Newcastle fans react as Sky journalist gives takeover verdict

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Newcastle fans have been reacting to a tweet from Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves, who had his say on the reported takeover statement from the Bin Zayed Group.

The Toon Army were left somewhat baffled on Monday as the Bin Zayed Group (BZG), supposedly released a statement through Dubai-based Geordie radio host Peter Redding.

The statement basically said nothing new or concrete, but just reaffirmed that the group are trying their best to complete a deal, leaving fans questioning the very validity of the proposed takeover.

Now, Graves, a Newcastle-based Sky Sports reporter, has tweeted his verdict on the situation.

Graves alludes to the conflicting sources on different continents, saying that those outside of Dubai are advising caution, while he also slams the toxic atmosphere around the press before calling this the “weirdest summer ever”.

The St. James’ Park faithful are running out of patience though, if they haven’t already, and some of them took issue with the tweet while others simply agreed that the club is in utter disarray.

Either way, you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Sheffield United: Keep Emmanuel Adebayor far away from the club

Sometimes in football, we see certain transfer rumours emerge which simply have to be read again to be believed.

This weekend has seen one of those very rumours come to fruition, with Premier League newboys reportedly (via the Sun) among a number of clubs looking into signing former Arsenal and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The big Togo striker is a free agent after seeing a spell in Turkey come to an end, and the 35-year-old is thought to have admirers in the English game, including that of Chris Wilder and Sheffield United if the rumours are to be believed.

However, here in the Tavern, we aren’t sure what to make of this, other than that it just not seem the kind of signing Sheffield United would look to make.

For one, there are the wages which Adebayor would no doubt command, which would probably see him earn an amount similar to what three or four Blades players earn put together. Secondly, we have the striker’s well known and long-standing attitude issues, something which the Blades manager Chris Wilder would surely just not stand for within his squad.

Finally, there is the more obvious problem of just how Adebayor would fit into a United squad which has built itself on squad spirit and bond.

Adebayor has in the past been known to the play the so called ‘big man’ at clubs he has been at, with trouble often not too far away from wherever he decides to be.

Sheffield United need players who they can trust to do the job asked of them and who will fit into the ethos that Wilder demands. Sadly, despite his obvious ability, Adebayor simply does not fit into that mould.

Everton fans react to the latest on Luke Garbutt’s future

[ad_pod ]

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson has revealed that his club are in talks with Everton over a move for Luke Garbutt, who spent last season on loan with the U’s.

Garbutt has been with Everton since 2011 and has actually made 12 first-team appearances for the Toffees – five of which have been in the Premier League.

The defender is not exactly a spring chicken at the age of 26, though, and it is somewhat of a surprise that he still belongs to the Merseyside outfit.

The left-back, who has a contract at Goodison Park until next summer, made 25 League One appearances for Oxford during the 2018-19 campaign.

Robinson has revealed that he is keen to re-sign Garbutt this summer.

Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes would fill any void left by Paul Pogba

The wheels are already in motion for Bruno Fernandes’ move to Manchester United, according to Portuguese media outlet Record.

Obviously, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope he can improve on what turned out to be a bitterly disappointing campaign, which saw the side win just three times in final 12 games of the season. Frankly, he needs to, considering Jamie Redknapp claimed on Sky (via the Metro) at the start of May that he should fear the sack…

However, his task hasn’t been made any easier by recent revelations. Paul Pogba, who produced 16 goals and 11 assists last season, publicly announced his intention to seek a new challenge away from Old Trafford. And no matter what you think about the Frenchman, that would leave a rather large void for United to fill.

One name who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer is Bruno Fernandes. And it’s easy to see why: the Sporting Lisbon star, who is also a rumoured target for Tottenham, netted 32 goals in all competitions last season.

The people over at Total Football Analysis recently produced a report which suggests that Fernandes would be the perfect fit for Solskjaer’s United, for a number of reasons. For starters, they argue that his ability to play ‘in between the lines’ suits the style and shape commanded by the Norwegian who typically plays with two players in that role (either Lingard or Pogba). His versatility is also touched upon, with suggestions that he can operate on the wing as competently as he can in an attacking midfield role.

On average the Portugal international produced 3.6 shots and 3.2 key passes per game, while Pogba – United’s current most threatening attacker – managed 3 and 1.6, respectively (as per WhoScored). Total Football Analysis went on to discuss Fernandes’ quote “fantastic passing ability,” “excellently times runs,” and “effectiveness between the lines”.

These are all things United fans enjoyed with Pogba, yes, but if he does leave, this seems like a ready-made replacement.

