Youngsters Vats and Sindhu lead Haryana into quarterfinals

They will play their quarterfinal against Gujarat on January 12

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jan-2025Parth Vats, the 20-year-old legspin allrounder whom Haryana picked over Yuzvendra Chahal in their squad, starred with bat and ball in a 72-run win against Bengal that took them into the quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In his maiden List A season, Vats helped Haryana rebuild their innings from 98 for 3 in the 17th over. He scored 62 off 77 balls and put on 84 for the fourth wicket with Nishant Sindhu, another 20-year-old allrounder who scored 64 and also contributed with the ball.Vital contributions from the lower order – an unbeaten 32-ball 41 from Sumit Kumar and 29 from Rahul Tewatia – powered Haryana to 298 for 9.Mohammed Shami, who is in line for an India comeback if he can maintain fitness, was wayward in his first spell for Bengal, conceding 27 in three overs without a wicket. He came back strong to finish with 3 for 61 in ten overs, with two wickets at the death as Haryana were aiming to accelerate.Another player of interest from a national team perspective, Abhimanyu Easwaran, was key to Bengal’s chase. With openers Sudip Gharami and Abishek Porel putting on 70 in 12.5 overs for the first wicket, Abhimanyu had the opportunity to steer Bengal’s innings, but the rustiness of having spent two months on India’s Test bench in Australia showed.Having survived a close stumping appeal, Abhimanyu attempted to break free with a succession of reverse sweeps. Eventually, the pressure of not being able to score fluently got to him, and he was out attempting a slog sweep against mystery spinner Amit Rana.Porel kept Bengal alive with a half-century but played conservatively for large parts of his 57 off 78 balls. His dismissal exposed Bengal’s brittle middle order in the 28th over and Vats dismissed Anustup Majumdar, Karan Lal and Shami to help Haryana wrap up the chase for 226 in 43.1 overs.Haryana play their quarterfinal against Gujarat in Vadodara on January 12.

Vijay Hazare Trophy: Padikkal, Shetty step up as Karnataka storm into final

Karnataka, searching for a fifth title, now await the winner of the semi-final between Vidarbha and Maharashtra

Devdutt Padikkal put on a batting exhibition on an up-and-down surface at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara as he helped Karnataka to their fifth Vijay Hazare Trophy final. He continued his stellar run in the competition, hitting his seventh successive fifty-plus score in India’s premier 50-over domestic competition and in the process, knocked defending champions Haryana out.Padikkal made 86 off 113 balls – following his 102 off 99 against Baroda in the last outing, his first this season – and added 128 for the third wicket with Ravichandran Smaran as Karnataka chased down the 238-run target with relative ease. The win was set up by their bowlers led by left-arm quick Abhilash Shetty, who returned 4 for 34. His wickets included both Nishant Sindhu and Parth Vats, the two half-centurions from Haryana’s preliminary quarter-final win that knocked out Bengal.Legspinner Shreyas Gopal was instrumental in turning the tide Karnataka’s way with the ball when he broke a fluent second-wicket partnership worth 70 between Himanshu Rana and Ankit Kumar by trapping the latter lbw on 48. Thereon, Haryana lost 8 for 96 to collapse to 198 for 9. But a stroke-filled last-wicket stand between Anuj Thakral and Amit Rana, which included scoring 17 off the last over of the first innings, helped Haryana get to a total much more than Karnataka would have liked.Four-time champions Karnataka were jolted early in the chase when their top-scorer of the competition, the captain Mayank Agarawal, fell in the opening over. Anshul Kamboj got a fullish ball to jag in and hit Agarawal on the knee-roll, the Hawk-Eye showing it to clip the stumps. Padikkal, his opening partner since returning from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, managed to ride the uneven bounce and collect a few fours, even as KV Aneesh struggled at the other end. The No. 3 bat played 14 straight dots before heaving Sumit Kumar over deep midwicket for a meaty six to get going.Related

