Liverpool’s need to improve in midfield highlighted by FIFPro World XI shortlist

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

FIFPro have announced their 55-player shortlist for their Team of the Year and although it contains seven Liverpool players, none of them are midfielders.

Such an omission has been questioned by some fans and it could be argued that it is a surprise choice given the Reds’ consistency throughout the season, and their conquest of the Champions League.

However, all the other areas of Liverpool’s squad have been included. From the front three to the defence and goalkeeper the only position without recognition is midfield, which suggests it is an area that requires improvement.

That is particularly true if they are to pip title rivals Manchester City to the league this season, who have two midfielders on the shortlist in Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.

That pair produced more goals and assists last year than Liverpool’s regular trio of Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho despite the fact the Belgian made only 22 starts.

The creativity between the two sides is therefore considerable, and if the Reds replicate the last campaign and produce too many draws again, it will be because of the midfield.

However, that doesn’t mean the Reds’ midfield is without positives. None of their regulars had a pass success rate below 85%, and each managed at least 50 successful passes per game, on average.

If they can improve those stats in an attacking sense then the Anfield outfit should provide more of a threat, and could find it easier to unlock teams whose game plan is to defend.

The return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could help in that regard. He is able to run at defenders and can be more direct in his approach as a result, with his goals against Manchester City at Anfield in 2018 an example of that.

If Jurgen Klopp can get more out of his current midfielders or sign more quality then he could bring the entire squad up to the same high level, and then Liverpool may have enough to win the Premier League.

Liverpool youngster Bobby Duncan wanting to leave is something they’ll have to get used to

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mail, youngster Bobby Duncan wants to leave Liverpool with a possible loan move to Fiorentina on the cards.

What’s the word?

The British transfer window may now be closed but that isn’t stopping players from potentially leaving as clubs around the continent eye up people to bolster their ranks with the European market still open.

Considering Liverpool’s Champions League win, it would take a brave man to leave the club given their current exploits but Duncan is someone who doesn’t seem too bothered by that.

According to The Daily Mail, he is frustrated with his lack of first-team opportunities and wants to move away from the Reds as a result.

Per the report, Fiorentina could be willing to take the 18-year-old on loan.

Something Liverpool may have to get used to

It doesn’t matter how young and good you are, for the time being, it will take a colossal effort to break into this Liverpool side, especially if you’re a striker.

Rhian Brewster, a golden boot winner at the U17 World Cup is also struggling for opportunities but there haven’t been any hints that he’s frustrated.

Considering Brewster’s inability to work his way into the side, it’s not a great shock to see Duncan isn’t getting chances either.

The teenager has 23 goals in 26 matches for the club’s U18 side but individuals like him wanting to move on is something Liverpool may have to get used to.

The fact is that because of how well the senior team is doing, chances for their young players will become even more limited, thus adding to the frustration at youth level. In some ways, this will be negative if their best young players want to leave

If you’re a footballer you’re going to want to actually play and despite Duncan’s impatience in this situation, it wouldn’t be surprising if more players were found in this scenario.

Liverpool finished last season second in the Premier League whilst the fact they’ve reached two European finals in a row shows how good they’ve been.

At the moment, this won’t be an easy squad of players to get your chance in if you’re only on the peripheral.

Arsenal will face a poacher when they line up against Andre Silva in the Europa League

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal’s Europa League opponents Eintracht Frankfurt signed Andre Silva on loan before the end of the European transfer window on September 2nd. Here, we take a look at what the Gunners can expect when they face the Portugal international.

On the chalkboard

The Bundesliga outfit lost a lot of talent in attack during the summer, with Sebastien Haller, Luka Jovic and Ante Rebic all departing for new challenges.

As such, Adi Hutter and co needed to bring in reinforcements. Dejan Joveljic and Bas Dost were signed earlier in August, but clearly there was still the need for another forward. Accordingly, Silva joined from AC Milan, which is where Croatia international Rebic ended up.

