ve got to keep developing as a cricketer and certainly, being able to bowl is part of that. I guess that’s the cool thing about being able to contribute in all three facets of the game: whenever you’re called upon, you’ve got an opportunity.”England left for Barbados on Friday morning ahead of their opening group-stage match against Scotland next Tuesday. “We feel like we’ve got all bases covered,” Livingstone said. “The group’s in a very good place. I think we’re in a much better place than what we were six months ago, which is pretty exciting for all of us… the boys are really looking forward to getting going.”