Manchester United fans, do you think Fernandes will be able to replace Pogba? Let us know in the comments below…

Spurs fans in love with new kits

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are in love with the club’s new kits.

Spurs released their strips for the 2019/20 season on Thursday via a series of tweets.

Made by Nike, the home strip obviously retains the iconic white, while also looking to honour the club’s motto of “To dare is to do”.

The away kit is a blue number with a pattern in the top half and a white AIA sponsorship and Spurs badge; the home kit has a red AIA logo.

The club have yet to announce the release of their third kit after last season’s green effort became iconic, as it was worn in the club’s phenomenal comeback victory over Ajax in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.

Despite that, fans are thrilled with the kits already released as the 2019/20 season looms.

Spurs will first wear their kits in pre-season, with games against Juventus and Manchester United looming.

Everton Transfer Roundup: Zouma talks, Ocampos update, Toffees could pay £35.6m for right-back

[ad_pod ]

Everton have already agreed a fee with Barcelona to bring Andre Gomes to Goodison Park on a full-term basis and will likely want to add other faces to their squad before the start of the next season.

Today’s Toffees transfer roundup brings you a report on the beginning of talks for a former loanee, an update in the pursuit of a Ligue 1 star and interest in a La Liga defender.

Chelsea and Everton in talks over Zouma

According to the Independent, Everton have opened talks with Chelsea over the potential purchase of French centre-back Kurt Zouma. The former Saint Etienne man spent last season on loan with the Merseyside outfit and may now return on a permanent basis.

Ocampos agent talks about potential price tag

Bruno Satin, the agent of Marseille player Lucas Ocampos, has said the Argentinian could be available for a fee in between €10m (£8.9m) and €15m (£13.3m) this summer. Everton were linked with the winger back in April by Calciomercato.

Arias of interest to Toffees

El Gol is reporting that Everton are prepared to pay €40m (£35.6m) for Atletico Madrid right-back Santiago Arias. The Colombian signed last summer for the Spanish side for €11m (£9.8m), so they could make a tidy profit on their original investment.

Newcastle fans react to Wolves joining the Joelinton race

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle fans still can’t seem to catch a break in this summer transfer window.

One of their long-term targets, Hoffenheim’s Joelinton, might slowly be slipping away as we speak, if the latest report coming from Kicker is to be believed.

The German outlet state that Wolverhampton Wanderers, Newcastle’s Premier League rivals, have joined the race for the 22-year-old centre-forward and are willing to pay a significant fee to land him.

The Chronicle say the Magpies have a long-standing interest in the player and have sent scouts to watch him play, but unsurprisingly fans are not feeling confident about potentially signing him.

And even if they could match Wolves’ financial power, which the fans don’t really see happening, would the player still choose them over a more stable and ambitious club?

All of those concerns led many of them to believe that this transfer is simply not happening and that the player is bound to become a Wolverhampton player soon enough.

Austin’s proven record in the Championship could be beneficial for West Brom

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Sun, Charlie Austin is a target for West Brom as Slaven Bilic looks to ramp up his preparations for the new campaign.

What’s the word?

West Brom’s problem wasn’t particularly with goals last season as Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez scored a combined 46 between them.

The Baggies were one of the highest scorers in the Championship, netting 87 times during the course of the campaign.

However, they do look as though they’re in the hunt for a new striker this summer.

That’s according to The Sun who suggest that Austin is a target for the club. The report claims that West Brom are willing to meet Southampton’s £8m valuation of the player.

They might not face a straightforward chase to sign him as Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Fulham are also interested.

Austin could be game-changing

The 29-year-old endured a pretty dismal 2018/19, finding the net just two times for the Saints in the Premier League.

He found it a struggle to get into the side, starting just 11 times. However, that arguably isn’t a fair reflection of the player he is.

The 6 ft 2 star’s record season in front of goal in the top-flight is 18 strikes but it’s seemingly in the Championship where he feels at home.

During the 2015/16 season, he scored 10 goals in 16 games whilst he netted 19 in 34 for QPR two years prior to that.

West Brom are likely going to need to replace Gayle next season and Austin could be the man to do it.

The former is a player who seemed to flourish in the second tier, finding the net 24 times last term but West Brom’s target comes close to matching him in terms of his Championship record.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

At £8m, it would be an expensive buy for a side in the Championship but it could prove the difference between whether they achieve promotion or not.

Austin has been part of a play-off winning side before, going up in 2014, so his experience of that situation, as well as his ability to score goals means Bilic could strike gold.

This would be a smart start to the window for the Baggies if they could get a deal over the line.
