Rahul: I'm quite used to going up and down the order

After becoming a full-time No. 5 in ODI cricket, KL Rahul had expanded his range as a middle-order batter – since 2020, nobody has a higher average than his 61.52 in that position (for a minimum of 20 innings). Not even Heinrich Klaasen, whose average is about seven points lower than Rahul’s. But in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, India were keen to break up the sequence of right-handers and hence decided to promote Axar Patel to No. 5. As a result, Rahul dropped down to No. 6, but he’s adapted to that position, too, and has been “working on boundary-hitting a lot more”.”Yeah, I do [enjoy batting at the top] – I mean, I won’t lie,” Rahul told after taking India home in the semi-final. “It’s after opening the batting in Australia in Test matches [in the last series] and having to face that attack in Australia. And, you know, red-ball [cricket] is much harder. I opened the batting there and then to come here and bat low seems a bit different, but this is how I’ve played white-ball cricket in the last four-five years.”I’m quite used to going up and down the order, so I’m just happy getting a chance to play in the middle and whatever role is given, I think it’s really helped me understand my game a lot more and I’ve had to work on boundary-hitting a lot more in the last year or so, because the last ODI we played in Sri Lanka I batted at No. 6, so I knew that’s where I’ll be batting and [we] needed a left-hander in the top order.”Related

Before the Champions Trophy, there was a toss-up between Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the keeper-batter’s spot, but Rahul, the incumbent, eventually got the nod. On Tuesday, Rahul went out to bat at the fall of Axar’s wicket, with India needing 86 in 15 overs with six wickets in hand on a tricky Dubai surface. When Virat Kohli holed out for 84, it appeared like Australia had an opening, but Rahul slammed the doors on them with an unbeaten 42 off 34 balls, including two fours and two sixes. After putting India in the final, Rahul was asked how he dealt with the uncertainty around his role.”It’s since I think 2020 that I’ve batted at No. 5 and a lot of times people forget that that’s where I’ve been batting,” Rahul said. “And every time I perform in a series and then there’s a break from ODI series, ODI cricket, and then we come back after four or five months there’s a question mark again about ‘oh well, will he play in the XI, where does he fit’ and sometimes I’m sitting there thinking what more can I do. Everywhere that I’ve been asked to play I’ve played, and I feel like I have performed my role, whatever’s been told to me by Rohit [Sharma]…”And whatever he’s told me I feel like I’ve done that to the best of my ability. And I know that Rohit feels the same and he’s always supported me and backed me with that. So there’s that confidence going into game that the captain has my back.”KL Rahul paced his innings smartly in India’s chase•AFP/Getty Images

Though Dubai had rolled out a fresh pitch for the semi-final, it was still slow and conducive to spin. It was one of those pitches where it was difficult to rotate strike, so Rahul felt that it was worth taking a risk every over, especially when Kohli was in supreme control at the other end. Rahul took Tanveer Sangha, Ben Dwarshuis and Adam Zampa for a brace of fours and a six in quick succession before Kohli was caught at long-on. Hardik Pandya did his job but also holed out later, and Rahul got the job done with Ravindra Jadeja.”When I walked in and when I played ten-12 balls, I told him that you’re the batter that needs to go on and be there till the end, and let me try and hit or let me try and take one chance an over,” Rahul said of his chat with Kohli. “Because we only needed 6 runs an over. But 6 runs an over on that wicket seemed like 8-8.5. So, you had to take one chance an over, one boundary or one six.”So, I told him that I will do that and why don’t you just rotate the strike and be there because you’re the set batter and it might be harder [for me]. If you get out another batter comes, it becomes a lot harder. But yeah, he felt like it was in his range to hit and yeah, he didn’t time it well.”

