Sheffield Wednesday’s Liam Palmer can contain Boro’s danger man

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk returns to an old hunting ground on Saturday as his side face Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

It will only be the 48-year-old’s third Championship game in charge of the club, and he will have to thank Atdhe Nuhiu for keeping it an unbeaten start as Owls boss in the league.

The long-serving striker netted an injury-time equaliser in his 241st appearance for the club at Hillsborough last Saturday to salvage a point against Fulham.

Wednesday versus Boro is typically not a rivalry, but there will be added weight behind the fixture with Monk an ex-manager there – he was actually sacked following a win against the Owls after just six months in charge.

Both teams are vastly different now, so where could the game be decided?

On the Chalkboard

Middlesbrough are struggling this season under the stewardship of former player Jonathan Woodgate as they sit 15th having won just two of their eight matches.

Their squad is quite talented on paper. For instance, Dael Fry has been linked to several Premier League clubs this week while Britt Assombalonga still remains at the club – he’s always a threat in this division having bagged 62 goals in 163 appearances.

But Marvin Johnson could prove to be the main threat to Wednesday’s backline having picked up both a goal and an assist this season in six starts.

The winger has shown he’s both a goal threat as well as a creative outlet under the former Real Madrid centre-back by averaging 1.4 key passes, shots and dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

If he does indeed lineup at right-wing, then Owls left-back Liam Palmer will be the man to stop him and he has every chance of doing so based on his performances so far this campaign.

The 28-year-old is averaging 1.8 clearances, 1.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, having also started six league matches.

He will have the edge over the 5 foot 10 man considering he is dispossessed 1.8 times per game and records an average of 1.4 unsuccessful touches too – Palmer rarely concedes any fouls (0.5 per game), so that’s even more in his favour.

If you bear those crucial statistics in mind, there is a reason to believe that the Wednesday man could have a key say in stopping Johnson.

Arsenal fans react to Nwankwo Kanu’s comments on Alex Iwobi

[ad_pod ]

Alex Iwobi has made a good start to life at Everton since making his transfer deadline day move to Goodison Park.

In his first three games for the Toffees, he has already scored two goals, which represents a third of his highest-season total of six achieved last year.

How do football vloggers afford to watch their team week in, week out? Find out in the video below…

Former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu has been talking about the switch, and he clearly feels that the Gunners made a mistake in letting the Nigeria international move on to pastures new.

He has said he “couldn’t believe” that the deal went ahead in an interview with Goal.com.

Unsurprisingly, the Gunners fans have been reacting to the comments, and they appear to be torn.

Some have agreed with the 43-year-old that they should have held on to the winger, while others seem happy with the transfer.

They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

La Masia revelation Carles Perez ticks all the boxes for Barcelona

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Mundo Deportivo, Carles Perez, who’s still officially a Barcelona B player, had multiple offers on the last day of the transfer window but the Catalans decided to turn them all down.

This might prove to be one of their best moves of the summer as Perez can become the perfect reinforcement for their team.

What’s the word, then?

Perez was not really such a hot topic over the course of the summer transfer window because many other names took the spotlight. There was not much time for outlets to break stories about a talented 21-year-old winger from Barcelona B when Blaugrana were busy buying Antoine Griezmann and chasing Neymar.

But Perez was always there, somewhere in the shadows, not getting noticed but still performing week in week out. Mundo Deportivo’s Ferran Martinez claims that the young forward got a lot of attention after his first games with the seniors in pre-season and also in the first couple of games in the new 2019/20 La Liga season.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

As his performances were very good, multiple teams enquired about his services, with many La Liga teams – as well as some outsiders – mentioned in the report. But the most important thing is that he stayed and, with that decision, Barcelona just might have hit the jackpot.

Perez checks all the boxes

In so many ways, Perez was Barcelona’s revelation this summer. Before that, he was still in Barcelona B, a team he is also still registered with, and despite him being their top scorer last season, there was not much talk about him in regards to a first team promotion. And that’s not a surprise since Barcelona had different priorities with the aforementioned superstars.

