Transfer Focus: Spurs to enquire about Aarons if Trippier leaves

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur will make an enquiry for Norwich City right-back Max Aarons if Kieran Trippier leaves the club, per Football.London.

What’s the word?

Trippier endured a terrible season in the top-flight after a quite brilliant World Cup with England in Russia.

A number of embarrassing mistakes, namely an own goal against Chelsea, have seen his stock fall considerably and he has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A.

Both Juventus and Napoli are said to be keen, with Spurs reportedly identifying Aarons as a potential replacement.

The 19-year-old helped the Canaries to promotion from the Championship, making 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and registering six assists.

An upgrade for the future

This would be a brilliant bit of business from Spurs.

Trippier has endured an execrable season and it is only Serge Aurier’s own deficiencies that have kept him in the team.

One could argue that the right-back situation has gone well beyond crisis mode, and it’s no surprise Liverpool’s opening minute penalty in Madrid came from a ball in behind Trippier.

Moving him on and reinvesting in a teenager with a remarkably high ceiling is classic Spurs and would surely endear chairman Daniel Levy to Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine has been spectacular when it comes to bringing the best out of full-backs, from the likes of Luke Shaw to Danny Rose, and Aarons could be the latest beneficiary.

A solid defender with a willingness to bomb forward and create chances for his team-mates, he could solve the club’s right-back issue for the next decade.

If that means sacrificing Trippier, Spurs simply have to do it.

Why Harry Maguire should opt for Man United over Man City

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City’s dominance under Pep Guardiola has been staggering. Having won the Premier League for two consecutive terms, amassing 100 points in the 2017/18 season and 98 points in the last campaign, the Citizens are beginning to monopolise a division widely acclaimed for its competitiveness.

When you factor in two successive EFL Cup triumphs and their whopping 6-0 thrashing of Watford in the FA Cup final – completing their domestic treble last season – there is little evidence to suggest that their progress will halt.

Undoubtedly, Pep Guardiola – who has won 87 of his 114 Premier League matches – has propelled Manchester City into a relentlessly successful outfit, creating a chasm in quality between the club and their traditionally superior neighbours. Manchester United have been trophyless for the last two seasons, while Guardiola continues to contribute to his remarkable collection of honours as a manager.

Furthermore, given Manchester United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and having failed to win the Premier League for the previous six years, it’s hardly the most attractive proposition for the game’s best players. Conceivably, the promise of success and the allure of Guardiola makes City an instantly more desirable option.

Reports linking Leicester City’s Harry Maguire with both Manchester clubs have raged on throughout the summer, but it appears the giant dressed in red have thrown their first punch.

According to Sky Sports, United have tabled a £70m bid for the coveted defensive colossus, moving ahead of City and seemingly into pole position to clinch his signature. Sceptics will naturally cite United’s tangible fall in grace to formulate an argument which advises Maguire against a move to Old Trafford, but there is a compelling case to suggest it’s an ideal destination under the current circumstances.

City are ascending into unprecedented heights from the club’s historical perspective, while United are in steep decline – a familiar narrative since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013. United’s best Premier League finish during the post-Ferguson era has been second in the 2017-18 season, and even then they were 19 points adrift from Manchester City.

For these reasons, one would expect Maguire to favour City, and while The Sun report that the 26-year-old has his heart set on a move to the Etihad, a move to Old Trafford would arguably represent a better option for the Englishman.

With new-found success and a manager of Guardiola’s esteemed pedigree comes an obsession with improving every aspect of the team. The Spaniard has signed 14 first team players during his time in Manchester, seven of whom cost more than £45m to acquire – ample evidence of his eagerness to improve and mould the side in his own image.

But such is the quality of their depth that City now parade through that obsession, excellent players are liable to becoming discontent with limited involvement – as Riyad Mahrez can attest to.

Despite being City’s most expensive signing under Guardiola’s leadership, the Algerian has been left frustrated with a lack of consistent opportunities. City’s manager even confessed in a press conference in February that he was unhappy with his inability to give Mahrez more chances to impress – as reported by Goal.

“I am sad because he is training incredibly, he is an incredibly talented player but in this moment we have five strikers, for example the last games Leroy [Sane] hasn’t played either.

“We have incredible players, like for example Bernardo [Silva] and Raz [Sterling] are in top, top form and that is the only reason why, there’s no particular reason, like being upset or something like that.”

“He is a guy we are happy with, but unfortunately I am not kind with him, in the fact I cannot give him the minutes he deserves, so I’m sorry, that’s all I can say.”

If Maguire were to join City, he would be expected to match immense standards and deal with a squeeze in pressure that, with the obvious exception of the 2018 World Cup, he has probably never encountered in his career.

Manchester United’s need for defensive recruitment is far more pronounced than City, especially as they conceded 54 goals in 38 league games last season – the 11th best defence in the division.

United’s transfer strategy seems to revolve around a coherent attempt to breathe new, homegrown life into a club bereft of optimism, and one can envisage a player of Maguire’s standing playing a significant role in the Red Devils’ rejuvenation.