Athapaththu to leave WPL early to play for Sri Lanka

Her departure will be the second big blow for UPW who are already without their full-time captain Alyssa Healy because of injury

Vishal Dikshit18-Feb-2025Chamari Athapaththu is set to miss the final phase of the WPL for UP Warriorz (UPW) to join Sri Lanka on a white-ball tour of New Zealand starting March 4 in Napier. Athapaththu’s departure will be the second big blow for UPW who are already without their full-time captain Alyssa Healy because of injury.ESPNcricinfo has learnt that as of now, Athapaththu is going to be available for UPW until February 26, which is four more games for them, before she tends to national duties. After their game on February 26, against Mumbai Indians in Bengaluru, UPW will fly to Lucknow for the final league phase of the tournament where they will play three home matches. They have played just one game so far and they left Athapaththu out of the XI in that clash they lost to Gujarat Giants.Athapaththu was named captain of Sri Lanka’s 16-member side released by SLC on Monday and the squad is scheduled to leave for New Zealand on February 22 for three ODIs and as many T20Is.Allrounder Amelia Kerr is the only New Zealand player in the WPL this season and she, unlike Athapaththu, is going to miss the bilateral series next month to play the entire WPL, including the knockouts if MI qualify for those again. If MI make it to the final, scheduled for March 15, Kerr will also miss the first two T20is slotted for March 14 and 16 in Christchurch. Last year too, Kerr had skipped the home bilateral T20Is against England to be available for the entire duration of the WPL.In 2024, the calendar clash between the final leg of WPL and the T20I series in New Zealand had become a much bigger issue when England captain Heather Knight (RCB) and Lauren Bell (UPW) had opted out of WPL completely to represent their national team. Coincidentally, Athapaththu had replaced Bell for UPW then. However, since then boards like the ECB have assured their players they won’t schedule international games during the WPL, which is set to move from the current February-March window to January-February 2026 onwards, according to the new women’s Future Tours Programme (FTP). To avoid such clashes between international series and other T20 leagues, the Hundred (August) and the WBBL (November) have also been given separate windows in the FTP that runs till 2029.

Liverpool made approach for a Guehi alternative as soon as the window ended

Liverpool have made an approach for a Premier League player and Marc Guehi alternative – one who has been hailed for his “ambitious” nature.

Guehi "extremely unhappy" after failed Liverpool move

The Reds completed a superb summer transfer window by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record fee of £125m, but it could have been even better.

It looked as though Liverpool would also snap up Guehi, agreeing a long-term move with the Englishman, only to see Crystal Palace deny him his move at the eleventh hour. Manager Oliver Glasner reportedly threatened to quit if the 25-year-old was sold to the Reds, with the Eagles not having enough centre-back depth without him.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

It has made for an ugly situation, with Guehi thought to be “extremely unhappy” at the situation, according to journalist Ed Aarons, and he is now unlikely to sign a new deal ahead of his current contract expiring next summer. That will then allow him to depart on a free transfer.

Liverpool may need to look at different defenders looking ahead, should they feel that their chance of signing Guehi has been and gone, and another Premier League player has been linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool make approach for Nathan Collins

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool have made an approach for Brentford captain Nathan Collins, potentially seeing him as a different option to Guehi moving forward. It’s worth stressing that a formal offer hasn’t been lodged, but the Premier League champions do see the £43m-rated Irishman as “on their shortlist of defensive targets”.

Nathan Collins in action for Brentford

Collins would be a solid signing for Liverpool, having impressed as both a performer and a leader for Brentford, being hailed by Thomas Frank during their time working together.

“He can carry the ball out of defence and also has the composure to find the right pass during build-up play. His character is really good, and we know that character is everything. He will fit into our culture, I have no doubt about that. I see leadership potential in Nathan. He’s a perfect Brentford player – hungry and ambitious with a desire to learn.”

With all due respect to the Brentford skipper, though, Guehi still stands out as the leading option for Liverpool, whether that be in January or beyond. He has become one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders, and has every chance of starting for England at next summer’s World Cup, and they shouldn’t give up on signing him after one hiccup.

Isak can do the one thing for Liverpool that Haaland never did at Man City

The Swede could already hand the Reds one key advantage.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 2, 2025

But Collins could be a shrewd alternative, and he is a year younger than Guehi, allowing Arne Slot to bring him in at a good age and turn him into an even more formidable all-round defender.

Thomas Frank confirms he wants Tottenham to re-sign Harry Kane as talk over emotional return from Bayern Munich becomes more concrete

Thomas Frank has confirmed that he would love Tottenham to re-sign Harry Kane from Bayern Munich. The England captain departed north London in 2023 and has won the Bundesliga in Germany, but Frank has now confirmed that he would be more than willing to welcome him back with open arms, should the opportunity arise.

