Charlton trio Tomer Hemed, Beram Kayal and Erhun Oztumer still not ready to start

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has confirmed that summer signings Tomer Hemed, Beram Kayal and Erhun Oztumer are still not quite ready as they ‘need to get a bit fitter’ before they’re ready for more than a short cameo appearance.

Hemed was signed on a permanent deal from Brighton after the Seagulls agreed to cancel the striker’s contract, whilst Kayal was also signed from the Premier League side but on a loan deal instead of a permanent agreement.

In Oztumer’s case, the midfielder was signed from Bolton on a free transfer after he was granted permission to leave by the EFL.

What did he say?

Bowyer said: “Erhun Oztumer, Tomer Hemed and Beram Kayal all need to get a bit fitter. Beram played a game behind closed doors on Tuesday and got 75 minutes. He’s coming back from injury so it’s about getting them up to speed.”

Give them all the time they need

Whilst the aforementioned trio are quality additions who will presumably have a big impact, there should be no worries from the Charlton faithful concerning Bowyer’s update and they should all be given ample time to work up to speed.

The Addicks are flying right now and have won three and drawn two of their five Championship games, with the likes of Lyle Taylor in fine form and carrying the baton superbly so far with four league goals to his name.

Hemed has played 45 Championship minutes already for the south Londoners whereas Oztumer has played 62 minutes, and whilst they will surely have a big role to play along with Kayal, there is no urgent need for the trio to get back to action.

Charlton are performing well above expectations having only just achieved promotion after winning the League One playoffs, so Kayal, Hemed and Oztumer should be allowed to rest, recuperate and take all the time they need to get to 100%.

Manchester City: West Ham interested in Nicolas Otamendi but price remains issue

Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi remains a target for West Ham this summer, but the east London side could find a deal to bring the defender to the London Stadium too expensive.

[ad_pod ]

TNT Sports report that Manuel Pellegrini is keen to be reunited with his former Argentine defender, with Manuel Lanzini also a friend of Otamendi’s, but any deal to bring the former Valencia centre-back to the English capital could be scuffed due to financial problems.

The report states that City are looking for €25m (£22.89m) for the centre-back whilst also claiming that former side Valencia are also interested in the defender this summer.

Despite being named in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2017/18 Premier League season (per BBC Sport), Otamendi was relegated to a rotation role for the 2018/19 campaign as City retained the league title, with the Argentine making just 14 starts for the Cityzens in the league (per Transfermarkt).

Indeed, this lack of playing time last season has seen the Argentine linked with a move away from the Etihad this summer, with the Daily Mail reporting in May that Wolves, as well as West Ham, were interested in the defender following the aftermath of Vincent Kompany’s departure from City, but this could be the reason as to why Guardiola should consider keeping Otamendi.

With no centre-back signings as of yet, City only have three senior central defenders in the first-team squad plus outcast Eliaquim Mangala (per Transfermarkt) with just over a week of the transfer window left to go, and although Otamendi was reduced to limited appearances last season, Pep Guardiola will seemingly be brash to sell the Argentine to West Ham with so little numbers at the back.

After a season of playing second-choice, it is understandable as to why Otamendi has caught the eye of some clubs in both the Premier League and across Europe, however, with only John Stones and Aymeric Laporte to choose from in central defence with Eliaquim Mangala set to leave City again this summer according to the Sun, Guardiola will be wise to retain the Argentinian.

With City looking to retain the Premier League for a third season in a row, strength in depth will be crucial for Guardiola, and Otamendi has proven that he is a more than capable defender in the English top-flight.

Manchester City fans, what would you do with Otamendi this summer? Let us know!

Atletico Madrid are ready to overtake Real Madrid as the capital’s top outfit

[ad_pod ]

Ever since the 2002/03 season, the Spanish capital has consistently had two big clubs in the top-flight. A couple of years before that, just at the turn of the century, Atletico Madrid spent some time in the Segunda division before clawing their way back to the top.

And after those two years of a slight crisis at the club, the ship was once again steadied but still not on the right course. The first years back in La Liga were tough. Atletico were struggling to break into the upper places in the table and, apart from Abel Resino’s efforts that brought them to fourth in 2008/09, their upper limit was the fifth spot at best.

That meant going behind Barcelona and behind their city rivals, Real Madrid. But all of that changed for the better with the arrival of Diego Simeone, who became the head coach in 2011/12 and has been at the helm ever since. In that span, their neighbours changed manager three times while the Catalan giant burned through a total of five.

Simeone was the one who finally brought order and stability to Atletico Madrid and he has been working hard to keep it that way for the last eight years or so. But the times are once again changing or at least they seem to be as we approach the beginning of the 2019/20 La Liga season.

For the first time in countless years, Atletico look different and are close to Real in the matchbook betting.