'I'm amazed myself' – Karun Nair reflects on record-breaking run

If Padikkal brought Karnataka’s chase on track with his 62-run partnership with Aneesh, he dashed Haryana’s hopes with his alliance with Smaran. The pair took their time to settle, especially when Haryana pressed their spinners, Amit and Sindhu, into service. They were getting some balls to turn, some jumped from the rough but Padikkal broke the deadlock by stepping out to Sindhu and smoking him over long-on. He looked untroubled for most of his stay until he played a cross-batted heave, intending to finish the chase in a hurry, and top-edged Sindhu to mid-off with Karnataka 44 away.Smaran too scored a classy fifty, hitting three fours and three sixes and fell on 76 off 94 with Karnataka 13 away.Earlier in the day, Haryana were inserted and got a steady start through openers Arsh Ranga and Himanshu. Their partnership should have been nipped in the fifth over when Ranga edged Koushik behind, but Krishnan Shrijith failed to hang on. That did not cost Karnataka as Shetty struck with his second ball to have Ranga edge one to Padikkal at slip. That was Karnataka’s only success for some time as Himanshu and Amit scored fluently. They were helped by some wayward bowling, too, with Prasidh bowling a few wides down leg. Shrijith’s shoddy glovework also resulted in a few byes. The second-wicket pair for Haryana was doing well to set a base. Which is when Agarawal brought spin on to apply the brakes.Shreyas and left-arm spinner Hardik Raj tested both the edges of the batters, with the former using the googly to excellent effect. After he denied Haryana’s captain, Ankit, a fifty, Himanshu had an ill-timed dash down the surface against Raj and was stumped by Shrijith. Those twin wickets gave Karnataka enough of an opening. Dinesh Bana, Rahul Tewatia and Sumit Kumar all got starts but none lasted more than 36 balls. But that did not bother Karnataka, who made regular inroads to trigger a collapse. One that was enough to propel Karnataka to their first Vijay Hazare Trophy final since 2019-20 after three semi-finals and a quarter-final appearance in the last four editions. They will meet the winner of Vidarbha vs Maharashtra in Saturday’s final.

Newcastle in the race to hijack Bayern Munich transfer for £22.5m attacker

Newcastle United are in the race to hijack Bayern Munich’s transfer for a £22.5m attacker in the final days of the transfer window.

Newcastle working to sign forwards with Isak still on strike

Following a Premier League defeat to Liverpool, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak remains on strike as he looks to push through a move to Anfield.

Despite the intervention of chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Isak still wants to sign for the Reds, with Newcastle holding out for £150m after rejecting an opening offer worth £110m.

A PIF delegation, along with co-owner Jamie Reuben, met Isak at his home on Monday before the 3-2 loss to Liverpool, however, there wasn’t much progress in regards to getting the forward back involved with the first-team squad.

PIF and those behind the scenes at St James’ Park now need to bring in attackers of their own before agreeing to sell Isak in a record deal, with Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen a top target for the Magpies.

Newcastle have now had two offers turned down for the Norwegian, and elsewhere Brentford’s Yoane Wissa has also been heavily linked with a transfer.

Strand Larsen and Wissa aren’t the only two Premier League targets for Newcastle, though, in what promises to be a chaotic end to the transfer window on Tyneside.

Newcastle in race for Bayern target Nicolas Jackson

Newcastle are in the race to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea despite a loan bid having been received for the striker from Bayern Munich, according to the PA news agency.

The 24-year-old, who cost the Blues £22.5m from Villarreal, has been told he can leave Stamford Bridge before Monday. The Blues favour a permanent transfer ahead of next week’s deadline, but the only bid so far has come from the Bundesliga champions for a season-long arrangement.

Nicolas Jackson Newcastle Graphic

Newcastle want a resolution to Isak’s future before moving for Jackson, who does not have a future at Chelsea following the arrivals of strikers Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich.

Chelsea need to offload Jackson and Christopher Nkunku in order to move forward with moves for RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons – who favours a move to west London – and Manchester United’s unwanted winger Alejandro Garnacho.