“They have the bigger mentality” – Spurs fans come to blows after the North London Derby in the video below…

A poacher

The 23-year-old first burst onto the scene in 2016 with FC Porto, where he scored 16 goals in 32 appearances in the Portuguese league.

The following year, he earned himself a big-money move to Serie A, but things didn’t work out for him at the San Siro and he was subsequently shipped out for a short-term spell to Sevilla in 2018.

There, he partially rediscovered his form, scoring nine goals in La Liga in 27 games, and began to once again display the goalscoring qualities which helped him make his name.

He is not a forward who is afraid of shooting, averaging 2.3 a game in the league last term. That was more than any of his teammates. A fox in the box, he is yet to score outside of the area in his career, and relies on being in the right place at the right time.

He is also a player who likes to challenge in the air. He competed in 6 aerial duels per match last season, which was higher than everyone in the squad once again. Although he didn’t win as many as he lost, clearly the forward is not afraid to put himself about.

In Europe, Silva enjoys himself. He has 10 goals in 24 appearances, and it was especially in the Europa League that he excelled in his sole season with Milan to date.

All in all, then, Arsenal should expect to face a poacher who looks forward to appearing in continental competitions and if they allow him space in the penalty area, there is a strong chance the ball will end up in the back of the net.

West Ham striker Albian Ajeti must settle quickly after questionable decision

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Albian Ajeti has no room for error at West Ham United.

The club signed the forward alongside Sebastian Haller in the summer and the latter has enjoyed an exceptional start to life in east London.

The Frenchman scored in the 2-0 win over Norwich City at the weekend and was also on the scoresheet as the Irons beat Watford 3-1.

And yet it is Ajeti who is now under the microscope.

Indeed, the Hammers decided to cash in on forward Javier Hernandez on Monday, allowing the Mexico international to move to Sevilla.

It leaves the club with two senior strikers: Haller and Ajeti.

Sources at the club, when contacted on Monday, insisted that Andriy Yarmolenko can play in the striker role and Michail Antonio can too, though the latter is injured.

It means that Ajeti has to take to Premier League football like a duck to water.

Haller cannot be expected to play in every top-flight game for the remainder of the season as he will surely need a rest at some point, particularly over the busy Christmas period.

Ajeti is a goalscorer and he netted 21 times in all competitions last season for FC Basel.

He also scored twice for the Swiss club this season, once in Champions League qualification and once in the Super League.

Yet he drew a blank on his debut for the Irons against Newport County in the Carabao Cup and he has yet to show what he is capable of in the top-flight.

It may be that he proves his worth, that he makes his debut and swiftly manages to hit the back of the net, and then goes from strength to strength.

But if the opposite happens, if he cannot adapt, if he cannot get on the scoresheet quickly, then West Ham’s decision to move Hernandez on will look all the more bizarre.

And that, by extension, would only increase the pressure on Haller.

Ajeti has no room for error.

Leeds United: Fans question Marcelo Bielsa’s call to bench Helder Costa vs Barnsley

Many Leeds United supporters were left questioning Marcelo Bielsa’s call to name Helder Costa on the bench against Barnsley, as the two Yorkshire outfits met in the Championship on Sunday.

Leeds went into the encounter at Oakwell vying for a spot at the top of the Championship table after Swansea City failed to take a point at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, when Alfa Semedo struck the back of the net in the 85th minute to win the game for the visitors.

Marcelo Bielsa looked to do so without Costa at first, however, with the one-time Portugal international named on the bench for his seventh successive league game (WhoScored), before being introduced to proceedings at half-time.

Leeds were level with Barnsley at the break despite enjoying almost twice as much possession as the Tykes, with which the Whites fashioned one fewer effort on goal and only registered two shots on target, per WhoScored data.

United maintained their dominance in the latter 45, too, as Bielsa’s side laid claim to an even greater share of possession, attempted 16 shots on goal to Barnsley’s 11, and found the back of Bradley Collins’ net twice through late strikes by Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah and a penalty converted by Mateusz Klich.

Costa’s introduction in place of Jack Harrison at half-time failed to affect proceedings a great deal, though, as the Portuguese winger attempted the same number of shots as the Englishman on loan from Manchester City and attempted fewer key passes, although he did enjoy better success when it came to dribbles.