  • A clause in Kane's contract

Football.London has reported that Kane is believed to have a release clause in his contract worth just under £57 million ($77m) that kicks in next summer, provided the striker confirms his desire to leave before the end of the January window. Spurs also have first option on their former talisman, having negotiated the clause when he was sold.

    Could he make emotional return?

Kane is only 47 goals shy of Alan Shearer's Premier League goals record, and there are said to be fears within Bayern that he could leave before the end of his four-year contract. The 32-year-old has won the trophy he long craved in Germany, and may now be minded to return to his homeland.

  • Frank fans flames

Spurs boss Frank has insisted that he would love to have Kane in his squad, should he become available.

He said: "I think there’s a lot of Tottenham fans including myself who would like to see Kane back. He’s a top player. Personally, I don't think he will do it right now, if I’m honest, he’ll probably stay in Bayern and continue performing well.

"He was top scorer last year and won the championship, he’s doing fantastic now. I don’t know what he’s thinking. Myself, I’m a traveller, I like to travel, I like to explore things as well. He’s been here for many years so why not enjoy the time at Bayern a little bit more.

"But he’s welcome. If he wants to join us, he’s more than welcome."

    Twists and turns to come

Kane's future is likely to be in the spotlight until January, given the apparent existence of the exit clause in his contract. He will next be in action when Bayern play Werder Bremen on Friday. Spurs, meanwhile, are set to face Doncaster in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.

Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, the BCB director, wants Phil Simmons to continue in his role as Bangladesh head coach till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Fahim said the board would have official discussions with Simmons soon, and is hoping to get him for the role on a long-term basis. The contract extension was one of several topics discussed during a board meeting in Dhaka on Monday.Simmons was appointed in October last year on an interim role. During his four-month stint, Bangladesh won just one series, a 3-0 win against West Indies in T20Is. The team made an early exit from the Champions Trophy, too, after losing to India and New Zealand. Their last game, against Pakistan, was washed out.Related

Despite that, Simmons has won the approval of both the BCB president Faruque Ahmed and director Fahim, the two most influential figures in the current board.”The contracts of our head coach and senior assistant coach was till mid-March,” Fahim said. “We are satisfied with them, so we will get in touch with them for renegotiation. If we can’t get into an understanding with them, we have to think about other options. We are hopeful of reaching a mutual understanding with them. We are thinking of extending their contracts till the 2027 World Cup.”We will speak to him formally very soon. I have seen him from up close. I am convinced he will do well with the Bangladesh team. I have also seen the interpersonal relationships he has with the local coaches and the players. I think he will do well here.”The BCB is also set to renew the contract of senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin, who was also appointed on a short-term basis last November. One of the reasons that the board has felt encouraged to renew the contracts of both Simmons and Salahuddin is their willingness to work with each other. ESPNcricinfo understands that one of Simmons’ mandates was to give freedom to local coaches. In addition, the board has decided to renew the contract of spin-bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed, while also accepting Hannan Sarkar’s resignation as a selector. Fahim said that the BCB is also keen on improving the fielding in the senior team. To achieve that, the board is talking to multiple fielding coaches to join the set-up.

Idah upgrade: Celtic consider last-gasp bid for "extraordinary" £8m star

At the start of the calendar year, Celtic had Adam Idah, Johnny Kenny, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Daizen Maeda on their books as options in the number nine position.

Kyogo, of course, left to sign for Rennes in the January transfer window, and Kenny is still a young player who needs time to develop and improve before he is a frontline option.

Earlier this month, Brendan Rodgers said: “I think it’s very clear. We need to improve in the front end of the pitch. The attacking department has always, and always will be, the strengths of my teams. We’ve lost important players in that area, and we need to replace players in that area.”

The Celtic head coach is now set to lose another option in that centre-forward role, as Anthony Joseph reports that Idah is closing in on a permanent move to Swansea.

He is set to undergo a medical in Wales on Friday before putting the finishing touches on a move to the EFL Championship side before the end of the summer transfer window on Monday.

The Ireland international’s exit will leave Celtic with Kenny and Shin Yamada as their only natural striker options, whilst Maeda can, of course, play there.

Celtic have had a nightmare with Adam Idah

It is hard not to feel that the Scottish giants have had a nightmare with the Irish centre-forward, who they only signed from Norwich City on a permanent deal last summer.