But Perez was the silver lining in a long and unlucky spell of injuries that the Catalans went through. Since almost the entirety of their frontline got sidelined, Perez had to be called up and once that happened, he took the stage by storm. So far, he’s tallied one goal and two assists in the three games he’s played in La Liga this season.

We shouldn’t forget that he’s also still just 21 and he comes for free, as opposed to Barcelona having to dip their toes into the market to find someone as reliable and as capable as he already is. In so many different ways, he ticks all the boxes: young, cheap, talented, already skilled and eager to continue impressing.

Not to mention that he’s only five games away from being officially promoted to the first team since there is a clause in his contract stating that if he plays seven games with the seniors, he will automatically be promoted. But, there’s a catch, he has to at least play 45 minutes in a game for that game to count towards those seven.

So far, he has two games and 14 minutes in the bank.

But either way, it’s just a matter of time.

Real Madrid: Many fans have slated Raphael Varane after loss against Paris Saint-Germain

Many Real Madrid supporters have been outraged by their club’s 3-0 loss against Paris Saint-Germain in the first Champions League game of the season.

There have been many criticisms to be had for the side, with Raphael Varane being among those to be targeted after the team came back from Paris pointless:

The Frenchman was given a rating of 5.6 by WhoScored, the lowest of any player who took part in the match, whether starting or coming off the bench.

The 26-year-old didn’t make a single tackle, interception or aerial duel during the match, while he made 3 clearances.

He did complete 93% of his attempted passes, but that won’t be much of a consolation for the fans who saw him as part of a defence that let three goals in.

Judging by the comments, the general consensus is that Varane needs to leave the club.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the performance, including tweets from outraged Real Madrid fans, can be seen below:

Transfers that shook the world: Manchester United buy Wayne Rooney from Everton

[ad_pod ]

It happens so rarely but when it does you know. You know for certain and you know instinctively.

It is a knowledge accrued from watching so many hours of football that if those hours were lumped together and placed in a pie chart of your life it would make up a sizeable portion rivalling sleep.

On October 19th 2002 a 16-year-old boy from Croxteth scored an absolute belter against Arsenal’s David Seaman at Goodison Park and a star was instantly born.

“Remember the name,” shrieked commentator Clive Tyldesley as the Toffees faithful went absolutely berserk and a lad still too young to drive or vote or drink ran away in celebration. It’s a great line but also a flawed one.

We didn’t need to remember Wayne Rooney for this was a generational talent, already fully formed bar the immaturity of a teenage mind. Generational talents dominate the headlines and a nation’s thoughts; they divide opinion and shoulder our hopes on the international stage and get talked about by relatives who would otherwise struggle to name five Premier League clubs.

Remember him? From the moment the ball left his boot and caressed off the crossbar to make him at the time the top flight’s youngest ever goal-scorer we knew he’d be as famous for the rest of our lives as Prime Ministers and A-list film stars. We knew instinctively and certainly.

If that might seem somewhat premature, even with the benefit of hindsight proving such a lofty claim correct as Rooney went on to win six league titles and a Champions League at club level while becoming England’s record goal-scorer but it should be noted that we – we being the populace who resided outside of Merseyside – were actually playing catch-up.

In Liverpool they were already well-versed in the very special talent emerging through the Everton ranks, for what it’s worth a born and bred Evertonian too.

Archie Knox, who was David Moyes’ assistant at Goodison at the turn of the century, had described Rooney’s displays as a 15-year-old playing in the under 19s set-up as ‘’Roy of the Rovers’ while the insular world of football also was aware of the one-man tsunami approaching.

Bob Pendleton, the scout who discovered the striker who would later be nicknamed ‘the White Pele’ by future manager Sir Alex Ferguson, relays the reactions of Glenn Hoddle and David Pleat on first witnessing Rooney’s innate brilliance at youth level and it is fair to assume that similar revelations took place on a regular basis. It’s fair to assume whispers of his promise spread like wildfire.

One such early devotee was Ferguson. When Rooney was 14 overtures were made following a recommendation by United’s youth coach Jim Ryan but nothing came of it: “The boy wanted to stay at Everton – at that time he had a love of the club and he’s an Everton fan,” the most successful manager in British football later recalled.