In keeping with the modern-day centre-half Maguire is comfortable in possession, but he blends that progressive style with old-fashioned robustness and aerial command.

Brendan Rodgers remarked on the defender’s varied skill set, as reported by the Mirror…

“Harry is a top-level centre-half, let’s make that clear, there’s no doubt about that. But there are still areas of his game he can improve upon – absolutely there are. He has age on his side. He can get better. No question.”

“What he already has is incredible pace. And, first and foremost, he’s a defender who enjoys heading the ball. How many times have you heard about defenders who can’t head the ball? Harry’s not one of those.”

“He can defend the box. What happens when you play for big teams is that you have to be comfortable on the ball. And he has that.”

When considering that Manchester City already have Aymeric Laporte and John Stones within their ranks – centre-halves renowned for their ball-playing attributes – there is a danger that City would become overloaded with defenders who exhibit similar skill sets if Maguire were to sign. Even Nicolas Otamendi, to a lesser extent, is regarded for being comfortable in possession – a prerequisite for any defender with Pep Guardiola at the helm.

At United, there’s a dearth of ball-playing centre-halves, particularly ones of corresponding quality to Manchester City’s defenders. If Maguire were to join the Red Devils ahead of City, one could envisage the 26-year-old becoming Manchester United’s most prominent and indispensable defender, and that’s a prospect which is difficult to turn down even in the midst of United’s decline.

As Brendan Rodgers identified, there is scope for Maguire to develop further and the former Hull City man has ample time to refine his game.

In light of United’s transition, with lessened expectations and greater freedom to impress, Old Trafford would be an ideal setting for the 26-year-old to continue his progression.

Celtic fans discuss what Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo’s arrival means for Kieran Tierney

[ad_pod ]

Celtic are on the verge of making their third signing of the summer transfer window so far, with Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo arriving in Glasgow to agree terms with the club.

The Evening Times report that the deal has been agreed between all parties and that the player will be unveiled by the club on Friday.

Pictures on social media taken by photo agency SNS had earlier shown the player arriving at Glasgow airport.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

Primarily playing as a left-back, the 24-year-old’s imminent signing has again opened the debate about what the future holds for that position at Celtic.

The Daily Record report that Napoli and Arsenal both remain interested in signing Kieran Tierney and while neither have met the club’s valuation quite yet, the paper say the Scotland international could have a big decision to make over the coming weeks.

Some fans are now concerned that by making a strong addition to the position Celtic could hasten his exit, while others feel that the arrival of Bolingoli-Mbombo is simply a case of adding much-needed competition.

Will Tierney now stay or go? Will a new signing in the position impact a potential Tierney deal either way?

Rangers fans happy to see the back of four players Gerrard has had enough of

[ad_pod ]

Rangers are set to get rid of four first-team players this summer, according to The Scottish Sun.

The paper say that Steven Gerrard has told Graham Dorrans, Kyle Lafferty, Eros Grezda and Jason Holt they have no futures at the club.

Their situation is so dire that it’s said they have been left behind in Glasgow as the club embark on a pre-season training camp in Portugal, with all four told to find new clubs.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

None of the players have produced much for the team over the last 12 months with Holt spending time on loan at Fleetwood Town, Dorrans missing most of the season through injury and duo Lafferty and Grezda failing to make the attacking contribution expected of them when they signed last summer with just six top flight goals between them.

Rangers have already made a number of signings this summer as Gerrard actively tries to find a different blend in his starting eleven that can consistently challenge Celtic next season.

Gers fans agree with getting rid of the squad deadwood and have taken to Twitter over the last 48 hours to share their thoughts…

Manchester City: A green light from Rodri could lead to more domination

Manchester City reportedly hope to reach an agreement with Atletico Madrid over midfield maestro Rodri who is considering a record £62million move to the Etihad.

According to the Daily Mail, champions City have received a boost in their pursuit of Spaniard Rodri who has apparently asked for time to assess a prospective £62million transfer.

So, why should the club hope he accepts?

Obviously, City are currently relying on veteran anchor Fernandinho, 34, to fill the defensive midfield role. And while he’s still a good player, he missed a total of 15 matches during the 2018-19 season due to injury which could suggest that age-related complications and possible fatigue have started to creep into his game.

Considering how many games the club will aim to play across all competitions next season, having just the one player in the squad to perform that role does present a worry. Indeed, the Guardian wrote back in December of the problems the Sky Blues face without him in the team, with their win percentage dropping from 74.1% with him to 64.3% (these stats collated during City’s most difficult stage of the campaign in December, during which they lost to Leicester and Crystal Palace.)

Obviously, they did still win the league but only by a point so, while they’ve proven they can win without the Brazilian, having a high-level back-up would certainly help extend their domination.