The club reportedly paid an initial fee of £8.5m, which could have gone up to £9.5m, and Swansea have now agreed a deal that is worth up to £7m for the 6 foot 3 attacker.

This means that the Scottish Premiership champions have made a loss of at least £1.5m on Idah just 12 months on from signing him from the Canaries, which is hard to defend from a recruitment perspective.

The number nine had his moments in a Celtic shirt, as shown by the clip above, but he was nowhere near reliable enough as a starting option for Rodgers.

As you can see in the table above, Idah only scored six goals in 19 matches in the Premiership for the Scottish giants in his only full season at the club.

This may be one of the reasons why the club decided to sanction a permanent transfer to Swansea after just one year, because he failed to prove that he could deliver consistently as a starter.

Ultimately, Rodgers could not trust him to start week-in-week-out and they may have expected more from a player they were willing to spend up to £9.5m in 2024.

Celtic prepare offer for new striker

According to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, Celtic are considering a last-gasp offer to sign Anderlecht centre-forward Kasper Dolberg in an attempt to replace Idah.

The journalist claims that the Denmark international is the club’s number one target to fill the soon-to-be vacant number nine shirt at Parkhead.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Joseph also reveals that the Hoops are in talks with Anderlecht over a move for the experienced marksman, as they look to bring him in before the deadline on Monday.

He adds that the Scottish giants were quoted a fee of around £10m for the forward earlier this summer, but it remains to be seen if that is still the case.

The journalist claims that Anderlecht are open to cashing in on the former Ajax and Nice star after they were knocked out of Europe by losing 3-1 to AEK on aggregate, which has presented Celtic with the opportunity to swoop in now that Idah is on his way out of the club.

Why Celtic should sign Kasper Dolberg

The board should be pushing to get a deal for the Pro League forward over the line before the deadline on Monday because he could arrive as a big upgrade on Idah in the number nine position.

As aforementioned, the £9.5m signing from Norwich simply did not do enough when given chances as a starting striker for Celtic to be relied upon as the main man for goals.

Dolberg, however, is a player who could be that main man as an experienced and top-quality number nine who can find the back of the net on a regular basis.

The Anderlecht marksman has already scored three goals in five games at the start of the current campaign, per Sofascore, but it was his form last season that shows how much of an upgrade he would be on Idah.

As you can see in the table above, Dolberg can score goals at an impressive rate whilst starting week-in-week-out for his side, which is something that Idah failed to do.

The Danish attacker, who was once hailed as an “extraordinary talent” by John Steen Olsen, also enjoyed a greater conversion rate in front of goal and won more of his physical duels with opposition defenders.

These statistics suggest that Dolberg could offer far more to the team as a regular starter than Idah did, certainly in the Premiership, as a lethal centre-forward who can finish chances efficiently, as shown by his goal return versus his xG.

At the age of 27, Celtic would also be signing a player who is in the prime years of his career and can be expected to hit the ground running as an instant and reliable performer, rather than coming in as a young and unproven talent who would need time to adjust and develop.

Better than Saracchi: Celtic in race to sign "technically gifted" £9m star

As Celtic search for a new left-back before the deadline, the Hoops should forget about Marcelo Saracchi and sign a “technically gifted” star instead.

Therefore, Dolberg could be a fantastic addition to the squad as a big upgrade on Idah as a starter if they can get the deal over the line in the coming days.

As important as Bruno: Key target boarding private jet to sign for Man Utd

The last week has been full of ups and downs for Manchester United, leading to huge questions being asked about the long-term future of Ruben Amorim.

His side fell to an embarrassing Carabao Cup second-round exit to League Two outfit Grimsby Town – in what was one of the worst defeats in the club’s history.

The Red Devils nearly dropped points in the recent Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford, subsequently having to rely on a late Bruno Fernandes penalty to claim all three points against the newly promoted side.

With the transfer window slamming shut at 7pm tonight, the manager and the board will have to act quickly if they are to add further bodies to the first-team squad.

Moves have been explored by the hierarchy all window long, but it appears as though one more looks set to reach its conclusion within the next couple of hours.

The latest on United’s hunt for deadline day moves

Despite the focus mainly being on incomings in recent days, outgoings have also been prevalent at United to try and raise funds for Amorim in the hours ahead.