New Guimaraes: PIF exploring late bid to sign £42m "monster" for Newcastle

Newcastle are prioritising a new striker, but are still considering a move for a centre-midfielder.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 27, 2025

Jackson has been the Blues’ main striker for the last two seasons but endured an almost five-month goal drought in the league between December and May last season. However, he has scored two goals against the Magpies in the past, both in Premier League wins for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

With attackers desperately needed at St James’ Park before Monday, Jackson looks like one to watch for Newcastle.

Kuhnemann gets through first training session in bid to beat broken thumb

Matt Kuhnemann admitted he briefly feared his thumb injury could have ended his hopes of touring Sri Lanka but both he and Steven Smith completed full training sessions on the squad’s arrival in Galle for the Test series.Australia’s premier left-arm spinner Kuhnemann is now pain-free after wearing a ball on his non-bowling hand playing for Brisbane Heat earlier this month. He reunited with the squad in Sri Lanka at the weekend and completed Sunday afternoon’s first full session since arriving on the island for the two-match series.Related

Stand-in captain Smith, who suffered a minor elbow injury in the BBL, spent as much time batting in the nets as anyone else and did not appear hampered.Every team member attended the optional session, with conditions so humid that top-order option Sam Konstas removed his helmet to finish batting in the nets.Apparently in preparation for the turning conditions, allrounder Beau Webster bowled the right-arm offspin of earlier in his career rather than the medium pace trotted out on Test debut at the SCG earlier this month.Kuhnemann is continuing to wear a brace on his right thumb and medical staff will monitor him. His injury appeared more serious than Smith’s, but Kuhnemann feels fit ahead of the first Test that begins on January 29.Matt Kuhnemann bowls at training with a protection on his injured thumb•Getty Images

“I had a couple of sessions back home and I was obviously cautious batting and fielding and everything but bowling, I haven’t had a problem whatsoever,” Kuhnemann said prior to the first training session. “I did this same thumb a couple of years ago and it was real painful but this one has been fine from the get-go.”As he awaited surgery, Kuhnemann said he was unsure whether he would have the chance to add to his three Test caps in Sri Lanka. The 28-year-old was a late call-up when Australia toured India in 2023, and the lack of subcontinent visits since had robbed him of further chances.”Definitely there were times when I was disappointed. It’s not great timing,” Kuhnemann said when asked whether he feared for his ability to tour. “There was a couple of hours. But I believe everything happens for a reason and you sort of move on. Obviously you do everything you can because these tours don’t come around very often as a spinner.”Kuhnemann could not attend the squad’s preparatory camp at the ICC Academy in Dubai but managed a hit-out with a Cricket Australia XI against England Lions at Allan Border Field last week.”The boys said I didn’t miss out on too much and what I was bowling on back in Brisbane was an eight-day old wicket so it worked out pretty good,” Kuhnemann said. “If it was the off-season then maybe it would be a blow to miss Dubai but we’re in the middle of summer and the workloads and confidence are high. Everything is all good.”

‘Only Kylian Mbappe is better' – Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy given 'world-class' billing as director addresses transfer rumours

Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy has been labelled "world-class" by sporting director Sebastian Kehl amid his impressive performances for the German club. With four goals from three games already in the Bundesliga, the striker is in fine form and the club chief insists only Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe can match him in one area.

  • Guirassy release clause talk launched transfer speculation

Rumours have suggested that Guirassy’s representatives had approached other clubs about a transfer in the summer, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain linked amid talk of a special release clause in his contract.

However, Kehl has dismissed any such claims, clarifying that there were no talks held with either the player or his entourage regarding a transfer. Furthermore, he stressed that the German side would not give up the striker they feel is better than all but one, pointing to his 13 goals in the Champions League last season as a big reason to keep him.

“A €70 million release clause? As a matter of principle, I don't comment on the details of the contracts, but I can reassure you that there were no conversations with Serhou or his agent over the summer about leaving the club," he told reporters. "He's been through difficult periods in his career but has matured incredibly. The numbers confirm this: top scorer in the Champions League last year, 31 goals in official matches in 2025. Only Kylian Mbappe has a better average and this shows the level we're talking about."

