Paul Walter continues to make opener slot his own as Essex dominate

The left-hander’s third first-class hundred came after Worcestershire were bowled out for 202

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay19-Apr-2025Paul Walter scored his third career first-class century to steady a listing Essex ship and help towards setting up a run chase for Worcestershire at Chelmsford. The 30-year-old left-hander has been auditioning in the first three Rothesay County Championship matches for the vacant opening spot alongside Dean Elgar when the South African returns for paternity leave at the end of the month. Walter has already accumulated 317 runs in five innings this season at an average of 79.25.His 104 from 154 balls guided Essex from 128 for 5, and a lead of just 105 at that point, to a more comfortable 211-6 when he was eventually out following a stand of 83 with Noah Thain. At the close, Essex were 233 for 6 with a lead of 210 and Thain had reach a career-best 49 not out.Worcestershire’s first-innings total of 202 was built largely on a 102-run fifth wicket partnership between the not-out overnight pair of Adam Hose and Brett D’Oliveira, who both departed for identical scores of 48 from 78 balls. Both also fell victim to Essex’s Sri Lankan debutant Kasun Rajitha, whose pace helped him finish with 4 for 52.Essex needed just six overs to wipe out the 23-run deficit as Walter and Charlie Allison built a patient first-wicket stand of 53. Allison had already creamed his brother Ben – late of Essex, now of Worcestershire – past cover point for four. But he was first out when he slashed at Matthew Waite and was caught behind. Waite doubled his wicket tally when he had Tom Westley playing an indeterminate shot and being pinned lbw.Walter combined with Jordan Cox in a big-hitting stand of 48 in seven overs that included three fours in one Tom Taylor over for Cox. However, in attempting to hammer Taylor out of the ground Cox chipped up tamely to mid-on and departed for 24 from 21 balls.Walter was particularly strong off the backfoot where he gained the majority of his 13 boundaries. There was, in addition, a powerful hook off Jacob Duffy that brooked no argument.Walter lost further partners in quick succession when Matt Critchley went for a wild swing at Eathan Brookes, who walked across to short midwicket to take the skier. And the injured Michael Pepper, again with the aid of Allison as his runner, lasted just seven balls before his off-stump was sent cartwheeling by a rampant Waite. However, he found a willing partner in Thain and the pair settled into a lively rhythm. Walter’s 13th boundary, a pull off Brookes, took him to his century from 149 balls. Walter was eventually out after four hours and 15 minutes when Taylor beat his forward lunge and upended his middle-stump.At the start of the day Hose and D’Oliveira continued to reprise their match-saving century partnership of two weeks ago at Taunton. Coming together at a perilous 22 for 4, they passed three-figures again in a 25-over stand that ended in controversy.Hose edged Rajitha and Walter claimed the catch low down at first slip. Hose refused to walk while the umpires conferred to adjudicate whether the ball had actually carried. They came down on the side of the fielder, though subsequent replays were inconclusive.D’Oliveira departed in Rajitha’s next over, pinned lbw on his crease without offering a meaningful shot. Waite kept the scoreboard clicking over at nearly a run a ball until he swatted at a short delivery from Jamie Porter and was caught behind by substitute wicketkeeper Simon Fernandes, fielding in place of Pepper.Walter took a more regulation slip catch, this time around waist-height, to dismiss Brookes off Thain. The innings was wrapped up when Snater snapped up Taylor at midwicket to give Rajitha a fourth wicket before Thain took a second wicket when Allison was caught behind.

Thomas Tuchel provides alarming injury update on Cole Palmer as 'concerned' England boss casts doubt over Chelsea talisman's long-term fitness & World Cup hopes

England boss Thomas Tuchel has sounded an alarming warning for England and Chelsea star Cole Palmer, saying his persistent injury issues are threatening his World Cup hopes. And, what’s more concerning, the German boss fears Palmer’s groin problem could become chronic and impact his career longer-term.

  • Worrying news for England star

Tuchel was speaking ahead of England’s forthcoming fixtures, a friendly with Wales and World Cup qualifier against Latvia, both of which Palmer will miss. The 23-year-old has been dealing with a recurring groin injury in the early weeks of this season, which has limited his playing time for club and country. This issue first arose during a short pre-season period after Chelsea's Club World Cup success in the summer. He was reportedly rushed back to play against Manchester United in September, only to be forced off after just 21 minutes when the injury flared up again.