Sure, it’s the same old Simeone on the sidelines and the Rojiblanco colours are still on their shirts, but yet there’s a different aura surrounding them and, perhaps more importantly there’s a different aura surrounding their city rivals as well. A change might be on the horizon and maybe the abandoning of the iconic Vicente Calderon was the domino that started the chain reaction. However, instead of all the pieces crumbling they somehow fell right into place.

Looking at the squad now, you would barely recognise them at all. Most of the heavyweights of the dressing room are gone, with the likes of Diego Godin, Antoine Griezmann, Filipe Luis and Rodri moving on to pastures news, while new faces are starting to spring up and grace the pitch of the magnificent Wanda Metropolitano. This change in personnel, the stadium and the crisis at the other end of Madrid are all signs the time might be exactly right for the power to finally shift in the capital.

For years now, Atletico were considered to be in the top three of Spanish football but rarely would anyone put them at that number one spot. Even when they won the league in 2013/14 there wasn’t enough for people to talk about dominance or a genuine shift in power. A huge achievement? Sure, but not about an upcoming era of change. Even when they managed to finish ahead of their city rivals on numerous occasions, the last being in 2018/19, all we talked about was the Real Madrid crisis but not the Atletico Madrid resurgence.

Now it’s finally time to talk about that for a change. The pre-season, although it was just pre-season, was proof enough there’s something in the air and the Galacticos might not like it that much.

Everyone can get some slack in pre-season, sure, but losing 7-3 to the team you were supposed to be superior to cannot go unnoticed. And it didn’t.

Atletico Madrid might have lost some of their key players but Simeone is putting the younger crop to good use already. Not only has the team been rejuvenated but they’ve also made a profit while doing it and have lost almost nothing in firepower. Griezmann is gone and, even though he was Atletico’s top scorer every season in La Liga since he joined the club from Real Sociedad, in Joao Felix the club may already have a solution to take the baton from the departed World Cup winner.

After living in the shadows of Real Madrid, however, Atletico’s time is right now and who knows for how long their neighbours’ crisis will last. Surely we haven’t seen the last of Los Blancos but the upcoming season for them very much feels like a broken record, playing the same gloomy song over and over again: they have the same coach, a similar squad albeit with some key additions and the same tactics.

That would’ve been fine if those things brought them success last year or the year before that for that matter. But they didn’t and they’re forcing the same old tricks again, hoping for a different result. That’s the difference between the two.

Atletico are certainly not the ones to talk when it comes to old tricks. All these years they’ve been playing the same football and it brought them similar results year upon year. They’re among the top dogs in Spain but never the top dog. And now when their rivals are stuck in a loophole, Atletico have a chance to overtake them in the race.

Can they even rival Barcelona for the throne itself? That remains to be seen but jumping over Real Madrid as the more dominant team would definitely be a start.

The time is now and it seems the Colchoneros are ready to take it up a notch.

And about time, too.

Leeds needn’t be concerned about losing Tom Pearce to Barnsley this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds’ transfer window hasn’t been entirely orthodox and that’s putting things lightly.

Through the door has gone Pontus Jansson but defensively they’ve only added Brighton’s Ben White on loan.

Their strategy has been rather questionable with no permanent head arriving for the 2019/20 campaign.

Of course, Helder Costa’s move will turn into that next summer but there hasn’t been a great deal to shout about.

There could yet be another departure before the window closes though.

On the chalkboard

Earlier last week, The Yorkshire Evening Post claimed that Championship rivals Barnsley were interested in the 21-year-old Tom Pearce.

A left-back, Pearce has made seven first-team appearances for the Whites in the Championship, whilst winning caps at youth level for England too.

The youngster is incredibly promising, enjoying five years with the club and spending a period on loan with Scunthorpe in 2018/19 as well.

Yet, at the age he’s now at, ideally you’d be expecting him to challenge for a spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s ranks.

That doesn’t look entirely likely, though, especially if you consider the options already ahead of him in the pecking order.

On the left-hand side of defence, Barry Douglas, Ezgjan Alioski and Stuart Dallas are all options but it’s perhaps the young Leif Davis who makes Pearce leaving significantly less of a concern.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The fact is that opportunities to creep into Bielsa’s plans look incredibly slim, even if Pearce did play twice in the Championship last season.

That suggests Bielsa does see something in him but it would hardly be disastrous if Barnsley were able to capture him.

At just 19 years of age, Davis played four times in the league last year and despite being two years younger, looks as though he’s already ahead of Pearce.

With that in mind, it would certainly make sense if Leeds were to cash in on the latter.

The fee is unlikely to be too high given his reputation but a move away from Leeds would probably a good deal for all parties involved.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish shares hilarious throwback pictures

[ad_pod ]

Ah, MySpace. Facebook’s predecessor is now an ancient burial ground of photos and posts from teenagers who are now fully formed adults, embarrassed by their past behaviour.

In recent years we’ve seen that some footballers aren’t safe from the cringefest that is their old MySpace pages.

Adam Lallana and Dele Alli have both had their old social media pages discovered by fans, and they’re absolutely hilarious.