  • Guirassy to lead Dortmund against Juventus

Dortmund will hope that Guirassy can recreate his excellent European form when their Champions League campaign kicks off with an away game against Juventus. The Guinean forward, who has already netted five times in four games across the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, will be leading the Black and Yellows' attacking third. His staggering 18 goal contributions – 13 goals and five assists – in 14 Champions League fixtures last term act as testament to his prowess.

Here’s a detailed look at Arsenal’s 10 most expensive signings:

10 Alexandre Lacazette £46.5m from Lyon, 2017

French forward Alexandre Lacazette joined Arsenal in 2017 from Lyon after spending his entire career with the Ligue 1 side.

He went on to have five years at the Emirates, making more than 200 appearances and scoring 71 times, winning the FA Cup. Lacazette left Arsenal on a free transfer, returning to Lyon where he will go down as a club icon.

9 Ben White £50m from Brighton, 2021

After starring out on loan with Leeds United in the Championship and making an impact in the Premier League with Brighton, Arsenal won the race to sign Ben White in 2021.

The versatile defender has been a regular for Arsenal since then and has been transformed into a right-back under Arteta, with his contract with the Gunners running until 2028.

8 Noni Madueke £52m from Chelsea, 2025

Noni Madueke was one of Arsenal’s first summer signings of 2025, swapping Stamford Bridge for the Emirates in a deal worth a total of £52m.

The Gunners would go on to spend a lot more ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Madueke penning a five-year contract.

7 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang £56m from Borussia Dortmund, 2018

In 2018, Arsenal spent big to add more firepower to their attack, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joining from Borussia Dortmund. In total, Aubameyang would go on to score 92 goals in 163 appearances, scoring the winner in the 2020 FA Cup final.

Aubameyang and Lacazette struck up a good relationship in north London, but like his former strike partner, he left Arsenal in 2022 before returning to England for a short stint with Chelsea.

6 Martin Zubimendi £60m from Real Sociedad, 2025

Central midfielder Martin Zubimendi almost signed for Liverpool in 2024, however, six months later, Arsenal were putting plans in place to sign the Spaniard ahead of those at Anfield.

A transfer was put in place in January 2025 and Zubimendi moved to north London six months later.

5 Viktor Gyokeres £63m from Sporting CP

Signing a new striker was Arsenal’s biggest priority in 2025, and Viktor Gyokeres was the centre-forward tasked with leading the Gunners’ line.

After scoring for fun with Sporting CP, Arsenal spent a total of £63m to win the race for the Sweden international, who only wanted the Gunners.

4 Kai Havertz £65m from Chelsea, 2023

Chelsea recouped the majority of the transfer fee they paid Bayer Leverkusen for Kai Havertz when selling him to Arsenal in 2023, with the German attacker penning a five-year deal at the Emirates.

The versatile forward has been deployed in numerous positions by Arteta so far and looks to be a valuable signing going forward.

3 Eberechi Eze £67.5m from Crystal Palace, 2025

Eberechi Eze’s move to Arsenal in 2025 was one of the most dramatic, with the attacking midfielder so close to joining rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Before he signed for Spurs on the dotted line, boyhood Gunner Eze phoned Arteta, which led to Arsenal hijacking a transfer and sealing a deal with Crystal Palace worth a total of £67.5m.

2 Nicolas Pepe £72m from Lille, 2019

A big-money signing that ultimately didn’t work out was Nicolas Pepe. Arsenal splashed the cash on the Ivorian back in 2019 after starring in France for Lille.

However, Pepe never really got to grips with life in England and, after making 112 appearances for the club, scoring 27 times, left in 2023 on a free transfer despite having 12 months remaining on his contract at the time.

1 Declan Rice £105m from West Ham, 2023

Declan Rice

Comfortably Arsenal’s record signing, Declan Rice was also wanted by Manchester City during the summer of 2023, but it was the Gunners who won the race after laying plenty of groundwork months prior.

The England international is under contract until 2028, so he looks set to be an important member of Arteta’s side for years to come.