Rooney’s trajectory at Goodison was typically sharp and gob-smacking.

Just three short months after announcing his imminent greatness against Arsenal he won the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year award. Two months after that he made his international bow becoming the youngest player to wear three lions on his shirt when he took on Australia in a friendly.

He never once played at any level below: he was thrown in the deep end; introduced at the top because when you know, you know.

At this point there is a reluctance to put up his stats while adorning the royal blue of Everton because they are ordinary whereas his performances – given his tender age – were anything but.

For the record though he scored 15 goals in 67 games. As for his displays there was a rugged maturity coupled with an easy vision and a deftness of touch that amazed from one so inexperienced.

The fans must have been in dreamland with all this. Not only did they possess a storied superstar-in-the-making. He was a local boy too with the club in his bones. In primary school he had written a letter to jailed star Duncan Ferguson.

After scoring in an FA Youth Cup final he famously unveiled a t-shirt declaring ‘Once a blue, always a blue’.

That shirt would come back to haunt him and sooner than maybe he or anybody else thought.

Check out which team have “the best defence in the Premier League” in the video below…

In the summer of 2004 Manchester United made overtures once again only this time they weren’t given short shrift by the player but instead – mere weeks after lighting up the Euros with a series of phenomenal showings – Rooney put in a transfer request.

Ferguson remembers the deal being all-but-concluded after several weeks of back-and-to, not to mention a million speculative headlines when United hosted the Blues in late August, two days before the transfer window ended. “We thrashed out the deal. £27m. 18 years of age.”

If the deal being finalised wasn’t a huge shock considering how long it had dragged on for the move as a whole prompted rancour through the streets of Merseyside.

Paul Stretford, Rooney’s agent, was reported to have received death threats blamed as he was for turning his client’s head. With the deal imminent the teenager was smuggled out of Bellefield – Everton’s training ground – in the boot of his team-mate Alan Stubbs’ car. A nascent love affair was now severed.

On his departure graffiti appeared close to the ground stating: “Rooney could have been a God but he chose to be a Devil”.

On his arrival in Manchester, Ferguson said: “I am very excited. I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years.”

Fifteen years ago on September 1st a transfer took place that shook English football involving a local hero playing for a mid-table side moving to one that chased silverware as the norm.

For those that emitted surprise then or recall it as a surprise now three words harshly but pertinently spring to mind. Remember the game.

Huddersfield Town appointment lauded by Sam Allardyce

[ad_pod ]Sam Allardyce has spoken.Since their relegation from the Premier League, things haven’t improved much for Huddersfield Town. And when we say that, what we mean is their return to the second-tier has been utterly miserable.Sat in joint-last place in the Championship and already one manager down for the season, having sacked former boss Jan Siewert, who was admittedly a bizarre appointment in the first place, the Terriers needed a hero (or two).Watch Huddersfield Town Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Fortunately, that’s just what they’ve been given in the form of dynamic duo Danny Cowley and his brother, Nicky.

The former Lincoln Town men will inherit Siewert’s faltering squad and attempt to guide them towards their first victory of the season when they meet Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

The Owls have only recently appointed a new boss themselves, ex-Birmingham man Garry Monk, so this could be a tasty affair.

Speaking to talkSPORT, rescue mission specialist Allardyce reacted to the John Smith Stadium new boys…

Positive sounding stuff from Big Sam.

Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette waiting to see the market before signing new deal

[ad_pod ]

Alexandre Lacazette is reportedly waiting to see what sort of market there is for him before signing a new contract with Arsenal.

What’s the story?

Earlier on this year, the France international was said to be of interest to FC Barcelona. Whilst nothing came of that speculation, it could have played on the mind of the 27-year-old.

It is being reported that the former Lyon forward is waiting to see what the market for him is next summer before committing to a new contract with the north London outfit.

“They have the bigger mentality” – Spurs fans come to blows after the North London Derby in the video below…

Lack of playing time

It has been a good start to the season for Lacazette, and he has once again shown exactly what he is capable of. In his first three Premier League games, he has scored twice and notched up an average WhoScored rating of 7.14. His performance against Tottenham, in particular, galvanised his side as they recovered from a 2-0 deficit to earn a point.