Harrison’s struggles will only help to feed the supporters calling for Bielsa to bench the 22-year-old, as many voiced their hope in seeing Costa named in the starting line-up and not the Manchester United product when Leeds announced the team to face Barnsley on Twitter.

Here are a few of the messages shared by Leeds fans longing to see Costa start a Championship game for their side…

Rangers fans discuss Andy King’s absence on Sunday

[ad_pod ]

Rangers games are coming thick and fast just now and squad rotation is the name of the game.

One summer recruit who is yet to play more than a bit part role though is Wales international and Premier League winner Andy King – a player hopeful he can win trophies at Ibrox, as reported in The Sun.

But omitted from the match day squad completely against St Johnstone on Sunday, some Rangers fans have been discussing his exclusion.

King arrived on loan from Leicester late in the transfer window and it was thought he would provide much needed experience and quality to the centre of midfield. With just four appearances and fifty one minutes of action so far though, King, as yet, hasn’t had the impact that would be excepted of a player with his pedigree.

After a tough Europa League fixture in midweek where he came off the bench, Sunday’s game could’ve been the ideal occasion to give him a run out, but when the team sheet was revealed there was no sign of King’s name.

Here’s a quick look at how Rangers fans reacted to his absence on Twitter…

Sheffield Wednesday’s Liam Palmer can contain Boro’s danger man

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk returns to an old hunting ground on Saturday as his side face Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

It will only be the 48-year-old’s third Championship game in charge of the club, and he will have to thank Atdhe Nuhiu for keeping it an unbeaten start as Owls boss in the league.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The long-serving striker netted an injury-time equaliser in his 241st appearance for the club at Hillsborough last Saturday to salvage a point against Fulham.

Wednesday versus Boro is typically not a rivalry, but there will be added weight behind the fixture with Monk an ex-manager there – he was actually sacked following a win against the Owls after just six months in charge.

Both teams are vastly different now, so where could the game be decided?

On the Chalkboard

Middlesbrough are struggling this season under the stewardship of former player Jonathan Woodgate as they sit 15th having won just two of their eight matches.

Their squad is quite talented on paper. For instance, Dael Fry has been linked to several Premier League clubs this week while Britt Assombalonga still remains at the club – he’s always a threat in this division having bagged 62 goals in 163 appearances.

But Marvin Johnson could prove to be the main threat to Wednesday’s backline having picked up both a goal and an assist this season in six starts.

The winger has shown he’s both a goal threat as well as a creative outlet under the former Real Madrid centre-back by averaging 1.4 key passes, shots and dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

If he does indeed lineup at right-wing, then Owls left-back Liam Palmer will be the man to stop him and he has every chance of doing so based on his performances so far this campaign.

The 28-year-old is averaging 1.8 clearances, 1.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, having also started six league matches.

He will have the edge over the 5 foot 10 man considering he is dispossessed 1.8 times per game and records an average of 1.4 unsuccessful touches too – Palmer rarely concedes any fouls (0.5 per game), so that’s even more in his favour.

If you bear those crucial statistics in mind, there is a reason to believe that the Wednesday man could have a key say in stopping Johnson.

Arsenal fans react to Nwankwo Kanu’s comments on Alex Iwobi

[ad_pod ]

Alex Iwobi has made a good start to life at Everton since making his transfer deadline day move to Goodison Park.

In his first three games for the Toffees, he has already scored two goals, which represents a third of his highest-season total of six achieved last year.

How do football vloggers afford to watch their team week in, week out? Find out in the video below…

Former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu has been talking about the switch, and he clearly feels that the Gunners made a mistake in letting the Nigeria international move on to pastures new.

He has said he “couldn’t believe” that the deal went ahead in an interview with Goal.com.

Unsurprisingly, the Gunners fans have been reacting to the comments, and they appear to be torn.

Some have agreed with the 43-year-old that they should have held on to the winger, while others seem happy with the transfer.

They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.