However, this most recent one tops the lot. In an attempt to embarrass his friend Callum Robinson, Grealish posted an old photo on his Instagram story, before posting some rather hilarious images of his own childhood.

While Robinson’s tracksuit is a bit dodgy, it’s Grealish’s snaps that steal the show.

The midfielder shared a picture from his first-ever house party at the age of 15, and like any good teenagers getting up to mischief he and his pals had a bottle of Malibu rum to share between them.

Grealish’s dress sense absolutely screams late 2000s as well. A pair of beige chinos are the highlight of his attire, but seeing the Villa captain without his iconic haircut is a truly sad sight.

Everton’s Djibril Sidibe shares first Instagram photos in his new kit

[ad_pod ]

And now it is finally official – Djibril Sidibe has joined Everton on loan from Monaco for the entirety of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

The Blues also have an option to buy the right-back once his initial stint at the club comes to an end.

Sidibe was Everton’s sixth signing of the summer at the time of writing, joining the newcomers who, so far, consist of Jonas Lossl, Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, and Moise Kean.

Rumours suggest that Marcos Rojo could arrive at Goodison by the end of the transfer deadline.

The 27-year-old defender has immediately taken to

/B04OtO9BTdv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram to share the first snaps in his new colours.

And naturally, it didn’t take long for the Frenchman to get swarmed by his friends and other stars, who wished him all the best in the future and sent their regards on his new journey.

Thomas Lemar sent his well wishes by saying “congratulations my darling”, while Germany U21 international Benny Henrichs and Monaco youngster Jordi Mboula also responded.

Sidibe will no doubt bring a lot of experience and quality to his new side.

The Frenchman has already won the World Cup with his nation in Russia last year and has contributed directly to 27 goals, scoring six and assisting 21 in 114 games in all competitions for Monaco.

Man Utd legend Gary Neville lays down the gauntlet to Paul Pogba

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

In a conversation with Off the Ball, Gary Neville has thrown down the gauntlet to Paul Pogba on what he needs to do to become a success at Manchester United.

What did he say?

The France World Cup winner has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks and months amidst speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old publicly admitted he would embrace a “new challenge” before sparking major controversy with his role in the penalty fiasco at Wolves this season.

Neville, who criticised Pogba in the aftermath of that clash at Molineux, has now revealed the Frenchman has to carry United on his shoulders as the side’s best player.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News): “When I criticised Paul Pogba after the penalty incident at Wolves, I don’t see it as being any different than the criticism of Roy Keane or David Beckham or Wayne Rooney. The best player, the leader, the captain in the team, will stand up and he will take the brunt of the criticism. Just as the manager will and the coach will.

“He’s the Bryan Robson of the 80’s now. United were in trouble, people hung everything on Bryan Robson, everybody now hangs a lot on Paul Pogba. But that’s the pressure that he wants, he wants to be the best player in the world. So now go and show us you’re the best player in the world.

“What does he need to do that? Carry Manchester United into the Champions League, win the Europa League, drive them forward. That’s what I want from Paul Pogba, that’s what I want from him because I believe he’s capable of doing it. I have faith in him to do it.”

Responsibility

Whilst Neville has previously criticised Pogba, his latest comments on the Frenchman certainly do have a lot of weight to them. The 26-year-old is seen as the main man at United, and as such will take the bulk of the flak when things don’t go the right way.

The pressure of being the Red Devils’ star player inevitably brings about increased attention. Mistakes are heavily scrutinised whilst below-par performances are simply not accepted. The Manchester side are in a period of transition at the moment and so things are understandably a little more tense. But if Pogba can embrace the responsibility and thrive in it, he could yet turn his United career around and cement a far more positive legacy.

Spurs loan swoop for Philippe Coutinho collapses after Barcelona star rejects move

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Philippe Coutinho has rejected a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur from Barcelona, Sky Sports reports.

What’s the word?

A separate Sky Sports report had claimed that Mauricio Pochettino actually phoned Coutinho to attempt to convince him to move to Spurs in this transfer window.

But the Brazil international has rejected the opportunity to move to north London, as he would prefer to leave the club on a permanent deal.

Barca are said to feel the same way but they value Coutinho at £80m, per Sky, making a move to the Premier League unlikely this week.

Coutinho had worked with Pochettino at Espanyol but there is not set to be a dramatic reunion prior to Thursday’s 5pm deadline.

Full steam ahead

Spurs can’t let this blow destroy their plans.

Sources have confirmed that the club are also interested in Juventus’ Paulo Dybala, Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes and Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso, while they would also like to sign Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham.

[ad_pod ]

There is a confidence that the latter deal will be agreed, sources claim, but their hunt for a playmaker simply has to move on.

There have been consistent negotiations for both Fernandes and Lo Celso, sources have said, and Coutinho’s rejection cannot prove to be too much of a setback.

The club simply need to pick themselves up and go again.