There is a possibility he will be frustrated at the Emirates Stadium, and that is down to a lack of playing time. Last season, he started just 27 league games, and has already been dropped for once this term, against Liverpool of all teams.

Quite frankly, Lacazette is too good to be on the bench. Last season, he scored 19 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions, despite starting just 36 matches. If that fixture against the Reds is anything to go by, he may once again be used sparingly this time around.

As such, he may be looking to move on to another top side in a bid to start more regularly, and there are a number of clubs in the Champions League who would surely be willing to take him. After all, he is a top class player. If he wants to keep him in north London, Emery should think about giving him a bigger role.

Barcelona have to find some minutes for Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez against Valencia

Barcelona are still waiting for their big guns to be fully fit and ready for action. The latest reports coming from As state that both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are aiming to return for this weekend’s clash but that neither were present in the team’s latest training session. Taking into account the tough schedule and their overall recovery process, it will be key for the Catalans to manage their minutes properly come the weekend’s clash with Valencia at the Camp Nou.

Currently, the situation is, however, far from being rosy in the camp. The Catalan giant has a total of six players sidelined by various injuries and among them are still Messi, Suarez and Ousmane Dembele. Needless to say, without those three out of commission and even with the likes of Antoine Griezmann in the fold, Barcelona’s attacking powers are reduced significantly. The Argentine is yet to debut in the new 2019/20 La Liga season and the Uruguayan has only featured in the curtain-raiser against Athletic Bilbao, the game that Barcelona notoriously lost.

It’s not really a stretch to state that the club, and the fans, are eager to see them both play and despite Valencia actually being a pretty tough opponent to face, risking Messi and Suarez makes even less sense when we take into account the matches that follow. But at the same time, leaving them without any minutes could be equally harming so a balance of sorts will have to be struck and this is one of the key things Ernesto Valverde has to take into consideration for this weekend.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

And this makes even more sense when we factor in that the results have so far been rather mixed for Blaugrana in their new campaign. Currently, they sit in eighth spot in the table with only four points to their name after three games played. That equals to one victory, one draw and one defeat. Saying that having Messi and Suarez might have helped would be a warranted claim but saying they should take it easy with their return is also a viable one.

After welcoming Valencia to the Camp Nou this Saturday, Barcelona will travel to Germany and face Borussia Dortmund in the opening day of the Champions League. With that game in sight, getting some minutes for the aforementioned star duo would be crucial. If Blaugrana visit the Signal Iduna Park with Messi and Suarez in the lineup, which they will most likely be looking or rather, hoping to do, they have to make sure both are game ready and as sharp as possible.

With that being said, the clash against Valencia can, therefore, serve as the perfect transition for both them. It’s a tough match, for sure, but it’s at the Camp Nou and besides, they don’t have to play the full 90 minutes anyway. Slotting them into the starting 11 would be too big of a risk but ensuring they get some valuable game time is crucial nonetheless.

Valverde definitely can’t wait for the tandem to return to fitness so they can push the team forward just a little bit but playing the cards wrong this weekend might end up upsetting the whole system. If Messi and Suarez both end up with no minutes at the Camp Nou on Saturday, then they should not start in Germany. It’s as simple as that.

The game against Borussia Dortmund is looking likely to be an incredibly difficult one and at a tough away stadium. That’s one difficult turf to make your return on, even if your name is Messi or Suarez. Not to mention that players often aggravate their injuries even further if they are thrown back into the fray sooner than recommended.

That Valencia clash is, for those reasons, crucial in some many ways. It should serve as a transitional tool for Valverde to ease the duo back into action and get them some valuable minutes under their belts. That way, he’ll play it as slow as needed while also making sure Signal Iduna Park is not their first contact with the new season once they’re medically cleared to play.

Having Messi in the lineup and not being able to play him will, no doubt, be difficult but Valverde has to be careful not to get too eager. The risk is too great and balance has to be found, one way or the other.

Let’s hope, for the sake of the team as a whole, that he finds it successfully.