England boss fears for Palmer’s future

Tuchel was brutally honest as he spoke ahead of the friendly with Wales, but the message to Palmer was loud and clear. The Three Lions boss said: "He was only in the June camp, that is concerning, of course. First of all, the most important thing is that he can play without pain, because the groin issue is a very dangerous one to become chronic. This is the most important thing. When he's fit and when he has rhythm and flow, he can decide matches on club level and, for sure, on international level. We know that. There is also with him no problem at all (for me). We clearly understand and see the potential and the quality, but there is also a reality that he was not available in five of the (last) seven camps, so right now there are two camps left before the World Cup."

Chelsea’s first game back after the international break is away at Nottingham Forest on October 18th, but Tuchel is doubtful Palmer will be fit for that one. He added: "It would surprise me this time if he was able to play."

  • Did team-mate worsen injury?

Enzo Maresca confirmed that Palmer would be rested until after the October international break to allow the injury to heal, which ruled him out of the Premier League matches against Brighton and Liverpool, a Champions League meeting with Benfica and a Carabao Cup tie at Lincoln. The head coach has stated that surgery is not currently deemed necessary and the plan is to manage the pain.

But did his Chelsea team-mate Jarrel Hato make the injury worse? During celebrations following Chelsea's dramatic win against Liverpool the Dutchman jumped into Palmer to celebrate Estevao's late goal, and TV cameras captured Palmer grimacing and clutching his left groin area. The incident caused significant concern among fans, who worried that Hato's innocent but misguided exuberance had aggravated Palmer's chronic issue.

    World Cup woes for Palmer?

This ongoing issue raises concerns about Palmer's potential availability for next year’s World Cup. While he is considered one of England's most talented players, his recurring fitness troubles could hinder his chances of securing a starring role for the Three Lions at the World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada next summer. Palmer is running out of opportunities to show Tuchel what he can do, as there are just two World Cup qualifiers to come after the Latvia clash and limited international windows in the build-up to the World Cup.

Aston Villa now reach agreement to sign "brilliant" star ahead of Everton

Setting their sights on a busy end to the transfer window, Aston Villa have now reportedly agreed a deal to sign a bargain defender ahead of Premier League rivals Everton.

Aston Villa's deadline day plans

Ahead of Monday’s deadline, Villa Park chiefs have suddenly burst into life in the transfer market. Unai Emery could yet welcome a number of reinforcements before the window slams shut as a result and get his wish of two players in every position.

One of those could, of course, be Marco Asensio. The Paris Saint-Germain winger enjoyed a successful loan spell in the Midlands last season and now looks destined to complete a permanent move just in time. And he’s not the only one on Villa’s radar.

As reported by Sacha Tavolieri, the final day of the transfer window could yet see a major goalkeeper saga unfold. The transfer reporter claimed that Manchester United have now turned their focus towards Emiliano Martinez rather than Senne Lammens and, as such, Aston Villa are targeting a move for Porto’s Diogo Costa.

The reporter even went as far as to say that the Villans are in advanced talks to sign the shot-stopper, who would be an instant replacement for Martinez if he heads to Manchester United.

The World Cup winner has been linked with a move away from Villa Park all summer long and now looks set to get his move. Villa, meanwhile, have reportedly agreed a deal to welcome another defensive reinforcement.

Aston Villa set to sign Lindelof

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa have now reached an “agreement” to sign Victor Lindelof, whose medical is already “underway” ahead of becoming the latest player to arrive in the Midlands. Joining as a free agent, the Villans are set to welcome an experienced central defender at a bargain price.

Whilst Lindelof’s arrival won’t steal the same headlines as Costa might, he may prove to be just as important. The 31-year-old has played at a very top level and is no stranger to the Premier League after spending eight years at Manchester United.

In a mixed spell, the Swede also still earned plenty of praise. Former United graduate Fraizer Campbell described the defender as “brilliant” in the 2023/24 campaign and there’s still every chance that he can reach those same levels at Villa Park.

USWNT's Trinity Rodman diagnosed with MCL sprain, avoids serious injury after tearful exit in Washington Spirit win

Trinity Rodman has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 MCL sprain, having seemingly avoided a more serious injury after being helped off the field in tears during Wednesday's 4-0 win over Monterrey in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. There has been no timetable set for her return, but Rodman is expected to miss the U.S. women's national team's upcoming friendlies.

  • Getty Images Sport

    An untimely injury

Rodman's injury came just hours after she was named to the USWNT's latest squad. The Spirit winger has not been with the national team since April due to a long-term back injury.

Rodman was seen in tears as she was helped off the field during Wednesday's match, with the winger seemingly unable to put pressure on her right leg. Later in the evening, she was seen on crutches while wearing a brace on her knee. Many were left fearing the worst, but Spirit boss Adrian Gonzalez provided something of a positive update, even if it now seems that Rodman could end up missing at least part of the NWSL playoffs.