We all know that one of the fundamental demands Guardiola has of his players is that they can pass the ball and contribute to the numerous layers of fluid play and build-up. As it stands, the Spaniard, who made 32 La Liga appearances this season, has a considerably higher pass percentage rate than Fernandinho, at 91.1% over 87.5%, respectively (as per WhoScored).

Though City’s current midfielder boasts more passes (70.7) and key passes (0.8) compared to Rodri (56.7 and 0.5) this may be more of a reflection of differing philosophies between the possession-based progressive Pep Guardiola and pragmatic defensive style of Diego Simeone.

Defensively speaking, there isn’t much to separate the two. Rodri makes an impressive average of 3 tackles per game while Fernandinho manages just 2. And with counter-attacking football being such a huge part of Guardiola’s approach, he might also have been left impressed by the marginal difference in the number of interceptions made, with his current option donning 1.4 interceptions while Rodrigo sits on 1.2.

The move makes sense for both parties. The club get their Fernandinho successor, and a very competent one at that, and will continue to dominate with their foolproof system which has seen them collect two Premier League titles in a row, and Rodri will surely develop as a player under the guidance of one of the best coaches in the world.

If he does accept a deal to move to Manchester, it’ll be great news for the club’s hopes of dominating even further.

Manchester City fans, do you agree Rodri would be a good Fernandinho replacement? Let us know in the comments below…

Get him ASAP: Man United fans urge club to sign Ndidi from Leicester

[ad_pod ]

A number of Manchester United fans have called for their club to secure the signature of Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Ndidi – speaking on international duty with Nigeria – has told Goal.com that he is ‘flattered’ to be linked with a move to Old Trafford, amongst other big clubs, having been mooted as a United target in the past.

The midfielder joined Leicester from Genk in January 2017 and has made 101 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions.

During the 2018-19 campaign, the 22-year-old contributed two goals in 38 Premier League appearances for the former English champions.

United are likely to move for at least one new central midfielder this summer following the departure of Ander Herrera.

And a number of the club’s fans have called for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to seal Ndidi’s signature in this summer’s transfer window.

Indeed, the midfielder could now become a priority for United with Paul Pogba admitting that he is targeting a move away from Old Trafford ahead of the new campaign.

Newcastle fans react as Sky journalist gives takeover verdict

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Newcastle fans have been reacting to a tweet from Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves, who had his say on the reported takeover statement from the Bin Zayed Group.

The Toon Army were left somewhat baffled on Monday as the Bin Zayed Group (BZG), supposedly released a statement through Dubai-based Geordie radio host Peter Redding.

The statement basically said nothing new or concrete, but just reaffirmed that the group are trying their best to complete a deal, leaving fans questioning the very validity of the proposed takeover.

Now, Graves, a Newcastle-based Sky Sports reporter, has tweeted his verdict on the situation.

Graves alludes to the conflicting sources on different continents, saying that those outside of Dubai are advising caution, while he also slams the toxic atmosphere around the press before calling this the “weirdest summer ever”.

The St. James’ Park faithful are running out of patience though, if they haven’t already, and some of them took issue with the tweet while others simply agreed that the club is in utter disarray.

Sheffield United: Keep Emmanuel Adebayor far away from the club

Sometimes in football, we see certain transfer rumours emerge which simply have to be read again to be believed.

This weekend has seen one of those very rumours come to fruition, with Premier League newboys reportedly (via the Sun) among a number of clubs looking into signing former Arsenal and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The big Togo striker is a free agent after seeing a spell in Turkey come to an end, and the 35-year-old is thought to have admirers in the English game, including that of Chris Wilder and Sheffield United if the rumours are to be believed.

However, here in the Tavern, we aren’t sure what to make of this, other than that it just not seem the kind of signing Sheffield United would look to make.

For one, there are the wages which Adebayor would no doubt command, which would probably see him earn an amount similar to what three or four Blades players earn put together. Secondly, we have the striker’s well known and long-standing attitude issues, something which the Blades manager Chris Wilder would surely just not stand for within his squad.

Finally, there is the more obvious problem of just how Adebayor would fit into a United squad which has built itself on squad spirit and bond.

Adebayor has in the past been known to the play the so called ‘big man’ at clubs he has been at, with trouble often not too far away from wherever he decides to be.

Sheffield United need players who they can trust to do the job asked of them and who will fit into the ethos that Wilder demands. Sadly, despite his obvious ability, Adebayor simply does not fit into that mould.

Everton fans react to the latest on Luke Garbutt’s future

[ad_pod ]

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson has revealed that his club are in talks with Everton over a move for Luke Garbutt, who spent last season on loan with the U’s.

Garbutt has been with Everton since 2011 and has actually made 12 first-team appearances for the Toffees – five of which have been in the Premier League.

The defender is not exactly a spring chicken at the age of 26, though, and it is somewhat of a surprise that he still belongs to the Merseyside outfit.

The left-back, who has a contract at Goodison Park until next summer, made 25 League One appearances for Oxford during the 2018-19 campaign.

Robinson has revealed that he is keen to re-sign Garbutt this summer.