Antony, Rasmus Hojlund and Jadon Sancho are all set to depart Old Trafford, with the latter two leaving on initial loan deals – whilst the former is set to rejoin Real Betis on a permanent deal.

Jadon Sancho in action for Man United in the Premier League.

However, a deal looks set to be confirmed later today, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens looking certain to be a Red Devils player before the 7pm deadline.

It’s been reported by HLN via Sport Witness that the 23-year-old has been pictured boarding a private jet to Manchester, after an £18m transfer fee was agreed between the two clubs.

Why United’s latest signing would be as important as Bruno

Bruno has been a shining light for United over recent seasons, often coming up with the goods at key moments, as seen by his last-minute spot-kick against Burnley.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Red Devils from Sporting CP back in the winter window of 2020 – tasked with providing added quality in attacking areas in the post-Jose Mourinho era.

Bruno Fernandes

He’s done just that over recent seasons, catapulting the side to a place in the Champions League back in his first season – going on to rack up a staggering 98 goals in his 294 appearances.

Such numbers saved Amorim’s side from an even more embarrassing finish last campaign – with the pending arrival of Lammens also doing just that for the Red Devils this summer.

The goalkeeping situation has been dire at Old Trafford in recent months, with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir both failing to nail down the number one spot in recent months.

The pair have both made numerous mistakes in the last couple of outings against Burnley and Grimsby – leading to their move to land Lammens before the deadline.

Lammens, who’s a Belgian international, starred at Royal Antwerp last season, keeping ten clean sheets in his 41 appearances in the top division of Belgian football.

The youngster also achieved a 77% save percentage, whilst also saving 50% of the penalties he faced – ranking him in the 95th percentile of all ‘keepers in Europe last campaign.

Other stats, such as his 72% pass accuracy, have also caught the eye – handing Amorim a ball-playing option that could prove a chance to build up play from the back when needed.

Given the fact that Lammens has travelled to Manchester to complete a move, it’s now just a matter of time before he can be considered a United player.

Should he replicate his numbers from last season, it would be an excellent deal, hopefully having the same impact Bruno did five years ago – subsequently solving one of the biggest issues in the current squad.

Tottenham willing to make huge offer for £80m star who's "keen" on N17 move

Tottenham Hotspur are now willing to make a huge offer for an “incredible” £80m forward, who is now “keen” on a move to north London this summer, it has been revealed.

Spurs remain keen on new winger after losing Son Heung-min

Son Heung-min made the extremely difficult decision to leave Tottenham this summer, making the move to LAFC, and the South Korean has gotten off to a fantastic start in the MLS, recently picking up his first assist.

It was arguably the right time to cash-in on Son, given that the Spurs legend is now 33-years-old, and Brennan Johnson has proven he could be up to the task of being the long-term replacement at left-wing, scoring against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

However, with Son leaving, and James Maddison set to miss the majority of the campaign due to an ACL injury, Thomas Frank is light on options in attacking areas, and remains keen on adding another winger to his squad.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Savinho’s agents are trying to get a move to north London over the line, and there has now been a new update on Tottenham’s pursuit of the Manchester City winger.

According to a report from Spain, Spurs are now willing to make a new offer for the Brazilian, having already had a £60m bid knocked back, and there is a feeling that a deal could be possible.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 17, 2025

While City are keen to keep hold of the winger, they could be tempted to cash-in if an ‘irresistible’ offer arrives, with Pep Guardiola’s side valuing the 21-year-old at the £70m – £80m mark.

Fabrizio Romano has also revealed the youngster is “keen” on a move to north London, with talks still ongoing.

"Incredible" Savinho could be ideal Son heir

It is little wonder Man City are hesitant to sell the young winger, given that he is held in very high regard by Guardiola, who waxed lyrical about the forward after impressing against Leicester City last season.

The City boss said: “He’s a guy who can play on both sides, today he finally scored a goal. He has an incredible ability and quality he’s proven in that period.”

The Brazil international is also fantastic at dribbling and providing assists, indicating that he could be the ideal option to replace Son at left-wing.

The only thing that Savinho needs to improve is his end product, having averaged just 0.08 non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, despite an xG of 0.25 per 90, and if the starlet is able to rectify that aspect of his game, he could be a fantastic signing for Tottenham.