"She's at the facility today starting the rehab; she's doing good," Gonzalez said. "The results that we got are the best scenario. Obviously, an injury is not always a good situation. It's not as bad as it could be. She's starting now the rehab.

"She has an MCL sprain. It's not too big, too much, but we need to see how she's doing every day, start the rehab today, and try to support her in this situation."

    The situation

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Gonzalez offered some insight into Rodman's injury, but was unable to provide an exact timetable for her recovery.

"All players are different," Gonzalez said. "We are taking care of every player as an individual in terms of how we prepare [for] the weeks, the games, and trying to individualize as much as possible the loads. Obviously, every player has a different background, and we always are taking care of those details.

"Right now, we need to focus on day by day, try to help her to recover, to heal as best as possible, and let's see how she's progressing every day."

    Tough break for USWNT

The injury will be bad news for Emma Hayes and the USWNT, who were looking forward to welcoming Rodman back into the fold after several months away from the team. Rodman had missed time with the Spirit from April to August battling a recurring back injury, but the winger had been back to her best since returning a few weeks back and now has seven goal contributions in under 1,000 minutes of gametime.

"I know she's excited to come back in and play for a national team, but she's doing it in a place where I think she's had to build a lot of foundational work around her back," Hayes said on Wednesday, hours before Rodman suffered her injury. "She's one of the best players in the world, and we've had to play without her for more than a year. So I'm, of course, super excited that she's back in – but most importantly that she's here with us in a healthy place."

    Championship rematch ahead…

The Spirit are set to be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NWSL playoffs, which are set to kick off in three weeks time. Last season, the club made it all the way to the NWSL Championship game before falling to the Orlando Pride in the season finale.

The Spirit are set to face last season's Champions in a final rematch on Saturday before concluding the season on Nov. 2 with a visit to the Utah Royals.

'I spent my whole life there' – Harry Kane addresses prospect of Tottenham return next summer amid reports of potential Bayern Munich exit

Harry Kane says he is not thinking about a possible return to Tottenham next summer amid reports the north London club are keen to bring him back from Bayern Munich. The England captain left in 2023 and has since hit new heights on the pitch, bagging 21 goals in all competitions already this season.

Kane in the form of his life at Bayern

Having established himself as a Premier League and Tottenham legend, it was inevitable that during his time as a Bayern Munich player, he was going to be continuously subjected to rumours of a return. The 32-year-old does have unfinished business back in England, where he failed to win silverware at his boyhood club and left short of Alan Shearer's goalscoring record in the division. But having moved to one of Europe's giants, Kane will surely find it difficult to depart his current side, where he is leading the charge towards consecutive Bundesliga titles.

So far this term, Kane is scoring at a rate only matched by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in previous years. He already has 18 goals for Bayern across all competitions, alongside three for England. He is averaging a goal or assist every 39 minutes so far – an achievement he will do well to maintain for the remaining months of the season.

Having lifted the first major silverware of his career last year under Vincent Kompany, the England skipper remains adamant he wants to earn more medals, and can think of no better club to do it at than the current German champions.

AdvertisementGetty Images'They will always be part of my life'

Kane spent the majority of his career at Spurs. He came through the academy, broke into the team under Tim Sherwood, before really kicking on under Mauricio Pochettino. He played in multiple finals with the club he once called home, but never managed to overcome the biggest hurdle of winning a major trophy in England. Despite that, Tottenham are believed to have a buy-back clause in Kane's contract, which is rumoured to become active from January 2026. They may have that option, but the decision will ultimately lie with the player, and as it stands, Bayern remains his priority.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Kane said: "I’m not sure (if I’ll go back), I’m very happy here in Munich. It’s not something I'm thinking about. It’ll always be "we" (with Spurs) because I spent my whole life there. I’m a fan of them and will always watch them and see how they’re getting on. They will always be a part of my life for sure but as for now, I’m loving it here.

"It was great to see (them win a trophy this year). I’ve got a lot of friends there with the players and staff.

"We know how long we waited and how close we’d come in the past so it was big for everyone – the fans, the club and all involved to have that feeling and get that one over the line. That’s always important and hopefully they can push on and win more."

Thriving on the biggest stage

A player of Kane's quality should always be competing in the Champions League, and that in itself presents a stumbling block for Spurs. With competition for the four European places so rife in the Premier League, failure to qualify for next year's competition would surely close the door on Kane returning immediately. The 110-cap international always speaks very passionately about winning Europe's biggest prize, that mindset has not changed.

He added: "Bayern are known around Europe every year as one of the best and one of the favourites to win the Champions League. I wanted to test myself at that level and I’ve loved it on and off the pitch. It feels like my second home now. I’m enjoying every moment of it and hopefully it continues.