Lanning seeks WPL glory without 'changing too much' at Delhi Capitals

They enter this WPL after losing back-to-back finals, as Lanning looks to work on “just some small things here and there”

Sruthi Ravindranath11-Feb-2025

Meg Lanning: “I feel like I’m in a good spot with my game. I always enjoy playing and batting over here in India”•BCCI

Two seasons, two top-of-the-table finishes. Two finals, but no trophies. Delhi Capitals (DC) came close to title wins in WPL 2023 and 2024, before falling short in the final against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, respectively. But for captain Meg Lanning, continuing to do what they’ve done the last two seasons along with “a few little changes” is all the team needs to go one step ahead and clinch the title in 2025.”We’ve had two good seasons without obviously being able to finish it off the way we would have liked in winning the title,” Lanning said. “I guess the key for us is maintaining what we’ve been doing well. We think we have been playing some really good cricket, and doing a lot of things right. We’re just evolving and making a few little changes here and there that we think will make a big difference, and hopefully allows us to take that next step. It’s not [a] big shift from us.”We’ve added some new players, and also the players who have been here previously have also improved and gotten better as well. We feel like we’re [at] a really good spot. It’s not [about] changing too much. We’ve been doing a lot right. It’s just some small things here and there to to take us to the next step.”Related

Shafali focuses on 'playing long innings' as she eyes India comeback

Lanning has continued to be part of franchise leagues and domestic cricket after announcing her international retirement in 2023. Not playing for Australia has given her plenty of time at home, which she enjoys, but being around young players during franchise-based tournaments and giving them advice has been gratifying, Lanning admitted. Playing these leagues before a tournament like WPL also helps her get into the “rhythm”.Lanning is not only entering this WPL season as the tournament’s highest-ever run-getter – she has 676 runs across two seasons – but also on the back of some superb scores in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), Australia’s domestic 50-over competition, where she averaged 51.14 in eight games.”Playing matches is important; there’s nothing quite like being out in the middle and being in a good rhythm with that,” she said. “I feel like those games are great for me in that respect. I feel like I’m in a good spot with my game. I always enjoy playing and batting over here in India. I’ve had some success in the past. So far, the couple [of] days I’ve been here, it’s been nice to just get used to the conditions again, and just be really clear on what my plan is and how I want to go about it.”I think having experienced international cricket for so long, I’ve picked up different things along the way on what works and what doesn’t. And I guess now I’ve got the opportunity to work with – particularly back home, but also in tournaments like this – younger players, and try and pass on some of the knowledge that I’ve picked up not just on the field but [also] off the field – in terms of how you can manage yourself with the pressures that come with playing cricket at this level.”So that’s something I try to do with any team I play in now is pass on some of that knowledge and answer any questions that any of the other players [have]. Everybody here wants to learn and ask questions, and I really loved that about the environment.”Meg Lanning on Shafali Verma: “She looks like she’s in really good touch, and enjoying herself and having fun too”•Delhi Capitals

‘I’ve got the best seat in the house’ – Lanning on batting alongside ShafaliAmong the biggest positives for DC over the last two seasons has been the Lanning-Shafali Verma opening partnership. Lanning has been the solid batter at one end with a regular flow of runs while Shafali has gone for the big shots, and together, they have broken several partnership records. So far, they have put up three 100-plus stands in the tournament, and also hold the record of the highest-ever partnership of 162, which they put up against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023, in the tournament. Lanning hopes to repeat the feat this season as well, adding how much she enjoys playing with Shafali.Shafali has been in terrific form, having returned to domestic cricket after being dropped from the Indian team in November last year. She finished as the top run-getter in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy and the One Day Challenger Trophy.”I love batting with Shafali,” Lanning said. “She often puts on a very entertaining show, and I’ve got the best seat in the house watching from the other end most of the time. In the practice game, she did a very similar thing a few days ago. She looks like she’s in really good touch, and enjoying herself and having fun too, which I think is really important. So for me, just watching her play with freedom, express herself…when she does that, that plays a really important role for our team.”I always enjoy batting with her; we get on really well. Hopefully, this season can continue on through from where we have been the first two.”