"We’ve got a great chance for all the trophies this year. Whenever you start a season with Bayern, you’re favourites. We haven’t had great cup runs since I’ve been here so we want to try and put that right.

"Then in the Champions League, it’s still early stages but ultimately it’s about trying to win the competition. And going into the World Cup, you want to be at your best."

GettyAn eventual homecoming for England's finest?

It is not surprising to hear Kane constantly repeat himself about his desire to succeed with Bayern. But there will come a moment when he has to make a decision. Should he win the Champions League this season, alongside another Bundesliga title, it would be a fitting way to end his time in Germany. Below all the current desires, Kane may still have a strong desire to make things right with Spurs, and return for one final attempt at lifting silverware with them.

If that wish does become a reality, Kane would need to bag just 48 goals to become the outright top goalscorer in the Premier League. That achievement in itself may be enough to lure him back to the city he grew up in, although there could be competition from other English sides to sign the most in-form player in Europe right now.

Arsenal have signed a "Fabregas-type" player and he's "near-perfect"

For much of the season so far, Arsenal fans have had to watch Liverpool score last-minute winner after last-minute winner.

Watching your Premier League title rival survive scare after scare has to be a draining experience, but yesterday afternoon it was the Gunners’ turn to win it at the death.

Despite clearly being the better team for most of the game against Newcastle United, Mikel Arteta’s side found themselves 1-0 for much of the encounter and staring down the barrel of yet more dropped points.

Fortunately, the North Londoners found a way to claim all three and narrow the gap to the Reds at the top of the table to just two points.

There were stand-out performances for Arsenal all over the pitch, including one starter who is starting to win comparisons to Cesc Fàbregas.

Arsenal's stand-out stars vs Newcastle

Now, while he didn’t necessarily have the best of games, falling over nothing to allow the hosts a goal early on, Gabriel Magaelehged more than made his mark by full-time.

The Brazilian titan made 11 clearances, blocked two shots, made three interceptions, won 100% of his ground duels and made three tackles.

However, it should really go without saying that his most significant impact on the game was his 96th-minute headed winner that sent the travelling fans absolutely potty.

Mikel Merino also deserves a lot of credit for his battling display, as in the 28 minutes or so he spent on the pitch, the Spaniard scored an outrageous header to kickstart the comeback, won four out of five duels and just added another avenue of attack for his side.

It wasn’t just the goal scorers who impressed, though, as Eberechi Eze put in a performance that should see him keep his place in the starting line-up for some time to come.

The former Crystal Palace star came so close to opening the scoring early on in the first half, but saw his shot pushed round the post by Nick Pope, and then, towards the end of the half, saw a perfectly struck volley saved as well.

It wasn’t just his shots that made the 27-year-old a danger to the Toon, though, as he completed 100% of his dribbles, played a key pass and was taking up threatening positions on both sides of the pitch.

In all, there were plenty of Arsenal stars who put on excellent displays yesterday afternoon, including one who has now been compared to Fabregas.

Arsenal's Fabregas-esque star

You could probably make the argument that the likes of Martin Odegaard, Eze or even Ethan Nwaneri share some Fabregas-esque qualities.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, in this instance, Martin Zubimendi is the player in question, and the comparison comes from one analyst who described the former Real Sociedad star as a “Fabregas type” player.

Now, plenty of you may be scratching your heads as the 26-year-old generally plays in a deeper role than the former international ever did for Arsenal, Barcelona, or Chelsea.

However, the position he plays in has very little to do with the comparison itself; instead, what the analyst is getting at is the fact that the summer signing is capable of playing sensational passes into dangerous areas for his teammates.

In fact, while nothing came from it in the end, we saw this in yesterday’s game when he dinked the ball over the Newcastle defence only for Pope to make a great save to deny Jurrien Timber.

That wasn’t the only chance he created, though, as by the time the game ended, he had played two key passes, amassed an expected assists figure of 0.52, been accurate in 100% of his long balls and completed 54 of 60 passes.

Moreover, he’s also been accurate in 83% of his passes in the opposition’s half in the Premier League so far this season.

In other words, he is more than just a six; he is someone who can conduct play from slightly deeper, someone who can spray passes out wide to kickstart counters, or, as we saw yesterday, ping a ball into the penalty area and cause panic among opposition defenders.

Ultimately, there is still some way to go before he reaches his full potential. However, on top of his defensive attributes, Zubimendi is proving to be a dangerous Fabregas-esque passer from deep, and as respected analyst Ben Mattinson states, he’s been “near-perfect” for Arsenal so far this season.
